I love L'Opossum and COVID-19 canceled my dinner out. But just last week they re-opened and I was able to get takeout from them and I was not disappointed. We ordered online a few days ahead and then drove up at the time our order was ready. They just came outside and brought it to us masked and gloved. We got a cocktail and a bottle of wine. Both were really good and the cocktail came in a Grey Goose branded mason ball jar. That was a nice touch!! My crab cakes were delicious, huge and had zero filler. And the sauce was delicious. It was on a huge bed of sautéed spinach and they did not skimp!! Husband got their pulled pork platter and loved it. He said their cornbread was some of the best he has had. My wife and I went to L'Possum on 5/23 after waiting 3 weeks for a reservation. It was a good/bad experience. I ordered the crab cakes, expecting a wonderful experience. As it turned out, these may be the worst crab cakes I have ever had for the price. A good crab cake should be lightly brown, soft, and flakey with just enough seasoning to enhance the crab. These were so overcooked that they were encrusted and very dense and dry. They appeared to have good quality crab, but the preparation was very disappointing. On the other hand, my wife's lobster Mac and cheese was outstanding. There was lots of lobster and the cream sauce was light and not overpowering. We also had the nightly special appetizer, which was outstanding. The service was also very good. read more

Hands down... best dining experience I've ever had in Richmond... sitting at the bar no less (which anyone who knows me knows I hate having dinner at a bar). The cosy atmosphere makes you feel like you're in someone's eclecticly decorated home for a dinner party rather that a fine dining restaurant. Though the vibe is unpretentious, don't let it fool you... this chef is a beast if you enjoy adventurous, "cheffy" cuisine. The American mash-up of French-inspired dishes pulled off here is truly amazing. There are so many items on the menu one should try, I highly recommend bringing 4-6 people and ordering 1-2 of everything on the menu so your whole table can try it all. And the service... forget it. First off, to hear staff anywhere gushing and raving about where they work and who they work for is a rare joy, but found frequently here. This enthusiasm definitely shows in the pride they take with the service they give to their guests. From the recommendations on the menu, always asking if they might remove a drink or dish... even the thoroughness taken as they carefully inspect each dish, glass and utensil before presenting it to a guest, it's the kind of service you might expect perhaps in the stuffiest of white table cloth restaurants with servers who've been working there for 40 years... not from early to mid 20-something newbies to serving in a fine dining restaurant. Finally... the value... though all of the main entree's are in the $30-$40 range, the price range of the menu is otherwise extremely approachable... especially if coming here for more of a tasting experience; there is no reason a group of 4-6 people can't have a large sampling of many items, get full, have a couple cocktails and be out of here for no more than $100 per person; which in my book, to have perhaps one of the best dining experiences I've ever had (and I've had many), that's a pretty small price to pay. There is no doubt the same meal for 1 I had tonight would have been $200+ at many places in larger cities... and well received I might add. read more

I am embarrassed to say that it has taken so much time to finally eat at L'Opossum. I found it to have a quirky and edgy atmosphere. I liked the vibe and the food was definitely worthy of 5 stars. I am not usually fond of cocktails but the waitress recommended a Throwing Shade. A Woodford Reserve with a hint of orange and sweet vermouth. Did not disappoint. Escargot appetizer followed with a wonderful quail entree. My wife had the potatoes with leek soup and then crab cakes. Wines by the glass were very good. We ended with desserts and after dinner drinks. I can't wait to go again. I travel to the Inn at Little Washington and the Three Black smiths but this is in my own backyard. read more

My most recent visit to L'Opossum was a great disappointment compared with two previous visits. The scallops and dessert were both overcooked, and the cocktails did not wow the way I've come to expect from this restaurant. What a memorable experience. I have been lucky to have eaten in many lovely restaurants around the world. Who knew a favorite one would be in a quirky neighborhood in my new hometown? This is not just a phenomenal meal but also an immersive experience. Everything is thought out in such detail; from the eclectic 70/80's vibe and original and quirky art to the creative and "suggestive"menu descriptions. The food...OH...the food...I have never seen such pretty presentations in a real meal way (not just small bites with sauce dots on a plate).You have to focus on each bite and let the flavors show the story. Amazing and on point! We had a group date and reservations were made in a month in advance. Definitely worth it! I don't remember what I order but I def have the photos for it. Haha, the cocktails were amazing and on point! My husband and I got the violet femme and the hibiscus kiss but it was so smooth and delicious. My husband got the beer and I finished my meal with the French tickler. It was soooo good! The meal we got were the specials. It's been over a month so I don't remember the names. (Sorry!). It was so beautiful displayed and the portions were just right. I left feeling very satisfied and not too food. My husband and I even got the dessert La Petite Mort Au Chocolat en flamb. ON POINT! Make your reservations early, folks..this place is booked at least a month out! And it's not hard to see why; intimate and romantic inside, its a clear date night winner. But it's also fun and hip; great music, cool wait staff, and whimsical decor and accessories is what sets this apart from other upscale restaurants. I mean, my friend's cocktail came adorned in a leather jockstrap. It's impossible not to have a good time here. Excellent food in a non-stuffy atmosphere..I keep telling you guys that's the ticket. I went back and forth on whether to do cocktails or wine, ultimately deciding to stick with wine because I knew I would be ordering steak. But I have to say, their cocktail list is not for the faint of heart. If it had a larger bar area, I would be making this my after-dinner cocktail spot for sure. Stiff, classic cocktails is their specialty. We ordered the french onion dip to start. It was fine, the bread served with I could have done without. Really called for more of a crisp crostini. We also ordered the Carpaccio venison, beautiful presentation, nicely prepared. Finally, for entrees...my beef swellington! You absolutely must add the shaved truffles, no exceptions. Phenomenal and tender cut, sauced complemented very well. I made the right choice. My friend ordered the pork cheek stuffed with roasted quail and loved it. Wine list limited but nice selections, some local picks mixed in as well. For dessert I had to try the chocolate flambe and it was heavenly. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here and I gotta say, as great as the food was here, it wasn't the real star of the show. This place has a presence. It's all vibes and presentation here. They make you order your drinks, appetizers and main course all at once and said they will space it out. We could not do it any other way. We have been to L'Opossum three times.  I would like to give 4.5 stars for the first two visits.     The third visit was telling about the character of the restaurant.  We made a late reservation (9:00 p) - there were no earlier reservations available. The entrees - Filet Mignon of Beef "Swellington" and Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes were terribly overcooked.  The beef tenderloin was ordered rare but it was all of medium and the crab cakes were so overcooked that the edges of the crab cakes were hard and completely dehydrated.  Parts of the crab cake were edible the rest was inedible. As a retired chef, I try to picture the circumstances that had to exist in the kitchen to produce such a result?  The obvious answer is too much heat - but what happened that the food "got too much heat"?  Maybe due to the late hour, the kitchen staff was mentally letting down with the rush behind them?  Possibly the chef had left the kitchen for any number of reasons and left the last order to a line chef?  Maybe the line chef is multi-tasking between cooking and the activities required to clean and close the kitchen (and get the hell out of there)?   Sometimes cooking the last dinner or two at the end of the evening is left to a line cook who may get hired from the neighborhood and has limited training or only "in house" training.   It is not completely out of the ordinary that a dishwasher who shows talent and motivation is being trained to do some things on the line.  There are some very good cooks that start out as dishwashers.  It is conceivable that the beef tenderloin and crab cake were handed off to a less experienced cook because it is hard to screw up a rare beef tenderloin and a couple of crab cakes. Given the circumstances L'Opossum leaves themselves open to this kind of speculation. How does food prepared in this manner get by EVERYONE (including the wait staff) and make it to the table?   I spent $398 for cocktails, appetizers, bottle wine, entrees, dessert.  My purpose for being there was to enjoy sharing time together with the person I dined with.  I have found that sending food back is ruinous to an evening. Especially when it is the main course.  The food was not more important than the person I was with.  We were doing a quick weekend getaway to Richmond.  If L'Opossum understood this they would care enough to make sure their product is always right and they would understand WHY it should be right.  This is a character issue and a discipline issue from the top down.  I say it is a character issue because it is one thing to overcook something but another thing to send it out anyway.  The message;  L'Opossum cannot be trusted for consistency.   I think the other reviews support this.  Usually at restaurants with great consistent food the chief complaint in reviews are often about the service.  At L'Opossum it appears to be the other way around.  There is consistently high praise for the service and the reviews are a mix of high praise for the food but also replete with complaints about the food and often the complaints are about overcooked food.  It is entirely possible to make sure that the food is always right.  The chef got a lot of money from me that he did not earn.  Including the wine which was not paired with a nice dinner. I may go back to L'Opossum.  However, they have communicated clearly to me what kind of restaurant they are - I had the wrong idea about L'Opossum.  Now I know that this is not a place to go for dining.  It is not a place I will go and spend money.   I will not risk ordering wine not knowing how the food will come out.   If we go back I will order a glass of wine.  Also I have learned that it is best to go somewhere else if it is not during the prime time of the evening and it is probably better to go on a weekday vs a busy weekend.  If you have established yourself as a regular you are probably safe, otherwise Buyer Beware - you are rolling the dice at L'Opossum. read more

We spend a lot of time in France and were really looking forward to this quirky French restaurant in Richmond. We booked months in advance and drove down from DC to celebrate a significant birthday. Sadly it was one of the worst meals I've had in a restaurant. The vibe was overly casual for the price point. Service was nice but unprofessional. And the food was a bizarre "let's combine everything into a single dish" appproach to cooking. Nothing about this restaurant speaks of French cuisine with the exception of the name. L'Opossum is simply the best "special meal" restaurant in Richmond. Period, end of story, drop the mic. While other venues and other chefs trade spaces on the various "Best Of" lists put out by magazines, newspapers, bloggers, and reviewers from faraway cities, L'Opossum just continues to amaze every time we visit. This is the first place I mention when asked for a recommendation for upscale dining, the first place I think about for anniversary or birthday celebrations, and the first place I consider for out of town guests. Except my brother. But that's another story. The place is subtly lit with a soundtrack that is retro and non-intrusive. The floor is larger than it would appear from the outside, leaving ample space for nice conversation. Without depending on molecular gastronomy or other parlor tricks, L'Opossum manages to surprise with every dish in one way or another. Service is perfect, and the atmosphere is relaxed upscale. This is on my "desert island restaurant list." Keep it in mind for some special evening. read more

Don't worry, they're on Open Table so it isn't super difficult to book! Some months/seasons are busier than others. The second thing you should know is L'Opossum is THE best restaurant in Richmond. Please go immediately. I waited three months for our last reservation at L'Opossum, and it was worth every minute. As an appetizer this time we got the five-spice venison, it was so fresh and a perfect starter to the meal. For dinner, I ordered the FILET MIGNON OF BEEF "SWELLINGTON" it's a filet mignon topped with a phyllo dough-wrapped duck butter. HOLY. COW. I can't wait to eat it again. It was one of the best meals I've ever had. As a dessert I got the apple tart; absolutely perfect execution. For a little bit more than 29 years, I had been waiting to turn 30. As time rolled on, I began to contemplate how would I recognize this milestone. Would I revel and refuse to acknowledge my age and regress toward my early twenties getting inappropriately intoxicated and potentially getting a regretful tattoo? Would I show up to the local bland buffet for the early bird special only to eat jello and retreat home to sit on my couch, afghan across my lap to counteract the chill, and slowly drift off to sleep by 6:00 PM? After hours of ponderous thought, I decided to go out to dinner with my parents and wife at L'Opossum, a choice which proved that wisdom does in fact come with age. My parents had been staying at my house for the prior 24 hours so save for the time I was at work, I had been self-medicating with whatever liquor bottle I had yet to drink dry in order to cope with their not at all overbearing presence. As such when it came time to leave for dinner I was forced to ask my father to drive, an act that in hindsight was minorly demeaning but in the moment I blissfully embraced, unencumbered due to my alcohol fueled haze. Eventually we arrived at the restaurant after making more than several wrong turns due to the fact I was having trouble accurately relaying the instructions given to me by google maps. I was pleasantly surprised to see that while parking was on street, there were ample spots available near the restaurant. We went inside and were seated immediately with our reservation. Once we had sat down, I began to open my eyes and take in my surroundings. The eclectic decorations ranged from star wars themed porcelain plates hung on the walls, to nude sculptures with Santa hats strategically placed over top of their manhood so as not to shame any of the male patrons. Everywhere you looked there was some new subtle detail that would catch your eye and make you smile. Our waitress soon came over and began to talk us through the menu. I use the word talk very loosely as what she did was more akin to painting a picture using her words as the brush and our imaginations as the canvas. She described things in such beautiful detail that I am confident had she told me there was rubber from a tire on the menu I would have bought it, happily payed full price and tipped 25%, all with a smile on my face. We ordered drinks, which consisted of wine for myself and my wife so we could feign sophistication in an effort to try and impress my parents, and egg nog for my father. All the drinks were delicious, the egg nog especially unique as it was thick enough that you could drink it traditionally or dive into it using a small spoon. We then ordered appetizers, which included the Faberge Egg Bedazzled With Caviar & Dill Cured Salmon (my choice as I refuse to turn 31 without having tried caviar), Vegan Orgy on a Texas Beach (my mother's choice as she was delighted at the prospect of ordering something with such a risqué name) and the French Onion Dip Gratine with Pecan-Currant Rye Bread (my father's choice as it was the closest thing he could get to Lay's dip). All the appetizers overwhelmed in both taste and presentation. As they were set down in front of us, we all paused and felt guilt when we eventually dug in because we felt as though we were destroying something more beautiful than any of us could ever create. The flavors on each appetizer were very complex, with multiple flavors in each competing but not overpowering each other. Shortly after our final bites of the appetizers, our entrees arrived. I had ordered A Brisk Fall Cookout in the Boneyard (rack of lamb), my wife had ordered Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes, my mother had ordered The Swank Bank (lobster mac and cheese, again she loves the edgy names), and my father ordered the Filet Mignon of Beef "Swellington". Again, before we were even able to eat, we had to sit back and admire the works of art placed in front of us. After several minutes of us sitting in silence, we wiped the tears that came to our eyes instigated by the beautiful art on our plates and we began to dig in. The food was again delicious. After finishing the meal, the waitress asked if we were interested in dessert. Desperate to stay in this Valhalla of fine dining I begged to see the dessert menu. Immediately I saw the La Petite Mort Au Chocolat En Flambe. I was sold not only because I have always wanted a dessert that has been lit on fire but also because I had taken French from 5th-10th grade and then for 3 semesters in college and I was anxious to prove to the table I had retained enough to order a dessert fluently. After stumbling my way through ordering the waitress smiled and returned shortly with our flambe. It was a great spectacle, on fire for nearly a minute and eventually when it went out, it tasted delicious. If the final 2/3 of my life can be half as spectacular as my evening at L'Opossum then I consider myself to be a lucky man I strongly recommend this to anyone looking. read more

If people think they are supposed to like something, then everyone wants a piece. They've obviously managed to market themselves to seem exclusive, and nowadays waiting in long lines or months for a reservation is a status symbol that people are happy to sign up for. I was personally not in a hurry to eat here, so when I saw a time slot available on our anniversary, I snatched it a month or so in advance and didn't think much of it. I even thought to myself when looking at OpenTable, "I wonder if they block out a bunch of these times to look busier than they really are." Wouldn't that be wild? LOL. I'm sure that's not the case. The service here was great - from the hostess to the bartender to the server. We were luckily able to grab a couple spots at the bar while we waited to be seated since we were early for our reservation. I got some cocktail special that I didn't see on their regular menu. "High" something or other. It was good. My husband said the Laura Palmer wasn't great. Our server was very knowledgable about the menu. We ordered the Vegan Orgy on Texas Beach app that everyone seems to like so much. I was really disappointed with it, and actually kind of surprised it made it onto their menu. I went with the halibut that he recommended and I did enjoy it. We decided to skip dessert since everything seemed kind of hit or miss and the group of young students sitting next to us were being extremely loud and disrespectful. Considering how dark the restaurant is, they probably should have a policy in place about flash cameras since it was pretty blinding. I used to think that policy was weird when I went to other dark, upscale places, but now I understand. It really does disrupt the ambiance when customers act like a*sholes. I mean, how many photos do you need to take of your beef Wellington...? Really? Came here for International Supper Club. I'm glad we did, because I never would have found this place otherwise! L'Opossum is located in a very secluded spot mixed in with houses in Oregon Hill. It is also a pretty small restaurant upon entering, which is something to keep in mind if you have a large group (might be best to make a reservation). Street parking outside is not too difficult to find. However, the interior is perhaps the most unique restaurant I have been to in all of Richmond. There are a bunch of candles and cool paper lanterns everywhere, as well as quite an assortment of paintings and random odds and ends throughout. The mirrored glass walls and charming music also help create a truly one-of-a-kind atmosphere. One of the unisex restrooms also had several distinctive clown paintings on the wall. The soap in the restroom was unsatisfying to me; it was of the foam variety but felt very watered down and not sudsy enough. The lighting of the restaurant's interior overall is also a little dark for my tastes, but to each his own. As for service, our waitress was excellent and was very patient. She was willing to split our check six ways even after she had printed one bill. She seemed to be stretched kind of thin though since I think there were only two servers for the entire restaurant. While she checked on us frequently, and there were many other runners as well to help with water refills, utensil changes, and food serving, the service was still rather slow. Our entire meal ended up taking about three hours. The menu is not too big, and the names are rather playful and creative. Some examples: "Polyamorous Hippie Three-Way," "Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes: All Crab, All the Time," and "Sweet & Innocent North Atlantic Salmon Beguiled into Comrade Dave's Enigmatic Embrace of a Crispy Horseradish Latke, Beet Velvet and a Tangle of Nefarious, Pinko Conspiracies." As for the food, it was truly quite excellent. From the start of our meal with mint-infused water in tall glasses, to warm bread served to us individually with light, delicious, homemade butter, to appetizers, entrees, and dessert, everything was executed with utmost precision. A lot of careful attention was paid to detail, and the presentation of every dish was stunning. So why the four stars? My escargot starter was excellent, but the generous snail meat was a little soft for my tastes (I prefer slightly chewier meat). My filet mignon was cooked to a perfect medium and flavor was phenomenal, but the seasoning/sauce was too salty and I was not able to fully enjoy the natural flavors of some components. Nevertheless, the red peppercorns were fun. And finally, my creme brulee dessert had a nice crunchy crust, but was rather thin so the custard to surface ratio was smaller than I had hoped. Prices are high, but so is the quality, and portions are decent with some dishes on the larger side. L'Opossum is still fairly new and it is an excellent dining establishment. Easily one of my favorite restaurants. Ever. This place is a must-try in Richmond. In the span of 3 days during our visit to Richmond, my friend and I came here twice. We're both foodies who've tried restaurants all over California, Texas, and NYC and we LOVED this place. Everything was prepared to perfection. You start the meal with some complementary warm bread and whipped butter. For an appetizer, I'd recommend the escargot and ham biscuit option. The escargot is tastefully buttery and tender. The ham biscuit is also hard to beat. My favorite dish (we tried 7 menu items) was the pork belly x scallop entree (the only con of this place is the hard-to-remember menu names). The scallop was perfectly tender without any stinginess or chewiness. The pork belly was juicy without being too fatty or too lean. If you're still hungry, I'd definitely recommend the crab cake entree as well. It's one of the best I've had and there's SO MUCH crab. The Swank Bank (mac and cheese) is pretty heavy and the portion is huge- it's delicious but I wouldn't recommend it if you're not too hungry. For desset, I'd highly recommend the La Petite Morte Chocolat en Flambe. They light it on fire in front of you; I wish I could attach the video. The dark chocolate is perfectly rich and literally melts in your mouth. It's clear that the chefs and servers have an immense amount of attention to detail. Couldn't have asked for better food or service. Ps if they don't have a table available, there may be walk-in seating open at the bar. read more

I had a reservations for 1. The cocktails were ok. The food was definitely less than what I was expecting and nothing that I haven't had at another run of the mill restaurant chain. I've been to some amazing restaurant. This was not one of them. The atmosphere was interesting and the staff was very pleasant.
