On our first night on Ortigia we decided to go to L'Osteria da Seby - we read about this place a lot before coming so our expectations were high. It's not easy to find this place - situated on the charming street. The place was packed but they managed to find a table for us - we didn't have reservation. It has nice, very Italian-family interior. We shared Insalata mista - fresh and big enough to share. For main course I got Ravioli maniace, my BF gamberone al marsala. First mine ravioli came - it was very tasty - fresh and flavorful. As his dish wasn't coming we ate it and were full. After 30 minutes we decided to ask when we can expect our shrimps - unfortunately they messed up orders and gave them to the couple next table - we had to wait a little bit longer to try them - big and good. We got free shots of local alcohol for dessert. They include 2 EUR per person "coperto" - for service. So extra tip is up to you.

This is a typical local sicilian restaurant and it's quite anonymous and difficult to find. We were the only not-Italian at the restaurant that evening. We shared a mixed platter if sicilian appetisers - I don't know what was on the plate, but it was so full of taste. Had some kind of fried potato, vegetables and some peppers with cheese on. For main course I had the seabass and my hubby had mixed seafood. My seabass was wrapped in grated potatoes and then fried on the pan, I've never tried that before, but it was amazing. Very juicy and full of flavour. My boyfriend liked his fish, got a small whole fish, tuna fillet and large shrimps. We were actually quite full after that, but the food was so good that we just had to try the dessert also... And that day they had tiramisu! It was sooooo good!

I ate here on my first night in Ortigia, and it set a worthy standard. Though the insalata mista was average, the Garganelle Montalbano was excellent. The dish is named for Salvo Montalbano, a Sicilian detective and gourmet who is the hero of a very popular series of novels by Andrea Cammilleri and a TV series. In fact, they have an entire Montalbano menu. The pasta was composed of tiny shrimps, mussels and clams bathed in a creamy pistachio pesto. Rich, but not overly so.
