After reading the 1 star reviews of a few shops and you just know you don't want to go there. I'm in east county, and the 5 star shop I used to go to has new owners. An Unknown. So I went back to Yelp. Looking for reviews that were mostly positive. Preferably shops that people went to after experiences with other shops. I had been given the runaround by a couple of shops that obviously don't really want to do vehicles older than 2000, or are a hobby business or something. Who opens a smog shop at 3pm? Or 2 pm. Even the ad listings don't know for sure. And M-F only. After 2 calls to that business I gave up. L2 was one of 3 businesses mentioned by a shop near them, who didn't do the older vehicles. I had a vehicle I had been working on for months. A truck I bought without any history other than the BAR site that said it had failed before it passed it's most recent test 10 years before. I believed I had the issues all worked out but would the tailpipe test agree? I had been stressing for weeks and just needed it to be over with. I went to L2 on a Saturday. I parked and walked there to take a look. Walked up and talked with a man when he finished with a customer. He said bring it in. I went and got the truck, drove it in and waited with a couple of guys waiting for a smog on an older Toyota truck. Theirs passed. $80 out the door. I was past the point of worrying about the cost. I didn't ask. But I had 2 Yelp quotes around $100 from shops in El Cajon. My smog test didn't take too long. I saw the guy with his big mirror, looking for numbers and then looking on his laptop to confirm CA approved catalytics. And then he said mine passed. $80. The previous shop I went to was pretty. Had murals on the walls. This is a no-fuss shop, open reasonable hours. Charges a fair price for pre-2000 tests. Has the older machine running, even on a Saturday. That's the stuff I care about. Amen for these guys! I think I saw three generations of father/son/grandson(?) working there. The guy that helped me was super cool, friendly and efficient. They should add "fast & friendly" to their business signs. Anyhow, as I pulled up their driveway, they had just completed a smog for another customer who was driving away. Their shop is a bit rough looking, I'll admit. But, he just seemed so cool. I handed him my paperwork and keys and showed him the CAP letter requiring proof my car won't pass smog (within last 90 days). He knew what it was and just nicely showed me where I can wait and told me it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. And indeed he/they (younger guy assisting), got it done super rapido. I hadn't taken a moment to ask how much, but once he was done with me car, he invited me into his office, while affirming that my car did not pass smog. He completed the work invoice and said it would only $41 (change), because obviously no smog cert. needed. I was so grateful he didn't try to take advantage like that other smog place Hillcrest Smog Test & Auto Repair by the Normal St. DMV apparently tried to do.
