I'm a local here in Truckee. Have always walked past this place with the curiosity of their food quality. Was super unimpressed. I ordered veggie fajitas. They were super greasy and not very flavorful. Prices were ridiculous considering the quality. Was bothered often by the busser and asked "are you doing alright" or "can I get you anything" an obnoxious amount. He meant well but I wanted to enjoy time with the family without getting interrupted a bunch. Don't recommend. Won't be returning. read more

I'm so happy to see this family run business back open and being run by the next generation! The services was extremely fast, attentive and super friendly. The margaritas are always delicious with a generous pour of tequila. I'm a fan of the Suiza Chicken enchiladas and I was happy to find the same delicious offering. I only came here for a few margaritas with chips and pico de gallo The margaritas were ok - made with a bottled mix instead of fresh lime juice. The chips were perfect but the pico de gallo was mostly juice. read more

I ate here a year ago and thought this place was fine. Something seems to have changed though. Hands down the worst beef fajitas I've ever had. In fact I don't think they know how fajitas are even made. Their recipe seems to be: Take a can of tomato soup and dump it on a plate, boil some beef until it has the texture of a spare tire, making sure to not season it and then add some onions and call it good. Seriously gross. I only ate it because I hadn't had any food in 8 hours and needed something, anything foodish in my stomach. Otherwise I would have sent it back. My family and I are not from around here, we live about 2 hours south. This was the first time we at Truckee and decided to eat here. It's a small place, not too much parking available, however, it's very comfy and traditional. Everyone was very friendly! Everything is clean, including the bathroom! We had a pitcher of their Guava Margarita and it was delicious! Not too sweet but very flavorful, different from the typical Mexican restaurants that offer margaritas! The food was really good, one of the VERY FEW places out there that offer a more authentic flavor profile! At most places you can recognize when they use sauce from a can compared to house made, and this place does not use from a can!! When ever I come out here again, I'll be sure to stop by here!! Have eaten there over the years and it just does not seem to get better. And no this had nothing to do with Covid. Did an order to go of 3 chicken taco 3 "beef". Not only did it take 30+ minutes for 6 ala carte taco for $30. They were horrible- tacos fell apart. That I really don't care because if they are good ill eat them with a fork. So while I waited I say the staff feeding themselves to wit one server bragged he was on his "9th carne asada" taco, three of which were probably mine. There was no one there - I should have taken my wife's advise again and not go there. This place is hit and miss and there are so many good Mexican restaurants in truckee. read more

I am a local. Truckee has gotten out of control in the cost of dining out. That by itself isn't a problem it's just a reality. Then you find a place like LaBamba! This local family has owned this great restaurant and bar for 25 years. In fact May 5th is their anniversary party. You can come with a large group or slide up to someone at the bar for dinner by yourself. They will make you feel like part of the family. The feel of the place is still Old Truckee and the drinks are part of that tradition too. Generous pours, fair prices and an atmosphere that is completely unpretentious, will bring you back over and over and expose you to what Truckee wonse was. You couldn't find a nicer family to spend your dinning and drinking dollars with at this altitude. read more

Carmen and Pilar always make us feel welcome without skipping a beat. A group of friends and I have spent many a night here during the ski season over the last few years here. Not good. Went about 6 weeks ago, they did not seem to be obeying an sort of internal dining limit and employees were definitely not wearing masks. I am giving the food a 2 because of 3 reasons. 1) the restaurant is offering 1/2 off all dinners on a sign outside the restaurant. But whenni placed my order to go they informwd me it was full price for togo orders. Okay, but it would have been nice if the advertisement specified dine in only. 2) i was told a togo order would take about 10-15 min. Perfect because i have an 18 month old who needs to go home; hence the togo order in the first place. After 25 min i was sitting at the table waiting for the bill. Finally 3) when i got home and looked at the food i could not be more disappointed. There was not even a 1/2 portion in the box. If this is the serving portion you serve for dine in customers you are overcharging. $15 for fajitas and there is not even enough for 2 tortillas. Very disappointed. read more

Worst Mexican I've ever had. I'm not exaggerating when I say that. My wife and sister in law were along and agreed with me completely. We were up around Tahoe for a President's Day get away back in February. My SIL lives in Toronto so was craving Mexican. We came across this place and decided why not... Big mistake. We were put on notice when the chips and salsa came out. The tomatoes in the salsa had that gelatinous texture that makes it clear they have spent a good portion of their lives in a can. Aside from gelatinous tomatoes the salsa itself was flat and flavorless. The second sign of a problem was when the "avocado" dressing on SIL's salad was revealed to be mayonnaise with some greenish color to give the illusion of avocado. While those two issues would have been forgivable, the heaping piles of flavorless fried tortillas, beans, rice, and pollo that followed were consistently disappointing. It takes a lot to make me dislike Mexican food. The one positive thing you can say about the food at this place is that the portions are generous but with food of this poor quality that's not necessarily a positive. I'll give the wait staff credit too since they were pleasant; it's hard for me to give a 1 star review when I haven't been personally offended by the staff but this food was really just that bad. Our hosts at the B&B told us afterwards that the Taco Depot next door is actually quite good. I can't testify to that but I can say with confidence that whatever they are serving has to be superior to the food at La Bamba. read more

Chips and salsa - complimentary but hard and tasteless chips with more of a plain tomato pico de Gallo. Dinner salad was really nice and included with the meal. Had the steak fajitas - there just isn't anything special to note. Bland with dry, overcooked beans. No real flavor to the meat sauce. Guac was plain. Steak was not tough. Pretty decent sit down Mexican joint in Truckee. As most of the residents will tell you there just isn't enough variety in the town but La Bamba has been a staple here for years. The staff seemed really indifferent to our presence, which, as one who has worked in customer service oriented jobs for a while, makes me physically angry. I mean, if you're running a business you oughta greet those who chose to enter your establishment with immediate gratification based on the fact that those chose to enter your fancy restaurant over all the other choices. Generally I will leave a place if no employee acknowledges my presence within a few minutes. We held out because my companions wanted Mexican food, and were seated, where we waited another 10 minutes for someone to come by with water. The food took quite a while to show up as well, despite the fact that the place wasn't that crowded. The waitress was pleasant. Still a fan of this place. Really good food and service is very friendly. The one thing that upset me was they were out of sourcream!!! How can this be possible! And with my mexican food I need a lot of sourcream. So my friend and I drove down the street to safeway and got sour cream..LOL. Apparently they received a batch of sour cream but it was moldy..so at least they did not serve that. The manager apologized to us afterwards and said they will definitely have an abundance of sour cream next time. I had the chicken chimichange,,really good. Literally the worst Mexicanan food, service, prices and quality I've ever tried. The waiters never said please or thank you. We had four people at our table they left and came back between eaCh of us individugly ordering. Took thirty five minutes to get more water. The water was straight from the tap. They have only two servers and a couple lady's "just here to help" whatever that means. They got three of our orders wrong once and one order wrong twice. Short haired gentleman with tats and glasses was rude. Didn't apologize. Overheard the chefs saying " we hope this one has chicken in the enchiladas" even though they were supposed to be beef. Bartender was super cool younger guy with tat on right arm kudos to him. But literally the worst service and bad food. We had ordered burritos and they gave it to us with so much cheese on the plate, burnt cheese. On. the. plate. Why? Anywho if you're considering waiting for a long time your drinks to be from tap your mixed drink to look liike something from Jamba Juice and taste like old milk again idk how. THIS PLACE IS AWESOME. Sooo authentic and such nice people who run the place and work there. We had to wait like 45min for a table which was unfortunate, BUT it was the week between Christmas and New Years aka by far the busiest weekend in Tahoe. I doubt you would have this problem on other nights. Everything is great that we had. Pretty large portions too... Free unlimited chips and salsa for the table is nice and it's totally something you would never see at an NYC restaurant. It was decorated really nicely for the holidays too - nice touch!
