If you're in Kings Beach and craving legit, no-frills Mexican food, La Mexicana absolutely delivers. Easy 5 stars. The fish tacos were LOADED with large pieces of deep-fried fish. They were excellent. Like, the kind where you pause mid-bite and nod. The enchiladas were exactly what you want after a long Tahoe day: cheesy, saucy, and piping hot in the best kind of way. Comfort food perfection. Everything tasted fresh and made with care. A couple quirks to know going in: * Beware the green salsa. It is SPICY. Do not mistake it for guacasalsa. It's actually spicier than the red salsa and has some serious kick. * Chips aren't free and only come in one large size, so plan accordingly if you're just looking for a small side. Lovely neighborhood taco spot in North Lake Tahoe! We went pretty late at night and there was no line on a Saturday. Quick ordering process for takeout. We perused the market that is attached to the restaurant while we waited for our order. A great way to past time and loved all the authentic Mexican spices and produce there. Usually restaurants in Tahoe during winter season are super packed on the weekends with long wait times. But La Mexicana delivered authentic food in a prompt manner. Food was good. I got the carnitas and al pastor tacos for the combo. We also got an additional fish taco. The food was more than enough for me. I was pretty full after the two, and I pushed myself to split the fish taco. Fish taco was pretty good and had some good spice to it. I recommend giving that one a try. read more

Solid little burrito spot! I was so tired of fried bar food and just wanted a burrito. Found this little gem. They share a location with a meat market. Service was friendly and quick. I ordered at the window and had a pretty thick fatty of an asada burrito in about 5 min. It was fairly priced and was much better than just junk food. I destroyed it fairly quickly. Whether you are there for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, they have awesome burritos. We will often pick up the breakfast burritos and then walk over to the beach to eat them on a picnic table in the sunshine. Chorizo and eggs are the best, but I also get their carnitas quite a bit. Unfortunately had a terrible experience here. I called a few days ahead to order a très leches cake since it said on the website that larger cakes need at least 72 hours notice. The lady on the phone said that large cakes could only be ordered in person. I explained that we were visiting for the weekend for a celebration and that there would be no way to come in person and order. She insisted that it would be fine and that the cake could be ordered and made within a day. I found that pretty suspicious but alright. Fast forward to Saturday, we came in the store and asked to place an order for a cake. Sure enough, the lady said we had to order in advance. I explained the situation and she kept saying no at least 48 hours in advance...which I had already tried to do. So in the end, we left without a cake. Would not come back here. read more

We like to grab a breakfast burrito and head across the street to eat it while staring at the lake. When they have pastries, make sure you stuff a few of those in your bag too! This time I decided to try something different and had the shrimp burrito with sour cream and I was blown away by (1) how many shrimp were in it and (2) how perfectly seasoned they were. Got into Kings Beach early evening before Labor Day weekend. I was craving a burger, but the first spot I tried had already closed. After a quick search (and not wanting Subway!), I came across La Mexicana. Perfect... Mexican food to go sounded great, and to my surprise, they also had burgers on the menu. I ordered both to take back to my rental, and while waiting, I browsed the market. Ended up picking up some Mexican baked goods for dessert and the next morning's breakfast... yum! The staff at the food counter were friendly and the market folks were very helpful. Btw, the produce looked very fresh and well presented. It's a nice little market and food stand combo, very cute, and I'll definitely be coming back next time I'm in Kings Beach. read more

One of the best Mexican places I've had. The food joint is attached at the front of a tiny market. Believe me when I say tiny! If you're claustrophobic be warned this market is not for you. I've been coming here for a long time now and it's been great watching them grow like they have. I don't live in the area anymore but anytime I visit this is a must stop for me and whoever I'm with. I've introduced countless people to this establishment and they've become regulars. Parking can be tight at times but there's a spare parking lot before the market. Heads up it's on a one way street so if you miss the spare lot or market you'll have to drive around. I got the chimichanga with shredded beef. I don't get chimichangas anywhere but here. They seem to get it right every time. It's super hot, sometimes spicy too. I love hearing the crunch of the deep fried tortilla before it gets soggy from the salsa I add. The shredded beff is super good too and blends well with everything. It's topped with sour cream, and I'll sometime order guac on it too. With a side drink of either horchata, jarrito, or a Mexican coke im in heaven. Haha. I've tried other items on the menu and they're all good but this is my first official review of them. Enchilada Combo (*4/5*): this was the best thing ordered out of 10 people. We got pastor which was really flavorful & tender. The sauce that was covering it was delicious. The rice & beans were also yummy. Lengua Reg Tacos (*3/5*): For how much meat they top the taco with, you're definitely getting a lot of value out of it. The lengua was super tender and soft but it was very bland (almost as if there was no salt at all). If they added just a little bit more salt, it would've tasted much better. Doesn't help that the salsa it comes with was also bad -- super watery & bland. Deep Fried Tacos (*3.5/5*): You can only get chicken or shredded beef (which I think is birria meat) with this. I was in the King's Beach area this holiday weekend and yep, it's packed with people everywhere! We wanted to get some lunch and hopefully not have to wait like an hour to get food. I remember there's this Mexican grocery store that serves food as well just off the main street here in King's Beach. La Mexicana serves food like a taqueria, not really set up for a sit down and be served kinda place. We parked a little ways away and walk to the store. There were still a lot of people in here but not as bad as it could have been. I ordered my usual burrito with al pastor for $11 and my friend wanted a steak burrito but wet style with sauce over it $13. They were made decently quick. Just basically plop the stuff on the big flour tortilla and roll it up and there you go. My first bite into my burrito I could tell the real Mexican flavors, as compared to Chipotle .. yuck! My fried liked his wet burrito too. Mostly I'm just glad we could get food and not run into a big crowded hassle this weekend. 3 minute walk from where we stayed, so that was a plus. They have ample amount of outdoor seating in the back, picnic style bench with umbrellas sitting on wood chips. You can order via the phone or walk up to the cashier and order and wait to have your order called. They also have a small market and bakery inside. The bakery is nothing amazing. I got the Super Nachos, it was okay, I prefer if the chips weren't all soft. A little stingy on the meat. And overall hard to mix everything together. The fries are actually pretty good. If Kendrick ate here he'd be like "Ewwwww, that TACO good, why don't you sit it on my taste buds?" Ask for extra red & green (tomatillo) sauce. Proceed to ladle their glowing green salsa straight on top of the chips. Carry on by adding a scoop of the screaming hot red salsa in an empty part of the bowl. It's hot enough you'll want to exercise portion control. Finally, scoop up fresh pico de gallo straight on top of the chips and introduce the red sauce gently. Try those sauces on their vegan nachos. Your tum-tum gonna feel gooooood. I do wish they had a specialized vegan menu with faux meat proteins. That would add an entire star. La Mexicana has yet to offer vegan mock meat proteins which is strange. Products from Gardein, Beyond Meat, Yves & Tofurkey are available in bulk from restaurant suppliers. Those items are cruelty free and provide as much protein as their meat counterparts. it'd be easy for the restaurant to get the new ingredients as well. Vegan vegi-protein crumbles are similarly easy to find. I can't say they fully get their vegan clientele yet, they way Maria's does in south lake. Still i appreciate La Mexicana! :-) read more

Fast service and good food. The market is a bit too cramped to find anything. Got this for take out and really enjoyed it. We were recommended to get this as take out from the brewery around the corner. It was a good call and we always enjoy mexican food. We frequent mexican markets in my home town, so this was a welcome feel. The kitchen being set separately from the market was a bit odd though. The kitchen staff was really efficient and very busy at getting the orders in and the food out pretty quickly. The market itself was hard to navigate and if you have a 40" waist you probably won't be able to fit through. Friendly staff though. The food was good, and the portions were decent. That is for the tacos and taquitos. Came back the next day for a burrito, and given the price we expected a large size similar to our Mexican markets back home. The burrito was a huge let down, it was pretty tasty, but was about 60% of the size I was used to for twice the cost. Overall a pretty good spot, and I'd definitely go back next time and avoid the burrito. read more

Delicious! We stopped by this place after dark on our way back to our Airbnb in Truckee one night. So glad we did. We took a turn off the main road and this place was lit. There's an outside walk-up window where a good sized line forms for late night orders. Inside, towards the back is a pan selection: pastries, cookies, rolls, cakes. We ordered a few things: Mexican taco: This came free with Yelp check-in: A delicious chicken taco. I don't eat much meat these days, but had a bite of it and it was yummy. All the right spices and flavors you hope for in an authentic taco. Chile relleno with beans and rice & another Chile relleno: Both the hubby and I enjoyed the relleno. They were pillowy, savory, melty, and oozy. All good things you'd want in your mouth. He said his rice and beans were on point. We even purchased a few pan for the road. Ate them over the next few days. Some of the best we've both had anywhere. Very fresh. They kept really well, too. The only downfall...they don't have this quality of Mexican food near us. Sad panda. We came here for a late dinner after my husband finished coaching a lacrosse game nearby. It's a market that also has a window for ordering food. There's no indoor seating but they do have some patio seating for warmer weather. My husband got the El Burrito Americano and I got the Tacos Combo (2 tacos, rice, beans). I chose carne asada and carnitas as my two meats. The entrees were appropriately priced, ours ranged from $12.99 to $14.99. We wanted a side of chips and salsa and were shocked at the prices for those--chips were $4.99 and a small 8oz side of salsa was $8.99. The total for those two items came out to more than the burrito! They do make the salsa in-house and it was delicious, but I don't think it was worth $8.99. I was glad we got a ton of chips at least. Besides that, everything was really good! The burrito was massive and my husband loved it. The Tacos Combo was the perfect amount of food, my favorite taco was the carnitas one. Food was served relatively quickly, we didn't have to wait very long. Overall this is a good spot but I wish they had some indoor seating for cooler evenings.
