House-made hot sauces and the remains of chips & salsa
    Catherine C.

A few days ago, we had a most delicious lunch at Casa Baeza (after hike/walking the Donner Tunnels). The restaurant is super cute, conveniently located in Downtown Truckee, and the food is fresh, tasty and delicious. (They even had house-made hot sauces, Yum!) And (icing-on-the-cake) the service was super friendly. We'll definitely be back soon.

I have mixed feelings about this place. The waiter was so sweet, but he just seemed so busy considering he was the only one on the floor. He seemed frazzled and forgot things we asked him to bring. It's very homey and like a cabin inside. The chips were delicious, along with all the three different salsas. They unfortunately did not have any green salsa. I got the horchata and it tasted like there was overly too much condense milk in it because it was thick. The street tacos were definitely not authentic, but did it's job for a quick lunch. I will not be back.

Ambience was nice, and service was friendly. We were given chips and salsa as soon as we sat down, and food came out promptly. We are all native Californians so we have high standards when it comes to Mexican food. Rice and beans were really good and so was the salsa, the meats were where the flavor was lacking. It was fine and food tasted fresh, it just wasn't delicious. Our drinks were good, Cadillac, cantarito and a paloma. Might be worth going back for happy hour.

Loved it here on a busy Thursday night they were able to seat quickly and service just as quickly and friendly as can be! Tacos were a good loved the habanero salsa! Check it out if you're in truckee!

One of the more reasonably priced options in Downtown Truckee! We went for dinner last night and for a group of three with an app the total was $50. Compared to the other options in the area, this is very reasonable! We started with rocket fries and then I got the taco salad with carnitas meat. They forgot the guacamole and salsa and I had to ask but it was brought shortly after. Flavors weren't out of this world but tasty and fit the bill for us.

House margarita. Pretty good, but very sticky glass lol.

I was in town for a conference and had dinner at Casa Baeza the last night of my stay; I didn't realize how popular this place was on weekday nights! I think it may have been because of the "taco Tuesday" special lol, but either way I can see the appeal. My group was tucked into the back of the restaurant at a table that gave us a little bit of privacy and was also out of the main thoroughfare of the restaurant so that we weren't getting bumped constantly by people walking around. We were greeted right away by a friendly man that took our drink order and brought a round of waters to the table while we decided on our meals. Drinks came quickly and after placing our dinner order, it gave me a chance to really take in my surroundings. CB seems to have its procedures down pat lol - the efficiency of the staff is honestly impressive. They all seem to work together so flawlessly that a glass is never empty and a dirty dish is never left on a table, occupied or not. Everyone that we interacted with was also super friendly. Our meals came to the table pretty quick and the plates were very hot - something I always like to see. I got a chicken chimichanga that came with a side or rice and beans. The beans and rice were okay; nothing to write home about and similar to many other restaurants' recipes (to my tastebuds anyway). The chimichanga was very yummy, though! The red sauce left a bit to be desired, but the flavors of the meat and the fried exterior were pretty dang good. It was more than I was able to finish so I ended up with some leftovers to take back to my hotel. Overall a good experience with fast, friendly service. I think Truckee is a cool little town and do hope to be back in the future, so if I am, I am sure I'd be up for giving something else on the menu a try! Maybe the tacos on a Tuesday... lol.

I got there about 1pm which is cutting it close as it closes at 2 for dinner switchover at 5. but they were still bustling and tables were 3/4 full. Parking was easy although the lot is shared by many stores so i have seen it full at other times. They have indoor seating but the covered patio was beautiful today. I got the burger and instead of fries i took a chance and got the roasted tomato and red pepper soup. Yes i know soup is an odd pairing with a burger but i really wanted to try it. And so glad i did! It was fantastic. Great depth of flavor. The burger was grilled to a medium temp which i prefer, and i didn't even have to specify that. Great flavor in the patty and the fried egg in top added to it once the yolk was broken and oozed down the side. I asked for ketchup on the side because it comes with an aioli on the bun but i really didn't need it. The aioli was delicious. Service was spot on with good recommendations. Only nitpik was that $5 for a can of coke that is not refillable is a bit expensive when i can get coke for a buck all day elsewhere.

The main entree was…read morea Spaghetti Bolognese which is always my favorite since my Italian grandma made it for me. I entered and sat at the bar because the place was busy and it was a 20 minute wait. I ordered the special. The appetizer was Seared Scallops with a coconut cream polenta. The scallops were done right seared on both sides and the polenta was creamy and full of flavor. Then came the Spaghetti Bolognese which I was looking forward to. It looked appealing but once I tried it the flavor was not what I expected. It was a meat sauce but not a traditional bolognese. It had a different flavor with no tomatoes I think it was mainly wine based. Unfortunately I was expecting a traditional bolognese and it threw me off. And I asked for bread and they didn't have any. I took the dessert home a yellow cake with cream and a raspberry sauce. It was very good. The main thing I'm disappointed with is the Spaghetti Bolognese being not a traditional bolognese. I have eating breakfast here before and it was quite good.

I'll say right off, I'm giving them 4-stars since I had time to just grab one drink and a snack. I'm sure when I come back and can hang out for longer, the next review will easily bump up to the 5-star level. Firstly, this is a cool hole in the wall, very nice ambiance, and set back in a way that makes it feel a bit like a speakeasy. The decor is very stylish and atmospheric, with plenty of comfy chairs and spaces at the bar, and the staff were quite friendly. And while I'm not the biggest fan of these in here, the bar has many countertop video poker machines, should you be inclined to play. This is a full bar, so they have plenty of selections for wine, beer, and spirits. But the main attraction are their house cocktails. Only had time to try one on this visit, but that Saffron Sazerac was very interesting indeed, and definitely makes me want to swing by and try more of their menu. And should you need something to snack on, they also have a small menu of bar bites, which is just enough to hit the spot. And as for prices, I found them pretty darn reasonable, especially given this is Tahoe, we're talking about. So yeah, all said, I have been fairly impressed with Gaviota. Definitely going to keep them on my short list of drinking spots on North Shore, and I think anyone looking for a classy beverage will love it here too. Hope to swing by again soon.
