We had a lovely family dinner before my oldest grandson appeared in Chicago at the nearby Community Theater. The food was all delicious, especially the Taquitos and taco platter. The very old cabin style building was a treat to see. We had a bit of service glitches but it did appear there was new ordering tech our waitress was not fully at a comfortable level. I have mixed feelings about this place. The waiter was so sweet, but he just seemed so busy considering he was the only one on the floor. He seemed frazzled and forgot things we asked him to bring. It's very homey and like a cabin inside. The chips were delicious, along with all the three different salsas. They unfortunately did not have any green salsa. I got the horchata and it tasted like there was overly too much condense milk in it because it was thick. The street tacos were definitely not authentic, but did it's job for a quick lunch. When we tried to correct them, it actually got worse. Communication seemed to be part of the problem. They have a full liquor bar and I ordered a common mixed drink -- that I couldn't drink. I wanted to like this place .. Nuevo Mexican cuisine in a funky setting. That's an easy sell for me. But I just didn't like their particular recipes. Nothing quite hit and I don't really want the dishes again. They were asking customers to fill out a survey because they were reviewing their menu. I didn't fill it out at the time.. it was my first visit. But my feedback is: Truckee has plenty of more traditional Mexican food (though, none of it is singularly great). Nuevo should be a proper differentiator in town. It should work if the recipes are great. I'd point to Mari Chuy's Tequileria in Rancharrah as doing it quite well. Or the trends common in Scottsdale. Cute cabin-like restaurant perfect for Truckee. We were in our way home from Reno and wanted a good Mexican lunch. Took a while to be seated even though there were only 3 tables of 3-4 people. Large nice-looking bar at the entrance. They left a water pitcher at the table and a small bowl of salsa but no chips. So when we ordered food I inquired about the chips and she brought them over. They were warm. Salsa was lacking and reminded me of ketchup or a tomato paste base. Not very flavorful. I ordered the crispy taco and enchilada meal with an asada taco and chicken enchilada. I opted for the green and red sauce half and half on top of the enchilada. The food took awhile to come out. The taco was a corn tortilla but it was not crispy at all. More street taco vibe. Asada was dry. Enchilada was smothered in so much cheese that it got stuck in my throat when swallowing it. Sauces were not good either. I left the majority of my enchilada for my dog. By boyfriend ordered the nachos with asada. He does not like onions tomatoes or cilantro so he asked if there weee tomatoes or onions or cilantro in the guacamole. The server said there was so he asked to sub avocado for the guac because of that. No where on the description did it say there were onions and cilantro on the nachos but when it arrived cilantro and onions were all over it. We did not complain or send it back but when the server came by to ask how everything was we explained the issue and she kind of got defensive about it. I told her we're just being honest and they may want to look at their menu and update it to accurately describe their menu items and what is included. Overall not impressed. read more

We have been going to Casa Baeza for over 20 years when we visit Tahoe. This time was our last as both service and food were terrible. Started with trying to book a reservation for 6 people online for a Saturday. Their site was only showing a 9pm reservation. So I called the restaurant to no answer. We then stopped in around 2pm (2 tables dining and 10 loud guys in the bar) and the waitress took my 6:30 resie on her iPhone. We enter at 6:30 and the restaurant is half full. Not a good sign. Order a pitcher of top shelf margaritas for $35 which comes filled with ice and tastes limey and not strong like the old days. We got 4 drinks out of it. Waiter also spills a glass of red wine all over the table. Not starting out well. We order and those with enchiladas were nearly inedible. Cold refried beans, orange hard rice, chicken enchiladas with brown hard chicken with hard bland tortilla. What happened to the delicious suizas they used to have? Chips were stale and cold. Bill comes and waiter has it set to 20% tip. Restaurant is empty on a Saturday night by 7:30pm. He said they changed chefs but they need to up their game. Ambience was nice, and service was friendly. We were given chips and salsa as soon as we sat down, and food came out promptly. We are all native Californians so we have high standards when it comes to Mexican food. Rice and beans were really good and so was the salsa, the meats were where the flavor was lacking. This place was surprisingly bad. I am pretty forgiving to restaurants and restaurant workers as it's such a hard business to be in. But this one, I have to warn you about. The food was just bland. All the flavors were off. The chips tasted bland. The salsa was flavorless. Even the rice was terrible. The service was rushed, and they got 2 of 4 orders completely wrong, and had to remake them. At the end the meal, the server rushed me into paying her without showing me an itemized bill. She also pre-selected a 20% tip on her credit card machine. The amount seemed off, so I asked her for an itemized receipt upon payment. That's when I realized that she had charged me for extras I never ordered and that were never served. Homey atmosphere with relaxed ambiance. Service was on the slower side as we happened to visit on a training day, but the staff was very kind. The food was pretty standard for Americanized dishes. We ordered the chicken chimichanga (side portions were on the small side), a torta with rocket fries, and a casa wrap, all of which we each rated a 3. The options for Mexican food in Truckee seem rather limited, so I would recommend this establishment if you are strongly craving it. Ambiance: cute and quant Service: terrible. Took over 5 minutes to seat us. Took over 15 minutes to take our order. Took our order after the person who got seated well after us right next to us. Food eventually came but the person next to us was served first and almost done by the time ours came. Food: excellent. Some errors in the order which we later found out the system was down so they didn't get all the information. But it was very good. Bottom line I do appreciate good food but not sure I can let that over ride the bad service. Was it our servers fault? Not sure she was slammed with people coming in and not enough servers. One of the more reasonably priced options in Downtown Truckee! We went for dinner last night and for a group of three with an app the total was $50. Compared to the other options in the area, this is very reasonable! We started with rocket fries and then I got the taco salad with carnitas meat. Stopped by tonight- the manager was a TOTAL DICK VAN DYKE. I ordered the nachos with Carne Asada, when the plate came he threw it in the table, the entire night he had an attitude and seemed bothered by our requests. Charged us 3.50 for soda water. I was in town for a conference and had dinner at Casa Baeza the last night of my stay; I didn't realize how popular this place was on weekday nights! I think it may have been because of the "taco Tuesday" special lol, but either way I can see the appeal. My group was tucked into the back of the restaurant at a table that gave us a little bit of privacy and was also out of the main thoroughfare of the restaurant so that we weren't getting bumped constantly by people walking around. We were greeted right away by a friendly man that took our drink order and brought a round of waters to the table while we decided on our meals. Drinks came quickly and after placing our dinner order, it gave me a chance to really take in my surroundings. CB seems to have its procedures down pat lol - the efficiency of the staff is honestly impressive. They all seem to work together so flawlessly that a glass is never empty and a dirty dish is never left on a table, occupied or not. Everyone that we interacted with was also super friendly. Our meals came to the table pretty quick and the plates were very hot - something I always like to see. I got a chicken chimichanga that came with a side or rice and beans. The beans and rice were okay; nothing to write home about and similar to many other restaurants' recipes (to my tastebuds anyway). The chimichanga was very yummy, though! The red sauce left a bit to be desired, but the flavors of the meat and the fried exterior were pretty dang good. It was more than I was able to finish so I ended up with some leftovers to take back to my hotel. Overall a good experience with fast, friendly service. I think Truckee is a cool little town and do hope to be back in the future, so if I am, I am sure I'd be up for giving something else on the menu a try! Visiting the family cabin at Donner Lake and decided to make a quick stop for lunch at Casa Baeza. Great little place, not too packed on a Sunday afternoon. Service was quick, and I liked that since we were in business mode. We started off with a variety of tacos. I had a carnes asada taco. Corn tortillas were handmade and yummy. The carne asada needed a bit more seasoning, but good with salsa on it. I also had a chile relleno a la carte. Filling, not bad, but my palate was yearning for a bit more heat. My son had a tamale, which was on the "thin" side. Substantial eats, but I'll look for other alternatives next time around, Great, prompt service. Sunday evening, Easter Sunday in Truckee. I had an emergency run to Truckee, so decided to spend Easter evening there. I always pass by this restaurant, decided to try it. First off, not a lot of people here probably due to the holiday. We went in, and when I looked to the left, I thought the bar was really cute. The barstools were kind of low, and the bar all together was very inviting. We opted to sit at the bar and have some appetizers and of course... Cadillac margarita. My wife does not drink tequila very much, and she had a difficult time getting a cocktail to her liking. She ordered a fuzzy navel. The bartender apologized and said they have no orange juice nor did they have peach schnapps. so, she did without a cocktail for the evening... Kind of sad. What we ordered: Cadillac margarita rocks no salt Dirty Caesars shots (shrimp in a kind of tequila-based bloody Mary shot) Chips and salsa Volcano tacos with pork/Carnitas The volcano tacos were actually quite delicious. I also enjoyed the shot and the Cadillac margarita was perfect Hazel was our bartender and she was absolutely amazing. We all know that quite often on a Wednesday night, the bartender has a ton of drinks to make, as well as wait on the people who sit at the bar. she did a great job taking care of us and all of our needs. Our Tax Guy in Truckee recommended this place for lunch. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars!! Nice little place with a rustic ambiance. We sat at a little table in the corner. We stopped in just after they opened on a Saturday morning. Love the cozy, homey atmosphere. We were 1 out of 2 tables here so we were taken care of. The complimentary chips + salsa had us salivating for our main entrees. I wished I had more room to finish my plate because it was so delicious! The meat + bell peppers + onions were perfectly marinated & cooked; I could just eat a whole plate of it. The other items just added to the culinary happiness in our mouths.
