I came to this Mexican restaurant called La Barquita , and it was absolutely amazing. It honestly makes sense why everyone was standing outside waiting the food was worth it. The chips and salsa at the beginning were good, but I was a little surprised the salsa wasn't spicy at all. I was definitely expecting a little kick, especially from a Mexican restaurant, so that was a bit shocking. The beans were a no for me, and the guacamole could use a little more flavor. Now the food itself in the molcajete absolutely delicious. The meat tender, and full of flavor, and the cheese was perfectly melted. The chorizo was really good too. I didn't get to try the chicken, but the sauce, I will say I've had better before; this one was very tomato-forward, so it tasted a little more like tomato sauce not what I expected. But the quality of the meat made up for it. The menudo was absolutely delicious as well. The restaurant is small, but it has a very warm, family-oriented atmosphere. Service was great definitely a team effort from the cashier/hostess to the waitress. Jazmine was my waitress and she was the sweetest. Overall, I really enjoyed it and would definitely come back. Tried a new Mexican food restaurant from a friend's recommendation today. As much as I love to rate family owned restaurants with 5 stars, I just can't do it for this one. Here we go; to start with the salsa was in need of salt, after I added salt it was pretty good. The white corn tortillas, my wife's favorite, had no flavor, needed more salt. My wife ordered the Supreme Fajitas, chicken, shrimp and steak. She loved the chicken and shrimp but the steak was tough. The beans are not typical refried beans but they were ok. I had the Chili Rojo burrito and it's not your typical red chili burrito but I did enjoy it. The beef had good flavor but a little tough. The red chili sauce is not your typical red chili sauce but still ok. If you are looking for typical Sonoran Mexican style food then this probably won't make you too happy but........it's at least worth a try. The place is small but busy, people waiting to get in so who am I to say you will or won't like it. So give it a try, it's family owned and deserved of an effort. If you are looking for really good Mexican food in PHX look no further and come here! The area might seem a bit sketch but there is nothing to worry about. We had lunch here on a Sunday and the wait was about 45 minutes. We were told to sign in and provide them our phone number so they could call us when ready. They do no let you wait inside due to it being small so you are told to either wait outside or in you car. Once ready, they called us and we were seated. We were a party of 8 so they sat us in a big table. The server came over a few minutes after and took our orders, we ordered: 6 agua de jamaica - DELICUOUS AND HYDRATING 1 coke 1 Dr pepper 1 Sope Plate - 3 thick corn patties stuffed with beans and shredded beef. Topped with tomato sauce, lettuce, and ranchero cheese. 2 Molcajetes de Mariscos - grilled shrimp, fried shrimp, tilapia, abulon, octopus, crab, grilled cactus, grilled onions, and queso fresco with corn tortillas 1 Molcajete A La Mexicana - steak, grilled chicken, homemade chorizo, queso fresco, grilled cactus, and grilled onions with flour tortillas 1 Menudo 2 Fajitas Supreme Plates - Steak, chicken, and shrimp sautéed with fresh bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms. Served on a sizzling skillet with rice beans, guacamole and sour cream. 2 Carne Asada Plates - Top sirloin steak served with grilled onions, French fries, salad, rice and beans. EVERYTHING was delicious. The food had so much flavor and it was all made fresh! The menudo was soooo good. It was served hot and had plenty of hominy and meat. The carne asada was nicely grilled and had no fatty pieces. It was easy to eat, thin, and had no chewy pieces. The sopes were loaded with all the good and they definitely did not skimp on the meat. Great stop. I was in the area to meet someone for lunch and we decided to check this place out. I'd been nearby in the past for coffee (same lot) so easy to find. The parking lot is fairly small, but at 11 on a Tuesday it wasn't too hard to find a spot. The front door faces McDowell where you walk into a small hostess station. We waited to good few minutes before being greeted, but were then taken right to a table with some yummy chips and salsa in no time. Our drink order was taken while we looked over the menu. Sodas are canned and they brought us cups of ice. There were so many good things to choose from but we settled on carnitas and chile verde both with their homemade corn tortillas which were phenomenal. I loved that they didn't skimp on how many like ALOT of other Mexican restaurants. All of our food was so good. My chile verde was full of flavor and I left so full. Service was great our entire visit and we even enjoyed their live music while we ate. Don't let the outside building fool you. It is quite old looking, bars on the window, but it's worth the stop. This by far the worst Mexican restaurant I have been to in the six years I have lived in the Phoenix area. I took my wife and daughter yesterday. I ordered a chicken enchiladas dinner my wife some folded shredded beef tacos and my daughter a simple bean and cheese burrito. I also ordered a carne asada burrito to go so I could have it for lunch today. 1. My daughter's burrito showed up 28 minutes after mine and my wife's food. And that was only after we complained to two people. 2. My chicken enchiladas had little chicken and had no cheese in them. They had peas inside, never heard of that. the sauce was just tomato sauce not enchilada sauce and rather than rolling them as it should have been done they were basically soggy fold tacos with tomato sauce. Horrible. 3. Say burrito was Grosse. Had peas in it too. Beans were very liquidy and had a reddish tint To them. 4. Wife said here tacos were barely ok. But tortillas were overcooked. 5. We saw the waiter very little. He was probably spending most of his time checking his makeup. Not cool. 6. Now I am supposed to let it go but now I heat up my burrito for lunch today. It's not raven carne asada. Is ground beef with those horrible beans. Not pico de gallo or salsa at nothing. Worst place ever. Never again. Do not go eat in this place. read more

I got taken here for my birthday lunch. The molcajetes were outstanding, the server was fine, they had a musician playing, and the birthday cheesecake and singing was nice. I've been to Barquita quite a few times now. It's a cute little hole the wall spot, always clean and decorated for each season.I have to say the food is always amazing, it comes out quick and hot. The quesadilla fritas are one of my favorite dishes. I have to talk about the best part and that is Teresa, shes been our server many times now and when we arrive we always ask for her. We tried the two most popular items and our expectations were exceeded. This was the best Mexican food I've had in a long time. We walked in and the restaurant was almost full of locals- to us this was a good sign that we were in the right place. The Birria was hot and fresh, falling off of the bone. So tender and flavorful. The Molcajete was piping hot with a good amount of spice. We got a mix of flour and corn tortillas- everything was fresh and made in house. We asked for two dozen tortillas to take home with us (24 tortillas came out to $9.00). I am just loving exploring the authentic Mexican food in downtown. Came here with two friends and had a cute Friday night sit-down dinner. The chips and salsa they brought out before we even ordered were pretty good, but not hot, and I wish it was. I got the birria, and I love how different it is from other birrias I've had. The goat was delicious and so flavorful. I swear that goat was killed that morning, it was so fresh. The portion was just right to leave me full, but enough to make you feel like you got your money's worth. Friends loved their meals, too. Come for an authentic, casual, quiet meal! read more

I was driving by and decided to try it randomly and I'm glad I did! My server was nice and seated me right away. I often rate places by the taste of their water and La Barquitas was really good! I ordered the enchilada suiza (pictured). It was fantastic portions and come with veggies, beans, rice, etc. They were also hosting a holiday party there in the main room so they do accommodate for that. Our first time was no failure in this whole in the wall. The staff was immediately attentive and brought delicious salsa con tortilla chips. The salsa was made fresh with chunks of tomatoe, onions. The chips were crispy totopo style. With that we ordered licuado and pina (pineapple) refresher. The pina was freshly made. We ordered huevos rancheros which were uniquely made out of the ordinary ingredients from other previous Mexican restaurants we visit. The Caldo de Res was amazing. The soup was perfectly warm and filled with all the vegetables. The meat was a little chewy which I prefer it to automatically fall off. But over all the Caldon was great and prices average for home cooked meal. We are definitely making this place our go to Caldo stop in Phoenix. This is such a great restaurant. Authentic food of the region that brings me back to my Moms home cooking. I've been coming here for over 10 years and have never had a bad meal. My favorites are the fajitas (you can get steak, chicken or shrimp or all together), the chile verde, and of course the strawberry liquados. It's always festive, you have traveling musicians that occasionally stop by and will perform if you're lucky enough to be there when they are and, the staff is always friendly. Great ambiance and music selection. Be prepared to wait outside if it's too packed, and remember, even though the building is a little rough and the area is also, you will not be disappointed if you know the flavors of Guadalajara. read more

The mole was savory and delish, the sopes' shells were soft and not soggy (chicken was my favorite), the enchiladas were fresh and the green sauce was flavorful. This is our favorite Mexican Food Restaurant in the entire valley. They have great, prompt service and the food is superior. It is authentic, they have a great variety and it is always fun and enjoyable to go there. The prices are reasonable. I especially like their enchiladas with green sauce.
