My husband and I both chose the 2 course option and everything was delicious, fresh and full of flavor. I had the mozzarella appetizer with the salmon entree partnered with sautéed zucchini. My husband had the appetizer for Indecisives, meaning a little bit of all the options, and he loved everything- especially the gazpacho. He also thoroughly enjoyed the Tomato Tonnato. I had a bite and it was truly amazing. My sons both chose the Avocado Caesar salads and they loved it. Their Aperol Spritz was very refreshing on a hot day. La Boîte aux Lettres, which translates to "the mailbox," is in such a charming location with a wonderful, helpful, and good-looking staff (bonus!). The small dining room is filled with books and closely clustered tables with an open-ish kitchen. I made a reservation but it didn't seem necessary for lunchtime, at least on this particular day. I absolutely love that they have magnets under the table to hold the silverware down! What a cool idea! We both opted for the "lunch formula" of an appetizer and main dish. We started with the "For the Undecided," a sampler of soup, salad, and pork pâté. The green pea soup was excellent, with a tiny dollop of crème fraîche to garnish and tiny fresh peas suspended within. The salad was also lovely, a combination of arugula, fresh mozzarella, and fresh and dried tomatoes all dressed with balsamic (it was supposed to also have shaved Parmesan but that seemed to be missing). The pâté was delightful, served with a small bit of caramelized onions and a cornichon. The fresh sliced baguette served on the side was perfect with this. We enjoyed our meal with a 1/4 bottle of Chardonnay from Burgundy. It was crisp and light, and nicely complimented our meal. My mom's pollack with eggplant caviar and sautéed veggies was a winning dish! It was perfectly cooked, melt-in-your-mouth tender! My croque madame was perfection, one of the best versions I've ever had. A single slice of bread with ham and gruyére, it wasn't too heavy, and featured an insanely crispy bread and a perfectly fried egg. Swoon! The fries and salad were good too, adding a fresh element to a heavy dish. I would absolutely hands down return here on any future trip to Paris! Try and stop me! read more

Back when I was in high school, one of my English teachers told me that the beautiful opening montage of the city in the movie Midnight in Paris would make me yearn for Paris. Rewatching the movie now, however, makes me wish I were back at this restaurant. I would eat here every day for the rest of my life if I could. It's a little off the beaten path, but that's all part of the experience, as you'll get to walk through some of Montmartre's most visually stunning cobblestone streets. La Boîte Aux Lettres is tucked away in more of a residential area, so you'll get to feel like a real Parisian (who doesn't get harassed by scammers around the Sacré-Cœur!). In fact, I think most of the other diners were locals. The restaurant's coziness is one of its greatest strengths. This comes across in the welcoming decor (from the dining area to the bathroom, you'll feel like you're visiting a close friend, who just so happens to have impeccable taste in interior design) and the service (our friendly server brought over a small chalkboard menu and explained each dish in fluent English). We had no complaints about our lunch, but the real highlight came at the end of the meal when our dessert sampler arrived. The flourless chocolate cake? Delicious. The pain perdu with caramel? Love their menu with rotations and sets and even a choice for "indecisive" essentially a little bit of each. Did that for the appetizers since I wanted to try it all. Not sure I liked the pate but everything else was great. Got the steak and the pepper sauce was perfection. The fried potatoes it came with was also amazing and I dipped it with the sauce. All great. Even partner liked the Caesar salad which was really good dressing. He liked the chicken that was in the salad but unsure if he liked it together. Fabulous! Exactly the experience we wanted on our final night in Paris... I love Montmartre but wanted to steer clear of the tourist traps on the main square (having been burned in several over the years!) so after watching the sky go dark over Paris from Sacre Coeur, we wandered away down Rue Lepic and stumbled on La Boite aux Lettres, which just happened to have one table for 4 available without a reservation, right in the window, while the rest of the restaurant was packed... serendipity! The two waitresses who helped us simply couldn't have been nicer. We were tired and hungry and they were so kind and patient, even helped all of us charge our phones which along with our energy, were similarly drained after another day of touring the sights. Menu is thankfully small (we were in no mood for lengthy complicated decisions!) and everything on it looked delicious. We tried 3 different main courses between us: the chicken, the dorade and the burgers. All absolutely perfect. My fish over vegetables tasted heavenly and was clearly made with love and pride. We shared the "indecisive" dessert (a selection of their 3 most popular offerings) and some fragrant white wine by the carafe, about which our waitress was super patient, letting us taste a couple options first. After a little wait I was able to get a table in this cozy restaurant. The staff here is amazing! Luca went through the entire menu and I went with his favorites and he did not steer me wrong. I had the beet salad to start followed by the Veal. The beef with foie gras looked amazing, but since I had steak last night for dinner and I wanted a light lunch, I went with the veal. Okay, I'm going to tell you about this place as long as you promise not to ruin it. Don't ruin it, people, this place is brilliant. The atmosphere is adorable and charming, the service is friendly (and hot), the food is fantastic (coffee, croissants...). We walked over from the Basilique Sacre Coeur and found it off a side street that wasn't swarmed with tourists. They let us take our time and for 18€ each, we had the most amazing brunch. A tartine of glorious baguette and butter, pain au chocolat, eggs royale and eggs benedict... we took our time, we had two coffees, I ate so much baguette and butter I refused to stop... Clearly, local French people love this place since most of the reviews here are from French speakers and it's not that discovered by tourists yet, it seems. Don't make me regret this. When meandering though Sacre Coeur I found this wonderful little place filled with people laughing enjoying the spoils of a life well lived. All I wanted was something sweet and a cappuccino. They write everything on blackboards in the restaurant. So he pulled up the dessert and wine board and chatted though the menu. I ordered the tiramisu and the oh sh#* I forget. I had dinner here on my last night in Paris and believe me, it made it so much harder to get on the plane back to the US the next morning. I found this restaurant via The Fork and made a reservation. Eating here was like eating at a friend's house. The dining room is intimate and cozy - the shelves are lined with books and jars of candy. The chalkboard on the wall details the wine list and menu. My waitress delivered a smaller chalkboard to the table and walked me through the entire menu. To start I had the terrine la campagne. Two big slabs with salad, pickles and onion relish all served on a slate. Wow - this was delicious! This was the best terrine I've ever had. For my main course, I selected the chili con carne. The presentation was beautiful. Rice in the center, with beef and kidney beans circling that. Red onion, cucumbers, tomatoes and sour cream completed the dish, along with a dusting of fresh cilantro. For dessert I chose "les indecis," a trio for the undecided. It was tiramisu with oreos, flourless chocolate cake and pain perdue with caramel. All were outstanding!
