Normally this place is great. It's been my go-to for Mexican food in the Astoria area but a group of us are there a few days ago and half of your food was nearly inedible. Both the red and the green enchilada sauces were so salty that they were akin to a mouthful of strait salt. I was very disappointed. One person at our table couldn't eat their food at all. I don't like leaving negative reviews, but the only way I can see this happening would be if the kitchen salt had been spilled over the steam table and gone directly into the open enchilada pans. Been coming here since 2015, been here over a dozen times and one of our favorites here in Astoria! This was one of the WORST meals we have had anywhere. Started off with guacamole/chips, a beer and a regular blended margarita NO SALT...Came with salt. Then we ordered the Tuesday special, which John told us was 3 carne asada (one crispy, one regular)tacos for $10 with rice and beans.. He never returned to the table, to the question him!!! So when we left and paid our bill the young lady said it was $60. Husband stuck his card in and I questioned her. I said we ordered the Taco special for $10 and she said they didn't have any $10 specials. I said John told us $10 for 3 and he went and checked. He said yes, $10 for 3. My husband order crispy and mine regular, both came crispy! I took mine home.... I explained to the lady that they needed talk to him about the prices. She then told there were no $10 specials that they were now $13. She said the order said 2 carne asada platters......we ordered tacos!!!! As I said previously John never returned to our table after the ordered was placed. She then told me that John was on break, when I saw him in the kitchen and basically said too bad... So I don't see HOW are bill got to $60????? Please tell me how the bill got to $60??? I am so disappointed with the meal, the service and the way they treated us. Outrageously expensive for Mexican food. I paid like 20 bucks for a plate of soggy nachos the one time we came. Their tamale was fantastic though. Menu was ok but honestly a bit small. But This please is just so outrageously overpriced it's sickening. I'm from San Diego... Mexican food isn't this expensive. I feel like they are ripping people off with the location. Went on a recommendation from some local folk- and they were spot on. This is a pretty traditional cantina with really strong margaritas, great chips & pico de gallo, and excellent food. Not much I can add here that other reviews haven't. I tried making my own birria a few times; mine is good, but theirs is LOTS better. Birria tacos for the win! I LOVE the 3 shrimp tacos - soft, home made corn tortillas, fresh veggies and lots of shrimp. Gimme that habanero sauce! mmmm. I dont drink but my wife ordered a margarita, and let the server talk her into a double. She said it was incredibly strong. Been here several times now, inside, outside on the large patio with wind blocking plexiglass (thank you!). Beautiful views of Youngs River and the bridges. Fabulous fun mexican decorations, great service, the BEST homemade mexican food you'll find on the coast, this is now a regular outing for us as its 5 minutes from our house. Excellent little hole in the wall. The best guacamole in the area, hands down. The service is always friendly, the food is authentically superb, and the view is lovely. My photos are not the best cause I kept forgetting to take them cause I was so excited to eat! I got three tacos, one shrimp (excellent!), one chicken (delish!), and one birria, altho it wasn't fried, and I thought birria tacos are fried (it was still sublime). My husband got two steak empanadas that came with beans, rice and salad. All of it was soooooo good. Don't miss out on this little gem of a place. I just moved to town and have been trying to find a good Mexican restaurant, and this one takes the cake! I got the 5 enchilada plate and it was amazing! I'm a big guy and like to eat, and this plate filled me up! The price is just right too! The waitress was very kind and not too in your face like at some places. Also, I wish the weather was nicer cause they have an amazing patio out back with epic views of Youngs Bay. This place is alright -- prices were very reasonable and the dishes were fine (I ordered the chilaquiles). It felt like an average run of the mill Mexican restaurant, however I'm docking a star for the service. After the waiter gave us our food, we were essentially ignored ... didn't even get the bill. We had empty glasses for throughout lunch and had to waive the waiter over to get refills. You do get a nice waterfront view and this place is on the quieter side of Astoria so it's a good place to with the family if you want to get away from the busier parts of the area and still want a view of the ocean. Let's start with what was great... there were 4 of us. We each ordered a different dish. I ordered carnitas plate. It was delicious. The other 3 ordered the burrito, the trio plate and the last had a taco plate. Everyone loved their food. The view is also amazing. We sat outside on the deck and watched the sunset. The service was ok. Three of us ordered margaritas. It was the worst margarita I ever had. I ordered a Cadillac and it was syrupy sweet. I didn't taste any tequila. My stepdaughter ordered the double mango. Again, syrupy sweet, no alcohol. The third one was double strawberry. It was very strong and less sweet. When we pulled in front I thought I saw eagles flying overhead so we opted to sit outside facing the ocean, but it was too breezy we came inside. I'm glad we reserved a table, people were waiting. We were visiting Astoria, OR and asked a local bartender what the best Mexican restaurant in town was. And she referred us La Cabana de Raya. It's not right in the heart of town, but only a 2-mile drive. Wow, the food was amazing, probably the best I've had. I had the Guisado de Cameron, that was made with peppers, onions, bacon, shrimp in a chipotle sauce, served with beans and rice, and homemade corn tortillas. They were so delicious and soft; I was like I was eating flour tortillas. Parking is a little challenging, so I suggest you go in off times. The outdoor seating looked really nice but was a little too cold that day for us to sit outside. The margaritas were generous and yummy. My husband had the same dish but with steak and he loved it. This place is the real deal. I visited for the first time this week travelling with a friend and it was so good we ate lunch here two days in a row and ordered to-go meals to take home. It's that good! First, they have an incredibly delicious peanut and red chili based mole that's to die for. I had it over a wet carnitas burrito one day, and the chicken mole the next. Second, the carnitas is legit. So flavorful and fatty enough not to be dry as at some places. They make their tortillas and their sopas from scratch, from scratch-made ground masa. The sopas and tacos are fantastic. Even the margaritas are made with what appears to be a pulpy, scratch made margarita mix. Servings are generous and prices are reasonable. It's right on the river and you can sit at a table on the lawn in the back overlooking Astoria. These folks are just getting back on their feet after covid closure, so give them your support. Several of the criticisms of this business have a lot of merit, although I don't known if they outweigh the quality of the food, which is the only reason to go and eat at restaurants anyway. The service is iffy. The young man who took our order seemed young, inexperienced, and easily flustered and his "supervisor" was equally busy and seemed disinclined to make up for his shortcomings. He was friendly and polite, but could use some confidence Main negative? I hate flour chips. They are chalky and gross and even if you make your own corn tortillas (they do, and it's worth it), you can still buy corn chips. You live in Oregon, Juanita's are made in Oregon, do the math! I don't really think chips are essential to a good Mexican meal (q.v.) but if you are going to offer them, then make sure that they are an asset The Guacamole was delicious but could have benefited from a little red onion. The beans were more authentic than average, as in they may have actually been made on the stove in the kitchen and not in a plant in Los Angeles. I don't like the rice and beans and cheese-covering that usually marks what we call "Mall Mexican" in my house and they lean a little that way (wet burritos, crema streaking over everything) but the quality is good so no flag on that play. I had carnitas, they were good and well prepared and I found them and the tortillas an excellent lunch. The-woman-who-lets-me-live-with-her (thanks Mike) had the pork guisado and let me tell you, it was a revelation! Sweet from the peppers and onions, spiced beautifully, rich and satisfying, it will be her dish of choice on our occasional excursions to the coast! The kid had fish tacos and they were above average but nothing worth a lot of extra words from dad. The kid's partner had the chicken mole on my recommendation and was very pleased. The peanut comes through a little more than in some places, and the chocolate takes a subordinate role and so the sauce is not that deep-brick color but rather a brighter reddish. It was nonetheless well-developed, and nuanced, spiced enough to make me smile and richly savory. Were it not for the service issues and the lousy chips (the salsa is very good) this would have received the extra star. It is not cheap and the pictures here are quite old, but we somehow keep being drawn to it each time we visit Astoria. read more

Absolutely top-notch Mexican food with tons of vegan options. We showed up for dinner on a Wed evening, having read that they can do most of their dishes vegan. So I ordered their Mole ($15), which comes with soyrizo, potatoes, and bell peppers in an absolutely delectably rich mole sauce, accompanied by rice and refried beans. My wife for the Basico ($15), which came with impeccably seasoned soyrizo and potatoes, a basic salad, rice and refried beans. We also got a refried bean dip and tortilla chips to start, which just turned out to be their refried beans served with tortillas -- I'd skip this next time. Each main dish came with some hot corn tortillas as well. The main dishes were amazing. The mole sauce was just so rich and complexly flavoured. Top-notch stuff. We're from Las Vegas where Mexican food is plentiful, so when we're visiting the NW it's typically all about the fresh seafood. But we kept driving by here and seeing all the cars, looked at the menu and online reviews, and decided we needed to try it. So glad we did. This is our third time there! They have added quesabirria tacos to the menu, which we were glad to see. Food and salsa on the spicy side. Chips are NOT complimentary, and we expected more for the price. The shrimp ceviche was more like a bad bad puréed shrimp salad. The fish tacos (cod) were way over cooked and had Mayo on them. The pork carnitas were bland and watery- like they had just come out of a crockpot. Would not go back. View is nice and was the service. read more

Full disclosure: We've lived in the American Southwest and traveled extensively in Mexico, and we've experienced some GREAT family-owned Mexican cantinas. Given that backdrop, La Cabana ranks very high in our experience. And what a blessing to have found it in Astoria! They have an authentic menu with extraordinary variety. Meals are generous and carefully prepared with savory flavors and complex sauces. This is NOT a cheese-drenched pseudo Mexican place where you get served in five minutes. We were greeted by cheerful, attentive servers who make you feel like you're eating at a friend's home. It's a place to relax, have a nice conversation, and make it a special occasion. The (seasonal) deck looking over Youngs Bay toward the setting sun is an added bonus! I highly recommend this place. Can't go wrong. read more

What? No more chips and salsa as a warm-up...Big mistake!! They were definitely 50% of the food attraction. I ordered Taquitos today, they were soggy greasy and not enough filling. Both my beans and rice were cold. I got overcharge for the Taquitos and didn't notice till I got home and saw my charges. They are suppossed to be $11, not $13.50 Shame on you guys. Really wanted to like this place. Happy hour on the deck with a view of the water. But there was just too much wrong with the experience. Service was non-existent. We were barely checked in on. The food was overpriced for what we got. None of the items came with beans or rice. A la carte. Fine, but don't charge the prices you're charging for 2/3 of a meal. My wife ordered enchiladas with grilled chicken. It was shredded chicken. Or shredded pork. We're still not sure. I ordered carnitas flautas. The flautas were wrapped in what seemed to be huge tortillas. There were two 'layers' of tortilla wrapped around the carnitas. Then, they were apparently fried, pulled out of the oil, and fried again. They were the hardest, crunchiest flautas I've ever had. I would have preferred frozen flautas from a grocery store. The margaritas were OK. Nothing special, but also not worth $10. The only thing that was really good was the ceviche with tilapia ($9). I would probably come back for the ceviche, but skip the margarita and grab a cerveza. By the way - those menus and prices are 4 years old. You've been warned. read more

Wow what to say about this diamond of a restaurant. Yes it is not in the main part of town but it is so worth the drive. It was a beautiful day but very windy so we were worried wouldn't be able to sit outside to enjoy the view. We were so pleasantly surprised to see the patio was protected from the wind. It is a very cool local vibe and the folks working there are friendly and authentic but it was really about the food. We started with the guacamole and it was fresh & delicious with crispy tortillas to dip. Lucky for us the the tamales were on the menu and they were big and tasted homemade just like out family holiday tamales. You could mix & match the pork, chicken or vegetarian tamales so we tried one chicken & one pork both were outstanding, served with lovely presentation. I had never had birria tacos so I got adventuresome and gave them a try. They were amazing and very different than anything I had ever had at any Mexican Restaurant. I could barely finish two but it is served with three. Lots of good service and lots of customers at two in the afternoon.
