Wow, possibly the worst restaurant we've experienced!! Hubby ordered Dos Equis on tap, got Modelo bottle instead. I ordered tacos Al carbon, got taco salad instead. Server took salad back and we figured my correct dish would be out quick, not so. We waited approx 15 mins for my food and the meat I ordered was NOT what was in my tacos. When boxing up my leftovers, there was a hair buried in my refried beans. Then to add insult to injury, still had the taco salad on our bill and nothing was comped for all the hassle. Nice atmosphere. Food was always sub par, but the people who run it are super effusive with my partner so I went there whenever he wanted to go to give it another try. Maybe it was an off night, maybe I ordered the wrong thing, but no. This many times dining there and I'm finally over it. The mole is not a real mole negro. It is WAY too sweet. The carne asada burrito was dry and lacked flavor. The fish tacos had too much of a "fishy" flavor and the tortilla couldn't hold it together. Another miss. My husband and I came here on our first night in Astoria since it was the closest to where we were staying. I just looked at the rating and didn't read any reviews since we were tired and hungry. Big mistake. It's dark in there, but whatever. We ordered the iced tea which was very strong and tasted a bit off, but my husband didn't think it was off so I didn't think much of it. Tl;Dr my husband got a horrible bout of food poisoning after eating here -- he got the beef enchiladas. I am a vegetarian so was spared. Poor thing did not leave the bathroom for 6 hours and got no sleep. Absolutely NOT fun. They were cleaning the tables and it smelled like cleaning solution. My husband wanted to leave because his guy told him something was wrong. I wanted to stay, with the impression that if they're so on top of cleanliness outside, they must be diligent in the kitchen. Another mistake. Ordered cheese nachos with jalapeños which were fine. I am a vegetarian and ordered the vegetarian fajitas with corn tortillas. My husband ordered the beef enchiladas. The fajitas were good. My husband thought the enchiladas were "fine" but he's spoiled when it comes to tex-mex. All in all I would've given it a 3.5/5 for being alright food. Until, we walked back to our place and... He had to run to the bathroom. He was there for a long time. He came out, and then ran back in. Let's just say he was firing from both ends. When he thought it was over, he'd get in the shower only to have to hop right out again. He was in the bathroom for 6 straight hours overnight. Our first day in the city was ruined as he was so tired and still feeling sick until evening. I ran to get Imodium and Pepto but that didn't help until the worst was over. We're spending some time in Astoria and felt like having Mexican food so we came here. The overall atmosphere of the restaurant is ok. The food is mediocre at best. The complimentary salsa had way too much tomatoes and super bland. I ordered the chile Colorado and specifically asked for no beans but I got beans anyway. I also asked for the meat to be spicy and what I got was very bland. The flour tortillas were nice and hot and was very good. I ordered a side of pico de gallo and again not good. It was all tomato and onions with no flavor and you can tell the tomatoes were on their last legs because it tasted rancid. The guacamole was bland and full of tomatoes. I felt like this restaurant was somehow making their food bland to cater to the regular clientele which is sad. I also noticed when my food came out the plate was super hot but the food was room temperature. We ordered some dessert to go and the deep fried ice cream was very delicious. My kids ate it up and it was the highlight of dinner. The service was very good overall. The food could really use some work. read more

Came in on a Tuesday night, so the place was nice and quiet. The lounge can get a little warm, as it is next to the kitchen, but the staff was more than happy to open the door for ventilation. I'm not sure why it differs so much from the Kelso, WA location, they get five stars on EVERY category, you get two.. Waiter was MIA several times, I had informed him that we had just ran ten miles hoping that he would leave us a water pitcher, umm.. NO! He filled our water once. He also got both of our orders completely wrong!! Not a single dish came out the way we ordered them. I didn't complain, just ate what I ordered, I'm not that picky.. but the food we did get was bland and tasted of NOTHING.. The beans that we get before the meal in Kelso are much better! They aren't just re-heated beans from a can. They are slow cooked with jalopenos and beef, um.. YUM! So alas, I wont be returning. read more

My husband and I love Mexican food and were looking forward to eating here on our annual trip to Astoria. I am disabled and have a service dog - well trained, vest identified. When we walked into the restaurant, it was obvious that the host wasn't happy about the dog, even though he recognized it's a service dog after I told him. He led us past several empty booths and seated us right next to the kitchen, despite plenty of empty tables elsewhere. It was not busy (Sunday night). Then we were pretty much ignored. It was about 500 degrees next to the kitchen, so we were very uncomfortable. The food was actually good - came out hot and fresh. Then it took 15 minutes to get our check after we asked for it. Such a disappointment. Feels horrible to be discriminated against as a disabled person. My disability is largely invisible, but that doesn't mean I should be treated like I'm invisible. read more

I have been here a few times with different people. Their food is very good. I had to start using Yelp again - just to say: This is great food!! And good service. Weirdly, every time we go in it is mostly empty (this is partially why I wanted to leave a review- letting people know how good their food is). I can't understand why they aren't busy (every time we go in we are practically the only customers). I don't like to say negative things about other competitors, but the El Tapatio mexican food restaurant was not as good. I'd choose Astoria Plaza Jalisco in a heartbeat over Tapatio. Well, hell.... we gave this place another few tries and have been let down to the point of no return. Food quality and flavour was on a slow but steady decline. Food was dry and seemed like it had been sitting out too long prior to being served. Service was always inattentive with you as the customer having to ask for water / drink / chip/ salsa refills even after they glanced at the table seeing empty glasses. Orders were not being filled properly as well. Just very uninspired. Troubling when you see the owner (manager??) sitting off to the side with is feet up on the phone and the staff are just going through the motions. What message does that give? Sorry, we are troubling you and keeping you open. I predict that at this rate, this location of Plaza Jalisco will soon be yet another failed restaurant in Astoria. I need to buy stock in "FOR LEASE" signs, as this sad, steady decline in customer service and local business owner apathy here on the coast is spreading rapidly. So ironic that Astoria keeps flogging the dying horse wondering why their downtown isn't vital..... look around you folks..... lazy staff, piss poor customer service, rising prices, declining product quality, inept management, lack of advertising, quirky hours of operation, banking on the tourist trade while ignoring local support, etc. It doesn't take an MIT grad to figure this out folks!! The horses that adorn Plaza Jalisco need to be put out to pasture.... It is insulting to the consumer that they have hung their "Celebrating 10 Years in Business" banner on the roof-line just recently. Granted it is a free advertising gig for Pepsi that I am sure the restaurant didn't pay a dime for, but it smacks of a quasi-false advertising in my book. I was very disappointed. We were not really show to a table. They waiter gave a kind of head nod to an empty both from across the room. Then just dropped menus on the table as he walked passed the table. It took about 5 minutes to just get the complimentary chips, salsa and bean dip. The salsa resembled a chunky tomato soup, definitely straight out of a can with zero flavor. The bean dip made have been made in house as it had burnt beans in the bowl. The waiter finally showed back up to attemt to take our order. I do say attempt, because he had to come back twice more to remind himself of what we ordered and to asked question he didn't the first time. Our drink orders were taking an exhuberant amount of time to arrive, iced tea and water. As we continued waiting now for our food, tables that had arrived after us started getting their food. Their waiter finally started helping and found our food in the back. The poor service had already put a damper on my appetite. And the food only worsened the experience. The beef burrito and chicken enchilada had the exact same red sauce with scant amounts of what may have been chedder cheese as it had been left in a warmer for too long. I had to ask the other waiter, almost certain our waiter had been abducted or quit, if he could locate a tamale side we had ordered. I am not sure what he returned with could have been considered a tamale. There were four chunks of masa, one of which had a clump of shredded pork (?). It was hard to tell as the whole thing had been drowned in the mysterious red sauce and burnt cheese concotion. read more

I don't know what happened here. It's as though they don't have a full time chef working there anymore. The food doesn't taste freshly prepared. I ordered a combination with a beef burrito and a tamale. The burrito consisted of a soggy flour tortilla stuffed with an oil soaked ground beef in a sauce and that wasn't seasoned. The waiter told me that there are many kinds of burrito's and this one had no re-fried beans, or salsa, or sour cream. Unbelievable! The tamale was a dense, poorly made affair with a lump of shredded beef in the middle. The rice wasn't seasoned properly and the re-fried beans were just thrown on the plate. The whole of the top of the dish was covered in cheese and it was clear the dish had been microwaved briefly to melt the cheese. I explained all this to the waiter who offered go take it all back and make a new plate. I got the impression he was the one who made that mess and just didn't know what he was doing. He returned with another plate. It was clear he was trying to be helpful but it wasn't much better than the first attempt. I have been eating here for years and I'm very familiar with how they used to prepare food. What a shame. read more
