We had a wonderful family lunch at El Tapatio and will definitely be back! I ordered the tostada, and it was absolutely delicious. I especially loved the fresh radishes and cucumber garnish, a refreshing touch. My son ordered the Colorado Burrito with shredded beef, his girlfriend had the Super Burrito, and my granddaughter enjoyed a taco with the two-enchilada combination. Everything looked fantastic. The menu is huge, with so many tempting choices that it was hard to decide. I originally planned on ordering the chile relleno but decided to try something different this time, and I'm glad I did. The complimentary chips came with two different salsas, and both were excellent. One salsa had mushrooms, onions, and what I believe were tomatillos, giving it a unique flavor that was absolutely delicious. It was a nice change from the typical restaurant salsa. One thing worth mentioning is the portion sizes. The burritos are enormous and could easily be shared between two people while still leaving everyone satisfied. We were seated in a booth overlooking the Columbia River, which made for a beautiful setting and added to the experience. A few minor drawbacks: Because it was a warm day, the doors were left open, and there were quite a few flies near the entrance and inside the restaurant. None bothered us where we were seated, but it was noticeable when entering. Parking can also be a little tight, especially if you drive a larger vehicle. There is one handicap parking space near the entrance. Families with young children should also be aware that the stairs to the lower level are directly in front of the entrance without a gate or barrier, so it's something to keep an eye on. Overall, the excellent food, generous portions, friendly atmosphere, and beautiful river view far outweighed those small concerns. We're already looking forward to our next visit. read more

In my opinion the best Mexican Restaurant on the north coast. Always good food and excellent staff. I'll eat here again.

My husband and I suddenly became sick all night after dining at the restaurant. We had 2 cocktails along with it. I had the chile relleno with an enchilada, and my husband had a tostada. It seems it is a family-owned restaurant, and we like to support locals, but if the restaurant serves food that isn't fresh, it becomes a problem. Luckily after 2 days we feel a bit better. We don't recommend the restaurant at all!! read more

Wow, just wow. Moved from LA to Portland and have been desperate for authentic Mexican food. No luck in Portland, but what do you know, amazing Mexican does exist, it's just in Astoria! Service was outstanding, fast and super friendly. Large drinks that weren't just filler. Asada tacos were excellent, my friend got the asada burrito and was also in heaven. Plus free chips and salsa? Excellent service and great tasting food. The two salsas are unique and have complex tastes, not just hot spice. Seafood chili rellanó was a hit. As was the chicken mole enchilada plate. The free salsa and chips are always warm and delicious (some days they also give free ceviche ). Very welcoming, friendly environment. This restaurant was recommended to me and I was skeptical. I have been very lucky to have enjoyed amazing Mexican food in my lifetime. I can say that I was pleasantly surprised. The food was very good and everything tasted fresh. I dined in the main restaurant area, so I can't speak for the Cantina. The restaurant was busy but not jam packed. My margarita (Cadillac) was ordered and served within minutes and it was goooooood. We've been coming here for years and it's been consistently good Mexican American style food no matter what we order, but there's some menu items that are excellent or a rare value. For example if I was staying at a nearby hotel and I wanted breakfast, I would order the #17 Enchiladas Sunrise (two cheese and onion enchiladas covered in green chilies with two over easy eggs on top) over any item on the menu at Pig and Pancake. The chile relleno and the chorizo con huevos are superb, and so are the shredded beef and picadillo (sweet spiced ground beef). If it was me, I'd order either the Sunrise or the double relleno as combos, and then get 3-5 other items ala carte, like a shredded beef chimichanga, soft or hard taco (huge), soup, an appetizer, or a side of fresh sliced avocado. They even have a spiced apple chimichanga if you want dessert. $15 bucks per person here will have you eating like a king, everywhere else (except Riverwalk) you'll be eating like an inmate or you'll be pretending that you like it because it cost so much. I'm just trying to look out for you. I live here, trust me. read more
