Had lunch here with some friends and ended up with a story we'll be laughing about for a long time There was a bottle of hot sauce on the table called "357 Magnum" (about 1 MILLION Scoville ). We thought it was regular hot sauce... so naturally, I absolutely drenched my burrito in it. Big mistake. HUGE. This is to be asked for by customers lol... and it was left out by mistake... One bite in and it felt like I got maced straight to the soul Tears pouring, coughing, face on fire--we couldn't even eat our food because it was that insanely hot. Honestly, it was next-level pain... but also kind of hilarious once we survived it Here's the part that really matters: the owner handled it like a pro. He apologized sincerely, took full responsibility, and didn't even charge us for the meals. That kind of customer service is rare and says a lot about the people who run this place. Owner is amazing and thoughtful... really great people there Accidents happen--but great businesses make it right, and they absolutely did. Awesome food, great atmosphere, cold beer , and genuinely good people. We'll definitely be back (just... maybe staying away from the 357 Magnum next time ). I have added this restaurant to me "never again" list. I ordered a Hendricks gin and tonic with lime to start. It came in a pint-sized beer glass with ordinary straw. No lime. Flat tonic. Terrible. The enchiladas were OK. The coffee was the color of tar. When I opened the tiny container of half-and-half, the contents were solid and plopped into the coffee. I fished out the solid mass with my spoon and called over the waiter. No apology. I think he then brought back the same coffee, new mini moo-cows. Really terrible dining experience. Saturday evening and this restaurant was empty! They do have a parking lot but since it was not busy plenty of spots. The place is a little outdated, but it's very colorful and it adds to the ambiance of being transported to another place. Staff was attentive and we got to choose where we wanted to sit. They had a paint night type of event that was ending when we got there and as we kept eating more and more people slowly started coming in. Portion sizes are huge....we couldn't finish our food. We took it back to our Airbnb and we repurposed and used the leftover food into new dishes for breakfast the next day. Was this the best Mexican food ever.... well no, but it wasn't horrible. I got the Chile Verde Burrito and it was good. I think that the dishes were basic and there was nothing that took it over the top. Nothing special, no different seasoning. Even though we didn't finish the food, we ordered dessert and shared. The flan.....OMG! Yes, yes, yes! I would go back for the flan. It's been a long while since I've been here. In the past it was always delicious and busy, but I believe it's been 5yr+ since my last visit I think that era of peak goodness has passed...5-6pm and it was fairly empty. We had a BOGO Free dinner coupon so we decided to give them a try again. I had the tamale and relleno combo. The tamale, rice and beans were very good. However that relleno was BAD. It tasted like mold. I ordered another tamale ala carte ATI make up for it. My partner had the chicken suizas and I thought they were good. He thought the chicken tasted like it was precooked and reheated like at another local chain (TK) so he was a little disappointed. I thought it was tasty... I am visiting Anchorage and our friend suggested La Cabana. It's kind of an older building with outdated everything. My food was pretty good. Everybody seemed to like the food. But the margaritas were WAY over priced and all watered down. There were 4 of us, and we all thought margaritas were watered down. They told us that they always use the same recipe and same ratio of mix to alcohol, etc. But there was no way they were flavorful and did not taste, tart, sour, sweet or of alcohol. It tasted like watered down lime water. One of the guys we were with said they were there a couple of weeks ago and they were not watered down. After requesting they give us another round of the margaritas, I asked them to cut us a discount because the first ones were so watered down. They offered to give us the "cadillac" version, which the waiter told me was just the regular margarita plus one shot. So we ordersed another round. Turns out that the drinks in the second round were SO strong, I couldn't drink them. This was almost pure alcohol. So it was NOT just their normal classic margarita with one added shot. SO THEY LIED ABOUT THAT. Basically, I couldn't drink mine. I poured most of it into my friend's drink. But she ended up getting sick and falling down because she drank hers and most of mine. Long story short, we paid $100 for two rounds of margaritas that were terrible! We will never go back. read more

Wow this place is bad. I really do mean that. If you're hungry for Mexican food, this is not the to go, This is going to be the worst restaurant I've been to in Alaska. I'm glad that there was zero wait for a table but now I understand very well why the restaurant was empty. The service is poor. The kitchen is pretty loud and oblivious to other Spanish speakers listening. The server not once asked how the food is and refilled only one drink. The food tastes outright ugly. The tamal felt canned, didn't come in a husk and was smothered in an enchilada sort of gravy. The Chile relleno was maybe some kind of microwave imitation? That was definitely not an egg batter coating and overall was not palatable. Tortillas we grocery store grade and bland. This whole dinner was a disappointment. It's been a few years since we've been able to visit La Cabana. The space seems the same but noticeably less cluttered. A few of their menus are online only. Our male server was refreshing and attentive. Cadillac margaritas were strong. The food came out fast, hot, and as expected. This was an interesting meal. La Cabana was so dead when we arrived I didn't think they were open. We had a larger group and they were quick to seat us. The menu has tons of options. The food was mediocre at best. The spinach queso dip was a runny mess. The spinach flavor killed the cheese, and the cheese was so thin it flowed off of the chip. What a mess. The Chile Rellenos were also a soggy mess. It was hard to tell where it ended and the enchilada started. The flavors all blurred together, the retried beans tasted the same as the rice. This is still my favorite place for Mexican. I went crazy this last trip and had a shredded beef chimichanga, and it was great! I recently tried chimichanga's at a number of restaurants around town, and have decided that La Cabana makes the best. Not only is it the best, but wow were they fast making it! It's nice knowing I can pop in for a chimichanga with only a half-hour lunch. And as always, the restaurant was clean and everyone was friendly. There were nice decorations out for Christmas that I thought was a nice touch, too. Usually I eat low carb, and I don't know if it's intentional but the Fajita Salad's seem to be low carb; they don't interfere with ketosis for me. The fajita salad's are a great, quick to-go item for busy days, and way better than a salad that can be found at a grocery store. La Cabana remains one of my favorites, as it has for years. read more

We came here on a Wednesday night because every other restaurant had a long wait time. We were seated immediately and it took over 15mins for the waiter to just greet us. We stopped another person, who we assumed was another waiter, if we could order. She pointed to another gentlemen and said he was the waiter. She didn't tell him we were waiting or anything. We finally ordered and the food came out in 10 mins. The rice was dry and meat undercooked. I was very disappointed with this restaurant and will not be returning or recommending to anyone. I wasn't planning on having Mexican food in Alaska since I've lived my whole life in Southern California. In any case, I ended up at La Cabana for appetizers and a Margarita (like you do). The Margarita: Pretty standard fare at first, but hits with a wallop in the end. One feels good, two might leave you wobbly. Flavor was not overly sweet, pour was generous. Appetizer platter: Also pretty standard. It was good, not overcooked and flavors were all okay. Service was great and they were pretty busy. For some reason it looks kind of quiet on the outside - but if you've got a hankering for some enchiladas, it is a good choice. read more

Unbelievably, this was my first time back to La Cabana since my first arrival to Anchorage with my parents as a kid back in 1983 and long overdue. La Cabana is located in the older section of downtown on the east side at the corner of 4th and Cordova just down the road from the Sheraton Hotel. The dining area is spacious with plenty of tables and booths as well as a walled outdoor patio for dining outside. Mexican-style paintings and artwork adorn the walls on the inside with cozy booths that have firm seats and don't sag like other restaurants where you look like a child with your face up close to the surface of the table. The restaurant staff are very friendly who quickly seated us upon arrival and gave us a few minutes to look over the menu. We took a few minutes to look over the menu which had a wide variety of lunch and dinner items. I decided to go with the two item lunch plate of Beef and Cheese Enchiladas with refried beans and rice while my friend ordered a plate with a Beef Taco and Chile Relleno with the same two sides. The orders came in just a few short minutes and a brief warning from the waitress that the plates were hot to the touch. The enchiladas were delicious with plenty of melted cheese on the inside topped with their House sauce. Refried beans were average on taste but the rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned without any hardness to it. My friend enjoyed hers just as well with the free chips and salsa making it enough for a filling meal. There are definitely some stand-out items on the menu worth checking out in future visits. Some of the more notable ones include the Halibut Veracruz (grilled halibut cubes sautéed with garlic butter, mushrooms, bell peppers, spices, and a little bit of wine), the Tijuana Tacos (grilled tacos filled with beans, cheese, and beef....these are hard-shelled tacos that are grilled and sealed after cooking to prevent any ingredients from spilling out, a very smart method), Steak a la Mexicana (grilled top sirloin cooked in green peppers, onions, and spices), Flautas (flour tortillas filled with shredded beef and deep-fried topped with guacamole and sour cream...a personal favorite), and the Camerones Rancheros (jumbo shrimp cooked in garlic butter, green peppers, and onions). I will definitely be coming back sooner than another 35 years. read more

After years of eating here, our most recent meal was atrocious. Everything we would ask for, we would get the opposite. My food had expired ingredients and the prices were steep. I've got to admit this wasn't my first choice. I was in Anchorage for work and wanted some Alaskan seafood. Unfortunately the place I went to first was closed due to COVID. Since I was walking and it was cold, I stopped at the first open place on my way back to the hotel. That happened to be La Cabana. Worked out well for me. The chips and salsa were great and the beer was ice cold. I ordered the seafood enchiladas (since I was looking for seafood) and they were good as well. The wait staff was excellent. Set up a margarita date with a girlfriend and had a great time. Daniel was the server, bartender & manager and treated us so great! The food is not the best Mexican food ever, but up to my Latina heart standards. Their habanero salsa hit the spot on top of my enchiladas and my friend says they have good Chile rellenos which is what she ordered. We were happy with our margaritas (house made mix) which were delivered so quickly everytime we ordered a different one. Daniel was great and handled the restricted covid 19 regulations great for being the only one running the place. He dealt with difficult customers in a professional manner. (If you're going to rush your food being made and yell at workers while they are sitting other guests during a VISIBLE rush and demand your change be given to you that very instant, stay the f*ck home and cook for your damn grumpy self ! ) Anyway, can't wait to go back! I love La Cabana! It's been one of my favorite places for as long as I can even remember! Everything is delicious, fresh, and super yummy. The spinach con queso, chilli Reno, tostada, carne asada are amazing- really everything is. The portions are great, atmosphere is nostalgic, fun, and laid back. Great place for a date, family meal, and totally going just by yourself. It's just so lively too! The customer service though? Absolutely 100% amazing. The bartender who I'm pretty certain is the manager will always recognize you, as he greets everyone as well. Everyone is so friendly and nice treating you like family. They def have one of the best Cadillac margaritas in town- top notch! Downtown, kinda out of the way, and perfect. I always stop in even just to grab some salsa on the way home randomly OFTEN. Yelpers, HOW COULD YOU?!? How could you lead me a-stray? I'm crushed! Well past the lunch hour hunger descended and money was tight. Count on Freddy's for some good coupons on the back of a receipt. Coupla mexican restaurants had deals on the receipt and we decided to try La Cabana, since it was well receieved on Yelp. Parking no problem, which is a bonus downtown. Points for that, Cute interior, but seating is TIGHT. A heavy person would be VERY uncomfortable and embarassed here. Menu has lots of choices. Our coupon was buy one entree get one free from items numbered 5 through 27. One look at the menu reveals, the coupon isn't a deal... it just makes it so that you end up paying what you should. If you go in without a coupon, you're SERIOUSLY getting ripped off. And the $9 margarita was unremarkable. Furthermore, the assembly line, inauthentic food is seriously uninspired. I grew up in a heavily Mexican neighborhood and La Cabana is pumping out GARBAGE that doesn't come close to resembling real Mexican food. All the food is pre-prepared and warmed up on oven-proof plates and then drowned in sauce (to hide the fact its crunchy from air exposure) and then garnished. (From my table, I WATCHED them do this to verify what my taste buds already told me.) There's a few small garnishes La Cabana could add to bump up their palatability: invest in limes, Cotija cheese, cilantro and chili peppers.
