There's lots of open parking, and this Food Truck is situated next to a coffee stand, in case you need a caffeine fix afterwards. I've been curious about Tacos Al Pastor for some time, but wasn't sure if I'd like them. I have no issues with cilantro, i love the stuff. But i do prefer a crispy taco shell. My main fear, is that there will be fat, or gristle on any meat i get. I have seen how the meat for Al Pastor is cooked, so i have reservations. See, i can ONLY eat fat on meat, if it has a seared crispy outside, and is fully rendered and melted inside. So i avoid Carne Asada, and usually only go for ground beef fillings. When i make carnitas at home, i remove every scrap of fat, that's how bad i am. I don't blame restaurants, i know I'm the issue here. Anyway, i ordered 2 tacos Al Pastor with pork, he ordered the burrito with beef. The way that I've always seen Tacos Al Pastor, is with two tortillas, and the filling on top. These only had 1. There was lots of meat, some lime, diced onion, and plenty of cilantro. I also got sour cream to put on. Ok the meat was seasoned quite well, and flavoursome, but i DID encounter squishy fat, and when i do, i spit it out. I really cannot choke it down. I also encountered some of the bouncy, chewy type of gristle. I wouldn't get these again. It's just me - other people don't seem to have these issues with fat that I do, and i get it. It's a textural thing. So don't take my word for it, if you don't mind some fat on your meat - i know that where the flavour lies. He enjoyed his burrito, and ate all of it. He also got a Pina Colada Crash, which i had a sip of, but i also hate icy, and cold things. The flavour was nice, but i got a freeze headache instantly. The total for the food and drinks (i got a can of Pepsi) was $30 even. To be honest, I've seen bigger burritos, and 2 small tacos did not fill me whatsoever. I'm already hungry, an hour and a half later. It's a new business, and I am not going to remove stars, because new businesses need support to help them flourish. I definitely would go back, as there's several dishes on the menu that I'd like to try, and the pork was nicely cooked and seasoned well. And it's a decent menu - quite extensive for a Food Truck.

The food was great! I do like the pastor better than the asada though. The asada could use some more flavors in my opinion But it is not bad.

Anchorage has a flourishing street food scene and this is a great addition to the expanding culinary landscape. In fact, some of the best meals I've eaten in this town were off the fender of my jeep! I always rate a Mexican restaurant based on their street tacos. While it's one of the most simple dishes, consisting of a tortilla, meat, cilantro and onions, it tells you everything you need to know. There's nothing to hide behind, if the meat isn't seasoned well than you'll know how well they cook. They've only been open 4 days but I can say with certainty this is one of the best al pastor tacos in the State, I definitely recommend checking them out! It's still early so I only gave them 4 stars because of little stuff. For example, they're cash only at the moment but they're working on it. I think my rating will quickly change to a 5 once they get up and running.

The dining area has high ceilings surrounded by glass windows. This is great during sunny days, but during winter, when daylight is short, it can be blinding from the west side when the sun goes down. The glare was especially strong when ordering at the counter and even the cooks in the kitchen had a difficult time as the grills face the dining area with the sun right in their faces. The employees were friendly and extremely busy as they were helping customers in the dining area as well as a private party next door. Rather than a physical copy of the menu, there are screens above the front counter displaying the menu selections to place your order. I ordered the Weekend Special of Birria Tacos and Consomme (hand-pressed fried corn tortillas with brisket and back rib meat, cilantro, and onions accompanied with a cup of bone marrow consomme for dipping) and a friend of mine who came along ordered the Carnitas Taco Special at $7.50/crispy or soft taco. We found a table close to the front door and fortunately seats facing away from the afternoon glare. All the tables are long bar-style tables with stools which takes up a lot of space when you're navigating to the counter to place an order. Dining tables for a party of 2-4 would be more ideal in a setting like this. The 15 minute wait was reasonable, given how busy the kitchen was with diners and takeout orders being worked on. The food was delicious. The Birria Tacos were juicy and tender with melted cheese and the Consomme added additional flavor akin to au jus for a French Dip sandwich. My friend enjoyed the Carnitas Tacos. What made this order unique was that the Carnitas included what looked like bacon bits and pork belly in the tacos. That looked amazing. I will have to try that out on the next visit. Some of the standout selections include the Street Corn (topped with mayo, Cotija cheese, tortilla strips and salsa Macha), Pork Belly Tacos (roasted garlic, jalapeno aioli, shaved cabbage, cilantro, and salsa), 1lb. Burritos with choice of meat on a 13-inch(!!!) flour tortilla with cilantro, onions, and two sides of salsa...( We all know how big a 10-in pizza from Moose's Tooth looks like, so you can imagine how big this burrito is at 13-in AND you have an option for extra meat!), and the Chocoflan (chocolate cake topped with flan, whipped cream, and a cherry). It should be noted that this establishment originated in Tijuana and got the inspiration for their recipes working with well-known Mexican chefs throughout the country.

I wasn't prepared for the ordering process. It was kind of a mess. Let me explain: I walked in and the first table full of people was REALLY close to the door. Threw me off. I worked my way around them. Then I walked past the kitchen/cooking area toward the thing that made the most sense. The bar area. There was a register, a counter, and a person...looking at me. But no. He told me to order at the other counter. So I walked over and grabbed the paper menu lying on the counter. But it wasn't a menu, it was their produce order from Charlie's produce. So I stood there awkwardly until someone asked to take my order and I asked for the menu, which was above me on a tv screen. And that's the last bad thing. Now I'll know. (And so do you) Amazing food. Cold beer. You'll love it.

I tried the chicken (x2) tacos and the nopal (cactus). The chicken was really good. Tender, juicy and flavorful with the salsas. The cactus was decent, but i felt could use more spices/seasoning. Definitely like the hot sauce more than the mild. The hot tasted like mild and i thought the mild salsa was sort of like a bland V8. Staff was super friendly and the restaurant was clean. I would describe the interior as "spartan" and not really cosy. It didn't have that eclectic colourful look common to many Mexican restaurants, and nor were they playing the Mexican kind of music either. Tables and chairs were plain wood. Their large parking lot was full, however when we got inside, only one other table was occupied, so I'm not sure who was using their parking lot, but it wasn't diners. It was brightly lit though, and we got a table near the window so I could look outside. Considering only two tables were occupied, it took an inordinately long time for someone to come and take our order. I ordered the Southwest Tacos (crispy) and asked for ground beef, these were $5, I wasn't really sure how many would be served, and assumed possibly two? I also order the Parmesan cilantro fries to be my side. Husband got the Serrano's Burrito with carnitas, this came with rice and beans. We also ordered chips and salsa which was served immediately. There were lots of chips, 3 salsas and pico de gallo. The food came out very quickly, and our server was very nice. I got 1 taco (had I known I was only getting 1, I'd have paid extra to get 2) Ok, the positive - the fries were plentiful, and nice and crispy, but I was disappointed that the Parmesan was the kind out of a jar, that you shake on. I had built myself up to melted grated Parmesan, and I didn't find much cilantro either, and I love cilantro. Fortunately there was plenty in the salsa, and so I just dipped my fries in that. My taco was disappointing. The ground beef was bland, lacked seasonings, and the taco was just not very filled with things. He loved his Burrito, pronounced it delicious. I tried his rice and beans. The rice was decent, but the beans were too smooth and homogenous for my taste - I like them to have some lumpy bits of bean in. Another plus - they were playing really good music. Totally my taste (but not my husbands) as I like more modern music. Current tunes, stuff I'd have on my playlist in my car, to torture my husband with, so i liked that. Good. Service, after initially waiting a while, and food came out fast after we ordered + decent music. Food could be improved though.

I usually wouldn't eat Mexican food in Alaska those two don't really go together in my brain being from California but I wanted to give it a try anyway lol I ordered the Cilantro Shrimp Molcajete and some chips and salsa on the side. First I will say I don't see why certain restaurants charge for chips and salsa it should be free in my opinion. The salsa lacked flavor and was more sweet than anything. (I asked for the spiciest salsa they have) and the order was $8.. I get it for the size I was surprised but that salsa wasn't good. Moving on to the main dish tho we have the Molcajete which was really good in my opinion. It came out SIZZLING! and the size of it wasn't what I was expecting. So if you're hungry I would def get one of those entrees ! The flavor of the fajita mix was good and the amount of shrimp you get was super filling. That dish was about $38 with the shrimp. The bartender was nice and asked me if I was doing okay a few times and also made sure my water was filled which was great he seemed really knowledgeable of all the good food recommendations and was pretty quick with service so employees were cool ! All in all I enjoyed my early dinner in a nice place that played good Latin music and I liked that it's walking distance from my hotel. I would eat here again one day and try some of their tacos next because I hear they are pretty good. I would say they need to just make the chips free because the are NOT worth $8 lol like at all but other then that decent place.

The decor works really well, but I found the branding a bit confusing. The menu leans heavily on Mexican flavors, but the restaurant doesn't really call itself a Mexican place, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. On my first visit, I had the duck confit tacos with an Eddie's Tropical drink. The tacos were amazing, tender and full of flavor, and the drink was perfectly balanced. On my second visit, I got the rockfish tacos. They were tasty but way too spicy for me, which took away from the flavor. We also tried guacamole and queso fundido on both visits. The guac was solid, nothing fancy but good. The queso fundido is super cheesy and greasy, and once it cools down, it's tricky to eat. I've learned my lesson there. Service was mixed. The first visit, our server was okay. The second time, the server was excellent, very friendly and attentive. Both visits we had reservations and were seated right away, even during tourist season, which was a nice surprise. Overall, Tequila 61 is a beautiful spot with some standout dishes. The duck confit tacos are a must-try. Some dishes could use a little work, but the atmosphere, drinks, and high-end feel make it worth a visit. Just watch out for the spice and maybe share the queso fundido with a few friends.
