Oscar's is absolutely the best. Been coming here for years and hadn't realized that I'd not left a review. But it has been a while since we've been, and decided to go the other day as it's sunny, and husband had the Triumph TR4 out, with roof down. So, we get there, and i get the #3 Lunch Plate Combo, he gets some kind of a Burrito. The 2 guys behind the counter are Oscar's sons and they're fast, pleasant and very efficient at what they do. If you've not been before - it's a little permanent food truck/shack sort of combo, no eat in option, just a few fringes of drinks, a counter to order and pay, some snacks to purchase, and a counter at the back to pick up some napkins. There are some pictures on the back wall, of Oscar's vintage vehicles. When you come here, you come here because the food is good, and the service is fast, everything I've eaten here is beyond amazing, and if you're working, on a lunch break, you'll be in and out in minutes. Their refried frijoles are the best in town in my opinion - because they have the ferried sloppy part, which also contains some whole beans - best of both worlds. The arroz is well seasoned and tasty - not just the thing on the side - like you want to eat the WHOLE thing! And the taco beef in their small burrito and enchilada is second to none honestly. First of all, a warning: THIS PLACE IS CASH ONLY! Now, on to the rest of the review: What the hell took me so long? I don't know. This place is about the size of an overgrown coffee hut. And you may have driven by it and never noticed it. They do grab-n-go Mexican food. They've been in Anchorage a long time, they are an institution. Frankly, I should have my Yelp CA badge removed for a period of time for just now having been here. I got a breakfast burrito. It was tasty. It did not commit the #1 breakfast burrito sin: not "treating" the tortilla in some way. It should be steamed, or grilled, or pressed, or greased. I don't care how you do it, just do something to make that tortilla more elastic and pliable and/or toasted and crisped. It should not be like my buying a 12-pack of tortillas at Costco and putting some stuff inside it, like I'm making a PB&J sando! It was also cheap. ($6.50) However, it was quite small. I could've definitely eaten two. In fact, next time I will definitely order two. The low cost of entry makes that possible. Give them a shot! Oscar's has been one of my favorite spots for years. The prices are super reasonable and the food is great. I tried the grande steak burrito recently. It was pretty good, but not very large like the name 'grande' implies. Still, I was full after eating it and I think the price was reasonable. The hot sauce also had a nice kick and was flavorful. My favorite thing on their menu is the soft and crunchy tacos, perfectly cheesy and crunchy. It's a great, quick place for tacos and I recommend everyone try it out! read more

STOP!!! I have been driving by this little taco truck for over 25 years and have never stopped.... Until today. I was fortunate enough to be on premises when the 3 yo daughter to one of the three cooks, granddaughter to another, came in for a burrito. The pure joy that that little girl displayed in seeing her dad and her papa made the trip worth it in itself. I remembered why I like Mom and Pop Shoppe's so much. The little girl then proceeded to invite everyone to come in and get to the counter and inform us all that there is enough food for everyone. It was like getting dessert first. I chose the Verde Gigantica (Sp?) Burrito. It is made on a 12 inch spinach tortilla and amply stuffed to the gills with burrito fixings. The thing was almost as big as my forearm. I got it to go and attempted to eat it as I navigated my way across town. (Note to self, do not repeat.) I wound up with hot sauce dripping in my beard, shirt, and dripping down my arm. This is not a complaint, Just an acknowledgment of the need for commitment to consuming this beast. The burrito itself was delicious. I look forward to going back and trying the Chili Riano. We're visiting Anchorage from Fairbanks & stumbled upon this amazing little taco shack. Coming from Texas last we gave up hope with Mexican food in Alaska believing we'd never find anything comparable until we found Oscars. The verde gigantic burrito tastes like home for us. If you are looking for the best Mexican food in Anchorage this is the place! The breakfast burritos (served only till 10:30) are excellent and about $3.00 a piece. Yes the people leaving the place with the bulging white plastic bags in their hands are taking those breakfast burritos to their coworkers. All brave souls! I hope they make it to their desk in one piece. The lunch crowd is a real mix of people. You will see the business professional, the construction worker and the occasional tourist that stumbled onto this place all in line to get a bite to eat. The counter only has a couple of spots to eat at but if you grab it to go it will be plenty warm enough when you get back to your office. There is always a special offered. Just try one! WARNING: Be careful when you open your food in an enclosed office setting. The swarm of people looking for where the wonderful smell is coming from might be a bit scary. I prefer to protect my food with the automatic stapler in one hand and my burrito in the other hand. This defensive posture tends to keep the on lookers away at a safe distance. It is a bit hard to find this restaurant but when you see the vehicles parked around the small trailer in the gravel parking lot and a group of people salivating in line you know it must be the right place. read more

Okay I finally made it to Oscars. I bought 1 steak taco and a steak torta. $10.00 Excellent seasoned steak. The taco was small standard sized corn tortilla with very little in it. $3.00 I was expecting a super sized crunchy tortilla loaded...Nope. The torta was smaller than a Subway half sandwich. $7.00. As far as cheap tacos, go to Benny's food wagon on northern lights. As far as torta sandwiches go to El Dorado. Theirs is more than twice the size. With sour cream. Their tacos are Not Tex Mex. do not get tacos. Their carne asada is the largest in anchorage. Covered with grilled onions and mushrooms. However the tastiest and cheaper carne asada plate is at Los Arcos on Dowling. it comes with a cheese enchilada. I need to say that El Dorado's taco's are small corn tortillas with beef then deep fried. Tasty but small. Further extra cilantro. Sometimes no charge. And extra pico de gallo is $3.50. But huge and fresh. I prefer los Arcos. But if you wanted to be treated by Lippy family go to el dorado. Very relaxed. read more

Oscar's is really more of a food cart where you can stand inside while you wait for your food. It's the cheapest place to eat breakfast anywhere near downtown. He offers 3 choices of breakfast tacos at the great price of 3 dollars each. Lunch is fantastic too. Cheap and very, very tasty. He's very fast so you'll never wait long for your food. I think that it must be close to some construction sites or something because I always see a few guys in work gear lined up getting 20 breakfast burritos in a large bags. Oh yeah, it's a cash only joint so don't forget to stop by an ATM if you're like me and don't usually carry cash. Well, I haven't actually been to this facility but I had a breakfast burrito from here and it was absolutely amazing! Coming from California, good breakfast burritos are on every corner, but up here it's been hard to find a place. They are a bit smaller than I'm use to but they taste wonderful. I get lunch at Oscar's quite often - over the years, probably 50 to 100 times. The "special" consists of an ala-carte selection, spanish rice, refried beans, your choice of "mild" or "hot" sauce, and a 12-oz. canned drink (big selection including V-8). They knock off a buck or two for the special and serve it up within a minute if there's no line. Hamburgers are made-to-order and take about five minutes (if there's no line). I always order a double cheese burger - which beats most of the national chains. Get there early - by 11AM for quickest service. By 1130 on a sunny day the line goes out the door. read more

It's served out of a little stand, where the line is generally out the door. Don't let this deter you though as the wait is less than a few minutes, and oh so worth it.
