Excellent food and service. Great interior design. My wife's favorite restaurant in Anchorage!

First time trying this place so I went to reviews and looked at some good pics and the Molcajete stood out for sure! This is located not even 2 sec walk away from the Hilton hotel. I usually wouldn't eat Mexican food in Alaska those two don't really go together in my brain being from California but I wanted to give it a try anyway lol I ordered the Cilantro Shrimp Molcajete and some chips and salsa on the side. First I will say I don't see why certain restaurants charge for chips and salsa it should be free in my opinion. The salsa lacked flavor and was more sweet than anything. (I asked for the spiciest salsa they have) and the order was $8.. I get it for the size I was surprised but that salsa wasn't good. Moving on to the main dish tho we have the Molcajete which was really good in my opinion. It came out SIZZLING! and the size of it wasn't what I was expecting. So if you're hungry I would def get one of those entrees ! The flavor of the fajita mix was good and the amount of shrimp you get was super filling. That dish was about $38 with the shrimp. The bartender was nice and asked me if I was doing okay a few times and also made sure my water was filled which was great he seemed really knowledgeable of all the good food recommendations and was pretty quick with service so employees were cool ! All in all I enjoyed my early dinner in a nice place that played good Latin music and I liked that it's walking distance from my hotel. I would eat here again one day and try some of their tacos next because I hear they are pretty good. I would say they need to just make the chips free because the are NOT worth $8 lol like at all but other then that decent place. read more

We loved our dinner here! The tequila selection is great, the food is fresh, and the staff are super friendly. The crab was a TOUCH overdone which normally wouldn't be a big deal but its current market price is $175 in the restaurants. But overall, a great spot. I very much loved the queso and my rockfish tacos. read more

We arrived without a reservation and the hostess was able to find us a lovely table quickly. The Portabello Chimichurri tacos were unique and delicious. Service was stellar (waitress from Georgia) and food arrived quickly, hot and perfect. So glad we gave it a try. read more

Really nice set up on the inside. Everything seems to have recently been updated. Great drink menu with a heavy nod to tequila drinks. Nice, open bar area. They have what looked to be a good brunch menu. We didn't eat, just had drinks. Server was attentive. If you're looking for a higher end Mexican restaurant in the area, would recommend. read more

I've been to Tequila 61 twice, and both visits were memorable. The restaurant looks fantastic. It's clean, stylish, and has a high-end feel that makes you excited to sit down and eat. The decor works really well, but I found the branding a bit confusing. The menu leans heavily on Mexican flavors, but the restaurant doesn't really call itself a Mexican place, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. On my first visit, I had the duck confit tacos with an Eddie's Tropical drink. The tacos were amazing, tender and full of flavor, and the drink was perfectly balanced. On my second visit, I got the rockfish tacos. They were tasty but way too spicy for me, which took away from the flavor. We also tried guacamole and queso fundido on both visits. The guac was solid, nothing fancy but good. The queso fundido is super cheesy and greasy, and once it cools down, it's tricky to eat. I've learned my lesson there. Service was mixed. The first visit, our server was okay. The second time, the server was excellent, very friendly and attentive. Both visits we had reservations and were seated right away, even during tourist season, which was a nice surprise. Overall, Tequila 61 is a beautiful spot with some standout dishes. The duck confit tacos are a must-try. Some dishes could use a little work, but the atmosphere, drinks, and high-end feel make it worth a visit. I have visited Tequila 61 twice now and both times left with a lot of food and a less than satisfied feeling. The service is ok, but it should be better considering this restaurant has never been busy when I've gone in. I like the ambiance, the decor is nice, but it's also sort of confusing since it's not exactly a Mexican restaurant. read more

Tequila 61 is an attractive restaurant with friendly, knowledgeable staff and good food. We enjoyed a shared tequila flight (a little pricey), some chips and salsa (not complimentary) and a side of guacamole before we ate our entrees. We enjoyed tacos and a fish salad in addition to some margaritas that were overly sweet but that did the job. The side of rice and refried beans was unmemorable and comparable to what I make in my home kitchen. Overall Tequila 61 created a pleasant dinner experience for the area but not anywhere near to a great Mexican food experience by National standards. For the price, I expected more developed flavors but I would recommend this restaurant. read more

I'd been wanting to try Tequila 61 for a long time so I'm glad I finally had the chance to go. Everything about my experience was great. Even on a busy Saturday night in August, my boyfriend and I didn't need to wait for a table for dinner. We started with the half dozen oysters which were very fresh. We shared the duck and rockfish tacos with rice and beans. The duck tacos' meat was tender with a unique blueberry salsa and generous helping of guacamole. The rockfish tacos were perfectly crispy with a flavorful sauce and slaw. For drinks sampled a few of the margaritas (spicy, fresca, and Eddie's Trrropical which came with very pretty garnishes), the Paloma Nouveau, and the El Diablo, all of which we enjoyed. The atmosphere is comfortable and our server was very attentive and regularly refilled our water. I would love to visit again sometime! read more

Love brunch season. Had the breakfast tacos with no chorizo and no potatoes. (I personally don't eat either, but they are included in the tacos). Last year when I found out about the brunch menu only made it twice. The flaming French toast is amazing too. Friend I went with this time had the omelette and really enjoyed it. Service was excellent. We were there shortly after 9:30 when they opened and it was clean and lovely. read more

I have to say this: Beware of restaurants who charge for chips and salsa. We were excited to try this restaurant, the reviews on open table were great and this was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. The restaurant's aesthetic was pleasant and unique. The seating wasn't my favorite because it was cramped in some places, plus the seating in the booth were super close which made for an awkward atmosphere at times. Our appetizer was the Chorizo empanadas and it had a nice crunch, but it didn't have much flavor. The guacamole sauce that was served with it was very tasty and had a nice kick!! Next, we tried the Queso with asada, this was again flavorless. For our entrees we tried the tacos, unfortunately you can't mix and match tacos, which would've made this experience better. We tried the duck tacos with the blueberry salsa, overall it was pretty delicious, just a little salty. We also had the jicama coconut shrimp, which was different. We never had jicama as a shell, so that was definitely interesting, not mad at the idea , it just wasn't my favorite. The coconut shrimp was very crunchy and had a great flavor. Lastly, we had the tres leches cornbread for dessert. It was good, the blackberries were the star of the dish for me. Overall, this restaurant wasn't my favorite in the area, all we wanted were some good tacos and tequila. The rum presentation was great tho. read more

Hmm...I want to love this place, but I don't exactly... If you want a place with ambiance/chic and decent/good food with nice cocktail selection (like a date) then this place is a good choice. But if your primary criteria is good food at a good value, I think you might be disappointed. Almost $100 (before tips) for 2 people (queso app, 2 orders of tacos (3 tacos/order), 2 margaritas, 1 beer). Inflation is real! I was quite disappointed with the queso - I expected a bowl of dippable cheese but got a small THIN plate of cheese that cooled down rather quickly accompanied with corn tortillas = make your own quesadilla at the table? The $5 extra chorizo was bland and didn't add much to it - not recommend. I did really enjoy the duck confit tacos though! 5 stars for that flavorfulness! The al pastor was good, the salsa it came with was spicy but didn't taste spectacular or necessary. The margaritas came in a slim tall glass (I was expecting goblets from Mexican restaurants ). They are small but mighty! I started feeling the alcohol after the first one. Overall lots of variety of mixed drinks and tequila to choose from. read more

Open concept with high ceiling, visible beams and piping, several types of industrial lighting, dramatic "bad ass" art and bar built in white hutch adorned on each side by a scantily clad dressed "goddess". Menu is eclectic with signature cocktails, margaritas, zero-proof drinks, tequilas and more. The food options are just as diversified with Shareables, Entrees & Soups and Salads with seafood, meats and vegetable dishes. Bravo!! The Vegetable Fajita Molcajete came to the table piping hot and the aroma was mouthwatering. Beans and rice on the side with corn tortillas. All delicious and filling. Our visit to tequila 61 was a bit disjointed, but overall a decent place to stop for lunch. We were staying at the downtown Hilton, and this was a very nearby restaurant on a drizzly Saturday which made the walk bearable. When we arrived, it seemed like the server took quite a while to offer drinks and take the order, despite the restaurant being pretty empty. Once she did arrive, everything went well, with the tortilla soup and the carne asada being the best parts of the meal. The queso fundido was nothing great to speak of with quite a thick hunk of cheese, and the rice and beans for an extra $5 seemed unseasoned and flat. Overall this is more of a bar / restaurant (The name kind of tells the story), so expectations should be along those lines. For lunch, the meal including tip and tax averaged about $35 per person. read more

We visited based on listing for Diners Drive Ins and Dives. We enjoyed the ambiance despite the location being very loud. We opted for the non-alcoholic mule - which tasted much like ginger beer but at a higher price, queso and fajitas. Everything looked appetizing and generous portions. We shared the fajitas and couldn't finish them. Unfortunately, neither of us felt very well afterwards. Parking was a bit challenging. We couldn't find reservations to make online. Came for my friend's Bachelorette party celebration weekend and we stopped by before heading out for the night for some light food and drinks. Their taco menu was definitely packed with a variety of seafood options that honestly made it hard to pick, so our group basically all decided to make it family style setting and just ordered almost the entire taco menu and shared. I was pretty much able to get a bite at least of the whole taco menu and enjoyed all of them! I honestly don't remember any that I didn't like so I don't think you can go wrong with the tacos here. The ones that stood out to me were the Duck Confit and the Jicama Shrimp in terms of flavor and the uniqueness! The cocktail options were very good as well and I loved the different tequila they included into their cocktails. I would highly recommend the Spoonful of Berries! I loved the flavor of the cocktail and the little meringue foam on top yum! This was our first time to Tequila 61. For appetizers we got the calimari and goat cheese balls. For our entrees we got the rock fish tacos and carne asada tacos. My wife got an orange Julius and I got a spicy margarita. Both drinks were excellent. The appetizers were both really good. The tacos were good as well. Good flavor profiles, very well cooked. Though to be honest, the carne asada tacos at Taco King are still hands down the best in town and a fair bit cheaper. They brought out our entrees at the same time as our appetizers. This was really annoying. It's nice to have some time between the two, plus there's no room on the table for all the food. I ordered rice and beans with my tacos. They never arrived and we were charged for two orders. They quickly fixed our bill with no problems. All in all, the food is excellent and there are a couple items we want to go back to try. The food is also pretty expensive. Service is excellent. There were some kinks that should have been worked out by now. Especially the lack of time between apps and entrees. read more

My wife and I are on a Denali tour and our bus stopped in town for lunch. I checked Yelp and like the menu so decided to give it a try. It was not busy and we were waited on right away. We ordered the guacamole and chips appetizer. They were a lot for two but we finished them off. I ordered the 1/2 pound ribeye burger and it was the best burger I've had in years! Juicy, tender, and SO flavorful. The cheese and jalapeno pepper made it twice as flavorful. The roasted potatoes were an unusual side but they were good. I would have preferred fries. My wife got the halibut sandwich and she loved it. The side of black beans was more like a soup. She crushed up the leftover chips in it and said it was delicious. We did not get dessert. If I came back here I would go back just for the burger. Highly recommend. read more

Tequila 61 is a very nice restaurant located downtown. This is a place I would go on special occasions since the price tag is a little high. My friend and I came here after some after work skiing and split the guacamole, jicama shrimp tacos, duck confit tacos, Baja tacos, a side of rice and beans and two modelos each. My favorite was the duck confit tacos, they were flavorful with pickled red onion and a blueberry salsa that added a unique kick. Close second was the jicama shrimp and last was the Baja tacos. The Baja tacos were ok, but nothing special for the price and I had a lot of bones in my fish. My least favorite thing was the beans and rice, very disappointing with little flavor. Come on taco Tuesday when tacos are half off or expect to leave with a $50 tab and still hungry. read more

It is nice to have a restaurant downtown without having a wait but the food was disappointing. The salsa tasted like they dumped a bottle of liquid smoke in in and said it was Chipotle. The smoked Manhattan tasted like gasoline. We won't eat here again. read more
