I don't know why it got only 3 1/2 stars. The food was terrific. I've all around this country RV'ing and can't say I've had any better.

Not as fond of Hacienda as I used to be now that I've visited Mexican restaurants in other states. Alaska doesn't seem to have any outstanding Mexican restaurants that I know of. They now add a 3.85% extra charge if you pay with a card instead of cash. If you often don't carry cash as I don't, this is inconvenient, but at least they have a sign on the door and on the menu telling you ahead of time. This place is already over priced in my opinion so I recommend coming with cash. Food and margaritas are just okay. I had a mushroom quesadilla with guacamole and the dinner combination with one beef, chicken, and cheese enchilada. The guacamole is basically mashed avocado which is disappointing. The enchiladas are still pretty bland as I mentioned in my previous review. I ordered a coconut margarita and it was too sweet. I subsequently ordered the house margarita on the rocks with salt and it was better, but I've had much better margaritas elsewhere. On the bright side, food and drinks arrived quickly and the restaurant was clean. Not worth going out of your way to come here, but not a bad option if you're in the area. read more

Being of Mexican descent, I can say that this food isn't very good. The only flavor you taste is salt. Where's all the spices!? The beans tasted like can beans as well. Yuck! Their website has an order online function, which I have used in the past, but now they said it does not work. They wanted me to order again in person and pay a second time, then request a refund from the bank. I pulled up the website and confirmed with the staff that it is indeed their website, showed the "order online" option on the website, and they said they don't receive the orders placed online. I guess those orders and the money goes into an abyss. They need to remove this from their website. read more

The people at Hacienda's are always pleasant and attentive. It's one of our anytime go-to local eatery because we are comfortable there. It's a 4 only because of my personal preference, I would like more fresh choices, like maybe more choices of entree salads. read more

Thought we'd give them a second try since we had a coupon. Big mistake. We noticed they raised their prices (understandable) , but that wasn't all. It was very cold outside, but even more cold inside! They decided to dump septic tanks in middle of day and door was left open for a good 45 minutes! Everyone was complaining and putting jackets on. I looked over at a poor elder Veteren cold as can be, pretty sad. No apology from wait staff, just "oh, they're working in bathroom". Another complaint is I just order rice for side with combo, and my spouse ordered beans. We had same meal except the beans, but not long after my spouse got terrible stomach ache and diarrhea. I'm pretty sure it was the beans. Thought we'd give them second chance, but sorry sticking to Xalos or if anyone else recommends good authentic real Mexican food? read more

This is one of the better Mexican restaurants I've been to in Anchorage. Slightly confused by the low rating, but seems like most of the reviews are older so maybe things have changed. The service was amazing here. Super quick, friendly and efficient. It's not a very big restaurant so I can see it getting very crowded if it's a busy night. We were promptly seated, and given water, chips & salsa. There was a mild & hot salsa. The hot wasn't super spicy, but it had good flavor. The menu isn't super extensive, but it has all the basics. Only thing missing is tortas, which I've only found at Serrano's so far. They don't have a drink menu, but have a pretty good selection of flavored margaritas. I thought the margaritas were very good, and decently priced. The flavored ones are more expensive, but larger than the standard lime flavor. I ordered the carne asada dinner, and my husband got a carne asada burrito. It was ala carte, but he added rice & beans for an additional $3.50. Little steep in my opinion since the burrito on its own was almost $16. My carne asada dinner was $20, and I thought the was decently priced. I received a nice piece of steak, and a cheese enchilada along with the standard accompaniments. The steak was juicy, tender and extremely flavorful. My husband enjoyed his burrito and said the meat on his burrito was the exact same as my carne asada, which sometimes is not the case. Kudos to them for consistent product. The burrito was a good size as well. My favorite hot sauce was readily available on the table along with Tabasco. I should've asked if they had other options, but I was happy to see one Mexican option. I thought the food here was good, decent portion sizes, complimentary chips & salsa and the service was excellent. Prices on some items are a little expensive, but it seems to balance out depending on what you order. I think this is one of the better Mexican restaurants I've been to in Anchorage! read more

I've been wanting to check this Mexican place out, and glad I finally did! My main complaint is the parking lot. It's very tight so just be a little careful. It shares parking with a small strip mall with a lot of random shops. Haciendo is a very cozy and intimate restaurant. I was actually pretty caught off guard when I walked in and saw how small it was. The staff couldn't be any friendlier! When we walked in we were instantly greeted and asked if we'd prefer a table or booth. We ended up just sitting at the bar as we knew we weren't super hungry. The bar only has 6 stools which made it an even more amazing experience. The bartender took his time to get to know us and ask where we were from. He overheard me mentioning I wanted a burrito and recommend two different ones on the menu. We were instantly served with water and chips and salsa. We both ended up getting the al la carte taquitos as neither of us were super hungry. They were delicious! You can get two without beans and rice or get the combo plate of two or three that comes with beans and rice. I couldn't have felt more welcomed at this restaurant and cannot wait to come back again. I'd say five stars for the service and speed of the kitchen here are the first thing to note. They are exemplary. We couldn't believe how fast the order was up. Id day three stars for the food. I wasn't super impressed with anything else. The hard shell tacos were a little larger than the hard shell tacos I get at most "authentic" Mexican restaurants. The meat didn't seem to have much of a flavor and they loaded the shell with about equal parts lettuce and meat. The cheese and pico was scarce. Their enchiladas were portioned well and covered with an enchilada style sauce. The rice and beans were of the typical style you'd expect. Their chips were just a tad over cooked and the hot salsa wasn't really that different from the mild salsa. But the service was solid and the food was out fast and it tasted fine. They immediate refilled our chips when the bin ran out. That was nice. I would try them again earlier in the day. And I would ask if they have any spicier salsa hanging out somewhere. read more

Yummy Margaritas!! I had two of the Cadillac margaritas and it gave me a pretty good buzz. Chips & salsa are complimentary which is pretty standard, but awesome! It comes with three types of salsa: mild, medium and hot. I didn't partake in ordering any food since I was only really there for margaritas for cinco de mayo. But the food portions looked ginormous. The plates were served piping hot like it was baked in the oven with the food. We came in at about 940pm and they closed at 10pm. But at 1015pm, we asked the bartender if we could order another drink and she was kind enough to allow us to! :) Overall, I had a great experience and will definitely be back again! read more

Had lunch here yesterday and Hacienda now charges 3.85% more if you use a credit card. While this is a new thing in Anchorage, this is the highest % I've seen. Even worse, their arithmetic is wrong and they are charging everyone more than 3.85% !!! When I questioned the manager about the overcharge, she said "no one else has complained about it.". And said the computer register is programmed by someone else, and "I don't know how to change it.". She didn't say anything like "I'll get it fixed. " I had to insist she void my charge and run the correct amount or I was going to walk out without paying. Finally she ran the correct amount. They're a low integrity restaurant. Open containers half the good from 3 months ago very rude manager food was not cooked. Vegetables were raw in fajitas. No condensation in Styrofoam container means food was packaged cold, tortillas were in usable and fro. Time we left with order to opening was 6 minutes food was close to room temperature. Most of the food was great! Though the service... not so awesome. I get it, Covid-19 is hard for everyone, but you know what they say about assumptions. Assuming that a caller is just calling in for chips (unless they end their order after just saying chips) is super rude, and a terrible way to start a conversation. Also, interrupting someone trying to give their order because when they were trying to say they wanted mild salsa (as opposed to medium/hot) because you assume they're not getting anything but chips... no. Here's the thing, I get the costumer service thing, some customers are truly crappy, but don't treat every customer who asks a question, like the one I asked "does the to go meal come with a basket of chips like you would get in dine-in?", like they must be one. The food however. Everything was amazing except the so called sopapillas. The chicken enchilada was superb. Perfect seasoning. Perfect cook. Just amazing. I ordered extra guacamole and beans so I could use the chips, beans, guacamole, and salsa to make some speck nachos too. The Chile relleno was hidden under the beans and I didn't think it was there at first, but once I found it? Awesome! Oh I also 100% recommend the mushroom quesadilla and the spinach enchiladas. The sopapillas I mentioned earlier.... if you have ever had authentic sopapillas (and I have) just don't order these. Real sopapillas are light airy beautiful pastry with a crisp golden crust. These...? Close textured, heavy, soft crusted, abominations. The only thing I appreciated was that they put the honey, cream, and chocolate on the side so these awful things weren't soggy as well. As a side also, they really need to consider taking payment over the phone. These are dangerous times and a lot of people are at-risk. For example, I ordered flautas with shredded chicken and the chicken literally thickened (rehydrated from stealing my saliva) in my mouth while trying to chew it. I drank five glasses of water. I came here for lunch with my mother while running errands around town. Hacienda is located on Debarr and Beaver St. across from a church. Getting in here is tricky if you're approaching the restaurant from Debarr going east-bound. There are two sets of traffic lights in front of the restaurant. There is no access to a left turn to the parking lot from the second light. You have to make a left turn at the first set of lights and come in from a rear entrance to the parking lot where the laundromat is located. The restaurant itself is located in a small strip mall next to Mom and Pops Convenience Store. The interior of the restaurant is small and cozy, more suited for intimate dining rather than a sports bar vibe like Gallo's or La Mex. Upon entering, we were greeted right away by a friendly lady at the bar and seated at a comfortable booth with a close view of the passing cars on Debarr Rd. The chairs and booths are closely grouped together that it could feel cramped when it gets crowded but there were only a few customers for lunch when we got there. Our server gave us a basket of tortilla chips right out of the oven (the best way to start off a meal at a Mexican restaurant) along with two cups of salsa: the white cup mild, the dark cup hot (just the right amount of spice not blazing hot like Chinese mustard which sets your nostrils on fire and clears the sinuses). My mother decided to go with the cheese enchilada lunch combo with rice and beans while I decided to go with the flauta lunch combo which was two deep-fried flour tortillas filled with shredded beef and topped off with sour cream and guacamole with a side of rice and beans. The food arrived at our table piping hot in less than ten minutes. Everything was delicious and fresh from the grill. The rice and beans were very hot with lots of melted cheese which is a big plus because a lot of other Mexican restaurants I've been to serve this side lukewarm. The rice also came out well-prepared. It was soft and full of flavor rather than hard from excessive cooking times by some other places. We enjoyed our meal and I saw some other items on their menu that I would like to try in future visits. Some of these include the Chili Colorado with top round beef smothered in red sauce served with hot tortillas and sour cream, the Mushroom Quesadilla with guacamole, the Halibut Ceviche Bowl which is marinated in lemon and served with pico de gallo, and the Camarones Rancheros which are jumbo prawns cooked in garlic butter, green peppers, tomato sauce, onions, and several spices. After a rough start to the week in which I knew Monday was mocking me, I decided to take myself out to dinner to celebrate National Margarita Day. Knowing that most Mexican restaurants would be busier as the night went on while others partook in this "holiday", I decided to stop by my local watering hole on the way home. After all, Haciendas is just down the street from me as a 15-20 minute walk. From the Gallo family (owners of many restaurants in town), Haciendas has long been known for their margaritas when I have asked friends where the best in town was. Hacienda's is almost always mentioned. Located in a strip mall off of Debarr Road and the intersection of Beaver it is often a place that can be considered out of the way too many. Unless you live or work on this side of town that is. I used to lunch here all the time when I did. The food would be considered your Americanized version of Mexican like many of the other restaurants in Anchorage. But I have always had pretty decent meals here. Not mind blowing but solid. And I noted last time I went in they had redone the interior with new coverings on the booths, etc. I arrived shortly before 5:00 to find several people already in the restaurant. I was told to go ahead and sit anywhere I want and settled in a booth along the far wall. Since I was there specifically for a top shelf margarita I ordered that and a chicken quesadilla. No sooner had I ordered when I heard the whirring of the blender and my margarita was placed in front of me. While the name of it escapes me it is considered their specialty and is actually one of the better margaritas I have had in a while. It was definitely smooth and one I plan on sticking to in the future. The chicken quesadilla was good. And I always enjoy their chips and salsa which they definitely do not scrimp on when it comes to the serving size. By the time I had finished my meal the place was actually quite filled. Again Hacienda's may not be the best or the most elaborate restaurant in town, but it's close to home for a good solid meal. It rates "a-ok" in my book. read more

The margarita was good, so that's always a bonus. My biggest issue - I ordered a taco salad because it sounded so good, but it came with just a giant plate of lettuce and 3 tortilla chips. The best part of ordering a Taco salad is to feel like you're ordering something healthy but really you're going to just eat the amazing fried taco shell bowl that is what makes a taco salad! I kind of felt like my hopes and dreams were shattered for a minute, or that it was some sick joke to make me eat a salad. Bummer. read more

After nearly a week up in Anchorage recently, I started having those Mexican food cravings that I get whenever I deprive myself of the most delicious food (after Italian) in the whole world. So while on a quick tour, I asked the driver if he could stop while I ran into Hacienda and ordered something to go. The bribe of a free burrito proved most effective in acquiring a YES answer. I was not disappointed in Hacienda. This location is the first of three locations proudly owned and operated locally for over 20 years by the Gallo family. With a good selection of the traditional Mexican cuisine favorites, I noticed a bar full of many selections of Mexican beers and tequila. I only wish I could have grabbed a margarita to go! Impressed by the table side Guacamole: it is made fresh at your table with 100% Hass avocados, serrano peppers, tomatoes, cilantro, onions, etc., then served with warm tortilla chips. Yummy! To make it easy to eat back at the hotel, I ordered a Grande Quesadilla to go. This is a most delicious tortilla stuffed with your choice of meat, vegetables and a special sauce. Served with sour cream, pico de gallo and that table side guacamole. I wanted to keep it basic so I ordered the carne asada beef with cheese and it was so tasty! I also took some tortilla chips to go for even great authenticity in dining. My south of the border cravings began to subside almost immediately. Hacienda offers an Americana choice with the usual burger and fries and this being Alaska, yes, there is SALMON on the menu. Alaskans and other visitors should try the wonderful Hacienda as it is a great addition to the local dining scene and a life-saver for this southern Californian going into Mexi food withdrawal up in the Great North! read more
