Long wait, tourist-trap, pricier-than-most, poor service? Seems to be what I hear and read about this place BUT...
none of this was true during my 2 visits.
Key to really enjoy this popular, to the level of "hype", place in a busy touristy Palermo area is to know WHEN to go and WHAT to order. I was a solo traveler and I went there on a weekday at about 4pm (very late lunch) and Saturday 12.45 pm, the guidebook says they open at 12.30 but when I got there it was almost 25% full. Both times there was NO wait. Service was friendly at the normal pace like anywhere else in BsAs. (many US tourists probably would complain that the service is slow). I had much worse service than here in BsAs, in busy tourist areas in Europe and the US.
So expect to wait a long time, and possibly not great service if you go during peak time, any day. Seating was a bit tight but standard for BsAs. The decor was cute and fun, if not kitschy. Bathrooms were nice.
OK, how's the food?
First, don't order the side dishes (fries, salad, etc) as you will find out why in a little bit. And for heaven's sake, don't do what this girl at my next table ordered: a mixed salad and grilled chicken...oy!!!
Second, pick a cut and order LESS than what you think you will eat. My first visit, I had a Lomo (tenderloin) con pimiento (i think it was 700 grams--did not use my math at the time, oh well)-and this was my mistake as it was huge! Embarrassingly I could only ate half and had to request a doggie bag. (I know, it's uncool but I wouldn't be able to go to sleep throwing that away). The second visit I had Ojo (ribeye)--medium portion and I had a hard time finishing it. (I'm a big eater!)
Both times I ordered medium rare (the way I usually eat steak) and both were of great cut and executed perfectly. I'm no steak expert but it seems they don't season steak at a parilla in BsAs. But if the quality is good, a little sprinkle of salt at your table would be more than enough if you need to. (my curious self questions how good this would be if the meat were marinaded the Korean way. Yum!)
Now, they give you basic bread basket/butter, pate and several tiny cups of dips and sides (various sauces, mashed potato/squash, pickled veg, salads). Altogether makes ordering a side dish unnecessary (unless you are with a big group, I guess).
Is all this expensive? I think not..Each meal cost me about 400 pesos, with tip and one bottle of Champagne (about US$34 current informal rate). The steak price list seems high but size and quality is totally more than worth it. I ate at a few other parilla of similar class, and at some basic grill counters in a shopping mall food court in BsAs, and the price here is actually not that different adjusting for quality, portion size, service and everything! Sharing between 2 or more people will certainly be much more economical if you try to save.
All in all, this steak house is as good as it gets! I will make sure to go back next time I'm in BsAs. read more
