    "the rustic"
    DineoutGal A.

I love calamari and their "frittura di calamari" ($12) is probably one of the most tender squid I've ever had (even my 3 year old niece ate them). They're lightly battered and very delicious. No sauce, just a lemon on the side. The portion is surprisingly small at that price but the quality made up for it. Ordered the small margherita pizza ($14) which is about 10 inches. It's on a thin crust that tasted greasy (and more akin to a foccacia taste); the toppings were okay but I don't think I'd order this again due to the greasiness. Tried "the rustic" ($16), they say it's not a pizza but they don't describe what it is in the menu! LOL. It's like a rustic partially open calzone. I've attached a picture. It was a hearty dish filled with artichoke hearts, calabrese sausage capicollo, and mushrooms. Good filling dish and more interesting than a regular pizza. The seafood risotto ($24) was the best dish of the evening served with mussels, shrimp, scallops and fish in a spicy tomato sauce. There were lots of mussels but not that many shrimp. The risotto was cooked well and the sauce was really delicious. I don't usually eat risotto in a tomato sauce so it was a nice change from the white wine and parmesan versions. The vitello capriola ($28) is veal scallopine goat cheese reduced sauce with side of rapini and rosemary roasted potatoes. Veal wasn't that tender but the sauce was good. The rapini is not my fav veggie but it was good along with the tender roasted potatoes. I'd skip their pizzas and go with their seafood offerings as they seem to shine in that category. Comparatively, I'd say their pricing is a tad more than other Italian restaurants like Bellisimo or Tre Visi. But I'd say their quality is pretty good.

Hmm an Italian place with only 2 pasta dishes for lunch. Mostly calzone and pizza I had lunch pasta, penne with a side of meatballs , see photo and bread. Bread was fresh, olive oil nice Meatballs kinda dry a flavorless, sauce was excellent, pasta a little over done Flies inside the restaurant a constant annoyance the whole time I was there

Good size portions and very tasty. I've been here numerous times and the cooking is fairly consistent.

Our server, Zane, was terrific. He had a great sense of humor, was attentive without hovering, and made us feel well taken care of throughout lunch. Everyone at the table loved their meal. My sister ordered the Arancini as her entrée and polished off every bite. I kept things light with the Caesar salad topped with grilled chicken but substituted an oil-and-vinegar dressing instead of the traditional Caesar. The chicken was perfectly grilled, the salad was fresh, and the portion was generous. My husband ordered the pasta, and the kitchen was happy to substitute a spicy tomato sauce for the rosé sauce, which we really appreciated. My brother-in-law thoroughly enjoyed the Piri Piri Chicken. We also discovered a fantastic Canadian Riesling from Tawse Winery in the Niagara region. The only disappointment was the limited by-the-glass wine selection, so we ended up ordering a bottle instead. Not a huge issue, but it would be nice to have a few more options by the glass. A couple of tips for first-time visitors: parking is paid street parking, and the restaurant can be a little tricky to find. Look for the colorful striped exterior of the Mere Hotel--the restaurant is tucked behind it along the river. Overall, we had a terrific experience. Great food, excellent service, a beautiful waterfront setting, and a relaxed atmosphere made this one of our favorite lunches in Winnipeg. We'd definitely come back.

This section is elevated above the main floor and has wonderful golden leather chairs where I could have lingered for hours. The menu is broad with Italian, Spanish, and even African dishes so it's not hard to find something tempting. To start we shared some bruschetta-there are six varieties and you can choose 3. We LOVED the pear/prosciutto as well as the Brie/apple varieties but the standard tomato variety was also great. At 6 pieces to an order you need 4 people (like us) unless you're only having a salad (like my wife) as your main. We also tried the Piri Piri chicken-very flavorful, the paella-yummy, and the chicken and chorizo pasta. They serve cocktails and the margarita and the whiskey sour were both standouts for their quality even if they were a touch lite on booze. Our server was super friendly and helpful. Loved the vibe, location and service. Recommended.

Poutine was decent - not the best I've had in town but not the worst. The portion was very small, and I was surprised to see it priced almost as much as an entree on the bill - they don't have it on the menu a la carte but you can upgrade a side of fries to poutine for $4. Since the pasta dish didn't normally come with fries I asked if they could just do a side of poutine and they said yes (and then charged $14 for it). It wasn't worth it. The blackened chicken fettuccine was disappointing. Our host highly recommended it, and it's a dish I generally enjoy enough I even make it at home. The blackening rub they use had almost no spice, which to me defeats part of the point of "blackened" chicken - the taste was more on the herby side. The noodles themselves were bland and the sauce was almost non-existent - sadly underseasoned. I chopped the chicken up into tiny bits and mixed it all together so that they flavors from the chicken could add at least some excitement to the pasta, but while it helped it didn't quite save the dish. Overall the experience was fairly mediocre. Maybe I should have gotten a burger, but I went with the host's recommendation instead for a dish I normally quite enjoy and came away disappointed. The price of the side of poutine is on me - I didn't ask ahead of time. But it came out to be nearly double what I'd expected for half as much as I'd thought it would be.
