This was a regular haunt for years (solo nights, date nights, friends' nights and family nights). Always sat in the bar area with the cozy fireplace, no matter the party size. While back in Winnipeg we made reservations for 4 for 4:30 on a Tuesday. Got seated at the front window nook. It was a little cool, but did provide some illumination. The waiter seemed aloof and inattentive from the beginning. Our small table got loaded with our entrees shortly after receiving our appies. Trying to keep us moving for a later seating I assume. The shrimp appies were amazing. The veal dolce was gelatinous and mediocre (disappointing for the price). The lasagna was good enough to take home for later. We had a wait to get the servers attention to get our check and then it was incorrect on the first attempt. All in all, we felt it's charm and ambiance are a thing of the past and with so many other choices available, we will probably not return. Sadly, an end to an era! read more

The worst dining experience I have ever had! Service was terrible- manger an want to be general manager Illena who I told the food was old smelling an had mold on it ???? Like it had been around for weeks !!!! Wow - what a mistake -she was very rude an did not care about my feelings or what i was trying to say to her. ("This is my daddy's restaurant an I'll do what I like") She only thinks about her self an what is important to her restaurant- if u have a problem dont let them give u a gift certificate!!!! Its not a way of them saying sorry for thier mistake! They just are trying to get u to come back an spend more money! Dont fall for Illena's fake tricks to get over on customers. I love calamari and their "frittura di calamari" ($12) is probably one of the most tender squid I've ever had (even my 3 year old niece ate them). They're lightly battered and very delicious. No sauce, just a lemon on the side. The portion is surprisingly small at that price but the quality made up for it. Ordered the small margherita pizza ($14) which is about 10 inches. It's on a thin crust that tasted greasy (and more akin to a foccacia taste); the toppings were okay but I don't think I'd order this again due to the greasiness. Tried "the rustic" ($16), they say it's not a pizza but they don't describe what it is in the menu! LOL. It's like a rustic partially open calzone. I've attached a picture. It was a hearty dish filled with artichoke hearts, calabrese sausage capicollo, and mushrooms. Good filling dish and more interesting than a regular pizza. The seafood risotto ($24) was the best dish of the evening served with mussels, shrimp, scallops and fish in a spicy tomato sauce. There were lots of mussels but not that many shrimp. The risotto was cooked well and the sauce was really delicious. I don't usually eat risotto in a tomato sauce so it was a nice change from the white wine and parmesan versions. The vitello capriola ($28) is veal scallopine goat cheese reduced sauce with side of rapini and rosemary roasted potatoes. Veal wasn't that tender but the sauce was good. The rapini is not my fav veggie but it was good along with the tender roasted potatoes. I'd skip their pizzas and go with their seafood offerings as they seem to shine in that category. Comparatively, I'd say their pricing is a tad more than other Italian restaurants like Bellisimo or Tre Visi. But I'd say their quality is pretty good. read more

The atmosphere and spirit in the restaurant is excellent. They make you feel welcome and set you up for an enjoyable evening. Our server was very engaged and knowledgeable and was always ensuring things were going well for us. Surprising that they have this impressive looking bar but nary a beer on tap. That was a disappointment. The house merlot is okay. A bit thin but still enjoyable. The basket of bread was nice and fresh with tasty dipping oil/vinegar combo. The Cesar salad lacked flavour. Nice crisp lettuce but very bland dressing. Our server quickly offered the house Italian as a replacement. It was better but still was missing that extra zing of flavour. I really enjoyed the pollo all Carrostsa. Nice light coating and it was moist. The side of pasta was okay. The temperature was not hot and the sauce I found a bit bland. I got fettuccine Alfredo and it was mostly good. But lots of the pasta was stuck together. Not a big issue until you bite into it and it makes a crunch because it was undercooked, I was fine with that. But the thing that really grossed me out was after my ice melted in my water there was this disgusting film left on the water which is often due to dirty ice. I'm very happy I didn't get sick from that. Waitresses were extremely nice and attentive but unfortunately I would not recommend this restaurant due to lack of cleanliness and food quality. read more

I really like the newer decor that they have at the restaurant. It's a nice seperation between the restaurant and the lounge area. The only bad thing is the door in the lounge area has a few tables around it and if you sit by the doors during cold weather you will certainly getting chilly. Our server was quite good, but our food took quite a long time. I had their own take on sushi, but it was Italian style. It was really interesting. I don't know if I would order it again, but I'm glad that I gave it a try. Parking is a little difficult unless you get a spot right on the street because having to cross the street with no crosswalk can take a bit. Otherwise no complaints! read more

Went once for dinner. Ordered chicken and pasta. Chicken tasted rotten right away. Ate two bites. Called the waitress to report it and return it. She comes back and says the chicken was fresh because "it was made yesterday". Had an upset stomach afterwards. Told a friend about this episode, and not only was she shocked at the "it was made yesterday" casual response, she told me she had also had a distress after eating there months earlier, and was mistreated after reporting that fact to the restaurant staff. read more

Food was good. Service and time to the table was not! Dining out isn't just about good food, it's 2/3 service and experience. You can order good food for pickup and delivery from almost anywhere. What you can't get anywhere is good servers and decent times from the kitchen. It took over an hour to get our pizza. The couple sitting next to us got a pizza in about 15 minutes, less time than it took for us to get our salads. It took more than 15 minutes to get a beer from the time we sat down. The servers are so bad, they brought water only once. She asked the table next to us if they wanted water, after she emptied the pitcher into my glass, which she didn't even fill up. They did want water as well, so she said she'd be back with water later. She obviously didn't want to bother coming around more than she had to. And she certainly didn't. We sat on the patio. The tables were so disorganized we had to struggle to get past them to leave. The manager noticed this and barked at 3 of the serving women to move a table. He had to tell them 3 times before they even caught on. Even he seemed frustrated with how bad they were at their jobs. We saw Skip the Dishes pickup for delivery many times while we were there. Perhaps it's a known issue, that Mona Lisa has terrible service, and takes painfully long to get the food to the table. So smart people order their food for delivery. Smart people don't go to Mona Lisa to sit down and eat. Terrible service, terrible time from the kitchen and bar, and that means terrible management, cause they have no idea what's going on. Stay away from Mona Lisa, or simply order for delivery. read more

We hadn't been to Mona Lisa in a while and it seems it was renovated. It looks really good. They had live music, but we couldn't get a table in the dining area. We were placed in a squishy table against the dessert display in the lounge. So, while the atmosphere may have been a lot better had we made a reservation for the restaurant, the service and food did not disappoint. My husband had the cannelloni and I had the Alex pizza. I was very impressed and will certainly be back. The coffee and espresso creme brulee was also delicious. read more

The service was terrible. The waitress was rude and abrupt. If being followed around in a store because they think you might steal had a restaurant equivalent this place would definitely be it. When my friend went to the washroom, the waitress kept checking to see if I was still there. There were flies inside the restaurant, which were less annoying than the waitress tbh. The 'hood values this place as much for its late hours, great wine selection and friendly staff as for its food. But let it be known that the food is pretty great too. One of my favourites is the "rustic" pizza. More calzone than pizza? Perhaps. All I know is, it looks fabulous on the plate and tastes even better in the mouth. It's like a pizza in first bloom, unfolding its crusty petals to reveal the delicious tastes inside. Mona Lisa will deliver it, too...and I tell you, it is a joy to open the box and behold this hand-crafted beauty, rather than the usual flabby facsimile that we accept as pizza at our doorsteps. I'm also a fan of the Calabrese pizza -- similar taste but with traditional crust and presentation. Yes, this pizza is a tad expensive. You must ask yourself: Do I want something cheap to fill my somach in a hurry, or am I longing for tasty enjoyment? If you want the former, choose Dominos. No shame in that. But if you want to savour your pizza -- perhaps in the company of something voluptuous and leggy, like a nice Cabernet -- Mona Lisa's it is. For pasta, one stand-out for me is the pescatore, packed with seafood. Mona Lisa has a nice touch with their red sauces, whether on pasta or pizza. In years past, my favourite pasta was the shells stuffed with ricotta and shrimp. It's still a good dish, but they've moved to a more artful presentation that I don't think works as well, taste-wise. instead of chopping up the shrimp and mixing it with the ricotta, they perch the shrimp atop the stuffed shells. Pretty, but I prefer the tastes combined in the shell, rather than deconstructed. In summer, the patio is always popular -- perhaps even more so since Corydon Village turned into one long strip of sushi joints. There our friendly and gracious host, Joe Grande, can often be seen holding court. Sit at the bar inside the Cantina, and you will be treated to great service by a friendly bartender...with a good-natured tolerance for women of a certain age who are out to enjoy a lively Friday night dinner. And if you want sushi, try Mona Lisa's Italian version. Well worth a taste, and great for sharing. read more

Found this little gem when we couldn't find another restaurant. The inside was beautiful and the artwork was amazing. We went on a Saturday night and got a table but I would recommend reservations as they were packed. The service and food were excellent. I couldn't finish my meal so I took the leftovers and I can't wait to have them. This is a definite stop when you are in Winnipeg! read more

Consistency is not this places strong suite. Not sure why things are so good some days and others they are not. On this day I ordered the veal with fettuccine side. The whole dish was swinging in oil and raw garlic. I would have sent it back but i did not want to disappoint my girlfriend. Our last visit was so so and the time before was awesome. What gives? I have been a customer of Mona Lisa since it was a small pizza take out and have enjoyed most of what they have on there menu of course my favorite is the pizza but the mussels in in wine dish is pleasing and delightful with a great beer, I can taste it right now! the veal parmigiano is fantastic in fact all there veal meals are to die for. Great food. However, on weekends be prepared to wait over 45 minutes. We waited an hour and were thinking about leaving. The owner came up and tried to tell us waiting this long is normal and annoyed us even more by telling us to "chill" and don't be upset. Right. I love any place that has yummy shareable appetizers, and this place is no exception. The cheese plate is awesome, as well as Caterina's Crostini's. We went there at 5:15 yesterday (July 10th) and were quickly greeted and shown to a table on the patio. There was only one other table occupied at the time. The girl brought us just drink menus and then proceeded to make a phone call while we sat and waited. No waitress came to greet us or give us the full menu or take our drink orders. After about 10 minutes she ended her phone call but still ignored us, I spoke up and asked for dinner menus. She then disappeared for another 10 minutes. At 5:35 we decided we had enough and got up from the table to leave. A waitress suddenly appeared as we were leaving full of excuses as to why we hadn't been served. We've been twice and the lasagna and chicken parmigiana were both excellent. Generous portions, great tasting, and personable (and excellent!) service each time. Last night we had the dessert special - espresso creme brûlée! It was amazing! We voiced our compliments to the chef (nice lady) and I hope it becomes a permanent addition to the menu.
