If you want a real, locals vibe poutine experience stop here. We had Poutineville (I know) last…read morenight because it was close to our hotel in Quebec City and this was night and day different in all the best possible ways! First they put a layer of curds on the bottom of the bowl (no where else did this from chain places to supposed old school restaurants) then the fresh hot fries then more curds (A LOT) on that then the gravy. The cheese curds squeaked when you ate them. It's set up like a Subway sandwich place, cafeteria tray style so nothing special inside but who cares with poutine this good? They people inside mostly spoke French but also could switch to English and were friendly. They had lots of tables and booths inside and at least 8 tables with umbrellas outside. This is just off the main route heading back to US border for us going home to CT. Will absolutely be our last Canadian stop now before crossing the border. They also have a cheese and gourmet shop attached and they were selling fresh corn in a kiosk in the parking lot (which you can't take back across unfortunately because it looked great). And everyone purchased these cream filled smallish donuts so we probably missed a trick but we were so over full of sweets and pastries from our Montréal/Quebec vacation we just couldn't get any. Highly recommend.

So curd cheese is huge in Quebec and everyone has their fav but only very few know about this…read morelocation. Of course having a true québécois best friend helps as her family lives in Kingsley so they know the best cheese shops so this weekend I got to try the SQUEAKIEST curd cheese of life. Now I know you're all going to say oh I've had fresh and great curds before. BUZZER SOUND .. you're wrong ! The best curd / freshest / squeakiest can only come from this location. If it's not made right there on the spot it's a disgrace wise words from my best friend. You can get Kingsley or guillaume back home but once it gets transported from fresh to cold and hot and cold and hot it just turns out MEH and loses its beautiful taste. So do yourselves a favour and make the drive to this location and grab a large bag for $8 dollars to go and then take a seat and order a poutine.

My first visit to Chez Charlie was for a meeting and I initially only ordered coffee and ice water…read more But I was hungry so I ordered the crêpes and fruit salad. Coffee, crêpes & service were very good. However they don't have ice for glasses of water! The fruit salad that comes with the crêpes is canned when I would much prefer fresh, and it contains papaya, which at first I thought was odd but it did taste good. I was a little disappointed but I was thinking about crêpes and fresh fruit with a maple syrup & cream sauce l'd had a few times at Cochon Dingue, a restaurant in Sillery, Quebec City. Their crêpes come with lots of fresh fruit and are much more delicate as well. I've just checked their current menu and they have switched the sauce for a raspberry coulis, which sounds interesting. Anyway, those crêpes cost at least twice as much and it's necessary to have a reservation to be sure of getting any! And of course it's quite a long drive form Sherbrooke! I'm going to try to mix a little coffee cream with some of the maple syrup at Chez Charlie when I go later this week and see how I like it. I do want to point out that the coffee at Charlie's, as the person who took me there calls it, is very very much better than one would expect from a small neighbourhood restaurant. I was very impressed with it. Now I'm going to find out if their decaf is just as good because the first time I was there I drank so much coffee of their delicious coffee I was wired all day and couldn't get to sleep!
