Got some food delivered from here; I like carretas in another city so I figured it was good here. The ceviche was surprisingly good; they gave me shrimp instead of mixto but it was still yummy. Very flavorful, i just wish the chunks of raw onion werent so big and they gave you more than one tostada to eat it on. The fajitas were meh. It was the same price as other, better tex mex places but not as tasty and smaller portions. Not enough tortillas to eat it all in. They gave me a side salsa and it was so tiny and bland I felt like it was just a waste of plastic to package it up. Nothing in the box had any flavor except the caramelized onions. This one was hard. I love, love the little sneaky patio in the back. Sure it isn't sizeable but the flora and tiled artwork are just great. People from work love this place. Before I start this review I need to provide you with a caveat. I do enjoy Mexican food but it is not my favorite cuisine. What does this mean for you? Well, it doesn't really mean anything to you specifically. What I mean is that when I end up here it is because I have grown tired of deciding where to go and leaving the choice up to my co-workers. La Carreta is not bad. In fact, it is a decent place to get Mexican food for lunch. My go-to order is the fajitas, usually steak fajitas. I hear if you eat a bunch of red meat it is really good for you which is why I chose this item. The fajitas are decent but have never blown me away with flavor. I would say they are pretty standard fajitas. Me, I like fajitas that are super flavorful and these just don't do it for me. The shining star of Carreta is their wait staff. Arrived @ 6:45pm for dinner tonight with a business associate. La Carreta was recommended by the hotel front desk. Seated quickly and server approached the table quickly. She made an entree suggestion, asked about appetizers and took our beverage order. We ended up eating a Carne Asada and the Pollo Loco. Both were nicely cooked, presented well, tasty, made from fresh ingredients and we enjoyed them. The grilled veggies (Zukes, Yellow, Broccoli, Carrots) were cooked perfectly. I got a Flan to go as well. It was a tad over cooked on one side - I suspect they do not use a water bath when cooking. Also the caramel sauce, made from caramelized sugar, could have been cooked slightly longer, as the sugar still had a little grit to it. The Flan was good - it just could have been monumental. The restaurant was well appointed and very clean. Glad we dined here tonight. Edit: Ate here on Tuesday 08-29 as well for dinner. All great during that dinner as well. read more

I don't understand how this place is still open. The prices are sky high for some mediocre "Mexican" food. I ordered the dinner combo plate with one enchilada and one tamale, for $14 there should have been more food on the plate. Our server at the end of the dinner, when she handed us the check had an extra fajita plate charge that no one at our table ordered. When we asked her about the charge she stated, it was left over from the table before us and as someone that has served before I know you don't just have left over expenses pop up on other tables tickets... very sketchy service. The restaurant is dirty and definitely needs an update, the floors were sticky and gross, and the place just felt dirty. I'd rather travel on down the road for better food. read more

We decided to try this Govt. Street location for the first time, today, Cinco de Mayo. The place was packed, the patio was open, and we asked to sit there, they said "sure, pick a spot and we'll find you with menus". The interior was bustling and appeared packed with people and a small wait list. We proceeded outside to the back patio and were amazed to experience some of the most prompt and attentive service we've ever had in Baton Rouge. We were quickly noticed, and I noted the table we selected needed a wipe down. That happened in about a minute while a young man quickly followed and took drink orders while delivering menus. A team effort, amazing. We were given a normal basket of chips/salsa and placed our orders. I was afraid with the overflow of patrons that we'd have forgotten service, especially outside on the patio, but instead we had our waiter and others continuing to check on us as we awaited our food, ready to react to drink or other needs. The food delivery was a little slow today, but we were perfectly comfortable to enjoy our outside patio table and await the food. Our food selections were straight off the kitchen hot and fresh, reasonably priced and tasty. What a well run establishment today, great job. read more

I remember when La Carreta opened. It was one of my favorite places. On my most recent visit, I was not very satisfied. The one thing I enjoyed was the Queso. Everything else was lackluster--from the margarita to the oily chips and to the ranchero sauce on the enchiladas. I have no complaints about the staff, our server did an excellent job. The food wasn't awful, it just wasn't really great. Out of all the Mexican options in BR now, this one will probably fall toward the bottom of my list. I really hope they can get back to their old glory some day, because it used to be 4 or maybe even 5 stars. read more

I tried La Carreta a few weeks ago and I loved it! I had heard that the Government Street location was better than the one on Bluebonnet and I definitely agree. I just love the atmosphere and the outdoor seating at the Government Street location better. I also found the quality of their food to be more exceptional as well. I went for lunch and I loved the great lunch specials! My tacos and tortilla soup were delicious and were only $9.95. I also enjoyed their tasty complimentary salsa. I found their lunch items to be well worth the decent price you pay. I will 100% be back the next time I'm craving Mexican food in Baton Rouge! read more

UPDATE: We contacted the restaurant directly and they did replace the queso but we went to pick it up. Good for them for correcting that part. I still am dismayed at the portion size for the fajitas. But in all fairness want to give the restaurant their due for comping the queso when we went to pick it up. I added a star for that and a star because the food is delicious- just not enough of it. ORIGINAL: What a rip off. We ordered from here tonight on Waitr. It was $90 for two large fajitas (see portion for $23/each below) and one kids taco and one large queso. The queso was missing which Waitr refunded. The fajitas were hugely disappointing. That is not a $23 portion. This is the second time we have had an issue ordering Waitr from here. I have 2 main complaints about La Carreta Mid City and they are 1- Inconsistency 2- Unseasoned Meat Other than that my experience has been relatively good. I usually order on Waitr but decided to do carry out a few times this past month. I've had issues with my orders before but Waitr has always reimbursed me or made it right. As far as inconsistency goes, I order the same thing every time (chicken flautas with a side of rice, 2 street corn, and a small guac and small queso. Flautas and queso are the most consistent, but sometimes the flautas are more soggy than other times and they dont always give me my side of rice. The corn is almost always different. The menu says it comes with creme, cotija cheese and cilantro. Last time I visited, it was just corn dunked in creme and nothing else on it. They have forgotten the cheese often on my waitr order (even when I order extra cotija) but I've always been reimbursed by waitr. This time, I was not reimbursed because I ordered carryout so i had to just eat my creamy corn and deal with it. Guac sometimes is suuuuuper oniony. Like to the point you dont want to eat it. But some days you get some really perfectly balanced guac and those days make it all worth it. As far as the seasoning on the meat goes, my chicken flautas are always bland and everyone I've eaten with says that they dont season their meats well. I have 1 friend who wont eat here at all because of it. Thankfully these are easy fixes for the restaurant. I'll continue to eat here and probably update my review as i do so read more

We were looking for a place for some chips and queso when we came across La Carreta in Baton Rouge. The Government Street location was not terribly busy as we arrived around 3:15 on Monday for lunch. Though we had missed the cut off for the lunch menu which happened until 3, we made it perfectly in time for Happy Hour which was easily a better option as they had 2-for-1 Margaritas (Strawberry and Mango were amazing).
