Steak Enchilada plate and al la cart classic taco

Modesto Tacos Tequila Whiskey off LSU campus on Highland Road remains one of our favorite spots for Mexican food. The skinny berry margarita is still a go-to, the portobello mushroom taco is excellent as always, and the empanadas are a must-try. The place has that lively, approachable vibe with a steady flow of college and local patrons that tells you the food is consistently fresh and flavorful. That said, I've noticed a concerning new habit lately. Again, on our last visit with a party of three, they automatically added an 18% gratuity to the bill--even though I had to get up to fetch my own napkins and utensils. It wasn't crowded and it wasn't my usual waiter, but this practice feels unnecessary for small parties and risks driving loyal patrons away. We still like the food and atmosphere, but I hope they reconsider automatically adding gratuity on smaller tables. Date: 04/21/2026, table 603, check #188

The space is very eclectic. Nice ambiance for friends to meet for a bite and come cocktails or a first date. It does have a sports bar feel too and the patio seems nice when it's not too hot. The salsa and chips are super delicious. The chips are coated almost like Doritos. I had a drink - the blood orange colada. It was ok. Had 4 tacos- I enjoy and would order again the carna asada and al pastor on corn tortillas. I had the cabo (grilled ) shrimp and pork belly escabeche - I did not enjoy. Shrimp were blah.. no seasoning. Pork belly was too fatty. The black beans were delicious and prepared differently. I would return but try something different. Price point is decent for a Mexican joint near LSU. Service was good. My waiter please other wait staff were very attentive. Try it out and let me know what you think.

I finding new Mexican restaurants to love. This place has amazing tacos. The chips and salsa were a bit lacking but the food made up for it. I got the Al Pastor and Shrimp tacos and WOW tasted so good. My friends enjoyed their orders too. We definitely have a new favorite spot that we all can agree on. The service and the vibes of this place were impeccable especially considering we went on cinco de mayo. The service was fast and very efficient. Definitely give this place a try if you haven't before.

Modesto - Baton Rouge Lunch: Brisket Birria , Al Pastor , Baja Fish --all solid. Plus, that creamy queso . Brunch: Birria Fries , Chilaquiles w/ Brisket Birria, Pastry War , Bloody Mary , Jalapeño Marg , Champagne with a frozen orange ball --a little boujee, a lot of fun. Also, don't sleep on their Tortilla Soup and the Bacon, Egg & Cheese Breakfast Taco --because sometimes, you just need the classics. Mangonado on the Rocks: Chamoy & Tajín inside the drink, but let's be real--a Mexican spot that does a full chamoy & Tajín rim WINS in my book. That said, Modesto is still a close favorite--because when the food is this good, I can let it slide... for now.

Food 10/10. Drinks awesome! I think they also have the best table chips I ever had! Tacos omg to die for. Sometimes they have the birria fries as a special you should try! Also I know salad isn't what you think of when you go to a Mexican restaurant but omg that Caesar salad is probably the best I've EVER had. Service is typically pretty good. If you have a large party you should absolutely make a reservation bc it's sometimes hard to get a seat. And the patio is really nice! Try the lunch menu if you're on a budget! Whole lotta bang for your buck

First, I just wanna say nothing was wrong with the food. The flavor was great. The issue was in the service our waitress. I didn't get her name, but she had dark curly hair and was terrible. She was unattended the entire time we were left without chips and salsa or water for over 30 minutes and when we asked for more, it took her about 20 minutes to get back to us. Keep in mind we are sat right by the kitchen, and she was passing by us back-and-forth and multiple times she saw our empty table. I ordered the tortilla soup and two tacos on the menu. There is only one price and size for the tortilla soup which is $11 when she finally brought out our food a small cup of the soup came out and I asked her and she said " oh, I just assumed you wanted the smaller portion since you also got the tacos". This in a way made me feel judged. I wanted leftovers I confirmed with her that the portion she brought out was not going to be $11. My partner got the torta sandwich (which was extremely soggy ) and it comes with one side. He picked the roasted potatoes when we got the bill back it said we had an up charge for his side. I also asked her about that and she responded " Oh yeah, there's an up charge on that particular side." she did not inform us of this information either. When we got home from dinner, we were informed by another couple that went to the restaurant a night prior, and had the same waitress and complained of the same issues. The service really ruined our night but the food tasted good.

Disappointed. I'd say you're paying for the location and ambience vs the service and taste of the food. We were a party of two with reservation who waited almost an hour for our food. Shrimp Churrasco w/potatoes, a side of elote, shrimp, chicken and steak fajita plate w/black beans and one pork belly escabeche taco. All of the food was subpar. Each dish lacked salt and was highly greasy and/or burnt. We also ordered our favorite drinks (Paloma and an old fashioned) The Paloma taste like lime soda water and the old fashioned was entirely too sweet. Our waitress rarely checked on us and never apologized about the long wait for our food. She also was surprised when we mentioned we were still waiting on our sides. There were 4 other couples who arrived after us and all received their food before us. 2 of the tables belonged to another waitress who we watched run circles around our waitress. If we had time we would've sent our drinks back and perhaps asked for our dishes to be remade (hold the oil and extra burnt pieces) but we had tickets for 8pm at another establishment. We were extremely disappointed and surprised that anyone would pay over $100 for the food/service we received. My friend was overly generous by tipping $10, I on the other hand wouldn't have given anything. Training is needed. Now if you don't mind a quick 15-20 minute ride. I'd highly recommend El Paso on Sherwood Forest. For a fraction of the price, way better food, service and the drinks are amazing!

I loved my service and food I dined at the bar and had the bartender/ server Silva . She was a great server and made sure our lunch went smooth and understood the menu. She even let us taste some of the frozen drinks ! Modesto is cute and chic and has a Spanish American flair to the decor . Would dine here again

Being from Baton Rouge but now a resident of San Diego, CA. I think the flavors and textures were not consistent with authentic Mexican American cuisine. The location seems as if it has potential to be great. Near LSU's campus therefore, steady traffic is not a problem. I got an opportunity to watch soccer... Service was nice and knowledgeable....

Tacos rice beans chips and salsa and the berry margarita

The tacos where good I had a steak a lil chewy but flavor and shrimp it was tasty rice on point beans standard berry Rita best thing I'll go back during the crossover of lunch and happy hour great deal if you dine between the hours of 2pm-6pm

The service was amazing. This was our first visit and our waiter was extremely attentive. I thought the food was okay, but I guess I didn't order correctly because everyone else enjoyed their food. It's a nice spot, with nice decor and we'd return again.

My friend and I got tacos on Cinco de Mayo. They were pretty good! I enjoyed the food. It wasn't extraordinary but if you're looking for a relaxing spot to eat and maybe get a margarita, this is a good spot. The service was fine! The we were seated fairly quickly (we sat at the bar since there was a 30 minute wait). There was a slight mistake with my order but it was minor (the wrong type of taco shell). I liked that the food seemed authentic. The music and ambiance is what you'd expect for a place like this. Clean, simple, etc. There was a patio but we didn't get to sit out there.

Ask the Community - Modesto Tacos Tequila Whiskey

Where can I find warm tortilla meaty authentic tex-mex style tacos.?

From what I understand, Modesto focuses less on Tex-mex and more on authentic Mexican cuisine. However, all of their tacos are served on warm, handmade tortillas. You can choose whether you'd like flour, corn, or hard shell.

yes, you can make a reservation and it's better if you do so! If not, you'll probably have to wait

I wasn't looking for anything specific to eat but this place called to me so I whipped into the parking lot and headed in! This is such a homey type of place that puts a lot of pride and joy in their food and showing off Latin culture. Los Alvarez Exxpress Latin Food is a local mom and pop spot on the corner of Gardere and Burbank next to the S&P Food Store/Chevron gas station. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect going in but what I got was a lot of warmth and comfort. This is a place for Latin locals to relax and get a bit of familiarity and good food. I dined in and ordered the Granadas Catrachas. Catrachas are traditionally known as Honduran tostadas. Los Alvarez puts their spin on it by using Granada flour to create a puff pocket and stuff it with meat, rice and cheese and serve it with encurtido (Honduran pickled vegetables). I ordered one with chicken and one with beef. The serving was huge and absolutely delicious! I was only able to eat one. That, on top of the chips and salsa and black bean dip had me full for the rest of the day! Everyone that works there is friendly and for a second you don't feel like you're in Baton Rouge. This is a magical place.

I haven't been here for at least seven maybe possibly 10 years since Renee Ortlieb was the owner…read more The reason I came back to try it today was because after a visit to La Mexicana a few days ago only to learn it has closed (and it had become my staple for the area of authentic Mexican). To my surprise, la Tienda Latina is a Honduran restaurant. To my taste Honduran food is blander then real Mexican food. After reading the reviews, I ordered a Mexican coke and an appetizer while I looked at the menu. The friendly English speaking waitress brought salsa and chips to the table, along with my Coke and ample sized appetizer. Shortly after she returned with the Honduran tamale ( chose pork vs chicken). She also brought two condiment bottles of homemade sauces, both green tomatillo and red chili .. both very standard at authentic places. The salsa and chips were nice and fresh tasting and I particularly liked the green sauce with the tamale sauce. Realizing how much food this was already I decided just to order a side of refried beans and some Mexican Crema, which was actually perfect, and I had food to bring home because I only ate half of the tamale and about a fourth of the beans which were delicious. The tamale did need extra flavor although it was packed with potatoes and rice and chunks of cooked roast type pork, and a few peas I think. For the price I think it's quite a bargain to fill up on. However, I filled up quickly by drinking a second Mexican Coke, and had an extra order of the salsa with the chips. I dipped the chips in the beans which were absolutely probably my favorite dish of all. La Tienda won't replace the flavors and menu formerly offered at La Mexicana. I'll have to find another place that has similar type food, but I did enjoy my experience here. However Hondorian food isn't what I get cravings for. Yet, the restaurant was tidy and clean, although I didn't go to the restroom, which is always very telling of how clean a restaurant is. Btw, I know Mexican cokes are usually very pricey, but the idea of paying eight dollars for two medium (quantity) cokes is annoying, but the price of on tap cold drinks has gone up significantly as well around the Baton Rouge area, so often I just have to order water in order to enjoy a sit down meal eating out without paying a total cost of what I used to consider to be premium dinner time treat when I'm just looking for a quick afternoon lunch. Due to my budget lunch (appetizer & 2 sides) selection today I went ahead & ordered a 2nd bottle, and quite enjoyed it, and therefore I have leftovers to enjoy later. I will keep reading other food reviews made here so I can return again and try something else and just maybe I'll find a new favorite!
