What a gem! After a few days of Cajun food, my friend and I wanted to switch up the flavors a bit and she took me to her favorite local Indian spot, Swagat. We came by on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't too crowded at all, only a couple other tables. We shared the samosas which were good but not great. They weren't bad just didn't blow me away. I also ordered the chili chicken I've usually had Sichuan style so I didn't know it would come in sauce but it was really good! Not too spicy. For my main I got the malai kofta and paired it with the paratha. Everything was so flavorful and fresh. The dumplings were perfectly spiced and soft. The buttery paratha paired so well with the rich sauce. It also made enough for leftovers the next day which I always love. Not in the area often but highly recommend to anyone who is! read more

The food was delicious! The honey chili cauliflower was absolutely amazing. It was crunchy and delightful. The most popular dishes were good as well. I will say, it is quite hard to distinguish the butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. The flavor profile was almost the same. If you never had Indian food before, it is quite sweet and creamy but delicious overall. The chicken shahi korma was good but not so memorable in my opinion. There have been numerous changes for Swagat since the pandemic, which includes new ownership and staff, the dismantling of their once-popular buffet, and a complete renovation of their interior space. It has essentially become a different restaurant with the same name -- one that has become synonymous with city's top dining experience. (#1) The good news is that the food is still tasty, the service is quite good, and the business remains as fruitful as ever. The interior is spacious and well-lit, with a nice balance of natural light with windows around the dining room and spotlighting throughout the space. It's extra group-friendly and the surrounding parking lot adds a lot to its convenience. Even the restrooms are in great shape, which always gets a thumbs up from yours truly. As always, the food is the star of the show. The vindaloo here has an extra kick that spicelords will love, and I still have a fondness for their sag paneer, hearty lamb biriyani, and mango lassis. They tend to push the chicken 65 + chicken 555 a lot, both of which are tasty options. I also appreciate that there is a visible (and flavorful) difference between their butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. While I'm not the biggest fan of their noodles, I am very appreciative they offer more than hakka noodles. Their masala noodles come with chicken, vegetable, or egg and range from $14-16 each. I also like that they have have an extensive selection of goat / lamb options as well as a variety of dosas. Whether it's on the phone or dining in, the service has always been on point. They have made good recommendations, are patient with Indian cuisine novices, and are diligent about ensuring a quality experience for all. I don't leave many reviews, but this place deserves and earns it! Tonight I just wanted to not only speak on the food but how kind the people are. I came tonight with my husband and our two little daughters, 4 and 1. For some reason, my 4 year old immediately liked the waitress and decided she wanted to play tag. The hostess played along and played tag with her and the other gentleman who came around to check on us was playing peek a boo with my little one, and he is her new favorite person. Besides the friendly atmosphere, you really can't go wrong with this food. We live in another parish but go out of our way to eat here. As always, everything was piping hot, fresh and delicious. If you like Chicken 65, and want to try something besides Butter Chicken (all delicious here).. don't sleep on the Special Chicken Biryani! It's exactly the same taste and quality as the bbq Gunpowder Chicken Biryani and I live closer to Swagat. The owner said the owner of Gunpowder is from the same city in India. I like the Indian Spicy heat level and it's not overly hot but it can be made mild. It is chicken chunks cooked in tangy red curry spices & comes with a side of Naan & small cup of cooling Indian house-made Raita (yoghurt, cucumber, carrot & spices), sliced purple onions & lemon wedge. Being from the Houston area where there are a plethora of really good Indian cuisine restaurants, I found Swagat in Baton Rouge to be pretty good Indian food. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and my wife ordered Buttered Chicken. Both dishes had just a hint of sweet that I could not quite place. I've never had CTM taste this way. It wasn't bad, just different. As far as spice level goes, they prepare their food at four different spice levels. She ordered mild (1). I ordered spicy (3). I can say the leap between level 2 and level 3 is substantial. I'll also say I am WAY too fair complected to even attempt level 4. I'd hate to think how fast raging IBS would kick in if I did that. Yes, I went there! IYKYK. And if you DO KNOW, why are you laughing right now? Conveniently located not too far off I-12 in Baton Rouge. On the east side of BR. Bottom line - Pretty good Indian food. This was a perfect 'snow day' surprise! We called to make sure they were open as most places were closed and due to our diet restrictions (vegetarian) the options were even more limited. I'm very pleased with the service, food and location. The staff were kind and welcoming. Hari was such an attentive, kind and wonderful waiter! We enjoyed each of our dishes. Very tastyy. I had the goat rhogan gosht which was lovely. I would've preferred it not be on the bone (it's hard to pick them out) but the flavor was wonderful. The best thing I ordered was the onion bhaji. They were great. It's a simple dish but the coating was SO crispy. I ate the whole plate of them myself! My son and I had a late lunch here. We were expecting a buffet as that's what we searched up however, we were not disappointed at all. The folks were friendly and welcoming from the moment we walked in. We ordered two appetizers, cauliflower dish called Gobi 65 on their menu and chili paneer. both were very tasty and arrived very quickly. For our meals, my son had vindaloo chicken, and he ordered the level 4 spice, called, The Indian level. the guys questioned he could handle it and laughed when he insisted. I ordered butter chicken and lamb saag, both level 3 heat. All of the food arrived quickly with rice and garlic naan. OMG! all three dishes were amazing. My favorite was the lamb saag. the creamy spinach and the stewed lamb, was just delicious. The butter chicken was spicy enough and full of flavor, and there was something sweet in the sauce. My son, he did very well handling the level 4 spice! His dish, the chicken vindaloo was great and it was spicy! the portions were so large, we brought enough food home for the next couple days. I've eaten here a few times over the years but had to leave a review after our most recent visit which was fantastic. The food is fresh and delicious, and portion sizes are generous. All of the staff here are lovely and you can tell they really strive to make it a great dining experience. Our server, Hari, was quick and attentive. He always checked to make sure our drinks were full and we had everything we needed, even when the restaurant got pretty busy about halfway through our meal. Swagat Indian restaurant is the best Indian in town and maybe Louisiana. From what I have heard, as i have never been to India, it is also the most authentic in town as well. I believe in trying a place at least three times before facing strong opinion of it, so I tried this place four times. Throughout my times coming, I have gotten the Aloo Tiki (pictured below), Samosa Chaat, Chicken 65 (pictured below), Chicken tikki masala, fish curry, and the cheese naan bread. All of which are delicious. Food here is not always spicy and you can adjust hotness to your taste but expect it to be full of flavor. The waiter Harry is awesome! Swagat Indian Cuisine is a Baton Rouge staple that has been around for a while. The building of Swagat very much resembled an old-school pizza hut back when it had a buffet. I remember coming here pre-COVID and enjoying the food, so coming back five years later, I expected the same. I ordered the Lamb Chops, which I had never gotten before, but based on the Yelp photos of other reviewers who ordered this dish and praised it, I had very high expectations. Once my lamb chops arrived it looked appetizing but not that large of a portion. I counted three lamb chops, which are on the sparse side. The seasoning and spice were fine but the lamb chops were overcooked by a bit. I took the chops off the hot plate as soon as they came out and was still met with overcooked meat, if not for the flavor and seasoning it would've been a complete mess. My friends ordered the goat curry along with the chicken tikka masala both of which were great but as for my dish, it was severely lacking portion-wise. Let's just say I left still hungry but overall I would say the whole experience was ok. The service was superb as the servers were very friendly and gave great recommendations but the dish I got was the main miss of the night. read more
