Let me start by saying I am very biased when it comes to Mexican cuisine after living in Southern California for 15 years and having spent a lot of time in Mexico. Mexican food is one of my favorites and I am an unabashed snob. Since moving back to CT I have struggled to find good Mexican, and it looks like La Catrina May have answered the call! Recently had dinner with our neighbors, one of which has a litany of food restrictions. I was nervous that there wouldn't be much for her to eat when they agreed to try La Catrina with my wife and I, but I was wrong. Our waitress was very patient and helpful in directing our friend to a number of dishes that would be ok for her to eat. The kitchen was also very accommodating in tailoring her food to ensure her needs were met making her meal and experience all the more enjoyable. As for me, I dove right in and started off with some guacamole which was fresh, creamy, and very enjoyable. I then moved on to a bowl of pozole which was very authentic w/ hominy and a very nice broth. For my main course, I went with the Barbacoa Des Rey. Very good and again authentic. Served with rice and beans with a side of fresh corn tortillas. Finished the night w/ Dulce de Leche and an order of Churros. The Churros were enjoyable, however, the Dulce de Leche was a show stopper. Huge portion and extremely decadent. One of the better that I have had. While I do not drink, my wife and neighbors ordered some of La Catrinas signature cocktails and were extremely happy with them. There is a large bar and the restaurant has weekly entertainment to give the restaurant a night life vibe. We really enjoyed our dining experience at La Catrina. The food was authentic Mexican and excellent. Drinks were solid and desserts were a big hit. Service was outstanding. Looking forward to coming back to our New Mexican go-to so I can dive deeper into the menu that includes the regional dishes I have come to love from my time in Cali and Mexico. Especially looking forward to the Cochinita Pibil. If you are in the Southington area and looking to experience authentic Mexican, La Catrina is the place to be! We're from out of town and picked this place based on reviews. Start with the positives: friendly staff, cute decor. My husband enjoyed his pork dish. Negatives: salsa was bland, chips were too hard. My birria taquitos (because they were out of barbacoca) was dry and bland. My habanero wings tasted like buffalo, so I think they got my order wrong. My daughter's rice was mushy, the fries were limp. (Yes I know we ordered untraditional fare, it's what sounded good based on what they offered) I was caught off guard because they had good reviews but I should've known something was wrong because they were empty at 6pm on a Friday. read more

It was our first time trying this restaurant after always driving past it. Service was great and ambiance was as well - cute decor! The nachos were really good, definitely our favorite and the price wasn't bad for $11. My husband and I split the shrimp fajitas and overall found them to be really salty. The side of rice and beans wasn't very flavorful but we were happy to see how much shrimp came in one order. Definitely enough for 2. Stopped in for a drink while waiting for an appointment. Staff was friendly and very kind. Salsa is really great. While I just had a drink with chips and salsa, I will be back. They have a Mexican ramen on the menu which I think is super fun and will be back to try it! Menu is fun and they do event nights, so check the website. Chips and salsa were great and I had the for 3" tacos and my husband had the 6" tacos. They were all good but we liked the carnitas the best. I would have give 4 stars but deducted one because it felt like we were being nickel and dimed. They charge for refills of fountain soda which is uncommon. Also they charge for cheese (I think it was 1.25 for a small cup of shredded cheese) and for pico (I believe it was 2.99 for a small cup that they called a "side"). Maybe it said it on the menu but I didn't see it and the waitress worded the question "would you like cheese or pico with your tacos?" It was not worth the $4.24 up charge for toppings to my tacos. read more

Great decor, super friendly staff and owners that really care about their customers. They only drop a star because of how expensive things are, though maybe $22 for fajitas is the new norm? I didn't get a drink because it was double the price of the place we usually go. So we split a steak fajita for dinner and an order of churros for dessert. The food was excellent and we'll definitely be going back. This is definitely our 2nd favorite local place and may become our first because of how close to Cheshire it is. read more

Shout out to La Catrina for having the most delicious, fresh and authentic Mexican food!! I went there with my family last evening to celebrate my birthday. We sat outside on an absolutely beautiful night, while inside there were many happy feet dancing salsa, bachata and merengue . Our server was a young, tall, male whose name I regret not catching. He was attentive, thorough and gracious--even when I told him I ordered a burrito bowl and not a burrito. I apologize to you...in hindsight, I think I didn't say "bowl!" Went to the preview week opening night of this new restaurant on Meriden Waterbury Tpke in Southington. The vibes and decor are amazing. The margaritas were a little too orangey but were pretty massive. The guacamole is the best in town 100% and the warm chips were perfect with it. The fajitas were tasty, just wish there was more meat for the price! The enchiladas were AWESOME. You can just tell how fresh and homemade the tortillas are and the chicken inside was perfect. I will start by saying this place has SO much potential and I'm really hoping it just gets better and better. The decor is adorable. Live plants everywhere that I hope they do a good job of managing (ie keeping alive) because it really adds to the vibe. Huge lovely bar! Their drink menu is amazing but I'm sad to say my drink didn't taste amazing. And they were EXPENSIVE (like NYC bar expensive). I paid $16 for a tequila drink with grapefruit juice and lime juice with an 'edible' tamarind straw. Hubs said his margarita was fine. For dinner - we got the nachos to start which were delicious. We also tried the queso - untraditional but decent. For dinner - I got the fajitas. The chicken was tasteless. The onions and peppers were delicious and so were the little tortillas served with it. They charge an extra $5 for a side of cheese, sour cream and quac which is ridiculous - esp with the fajitas (which should come with all that.). My husband had the barbacao de res - he thought it was good. The prices are high for what you get. Maybe I'd give the food 3.5 stars. The decor is a 5 - love the inside vibe. Hopefully they keep working on the food/drinks. We are HUGE Salsa's fans so they'll have to work a bit harder to win us over. read more

I was a little leery about going here after reading some of the reviews. service was good. the first basket of chips were free the second coast 2.50 Really? my to companions ordered quesadillas which they said were good. I ordered steak fajitas and was not impressed. the skillet was warm no sizzle. the meat was a little tough and I have my doubts that it was carne asada. sides I.e sour cream and grated cheese were extra and the portions were small. I hate getting nickel and dimed. If you like the authentic flavors of Mexico, this is the place. However, if you like the American version of Mexican taste, then stick to the "out-of-the-box" eateries. No, understand, I am also not saying that Rick Bayless himself is in the back whipping up dishes, I'm just saying that it is a delicious Mexican meal. BTW... On a side note...the chef-owner lived in Mexico for many years with his wife, with whom he met there. That is how they understand and have practiced the art of Mexican flavors. We love Mexican food, so we tried La Catrina for the first time tonight and thought it was pretty good. We loved the rustic, cozy atmosphere and decor. We each had a drink. Hubby had a lime margarita and I had a Coconut Mojito MOCK-tail. The drinks were tasty, but when the check came, I was surprised that they charged me for a regular Coconut Mojito WITH liquor! I asked the waitress if that was an error, but she said "no, we charge the same whether they have alcohol or not"! I have never paid the same for a mocktail as for an alcoholic cocktail anywhere before! The guacamole, chips and salsa were fresh and tasty. For our meals, my husband had the Enchiladas de Mole and I had the Fajitas. I thought my Fajitas were delicious and tasty. Hubby said the Enchiladas de Mole was okay, but not exciting. I tasted his meal and didn't like it, however ... I had tried mole once before years ago at a different restaurant, and I didn't like it then either, (so maybe I just don't like Mole sauce & maybe he isn't crazy about it, either). Our waitress was pleasant and attentive, although she was the only person there besides the owners, so she had to be bartender, waitress and busboy. If I could give 0 stars I would. Margaritas are a big glass of orange juice. Was there for an 1 1/2 hours and still didnt get our dinner. We left (offered to pay for the big OJ but they comped). I would have posted a pic but didn't receive our food. I understand the quirks with opening a new restaurant. Food running out, long wait times..it happens. But when the waitress tells you your food is coming out and you have to wait another 45 minutes along with ghosting you...not a good look. Too bad, we love to support local. read more

margarita's and mojitos were good. Fish tacos were really good; quesadillas were ok. Guacamole was good. Their house-made hot sauce was really good. The decor/ambiance is really cool. The bartender provided good service and was cool. We went on a Sunday afternoon and they were playing 80s jams I liked that. This spot has a lot of potential. They should offer a weekend brunch with a DJ or Live music; the layout would permit and it has a cool vibe already. If they had music nights there too we'd definitely go for drinks and music. This was my first time at this establishment and I won't be returning. My friends and I were looking for a local Mexican spot, and one friend always drove by here and wanted to try it so we went last night. When my friend first called, they told her you needed a reservation, so we made one. When we walked in the door, there was only one other table besides us, so we were unsure why reservations were mandatory while there was hardly anyone there. The waitress came over and took our drinks orders. I asked if they had watermelon margaritas and she had this puzzled look on her face and stated she wasn't sure but she can ask. My friends and I ordered all 3 strawberry margaritas. Drinks came out and they were great. Hence why they at least got one star from me. We all ordered apps and then our food. We asked her if we can order individual fish or shrimp tacos. She stated she would have to go ask. She came back and said yes, they would be $3.99 each. We stated we were okay with this and added it to our order. Not even 5 minutes later, she states she couldn't do it. (At this point, we are all confused). The apps came out with the food (which we were wondering where they were). My friend ordered the Birria Ramen. Before she could even eat it, she stated it smelt weird and then she still tried it and didn't like it. We stated that she didn't like it and then asked if she could order something else. She asked for Buffalo wings instead. The steak and chicken from the tacos did not have any flavor. They were completely dry and overcooked. When my friends wings came out, there was absolutely no sauce on them, but the waitress insisted they was Buffalo (the mild wings were sucked but the buffalo weren't?). When were were semi done- she brought over the check and boxes. She was gone for quite a while. We saw her sitting at the bar, speaking to another employee from the restaurant. She finally came over and stated "you guys could've called me over". I was appalled. I shouldn't have to call you over to pay my bill. It's your job to come to us, and check on us every so often. Some guy also came over to check on us. Unfortunately, we just wanted to get out of there and we told him we were fine. We were not satisfied and will not be returning here. read more

Visited on May 5, 2024 mid afternoon. It was not busy at all Maybe 4 tables and a couple people sitting at the bar. Ordered two drinks and a plate of nachos which we both have had several times. Upon trying them we noticed there was very little if any cheese. When waitress came to check on us we told her and she said "I agree...I dont see cheese...I have will have kitchen make you a new platter". 10 Minutes later she came out and gave us the same plate of nachos stirred and mixed up into a mess and covered and soaked in a orange cheese sauce. She called it "queso". It was not what we asked for. We asked for the platter to be made the way it is on menu and how we have had it several times. It was disgusting and not at all what is advertised on menu. The whole atmosphere of staff was hurry up and finish your meal. We felt rushed the entire time even though very few people in restaurant. We left message for Manager and no one ever reached out. There are other restaurants up the street that are so much better with fresh food and great staff. read more

We ordered the guacamole, which was delicious, the hubs had chilaquiles, and I had the cochinita pibil. Everything was so good! After seeing the posts on IG I had to check it out. Everything was amazing .... The drinks, good and staff!! The la catrina margarita comes out encased in smoke. I loved the hibiscus marg too. They even made a mock tail marg for my pregnant sister. The guac was sooooo good. It was silky smooth and had the best flavor to it. Everything was so fresh including the flan and churros .
