Shredded beef tacos that were very greasy
    Renee A.

Nice place! We were a bit early for salsa dancing, but maybe next time! LOL chops and salsa were good, definitely didn't seem like jar salsa. The meal was meh. Just ok. We shared churros for dessert that were mushy in the middle and the dipping sauce was cold and hard. Unfortunately I'd say I have to pass on trying it again, sorry.

    Dulce de Leche. Soooo good!

Let me start by saying I am very biased when it comes to Mexican cuisine after living in Southern California for 15 years and having spent a lot of time in Mexico. Mexican food is one of my favorites and I am an unabashed snob. Since moving back to CT I have struggled to find good Mexican, and it looks like La Catrina May have answered the call! Recently had dinner with our neighbors, one of which has a litany of food restrictions. I was nervous that there wouldn't be much for her to eat when they agreed to try La Catrina with my wife and I, but I was wrong. Our waitress was very patient and helpful in directing our friend to a number of dishes that would be ok for her to eat. The kitchen was also very accommodating in tailoring her food to ensure her needs were met making her meal and experience all the more enjoyable. As for me, I dove right in and started off with some guacamole which was fresh, creamy, and very enjoyable. I then moved on to a bowl of pozole which was very authentic w/ hominy and a very nice broth. For my main course, I went with the Barbacoa Des Rey. Very good and again authentic. Served with rice and beans with a side of fresh corn tortillas. Finished the night w/ Dulce de Leche and an order of Churros. The Churros were enjoyable, however, the Dulce de Leche was a show stopper. Huge portion and extremely decadent. One of the better that I have had. While I do not drink, my wife and neighbors ordered some of La Catrinas signature cocktails and were extremely happy with them. There is a large bar and the restaurant has weekly entertainment to give the restaurant a night life vibe. We really enjoyed our dining experience at La Catrina. The food was authentic Mexican and excellent. Drinks were solid and desserts were a big hit. Service was outstanding. Looking forward to coming back to our New Mexican go-to so I can dive deeper into the menu that includes the regional dishes I have come to love from my time in Cali and Mexico. Especially looking forward to the Cochinita Pibil. If you are in the Southington area and looking to experience authentic Mexican, La Catrina is the place to be! Side note: My wife wanted me to mention how much she loved the enchiladas mole!

Fajitas and the rice and beans that come with it.

Great decor, super friendly staff and owners that really care about their customers. They only drop a star because of how expensive things are, though maybe $22 for fajitas is the new norm? I didn't get a drink because it was double the price of the place we usually go. So we split a steak fajita for dinner and an order of churros for dessert. The food was excellent and we'll definitely be going back. This is definitely our 2nd favorite local place and may become our first because of how close to Cheshire it is.

Went to the preview week opening night of this new restaurant on Meriden Waterbury Tpke in Southington. The vibes and decor are amazing. The margaritas were a little too orangey but were pretty massive. The guacamole is the best in town 100% and the warm chips were perfect with it. The fajitas were tasty, just wish there was more meat for the price! The enchiladas were AWESOME. You can just tell how fresh and homemade the tortillas are and the chicken inside was perfect. The sauce had a little kick to it too. Excited to see this restaurant grow and go back to try some new dishes in a few weeks

Awesome service at this comfy local spot. The drinks were delicious and the food came out very quickly. The aesthetic is very fresh and clean, with lots of color and plants. This was our first visit and we will definitely return.

Nice place not busy at all. Tried going to another place and were turned away with an hour wait. Ended up here not disappointed. The food was tasty but my dish would have been much better as a fresh cool summer dish. I will certainly return to the place.

We love Mexican food, so we tried La Catrina for the first time tonight and thought it was pretty good. We loved the rustic, cozy atmosphere and decor. We each had a drink. Hubby had a lime margarita and I had a Coconut Mojito MOCK-tail. The drinks were tasty, but when the check came, I was surprised that they charged me for a regular Coconut Mojito WITH liquor! I asked the waitress if that was an error, but she said "no, we charge the same whether they have alcohol or not"! I have never paid the same for a mocktail as for an alcoholic cocktail anywhere before! The guacamole, chips and salsa were fresh and tasty. For our meals, my husband had the Enchiladas de Mole and I had the Fajitas. I thought my Fajitas were delicious and tasty. Hubby said the Enchiladas de Mole was okay, but not exciting. I tasted his meal and didn't like it, however ... I had tried mole once before years ago at a different restaurant, and I didn't like it then either, (so maybe I just don't like Mole sauce & maybe he isn't crazy about it, either). Our waitress was pleasant and attentive, although she was the only person there besides the owners, so she had to be bartender, waitress and busboy. She was super busy running around trying to do it all herself. The portions were large, so we had enough to bring home for another meal. We were too full to eat dessert, so we ordered it to go. We got the Flan and the Churros, but haven't eaten them yet, so will have to update later!

Okay, so at first, I wasn't planning to write any more reviews for the foreseeable future. Just…read morebecause I wrote one review recently didn't quite mean I was warmed back up to Yelp just yet, and if I'm being honest, I'm still not. Between a removed review causing me to go missing from Yelp for 6 months and losing my trust in posting my reviews here on Yelp, I let go of my Elite status and am now back to square one. But after driving my mom to Manor Inn so she could attend an event there, I decided to look up spots around there since I did spot that their wait times were going to be extensive. That's when I decided to go here and see what was good. Honestly, after I encountered the parking situations in both places and went into the restaurant, I knew I had made the right call. I was seated immediately, given a menu, and even given some complimentary chips, salsa, and a plate of refried beans sprinkled with some cheese. Now, refried beans and salsa are not foods I would normally eat because my food palette don't usually like those items. But with these tortilla chips, they were both very flavorful, and given this was complimentary, they were all the more appetizing. I should also mention that my waitress, Sayda, was very nice and prompt whenever she came to my table. Answered any questions I had, and had no problem with my orders. So from the menu, I went with the Tropical Twist, their Calamari for an appetizer, the tacos de barrio for dinner, and even ordered churros to go so I have something for when Winter Storm Fern dumps 80 million inches of snow tomorrow and into the next day. Oh, might I say, everything was delicious! I knew I couldn't have alcohol because I still had to pick my mom back up and then drive back home to Waterbury, but that Tropical Twist was a nice consolation if you can't have alcohol. The fried calamari was also another great choice. That dip it came with was so addictive it was like crack, and the perfect thing to pair with fried calamari. If there's one thing I would say could be improved, it's that they could be just a smidge more liberal with the fried coating. There were some pieces that had some small spots that had no coating at all, but nothing too major. For the tacos, MMM MMM GOOD! The meat was tender and flavorful, the presentation was great, and the consome paired deliciously with the tacos. It's definitely worth the $20 they cost. The churros were also pretty good. I can't say they were the best churros I ever had because the place that made my favorite churros ever closed down back in 2024 and had since become a dog grooming place, but if not for that, then I might make a case for that statement to be true. The chocolate syrup it comes with is divine and a nice sweet treat to finish off the night. I was in and out of the place in maybe a slight smidge above half an hour, so I would say all-in-all I'm glad I came. The place is also well decorated, bathrooms are clean, and the ambiance is inviting and casual. Now, I may still need to gatekeep a few reviews here and there, but this place was a step in the right direction in getting my confidence back in Yelp. I would definitely come back here again whenever I get a chance, and I highly recommend coming to check out this place if you're in the area. Oh, and for comparison's sake, it was an hour and a half between when I was finished here and when I could finally pick my mom back up again from Manor Inn. Take that as you will.

I called ahead to make sure they made their own michelada mix, which did not disappoint. It was more on the tangier side but delicious nonetheless. I got their chicken mole which came with white rice, different than any other mole dishes I've had before. Their white rice was some of the best I've ever had- to say the least. The refried beans were delicious (they served me tortilla chips with salsa and refried beans as soon as I sat down). The mole was a good sauce, certainly on the spicier side - hot and strong spice favor. Everything was good, I could see myself going back for a michelada and trying other things off their menu next time. I definitely won't pass up on their in restaurant fried tortilla chips, that's for sure, they were delicious. Thank you Loteria!

Smooth, refreshing, and packed with flavor without being overly sweet. For the main event, we ordered a variety of tacos including the al pastor, chorizo, and lengua. Each one brought something different to the table, but all of them shared the same thing: incredible flavor and quality ingredients.
