Upscale tacos done right Came here because we are always on the hunt for good tacos. The location is right off the highway on the back of the xerox building. There's signs for parking but they are somewhat small so you need to keep an eye out for their logo. You're greeted with a very fancy food truck with servers and plenty of outdoor seating. There's some outdoor loungers and and some lawn games. The view was great, overlooking the river and with plenty of greenery. Our server was very friendly and chatty. Missus and her chatted and had good banter. Our server only had another couple servers helping, which got overwhelming for their team by the time we left. We got aqua fresca for drinks, the chips and salsa for the table, 4 tacos to share, and the street corn brule. Everything came out around the same time, which took them a little while but they got everything out. The street corn was fresh, used local corn and had the right blend of mole, queso fresco, and spices to make it a cheesy, spicy, corn forward dip. The chips and salsa for the table was also prepped fresh. The fine dice on the salsa let one get a good scoop of all the elements into one bite. The vinegar forward salsa was well balanced and seasoned. The chips were recently fried, and lightly salted. The tacos were also done well. Each taco were about 5 to 6 bites, all the ingredients were treated with care and layered to give the best bite. The fish taco and their take on a Birra taco were the highlights. Fish was crispy, paired with a spicy aoli and fresh corn. The Birra taco was not dunked nor came with au jus but it did have very tender smoked beef with avocado cream and plenty of onions. The wild mushroom had a lot of umami and complexity. It was a stellar non-meat taco but was overshadowed by its heavy hitter cousins. The carne asada taco was treated well, grilled properly and paired with just enough toppings to keep things interesting. The meat needed to be cubed though, was a very messy bite because of the beef lardons. The price was high, but the quality of the food justified the price. If I spend 8 bucks for a single taco, I want the bite to be balanced and flavorful, the quantity to be reasonable, and the end product to show that some thought and care was put into the dish presented. This is not a taco truck on the side of the road offering three buck tacos with fresh stewed beef and red onion (my kingdom for that type of taco truck in ct!). This is Americanized, curated, fancy-fied taco creations that taste great, look good, and fill you up. Now the food.... The vibe was so amazing we literally said "I really hope the food is good" and it did not disappoint. Now I will say if you are expecting a $3 food truck taco this is not your place. This is high quality ingredients with high quality experienced chefs executing on point. Every detail of every bite was well thought out and executed. The knife work on the salsa alone was impressive. For the food quality and execution the price point is acceptable. But like I said don't expect a $3 food truck taco. The menu is creative, featuring mexican and Caribbean fusion dishes. However, there were some issues with the sizing of appetizers, execution and timing of meals, and flavor. I went with my family. I ordered the wild mushroom quesadilla, my husband got the hamburger, we split a ceviche, and my parents split a few small plates. My quesadilla was creative with a different flavor. It was unfortunately, a little salty and the flavor felt kind of flat, with it getting boring after a while. The small plates were very tiny and could only be shared with two people, despite their high price -- for example, the empanada plate came with only 2. Our service was great, friendly, and attentive. However, there were some issues with execution and timing of the dishes. My quesadilla came out at least 15 minutes before my husband's burger. This made it difficult to eat our meals in the same time. Our ceviche was also intended as an appetizer, but I didn't get it until long after my quesadilla. We tried the churro doughnuts, which were delicious. It was an order of 2 big ones, which tasted fresh and warm. As you follow your GPS to 100 Great Meadow Road, you may wonder if you input the wrong address, or if your GPS was under the influence of demons, because as you approach the address, you sure don't seem to be near any restaurant at all. Instead, what you'll see is a big office building (seven stories tall in one section) known as Putnam Park (aka the CBS Building). So, trust your GPS, be brave about it, walk up the office building stairs, enter the massive atrium of Putnam Park, stay to your right, and you'll soon see a hostess station for a very cool Mexican restaurant. The space you see by that hostess station has a jungle décor with a pink neon sign that proclaims, "Feed me Tacos and Tell Me I'm Pretty." The dining space seats 50 or so during the cold winter months. They have a warm weather outdoor space (with a great view of the Connecticut River) that can accommodate up to 120. Their menu includes a salsa flight, nachos, empanadas, chicharrónes and Yucca fries for appetizers, six taco choices, three burrito choices, four "mains", five sides, and a children's cheese quesadilla. A charitable organization I belong to held a board of directors meeting here Thursday night, and the five of us all left very impressed with their food quality and pricing. I started off with one of their cocktails, an Are You Red-Dy Sangria ($10) with dark rum, Pinot Noir, Orange juice, and Blood Orange puree. It was excellent. Their tacos were priced on an individual a la carte basis between $6 and $7. These are not your Americanized tacos on a crunchy shell with lettuce and tomato. They're the California style "street" taco served open faced on a soft tortilla. I went with a Baja Cod taco ($7) served with slaw, pico, and a cilantro lime aioli, a Baja shrimp taco ($6.50) with grilled sliced jumbo shrimp, slaw, pico, a drizzle of barbecue sauce and Cotija cheese. I also ordered a side of Mexican rice $5. Everything was terrific. The tacos had plenty of flavor and contrasting textures, and the rice was great - a big portion with just enough zip to keep it from being ordinary. There were some service delays in getting one of our drinks, so it was comped, and one of our dinners was late in arriving, so a free drink was added in. But overall, service was good with numerous checkbacks on the food and beverages from our server and the manager. Most importantly, the food was terrific. In an office building is a cute lil spot for tequila and tacos. Start off with some cocktails.... Definitely love the sweet and spicy strawberry. Margarita. Can never go wrong with a traditional margarita as well. I love the starters that they had. Can never go wrong with nachos, chicken chili nachosssss chips and salsa. Also chips dipped into fresh guacamole hits the spot. My personal fave was the chiccaronnes. Beautifully seasoned and cooked. The yucca fries are something to check out as well. The customer service at Tequila was exceptional. Super kind workers and they frequently check in to ensure that you have a great dining experience. Regarding their tacos, I was able to try most of their selection, including carnitas, chicken mole, shrimp diablo (marked as spicy on the menu), Rio Baja (cod), birria, and arrachera steak. Overall the tacos were nothing to write home about, did not have that true Mexican flavor to me. The tacos that were noted as spicy did not have any kick to them - and my tolerance for spice is on the lower side. However, their guacamole was incredible, and their chips were perfectly salted. Margaritas were great. The chicken chili nachos were delicious. Dessert was my favorite part - their "Hot Chocolate Lava Cake" with vanilla ice cream was to die for. I originally planned to dine at River: A Waterftont. When we were seated, we noticed Mexican umbrellas downstairs. Suddenly we had a taste for tacos. I think we made a great decision. The drinks were strong and delicious, the bartender was very generous. It was my first time trying barilla tacos and they did not disappoint. At most Mexican restaurants I've been to chips and salsa are complimentary. Not here. Six bucks for stale chips. At most Mexican restaurants I've been to rice and beans are part of entrees. Not here they are extra. And the food. Well neither burrito was really Mexican. I remember thinking Taco Bell would have been better, more authentic, more flavorful and wishing I had some of their sauce packets to add flavor and moisture. The driest food I may have ever eaten. Been here twice; once last summer then last week. The first time was solidly ok so I figured it was worth coming back but I was really disappointed and likely will pass in the future. Then some chunky tomatoes were thrown on top. It was just super amateur to receive at a restaurant. If they were upfront about the more food truck set up, could temper expectations but instead you just end up disappointed. Service was slowwww. People are very nice but we never received one of our apps, and were never checked in for water or anything else. We had to get up and ask for our bill after being finished for maybe 20 min and even then it was a good 10-15 more minutes before some came over. Welcome to the Jungle! You would never know by pulling up to the building what was hidden inside. Tequila Rio is a Mexican cantina serving up the best margaritas. The manager Aerie was the best and made ours, and the blood orange margarita was so refreshing! It was made with tequila, triple sec, and fresh lime juice with a sugar rim and orange slice. It was perfection after a long work week. We stopped in for their happy hour, which is from Tuesday through Saturday from 4-6pm. We started with the chicken chili nachos that were so delicious that we ordered a second round of those with our drinks, too! We also tried the chorizo flatbread with no jalapeños. It was drizzled with bbq sauce and so yummy. I also had the Rio Baja, a fried cod fish taco in a corn shell with a crema sauce. The decor is "wild" with trees and lights and had a fun time taking pictures! I had a great time, and Aerie made the experience so fun that I'd definitely be back! read more

Shockingly bad Mexican food. This was the top 5 worst restaurant meals I've ever had. We got the salsa flight with guacamole - all of the salsa tasted off. Chips were stale. Cocktails were premade/watered down (like they were made in a pitcher with ice and the ice had melted over the course of the day) We got an assortment of tacos and nothing was good. The fish tacos were horrible - oily fry and the fish tasted old. Once you get through the oddity of trecking through the basement to get there, the outdoor seating is nice - at least in late spring but I'll bet the mosquitos are bad in another month. Best Mexican flavors I have had in years. Our waitress gave us recommendations which is much appreciated because everything sounded amazing. I ordered the passion-ate margarita- silver tequila, passionfruit-pomegranate purée, lime juice, lemon and lime and the picante peach margarita- silver tequila, peach puree, lime juice, and sliced jalapeño for drinks! Amanda was our server and she was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. They had a band on Friday 9/24/21. Would like to try the upper part of the restaurant one day also. Splendid experience! We decided to visit Tequila Rios after a very pleasant experience at their sister restaurant The River. We sat outside near the river and it was very comfortable and relaxing. We started off with drinks and of course I ordered a spicy margarita which did not disappoint! My husband and I split the chips with various salas and guacamole.. I could have eaten two orders of these alone.. friggin delish! We' also ordered the Mexican street corn which was amaze! My only gripe was my shrimp tacos. I loved the innards but did not care for the actual taco. It was dry and tasteless in my opinion but my husband actually liked it and said it tasted very authentic. The rice and beans were fabulous. I would come back and I highly recommend!! Huge plus: an acoustic duo played some very laid back tunes for us which was a very nice touch! read more

Went here recently with my partner...Ordered margaritas, chips, and birria and chicken tacos. The drinks and chips were okay, but the tacos were NOT good. The tacos were served on a wet plate--yes, they were sitting in a flavorless mystery juice. The birria tacos had salad in them, and the meat was very questionable (cold, odd consistency, tasted like Spaghetti-O's!). We did not even touch the chicken tacos. Fortunately, the restaurant staff were polite and took the tacos off of our bill. However, I would not recommend coming here for the food...maybe just drinks and chips... read more

What a great location with amazing ambiance! Tequila Rio, a Mexican Cantina, is located in the CBS Building in Wethersfield and when weather permits, there are tables just a few feet from the bank of the Connecticut River. We lucked out on a night with great weather and when we arrived the patio was full of patrons enjoying a cool, end of summer breeze. We made a reservation beforehand and got sat right away. Definitely make a reservation. The trees are lit up at night in a variety of fun colors. It looked awesome. We also had a great server, Danny, who was knowledgeable and attentive. Drinkwise, we tried the El Diablo Esta Vivo, a margarita tradicional on the rocks and a frozen strawberry margarita. El Diablo Esta Vivo was definitely my favorite with Cimarron reposado, tawny port, combier cassis, xocolatl mole, lime juice and ginger beer. A very sophisticated mexican mule, indeed! Authentic Mexican dishes include tacos, tostadas, quesadillas, grilled salmon and filet mignon with chimichurri sauce. We ordered the Guacamole 2 Ways with Salsa- traditional and tropical guacamole with housemade tortilla chips and salsa. It was a great way to start dinner! Up next was the Coconut-Habanero Shrimp Tacos with red chile tortillas and pickled onions and the Pork Carnitas Tacos with salsa verde, white onions and cilantro. We split them and it was the perfect amount of food for a fun, social evening. The only thing they don't seem to have is hot sauce, so if you are a fan of that, be advised. (Danny did mention there was a sauce on the menu that could add some heat in a pinch if you need it.) By the time we finished talking, we were the last table left and that is always a great sign that an awesome night was had! Hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 4pm - 9pm. We drove an hour for a birthday dinner. We had a reservation. Online it said they seat outside beginning April 1st if the weather is nice, but a server then said that they don't seat outside until beginning of May. We were seated alone in another room, not the main restaurant. It was nice because we didn't have to deal with loud people, but we felt forgotten. It took at least 10 mins to get our waters. I personally ordered coffee and we had to remind them 3 different times. They completely forgot one drink and never brought it out. Our apps came out and were good - the crab empanadas were nice and spicy. Then our food came after an hour and a half. It was cold. The people who ordered fajitas the cast iron is supposed to sizzle and it was cold. Nothing was warm. The tacos had no sauce, dry. The steak was flavor wise okay. One person found bones in their chicken tacos. The manager/ server gave us the tacos free. There was no complimentary dessert or any other offers. Then we tried to split the bill and they double charged the tip. We arrived at 6:45 and left after 9:45. read more

Now it was Cinco de Mayo. I understand that this should be the busiest and most hectic day of the year for a Mexican restaurant. This really isn't the excuse for the poor service and iffy food we received. The restaurant has terrible signage so it's impossible to find. Once you discover it, you soon realize that it's outside. This was fine, once they put the heaters on. The place was half empty and it should have been an easy in and out. It took 10 minutes to take our drink order. My two daughters got their drinks relatively fast , but mine took a reminder and a solid 20 minutes to arrive. We ordered our food which were chicken quesadillas and a burrito. Also, as an app, chips and queso. 45 minutes later it all arrived...at once. The waitress was very nice and just kept apologizing. The table next to ours was so upset about the wait that they were comped drinks. The food itself was bland and iffy. The chicken was brown and the queso was not thick at all. "Cheese soup" is best way to describe it. My daughter didn't eat really any of her burrito, a food she usually enjoys. The issue is certainly not enough kitchen staff because the waiters were on it. They certainly should reevaluate their set up and who is working on a big day like this. read more

We had dinner here for my husband's birthday. We had a reservation for a party of 15, they sat us under the large white tent by the water. We had the entire area to ourselves which was awesome!! However the band cancelled so there was no music. The manager Colleen allowed us to bring our own speaker so that made up for it! As far as the drinks go, the Paloma was the worst I've ever had and tasted like all seltzer. The chicken empanadas are terrible!!!! They taste like dough and had minimal chicken inside. The waiter was great and took them off our bill for us. The mango guacamole was my favorite! I ordered the steak and cheese quesadilla and it was AMAZING!!! The atmosphere and vibe was beautiful! The view was lovely being able to see the review front. At the time we went, there was a ton of tables so we were able to get in with no reservation. Our server came to the table quickly and took our order. We got the nachos for the appetizers, 3 diff entrees and two mixed drinks. The ambiance itself is very lovely but as for authentic Mexican food I wouldn't recommend. The plating of the meals are lovely however it definitely lacks flavor, Mexican spices and the food is cooked in a white tent near the seating area which makes sense since dining is outside and not near the kitchen (food got cold quickly). The drinks were okay. The prices are pretty pricey which I'm assuming due to location and view. Last night, Fri. we enjoyed a River/Rio collab. They restaurant is in full swing of practicing COVID safe indoor protocols and have table plexi separators. We were able to pick off both menus and they have some delish Thanksgiving menus that look really good. FYI there's a 14 oz prime rib special that looks really good and big draw for a Mon or Tues night deal. So we rec the guac it's a variety salsa guac pack w homemade chips. The mexi st corn was amaziiing. I also tried the lobster bisque which was such a delight I forgot to take a pic. The best dish of the night would be pork carnitas tacos. The quesadillas were pretty delish. Everything was awesome I was worried the tapas sizes would be too small but everyone was v satisfied and it's a classy fun atmosphere. My family and I recently visited Tequila Rio on a Friday evening. The riverside seating is quite nice. Unfortunately there were intermittent storms so we were seated in the atrium which is also a really nice setting with a lot of plants albeit a bit cramped. Our first tip off should have been that the place was empty when we arrived at 5 o'clock but we assumed it had to do with the weather. My wife ordered a drink that was a combination between a pina colada and a margarita that was pretty good. We ordered guacamole and chips as an appetizer which is where the problem started. The chips were quite stale and hard to chew. The guacamole was edible but bland overall. We admittedly did not mention anything at this point and left it off to the side while we waited for our food. We each ordered a couple of tacos with the Mexican rice. Nothing that came out of the kitchen was cooked or seasoned well. I ordered a biria taco that was just some shredded beef in a stale tortilla with lettuce. There were some crumbles of queso fresco but there was no melted cheese. It did come with a side of jus but it looked and tasted like soup that they had in the kitchen. I had also ordered the baja shrimp taco which was also served on a stale tortilla and the shrimp was overcooked to the point of being rubbery. By the time I tasted the rice I don't know if I was just annoyed by the rest of the experience or if there was really something wrong with it but it was not to my, or my wife's, taste. We set the plates aside and politely requested the check. The server didn't seem to notice that anything was wrong at this point and we were just going pay the check and leave until he asked if we wanted boxes and declined. He then sent a manger over to see what they could do for us. The manager was very polite and understanding and took a few things off the bill for us. I note the service as 3 stars because our server was clearly the only one working when we walked in an he was trying to manage the bar and take orders. Not at all his fault but he wasn't able to properly do his job after a party of 8 came in after us. Overall I would not recommend Tequlia Rio unless you're just stopping for a couple of drinks on the waterfront. read more

Food was terrible. Cold, flavorless, not anywhere close to Mexican food. Which is what they advertise. The "mariachi" band was 3 old white men singing tequila accompanied by a small white tent where our food was cooking, which wasn't very reassuring. Drinks tasted like they had too much sour mix, very cheap tequila, and no straws even though we asked about 3 times from 3 different people. Overpriced. Our server did not say hi, how are you, my name is ___, or anything. She came over and barked, DRINKS?! And we were very confused. We felt like a bother. Getting their you have to walk through the whole building and past a dumpster and parking garage, super odd. Not clear with direction. Owner came over because she could tel we weren't happy and said "what's the problem here? You don't like the food? We just asked for the check and left. We will never come back, just go upstairs to river and avoid this place. read more

This is a great spot by the river for a date night / night out with family or friends. Our waiter, Cody, was attentive and helpful explaining the menu. Ordering the chips and guacamole appetizer is a must here. Its served with (4) fantastic dips: 3 different salsa's and a guac. Their margarita on the rocks is made perfectly. Choice of salt or sugar on the rim and not too sweet. Dinner: Filet Steak with rice and street corn and the Chicken and Cheese Quesadilla. Both were delicious and served on a warm plate. Dessert: creme brulee. Lightly sweet and pure heaven. I liked how they set-up outdoor heaters on the patio for added warmth on a cool evening. Worth making a reservation here. read more

Worst experience I've ever had in a restaurant. First off our server Heather P was not the nicest person it was like we was a bother to her. My wife drink was like drinking juice. We ordered crab empanadas that tasted like cat food. Our server brought us plates but was scratching something off the plate before handing it to my wife and saying I don't know what that is. Next the food we ordered was way overpriced for what we got. I ordered steak fajitas with sour cream and salsa not realizing that car extra four dollars for salsa and sour cream which I didn't get the behavior for $27 by themselves for 4. My wife ordered the Some fish at $26 and that's all that came was fish no sides nothing. The total bill for our dinner was $91. We asked to speak with the manager named Alex he was very apologetic and took some money off the bill. But overall we will not be going back there anytime soon. read more

There has been a decent amount of advertisement for this place - my friend heard about it through word of mouth and there is also a billboard on I-91. Mexican sounded good one Friday and this place is close by, so a group of us figured we'd check it out. Entry is through an office building which we already knew from going to The River which is next door. Had to take an elevator and follow signs but we figured out how to get there. The last step was to walk through the parking garage to a patio area. The patio area is right next to the water which is nice but from what I could tell, there is no indoor seating option and honestly the patio seemed a little thrown together-perhaps this is a temporary location but no one mentioned that. The patio is that bright blue cushioned tennis court type material. There are tables with umbrellas but that's about it, very little decor etc. From walking in, I thought the menu would be very casual - shareable apps, individual tacos to mix n match etc. But nope, turns out the menu is pretty expensive. Drinks were okay, traditional margarita didn't taste all that fresh. I got shrimp tacos which were good but only had 2 tacos for 18 bucks and didn't even come with rice and beans. Overall, I don't mind paying more if the atmosphere, service and food are good. Which I wouldn't give more than 3 stars for any aspect of this restaurant. Probably won't be back unless this is just some sort of temporary location. read more

My wife and stopped hear for the first time on Saturday afternoon. The atmosphere of an office building lobby space partially converted to a Mexican Cantina just ain't working. We ordered "Passion-ate Margarita's" which were OK, but the limes they stuck on the glasses for each drink were old (brown dried-up peels). We ordered Fried Plantains appetizer which was OK. We looked over the entrée menu and were not interested. We then ordered a couple more appetizers, a Cauliflower Taco and a Beer battered Cod taco. The Cauliflower Taco was horrible, some sort of blackened seasoning on the cauliflower was terrible. The battered Cod taco was ok. We will never go back there again and would recommend no one else go there as well. read more

Got the mango habanero margarita and skirt steak street tacos, both were very tasty!
