Puuu-leease. If you're having a hard time finding authentic Puerto Rican food in the New Haven, you're either not trying or you're likely referring to some other New Haven (New Haven, Vermont maybe?). Now New Haven isn't NYC but this region does have one of the highest populations of Puerto Ricans in the nation. It's in the top ten. IMO Fair Haven could easily pass for "little" San Juan. Although I drive by this tiny place often if it weren't for Yelp I would not have known about it. It's located directly off of the Boulevard in the Hill section of the city. That's Ella Grasso Boulevard to you non locals. It's half n' half = half tiny restaurant and half bakery. Yes when I say tiny I mean tiny. The interior is a little bit tired looking and worn down (heck but so is the entire Hill neighborhood). It is what it is. Fortunately my food looked far from tired. Both the beef stew and cuban sandwich prepared by the owner were excellent. I just assumed he was the owner. He spoke perfect English which was terrific because I don't speak Spanish. A really nice guy. He was kind enough to explain some of the menu items to me. He even explained some of his bakery items, of which I purchased several of them. The tres leches cake, which is a popular Latin American dessert for you idiots that confuse it with white sheet cake, was sort of funny looking. It could have tasted better. Fortunately the owner poured on the milk at the time of purchase, instead of having it soak forever behind the counter. Oh, and their cannoli's were not very good also. Sadly they tasted like they were made sometime during the Eisenhower administration. But I can't knock them for that because I should have known better purchasing cannoli's from a place like this. So shame on me for that dumb move. Lesson learned: get the main Puerto Rican food items... avoid the desserts.

No strangers to the culinary world, the Flagges have been involved in the catering business since 1980. When they founded their pizza truck business in 2007, the Flagges joined just a handful of other pizza trucks in Connecticut. They chose the name "Old World" to reflect a way of life and cooking: a celebration where food is more than just nourishment. Today the Flagges have a fleet of multiple pizza trucks and a staff of 25+ employees. The trucks travel around Connecticut to craft delicious wood-fired pizza pies at wineries, breweries, festivals, and private functions. When the trucks aren't running, they are parked behind One 6 Three: a brick & mortar wood-fired pizzeria that was founded by the Flagge's daughter Alexa and her boyfriend Andrew Holmes. Many of the menu items between Old World and One 6 Three are the same. My family and I recently sampled some pizzas from Old World while we were attending a friend's birthday party. Old World was hired to cater the party. I had previously sampled pizza from their sister business: One 6 Three. While some of the pizza varieties were the same, others were exclusive to the pizza truck menu. Throughout the party, some of the pizzas prepared included Pepperoni, Margherita, Fresh Sliced Tomato, Mashed Potato & Bacon, White Clam, Eggplant, Sausage, Asparagus, Spinach, Mushroom, Broccoli Rabe, Shrimp, Caramelized Onions, Roasted Red Peppers, Pan-Seared Zucchini, Filet Mignon, and Peanut Butter & Jelly. They were all delicious!! Afterwards, the friendly staff served French-style ice cream, espresso, cappuccino, and affogatos for dessert. I was really impressed with the pizza from Old World and I hope to run into one of their trucks again!

Working with SKBT and Karen has been a joy from start to finish. From the moment we walked into our tasting to create our delicious menu, to last minute changes, to executing perfect food the day of, I want to relive this experience again and again. My guests raved about the menu, and some favorites included fun takes on cocktail meatballs, shrimp and grits, and chilled tomato soup shooters. The food was beautiful and displayed like it was in a magazine. Karen and her team were also in charge of staffing my event. This meant not only did they feed my guests, but bussed the tables, cleaned up trash, set up my pie display (Karen took it upon herself to clean out her stock of cake stands and create the most beautiful tables ever) and EVEN mop my bathroom trailer when it sprung a leak. As guests started to leave, SKBT cleaned every table and organized my decor. Best of all, Karen and her team were friendly and attentive the entire night. My bridal party had their own tray of appetizers waiting for them immediately following the ceremony, and all night the staff checked in on my husband and I (as well as my parents) to see how they could help. I eagerly look forward to having another event so I can hire this team again.

Their Sanctuary Kitchen project bolsters another objective -- encouraging fairness and participation in the entrepreneurial aspects of food business. As I understand Sanctuary Kitchen, they offer fair wage employment opportunities in a food catering and grab and go type business to immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. I believe these people are encouraged to help expose people to world cuisines that are meaningful to them. You can order food for pickup at designated times. You can also buy the food at the Farmers Markets. I recently visited the Sunday City Seed Market at Edgewood Park near the Westville neighborhood of New Haven. There were a variety of foods. I grabbed a tasty hunmus and a box of the donut style falafel. Both good. But I was really intrigued by the Iraqi food offerings because I haven't knowingly had Iraqi food. I bought Iraqi Carrot and Dill rice, Iraqi Lentil Soup and Iraqi Vegetable Curry Soup. Since I'm not experienced in Iraqi cuisine, I can't speak to authenticity or make a comparative quality analysis. The food seemed nutrient rich. I'm not sure if this a cultural thing or the preference of the individual cook, I think the food needed a bit more salt across the board. Also, in terms of texture, the rice was good, but the soups seemed a bit overcooked and had a softer texture than I would expect. I was happy to have a chance to try these foods and I applaud the mission of City Seed. 4.25 Stars

Everything that came out their tiny kitchen tasted like heaven. Here are the things I had the opportunity to eat and their ratings: * Sweet potato with special sauce 5/5 * Mini Fish tacos 5/5 * Mini chicken sandwich with cauliflower bites 5/5 * Mini slider 4/5 Everything was fresh, delicious, and hot. I think hot is important to note because if you've had catering at an outside event before, sometimes it's just cold finger foods and it's not always tasty. Not Forks and Fingers! All of it was hot and fresh! Totally recommend! Did I mention the service? Absolutely wonderful. They were helpful, responsive, and everything was clear and upfront. There were no surprise charges, or "gotchas". In fact they did several things beyond the scope of the contract without additional charges. More importantly, on the wedding day everything went perfectly. They gave us great advice on the set up of the tables, chairs, bar etc. They listened carefully to everything that was asked of them, made a couple of outstanding suggestions and dealt with the problems caused by strong gusts of wind at an outdoor venue with calm assurance. All of the food was incredible. The hor's d'ourves were fantastic, especially the brie and artichoke tarts, mini lobster rolls and tuna tacos. The mac and cheese in mini ramekins were also a huge hit. The dinners were equally delicious. I had the half chicken, which was served with a delicious polenta. It was absolutely amazing. Perfectly cooked, moist with a crispy skin. Other sides were served family style and were all fantastic. The dessert was also superb. Each guest received a trio of mini desserts, each of which was delightful. We had several guests with food restrictions (vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free). The servers made sure the restrictions were observed, and they made it a point to bring appropriate appetizers to those guests, which was a very nice touch. All of the guests raved about the food. The service was also first class. There were so many servers handling the passed hor's d'ourves that every guest had multiple chances to try each of the offerings. Service of the dinner was equally impressive. The venue is outdoors, and it is a bit of a hike from the kitchen tent to the dining area. Despite that, the guests were served quickly, and the food came to the table still hot. Finally, their prices are quite reasonable, especially given the outstanding quality of the food and service. A very good value.
