Came in at 3 pm on a holiday Friday and the restaurant was quite crowded. I got in line and quickly read through the menu and also what was behind the glass counter and opted for the small plate for $11. They had a lunch special for $14 but honestly, it looked like too much food which really bodes well. I got the plate with chicken, opting for the seasoned (?) chicken rather than the fried chicken but both looked great. Got it with the yellow rice and beans (had option for soup or white rice or lentils). There were a few people checking out before me which took a few minutes. Also grabbed one of their corn cheese pastries but there were a lot of options, such as empanadas and more desserts. I opted to take the food to go though there were a few seats and outdoor tables available. Everything tasted great! Corn pastry should be eaten immediately otherwise it gets a bit firm. And the small plate was enough food for me to last two meals. I'm glad I live so close, I plan to try even more of their options! read more

English: My family is from NY and we were visiting CT for a few days and we found this awesome place while driving by. Staff is very friendly, owners are very sweet, food is so flavorful and yummy . My mom and my aunts are from Ecuador and they said that this food is some of the best Ecuadorian food they've had in the states!! If you visit I recommend the bolon. I went online looking for a bakery nearby. It's tough to find one that's open past noon on Sunday. Now I'm grateful they did, otherwise I may not have stumbled upon Gutiz. Once inside, the aromas were so enticing that I not only get a pineapple pastry, but couldn't resist getting 2 empanadas. Everything was outstanding. This tiny place on Main Street is three things: - Bakery - Hot Prepared foods - Sit-down style very small cafeteria The food is mostly Ecuadorian (that's what I assume by the looks of the "Ecuador" posters hanging on the walls). They have empanadas, arepos, tamale type thingys and lots of rice. Whenever I visit I'm usually the only gringo in the building. I get take-out so I'm in and out very quickly. The people behind the counter are polite and understand English, although it seems it is not their first language. Everything is written in Spanish. You might recall that a few years ago the owners of this place and a priest from New Haven were in some controversy about Hispanic profiling from the East Haven police. Yea, hard to believe, huh? I love both East Haven officials and honest hard working people, so I try not to get involved with the politics of the town. Plus I love trying different ethnic foods. So gimme some nice empanadas and some nice hot sauce and I'm happier than a clam at high tide. Their pastry and bakery items don't look overly impressive, so IMO just stick with the prepared foods. read more
