I LOVE La Cocina de Doña Maggie! My friend and I were heading south back down from a trip to the Sequoias and were hungry for breakfast. We're SO glad we came across Doña Maggie's! There is ample parking in their lot once you arrive. The entrance and decor is BEAUTIFUL--so many lovely cultural pieces. The place is filled with the sounds of wonderful Mexican music playing in the background. The service is FANTASTIC. Our waitress was kind, quick, and very friendly. You get chips and salsa as soon as you're seated. My friend and I ordered breakfast burritos, which came with bacon, ham, cheese, egg, and potatoes. FIRE burrito! Also, they come with two salsas--one is delicious and one is SPICYYYY. Beware! Their agua fresca de pepino y limón was refreshing, their restrooms are clean, and you can even purchase other wares from their store. Stopped by La Cocina de Doña Maggie and decided to go with 3 tacos gobernador. The tacos were juicy, not dry like you sometimes get elsewhere. You could tell they were made fresh, and whomever is the cook, knows how to season well. Service was on point and super attentive. They checked on me at least 4 times to make sure everything was good, which honestly made the whole experience even better. It's rare to see that kind of consistency in small local spots. The only thing I felt was missing was a more savory salsa to match those tacos. The one they gave me seemed like a salsa de chile de árbol -- spicy with good flavor, but I wished I had an extra salsa option that leaned more on the smoky or tangy side to balance out the richness of the gobernador. The place was quiet, comfortable, and relaxed -- no loud music or chaos, just a good spot to sit back and enjoy your food. Definitely worth a visit again. As good as the ratings would suggest. I was greeted at door by a friendly hostess who also turned out to be my server. Within a minute of being seated I had chips and salsa at my table and the Diet Coke I'd ordered. The chips were on the thicker side but fresh and delicious and the red salsa had just the right amount of kick. Instead of the usual Mexican fairs I went with the Albondigas soup. Delicious broth and nice large meatballs and packed with veggies. I highly recommend this restaurant and can't wait to come back. read more

Decided to try this place. Outside looked like it was out of business but decided to go inside anyway. The menu was very hard to read. Besides the fact that most of the descriptions were only in Spanish, there weren't any sort of pictures to even see what the food was. The AC was not on or didn't work. Fans were on but it wasn't cool enough on a 103 degree day. They were out of chili verde at 2pm on Saturday. The chips were hard. Salsa was hot sauce, not a chunky salsa. Overall, not impressed. We went for breakfast on a Sunday morning. No waiting got a table right away. Lotería decor with pila papel. I ordered huevos rancheros, made with two corn tostadas and topped with three eggs. I ordered them over-over. They could have had more potatoes and the beans were cold. The presentation was a bit messy but the eggs had a good taste. My sister in law liked the chorizo, potatoes and beans. My husband had the Chilaquiles red/green and he said they were okay. The Beans and red Chilaquiles could've been warmer but had a good flavor. The food is excellent. Been here a few times trying things, and have settled on my go to. The molcajete mixto is so good. Head-on shrimp! Wife had the taco salad with chicken and loved it tonight. The place is older, has a 70s vibe to the booths, but it's always clean. Every time our waiter wasn't doing something for a customer he was cleaning. Other waiter was doing the same. Very impressed with the cleanliness. Only issue I had was lack of air conditioning. It wasn't bad at first, but a boiling hot molcajete had me wishing for some A/C before long. read more

We walked in a 8:00 PM, a party of 7, the waitress (that was sitting down eating with someone) went to grab the menus and says how many people, we said 7, then she proceeds to ask us, "well what time is it?" I said it's 8, don't you close at 9pm? she said well ya but we stop taking orders at 8pm! Long story short, apparently if you arrive A WHOLE HOUR before they close they can't seat/serve you. Tortillas are handmade and are also good. There is definitely a small wait time (waited about 25 minutes for 3 plates), but this isn't a fast food restaurant. Handmade tortillas and fresh food definitely take some time to make and was well worth the wait. Server was also very attentive and customer service overall was 5/5. I had the Chilaquiles con Huevos and a fish taco, hubs had the Chorizo con Huevos (we like breakfast, okay?), dad got a Chile Relleno with Shrimp, and mom got several things: a Lengua Taco, a Fish Taco, and a Carne/Queso Coyota. This review was very difficult because I was back and forth with 3 and 4 stars. Their service is 5/5 hands down. The ladies were very nice and kept refilling drinks and chips. They were attentive and just very pleasant. The chips (while quite cold) were good and the salsa was pretty decent as well. I had 2 tacos de lengua (the lengua was tender and cooked well), a fried quesadilla thing (which I forgot the name of and it lacked cheese in my honest opinion), and my cousin got the 3 enchiladas verdes with cheese. The enchiladas were interesting because for the cheese they use queso fresco which is not a good cheese for melting purposes. It gives off an interesting taste that's quite peculiar. Overall it was $24 which isn't too bad considering all of the other places being more expensive. Overall exceptional service but the food isn't the best I've had. The waitresses are always nice, music playing in the background, the restaurant is colorful, and it's a hidden gem in Porterville. I ordered the two taco special with rice and beans. I got fish tacos and one ala carte shrimp taco. The waitress told me the fish and shrimp were battered and the corn tortillas were homemade. Let me start by saying the corn tortillas were huge, the fish and shrimp were battered and fried and so good!! The pico De gallo was good as well as the cream sauce on the tacos, they were pretty darn good. The rice and beans were homemade as well. They reminded me of my late grandmothers.
