First time dining at El Maguey and will definitely be back. Small and quaint space with very friendly staff. Had heard great things about this restaurant and finally decided to give it a try. The menu was composed of fairly common dishes found at most Mexican restaurants. I'll review the dishes we tried. First, we had some carne asada tacos. The meat was seasoned and cooked well, topped on fresh made corn tortillas. Garnished with onion, cilantro and fresh salsas. Would have again. Their fish was freshly fried and seasoned well. Nice crisp skin and super moist flesh. The garlic butter I requested added an additional layer of flavor. The refried beans were delicious and well as the rice. The side salad was complimentary to the fish as it was refreshing and citrusy. I enjoyed my meal to say the least. I definitely will visit again. read more

Named after the mezcal agave this little Mexican restaurant is small but mighty! Off a main road, Olive Ave. you may drive right by it. The customer service is on point as soon as you enter you are greeted like you're the only customer! The decor is authentic as well as the food. It's a small space with a shared parking lot but come before or after lunch and you'll have no trouble. Plenty of food items to please your palate. The food and aguas are flavorful. Cold beer as well Mexican beer on tap. There is also a beautiful dessert case with flans. Like their sign says they are a small business but their seasoning is big. My family's favorite pastor in the Porterville area! We order the pastor burrito, pastor street tacos, pastor quesadilla, and pastor tacos dorado. The flavor of all of those items are spot on delicious every time and we can't stop ordering them to try anything else. Horchata is super yummy here too! If you have a dairy allergy, stay away from the asada as they cook it with an oil that contains milk ingredients. My daughter's favorite dairy free things to eat are the street pastor tacos with everything, the pastor burrito with added avocado or guac, and their chips 'n salsa Fast and friendly service are the icing on the cake! read more

The Micheladas here are amazing! I went with a non-alcoholic Tamarindo Michelada made with Mineragua, and it was so refreshing and flavorful. My fiancé ordered the Michelada de Camarón, and it was packed with bold, savory flavors. 1st time here, and let me tell you the food was great, I ordered the Chile Verde plate and it was delicious. Something about it brought memories of when my jefita would make it. We also ordered Micheladas for me and the wifee, and they did not disappoint at all. Once again, I used a delivery service to place my order. Today I chose a taco salad with chicken as my choice of meat. Also an order of fries and a drink. The chicken taco salad was very good. The shell was very light and crispy. It had rice which I'd never had in a taco salad before but the flavors were quite good. On first glance it didn't look huge, but it was very very filling. Could not eat all of it myself, it was very filling. The fries were the skinny straight kind and they were nicely seasoned. I would order this again. read more

My friends and I hung out today and two of us were so hungry that we wanted to punch walls. Haha jk We had quite a drive to Porterville so on the way there I Yelped a spot to have some lunch. We all knew that we wanted Taqueria style food so I checked this place and compared it to a few. El Maguey caught my attention with such great reviews and delicious looking food pics. The place was easy to find and we all placed our orders in a timely manner. The girls upfront were really nice and catered to my very demanding and hangry request for extra radishes and grilled jalapeños. The food was remarkable. I mean finger licking, swallow without chewing completely good. It was exactly what I was craving. My friends loved their food as well. Service was good however you can sit down to eat you but have to go to the register to order I order a burrito chorizo, and egg, I added potato and cheese they charged $2.06 for being a custom burrito and then they charge for the cheese. The chorizo was a bit dry and burnt. If they added it beans probably would've helped. I ate half of it. 12.00 burrito cheese 1.50 plus custom 2.06 total cost 15.00 wasn't very happy with that price read more

One of my favorite go-to spots in Porterville is El Maguey. This location has some of the best Mexican food I have tried. The Mexican food at this location tastes really authentic, and it makes me feel like I'm eating traditional food from my culture. The Aguas frescas are so refreshing and delicious. They even sell some Mexican desserts that are kind of pricey but worth it. I would highly recommend going if you can. read more

First time I've been here, I read the reviews and so my husband and I went he ordered a Chile verde burrito with pork and green sauce and the meat was tough and I couldn't chew it, it had a flavor of lime- lemon over the top, which I liked but not my husband. We also ordered the chicken flautas, there wasn't much meat and it was very dry, the rice and beans were ok but not very much on the plate. Overall, we will stick with "El Jacalito" for Chile Verde burritos and flautas. The place was clean and staff was friendly. If they are busy they need to learn how to multi task and simplify answer the phone and inform the customer they will be placed in a brief hold. She finally answered the phone and placed my order, just to later pick up my order and see the that the container was mostly full with the broth and a handful of meat pieces. I placed my order at 11 so it might have been a little late for menudo but they could have at least informed us that they were running low instead of giving us a cup full of broth. read more

When in Porterville this place is worth a visit. Small spot and can be misleading from the outside but food is delicious. The two ladies very helpful and provided suggestions.
