I wish I could give them a better review, especially since I also use to be a barista in Chicago and I love the community here....but every time I've gone, it's been a huge disappointment. Today, I asked a simple question: "Do you have syrups for your Lattes or any chai?". Of course, it's fine that they don't-- it's the manner of which they responded. Super rude and redirected me to Starbucks instead in a very blunt and short-tempered manner. Yes, I understand it might be annoying to answer the same questions all day...but c'mon. It's called basic customer service. I understood this as a barista when people asked dumb coffee questions all the time, but I feel like asking if your shop provides syrup options IS NOT asking something out of the norm. Please do better to realize that this kind of behavior is really off-putting and made me want to write this review for some constructive criticism. The staff is disgustingly rude and racist. One of the white workers who was wearing a blue t-shirt and jeans with short dark brown hair yelled at my partner's 16 year old daughter for tasting her drink. First, the two baristas who took our orders never asked for our vaccine cards which we would have gladly shown them. Second, they never told us we couldn't drink inside as there were many other people drinking and eating in the shop. Third, that same white male employee talked to a couple of white guys right after us with a much softer tone. Yet he chose to talk to the only people of color in the shop (us) with an attitude. He was condescending and racist. I truly hope he gets fired. I have never been treated so poorly. I will never come back to this terrible location. read more

Once again La Colombe excels. Draft latte an extremely under appreciated gem at these stores. They let you sample and the turnaround on ordering to drinks is literal seconds. Small space but standing room and quick ordering and service to get you on with your day. Food is made fresh in the morning so if you get in early take a bite otherwise might be a bit old and they don't microwave so a bit cold room temperature. But drinks are on point including the oat milk latte and iced chai tea latte. Tons of flavor and creamy freshness. Fantastic. read more

Ash nazg durbatulûk. This means "One ring to rule them all" in the Black Speech of Mordor. If I knew the Black Speech of Mordor, I would title this review "One Coffee Shop to Rule them all." But I don't know the Black Speech of Mordor, so here we are. This is a beautiful coffee shop, inside and out. Total marriage material. Knowledgeable, enthusiastic staff who are helpful to those with and without a high coffee IQ. Great coffee. In the summer, although it's available year round, I'd recommend the Black & Tan, which is their cold brewed coffee topped with their draft latte, which is pure nitro milky goodness. The rest of the year, I'm torn between suggesting a workshop cortado and one of their Silverton pour-overs. The workshop cortado will be two ounces of lightly roasted single origin espresso topped with two ounces of perfectly steamed milk. It's the best 4 ounces you'll consume this year. They make their pour-overs on a neat device called the Silverton. They use the best coffee in the joint for these. They take about 5 minutes, but they're worth the wait. Delightful stuff. A few things to know: they are a coffee shop, not an Internet lounge that happens to serve coffee. What I'm trying to say is that they don't have WiFi. The focus is on the coffee and espresso. They don't use external flavor shots, e.g caramel, hazelnut, vanilla, etc. From what I hear, they feel these distract from the flavors naturally existing in their fine coffee. If you're used to drinking sweetened coffee, this is the place to go to dive into the wonderful world of high end coffee without breaking the bank. read more

Coffee is always spot on and I LOVE that they serve the drinks in gorgeous cups/saucers. They have plenty of tea and pastry, yogurt, juice and other non caffeinated beverages but no real food/sandwiches- that's the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Ample seating and outlets if you need to plug in for work. As far as pastries, I've had the chocolate croissant, focaccia bread with tomatoes (to die for), chocolate chip cookies, all were lovely. They don't have an oven though, so you can't warm the pastries up. I normally find free parking on Foster West of Clark or on some of the side streets just east of Clark. I've had two poor customer service experiences at La Colombe, and it bums me out because everyone seems to really love this place (great reviews, line is always out the door, etc.) Each time I've gone the cashier/order taker has been super rude and short with me. The first time I wanted to order something from the pastry display case, but nothing had any signage, so I had to ask what everything was (some things were obvious like cookies, but others were interesting looking scones/muffins, things that appeared to be stuffed with various ingredients, etc.) The person taking my order seemed to get increasingly impatient with me, to which I wanted to say "post some signs and I will stop wasting your time." The second experience I asked if they could make me a chai latte (which wasn't listed on their menu, but it seems like a pretty standard cafe drink so I thought I'd asked). I was answered with an eye roll and a flat "no -- we can't" as though I was the 100th person to ask this question in the last hour. I get that it's not listed on the menu, but it seemed like an ok question to ask... it's not like I asked for a steak dinner! Anyhoo, it seems like they have really good drinks and foodstuffs. My husband often goes there at less busy times (weekday late afternoon) than me (weekend mornings) and hasn't had the same issues as me. The atmosphere would get a 5/5. The fourth wall is all windows, which lets in the perfect amount of light. Lots of wood and brick. A clean environment with good music. However, I did not realize it was a no wifi spot when I came in. I wish there had been some signage near the cash register. I love the idea and think it's so cool; however, if you come in to do work, it may really impede that. It did for me! Also, my drip coffee was $3, which I think a bit expensive for just drip. If it were a pour over or french press, I could understand. But it's literally batch brewed, so...? I also didn't like the flavor. It wasn't acidic, but the high notes were too strong, in my opinion. Expected this to be great coffee. Took one sip of the americano- the small was huge and the shots were so burnt in flavor. Had to add cream and sugar and neither my husband or I could drink more than a sip. We love great coffee, expected this to be on par with our craft coffee in Denver since it presents itself that way, but no dice. There are plenty of great wi-fi spots in the neighborhood where you have to show up at 7 AM to get a seat. I was told by a woman at the counter that this is intentional, in an effort to prevent people from staying too long (same as the rest of their locations)... Let me preface my review by telling you what I want in a coffeehouse: really good coffee and pleasant efficient service, period. Wi-Fi? I carry a smartphone and a cellular tablet, and I have a home wi-fi network, thank you very much. My goodness, whatever did those Greenwich Village and North Beach beatniks do during the daytime back in the 1950s without wi-fi? The poor things must have had to make do with making conversation...and drinking coffee. And communicating by--oh, the horror!--landline phone, written mail, or in person. Coffee. Actual coffee. Serious coffee, as in the Pre-Starbucks era (before Starbucks sold drinks), when a drip was a drip, an espresso an espresso, a cappuccino a cappuccino and "latte" was Italian for "milk" (the drink was called a "caffe latte"). And for anything flavored, sweeter, creamier, or icier-blended you went to the ancient facility called (variously) a "soda fountain," "malt shop" or "ice cream parlor." I popped into La Colombe because: I'd seen the name mentioned in the Yelp section of the EveryBlock Chicago digest; I'd just finished my hair appointment and still had 15 min. left on my parking meter; and I wanted some coffee, not necessarily food, before my next errand. There it was, right where I'd parked. Surprised to find it was a coffeehouse and not a restaurant, given its corner location at A'ville's major intersection. Nice cool dark granite-wood-steel-brick vibe balanced by massive windows to let in the light. Walked up to the bar, and to my delight saw "cortado" listed on the drink menu. I'd discovered those in Spain a few weeks ago: bigger than a macchiato, smaller than a flat white, less foamy than a cappuccino. Two strengths (single & dbl. shot) and two sizes (classic and "workshop," whatever that was) for all their coffee drinks. No rainbow array of syrup bottles, no huge display of pastries, sandwiches, and whatever--just a couple of what they were featuring that day. My decaf cortado was perfect (the barista gladly made it a "breve"--with half & half--at no extra charge; will check out hemp milk later on, as I'm always looking for a low-carb alternative). There was a lovely bit of latte art, it was hot but not scalding, the taste was smooth and balanced and the texture nicely uniform. Music? So unobtrusive I didn't even notice it--which is the way I want it when I'm not going out specifically to hear live music. Drank my cortado, watched the world go by, and was on my way in under 10 minutes. Which is as it should be. Need wi-fi for free? There is a marvelous invention called a PUBLIC LIBRARY. Check it out. Note: I say "coffeehouse" and not "coffee shop" because to me--after growing up in Brooklyn and 37 years living in Chicago--"coffee shops" are those luncheonettes ("diners" without the real or faux rail car exteriors) run by a seemingly extended clan of Greek restaurant owners. read more

Love this spot for its coffee, setup, and for the sole fact that people actually interact with one other. This no-wifi spot offers incredible roasts of coffee, through various brewing processes. I think just for the flavor of the coffee, it's 5 stars. Hands down, the best coffee I have ever had. I've had Dark Matter, Intelligentsia, Starbucks, Metropolis, etc. and every coffee drink at this place is superior...For my tastes... I guess the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that it really is only about coffee and therefore should probably smell like coffee when you walk in...It still kind of smells like the Vitamin store or possibly even the construction from the Vitamin store to the coffee shop...I like the smell of coffee at a coffee shop. Also, they are very limited on decorations and food items but I guess I don't actually care about that. I do like that how Starbucks put Coffee Chicago out when they came to the neighborhood that this place opens a couple blocks from the Starbucks. They were out of Hemp Milk the other day but replaced it with Almond milk and as it turns out, I liked that better for a latte...And in the past, I always added sweeteners or syrups to my latte, there is no need for that here. read more

Tried this new place several times since it opened. Held off on writing a review because I wanted to give them a good try, especially after the usual grand opening craziness died down. The coffee was decent, the staff reasonably pleasant, though nothing outstanding that made me feel like anyone cared if I ever came back. PROS: nice, clean open room seems inviting and rather conducive to chatting with others if so inclined. Decent coffee - seems like kind of a "coffee purist" kind of place. Great location, especially if you are walking the 'hood or taking the Clark or Foster bus. No Wifi could be either a pro or con, depending upon your view. Personally, I kind of liked not seeing a bunch of zombies tying up all the tables, plugged in, headphoned and tuned out to anything around them (why do these people seek a public forum to isolate themselves in the first place?) CONS: There is NO MENU! Period. Really. While they don't offer various sizes of coffee or espresso (12 oz drinks only), and they don't have fussy "coffee-inspired" drinks or much in the way of food offerings ( just a handful of baked goods in a display case) , a walk-in business still needs to post some sort of a menu. The counter person I asked about this said that they are "walking menus" Huh? The fact that I was charged a $1.00 more for the exact same drink two days apart kind of reinforces that some sort of menu showing their prices is needed. I've been there twice now, both times on weekend afternoons. Crowded, uncomfortable seating and not enough of it, no menu, bad pastries, coffee not worth the hassle. When I inquired about a menu, a cheerful barista said, "I'm the menu!" And that's cute, but kind of irritating if you want to ask about the options and there are ten grumpy customers waiting in line behind you. This is the kind of coffee place Portlandia would mock. ETA 8/31/15: I go there about once a weekend (still!), and on two separate Sundays by early afternoon, they were totally out of food. The offerings, even at the beginning of the day, are pretty paltry, but to continually run out on weekends when a rush ought to be expected just doesn't make business sense to me. read more

The first time I stopped in on the way to work, around 8:00pm. I asked for a vanilla latte. What I got was, "We don't do flavors here." OK, no big deal. The latte was good and the barista who made it even did some kind of fancy swirl with the foam on top. I took a quick look at the pastries and wasn't "wowed" by what I saw. I stopped in this afternoon (Saturday) around 4:15pm, with the intent of enjoying a latte and a pastry while balancing my checkbook. When I got to counter, I ordered a latte and asked about a pastry. The cashier said, "Oh it's Saturday afternoon and this is all we have left" while she pointed to the pastry case that looked like a swam of locust had been through it. Inside were 2 non-descript brown cookies (molasses maybe?), 2 scones and broken bits of biscotti in a jar. When I asked what kind of scones they were, the cashier said, "Oh, I think those are bacon cheddar." You think?!?! I then asked if she could heat one up for me and I got this, "We don't have anything to heat up stuff. You can take it home and heat it up." Really?! There goes my plan of relaxing for a few. So, I just paid for my coffee, sat and drank it and was out of there within 15 minutes. I realize that it was late in the day and didn't really expect the choice of food items to be endless, but to only have a few items for patrons to choose from, with almost 3 hours until you close, is crazy. And when was the last time you went to a coffee shop and it didn't have a toaster oven or microwave to heat up a pastry? Unlike some of the previous posters, I could care less if the place has WiFi or not. I give La Colmbe 2 stars only because of the decent coffee. Other than that, I'll wander down to Starbucks or head south the Peets or Julius Meinl if I want to relax with some coffee and a treat. I get that LaColmba wants to "stand out from the crowd" and encourage people to talk to each other, but they need to step up the game if they want to be more that a one cup carry out joint. read more

I just moved to Andersonville and was bemoaning the lack of a good coffee shop on Clark near Foster. When I noticed that La Colombe was moving in, I thought my (first world, bourgeois) prayers had been answered. Before I ever went in, I could tell this place would be serious about coffee, and as it turns out, they are. My latte was spectacular, as good as Vivace in Seattle. Perfectly roasted beans, perfectly frothed milk, perfectly blended and absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for caring, La Colombe. But I have to say I'm disappointed that this place also feels the need to be so precious. There's no reason for it. Just have the coffee speak for itself. On the WIFI front, I understand that WIFI attracts folks who buy one coffee and then stay all day, and that that's not good for business. But outstanding coffee and a good attitude also attract loyalty. If this place offered WIFI, I'd be here every day, I'd buy my beans here, I'd talk it up to folks. I'd love it if coffee shops could just be a place to hang out and have a conversation, like they were during college (ah, those were the days!), but as it is, I need to do work, so for better or for worse, I need WIFI. Second, I'm a musician, and the lack of a menu reminds me a bit of songwriters who say, "Screw all the rules! I'm just gonna re-invent the form. I will now write a song in 5 different keys that's 12 minutes long." While that's creative and nice, the rules are there for a reason - people like to hear songs in one or two keys and they expect them to be about 3 or 4 minutes long. Similarly, menus exist for a reason - people have just a few minutes to grab a coffee, people want to know how much things cost, etc. Actually, I really consider it a courtesy to provide prices. Just because I live in Andersonville doesn't mean I have an unlimited coffee budget, you know? Basically, I want to love this place. I really do. I appreciate it in theory (because yes, the coffee is the most important part, and yes, it is usually not treated that way) but in practice the coffee alone is not going to bring me back. And I kind of feel like that's part of the point - this place is not made for people like me. It's tailored for the leisure class - like, you're welcome if you have plenty of spare time and money, but not if you're so vulgar as to need prices and wireless. Not much more I could ask for in a coffee shop. They also have a number of baked goods which I have yet to try including a ham and cheese croissant. As soon as I walked in I loved the vibe. It's open with tons of windows that let in the natural light, yet at the same time the gray walls and wooden tables give it a certain moodiness. To mix things up a bit I decided to try the hot chocolate. How refreshing that the dairy alternative is hemp milk, rather than the usual soy or almond. The hot chocolate was served in beautifully patterned stoneware, along with a demitasse spoon. How civilized! The barista also swirled a heart in the foam. I have a soft spot for hearts in my cup. I enjoy this place...immensely. The atmosphere is simple. I feel like everything they offer is bare minimum but top shelf. You're going to get better than good coffee. While I love their draft oat milk latte, they have very limited food options. So yesterday I decided to get an Ann Sather breakfast wrap and enjoy some Colombe latte with it. Well the barista gave me a very dirty look bringing in my wrap which I was hoping to enjoy with my $5 draft latte. She stated my food could bother other people. Are you f'n kidding me? This is a coffee shop, not an exclusive health club. And I would feel differently if they offered eggs or egg sandwiches for purchase. I have bought many a croissant there and spent plenty at their business to enjoy one bfast wrap. It was very off putting and I don't think I will be back. read more

It can be a little pretentious, yes. No, they don't have wi-fi. But God damnit if I'm not in there daily for a great latte or Americano. La colombe is exactly what this neighbourhood needed- great coffee without the high price point and attempts to take advantage of you (ahem, Kopi- I'm looking at you). Additionally, Half of the staff is friendly and half is merely polite, but all of them are professional and good at what they do. I feel good coming in to support this business. Coffee is good enough. Seating is a bit uncomfortable though. At $2.75 for a cup, you are definitely paying a premium. Still, it's Andersonville so one should expect to pay a little more. The vibe is washed hipster. The gentlemen working behind the counter are polite and moving quickly to get people their order. The music is soft jazz (see hipster above) and all in all, it's a good atmosphere to work or study. read more
