Modern salon is a Dominican-owned unisex beauty salon in Washington Heights. While they primarily…read morecater to Spanish-speaking clientele, all are welcome. There are three hair dressers who do women's hair and they also have one barber who cuts men's hair. The hair prices are consistent with the other local prices, though there isn't always full transparency about what the prices are since they vary by hair length and thickness. I've known the owner of this salon, Elizabeth, since I was a child and I've been coming here on and off for several years. Elizabeth is very professional and knowledgeable about hair. Sometimes she will suggest treatments for your hair like Botox or keratin, but it never feels forced or obligatory. All of the women are very nice and I always feel welcome. My only complaint about the salon is that they do have high turnover for hair washers and there is only one. Usually there isn't too much of a wait but on busy days, it can get backed up with just one person. Their current hair washer, Carolina, is really good. She takes her time detangling and she is patient. I definitely recommend Modern Salon if you're looking for a new salon.

Today, I asked them to apply my hair dye that I brought from my house, because I have a wedding tomorrow and didn't wanna tint my hands. They charged me $70 to just apply the color, no blow dry, no rollers. The person just applied the color that I bought and brought to the salon. Their excuse is that I have a lot of hair (I don't) I wish that was true. This whole process took the most, an hr and a half. I would like to emphasize that again I brought my own color. When I asked her how much it would be with the blow dry she said $85. So the blow dry will be $15. Again I brought my own color, there was no blow dry, no rollers, I left with my hair wet and she looked at me in the face and said $70. Plus I tipped everyone who touched my hair. Safe to say I will not be making this go to salon. I feel like she pulled the $70 number out her ass. If she would've said like $50 ok... but they won't see me again. Everyone that touched my head seemed nice, but it's not worth this price. I legit spend $100 for an hr and half, no styling and I brought my own hair color. These are downtown prices.

Overall I'm happy to support a local spot but likely won't go back. General review is, it's not…read moreventilated at all (so much smoke from hair drying), no heat protectant on my type of hair (smoked the entire blow dry), not very custom but, kind of expected all of this. I'm giving it 4 stars because even if I don't go back, it's likely it may be right for someone else. Also, fully would never want a woman of color owned local spot place to be docked for my own preferences. I was definitely over charged unfortunately. The woman washing my hair, although very kind, put conditioner on my hair and put me under a heat lamp (I knew it was going to be an up charge but she didn't give me an option to say no...for conditioner *sigh*) When I called the owner (Wanda) she told me that haircuts were starting at $35, I ended up paying $60 with a $15 dollar tip and a $30 surcharge for a CC so $78. Too much. Twice what I was quoted. She was also so incredibly sweet. I'm not sure who I ended up seeing, but I kept seeing reviews that people talk to the owner, but don't get their haircut by her but not that big of an issue. BUT it is unfortunate because I had an expectation after talking to her, and it just sadly wasn't met. The girl who cut my hair didn't speak any English (which is fine) but I essentially sat down "what do you want" and then no other words even a "you're welcome" after. The woman washing hair was lovely and really thorough. My hair is clean and cut pretty well but smells like burnt hair. ): Anyways, might work for you so def give it a try. Especially if you have different textures.

They told me honest recommendations and helped me get what I wanted in time for my wedding I'm so thankful I definitely will be back and highly recommend this place I loved my experience. It's very clean nice and will priced. My best friend recommended this spot to me and I appreciate it so much thank you!!

It is where I was introduced to Dazzle Dry (DD), my preferred nail polish system, and where I realized doing my nails can actually be relaxing. I really enjoy their intimate set up (only two nail stations) and the biggest pro for me...no acrylic/chemical smell. They also do hair, facials, waxing, and massages, though I haven't experienced these services. The Dazzle Dry manicure is $30 while the pedicure is a bit more at $65. The service is so meticulous and gentle, it takes a full two hours. Their technique is different than what I have experienced in the neighborhood and their service is consistent. It truly feels like you are getting pampered and my hands and feet look brand new everytime. Sava is such a treat and well worth the price. If you've never tried DD before, it's vegan and said to last two weeks without chipping. This is mostly true, but of course gel (which they recently started to also do!) is king when you are going to be super active and in water. DD is perfect for day to day, and Sava has an extensive collection of colors. The owner, Iwona, is a fantastic technician, as is Monika. Love them both, and catching up with them is always fun during my service. I look forward to continuing to support this lovely business and feel lucky to have them close for my nail care needs. Ps- Call in advance for an appointment, especially during the holidays. They are closed on Wednesdays! Pay in cash and save some coins.

I heard about both of them from my current hair stylist who said Roxan is the best for updo and anyone she hires for makeup is great. She did not lie. I paid my deposits for both of them and showed up at 11am sharp for my appt. I got my hair washed and i was out in the dryer with rollers while i waited for roxan. When my hair was dried, i got my makeup done and Roxan styled another client. After my makeup was done she styled my hair. She was honest about what would work and not work for my hair as my hair is very long but fine. And she added hair and things to make it look fuller. I left feeling beautiful and my son even called me a princess! It's now Sunday night and my hair is still intact, i don't want to undo it because i love it and have been sleeping with a bonnet and it looks exactly the same ! The makeup didn't budge at all until i washed it off. I will def be back for all future events. I loved the work and how convenient it was to get my hair and makeup done at the same location!

DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE IF YOU CAN'T SPEAK SPANISH. IF YOU CAN'T, YOU WILL BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF…read moreAND RIPPED OFF!!!!!!!!! This is quite a tale, but worth the read if you want to make a crucial decision. I am -far- from racist, but I was absolutely appalled by the way I was treated. Firstly, this is a ridiculously busy salon, so I guess they didn't need my business - just saw an opportunity to take advantage of someone nice. I went in at noon. None of the salon chairs were available; a woman was getting her hair done in a dining room chair in the center of the (tiny) lobby, therefore, I had no access to the reception desk (mind you, they don't even have a receptionist!) I went into this wide-eyed, happy to contribute to a community business and get a rockin' new do, but was thoroughly disappointed. I tried to get a price quote before starting the "project", but I couldn't hold anyone's attention long enough to get an answer - and there was no access to their front desk! I had asked for 2 colors put into my all natural hair (just purple for the middle layer, and black for the bottom layer.) Once I sat down in the chair and tried communicating with the stylist (who "spoke no English", along with EVERY OTHER EMPLOYEE THERE. INCLUDING THE OWNER! [looking back, I strongly believe this was all bullsh*t.]) She asked to see a picture of what I wanted done to my hair. I showed her a picture, she then proceeded to dye the bottom layer black. She then proceeded to bleach the middle layer of my hair (to help hold the purple dye, I guess?) but did not consult me about anything. I had no idea what was going on and no one was willing to try to communicate with me. All of a sudden, she washes the bleach out, applies the purple, and tells me she needs to bleach the top layer of my hair (which came out way too orange... I tried asking her about toner, but once again, was IGNORED!) I asked for a price estimate THREE times (beginning of the process, and twice during,) and was continually ignored. The one response was "it's up to boss". I had faith in these people because they seemed nice enough, but I was horribly pissed off when they came up with this "magic number". My hair came out OK, but NOT. AT. ALL. WORTH. $400!!!!!!!!!!!! And NOT what I ASKED for. They over dyed my hair without asking me and it was horrible. How am I supposed to dispute a bill (that wasn't even a "bill", just a nice other client translating to me that the total was $350, w/o "tax" and tip.) I ended up spending 5 hours in the salon, and a good bit of that time I was STANDING around awkwardly waiting. I was completely taken advantage of and I advise none of you to go here. I could've gotten my hair done at any fancy salon downtown for cheaper. The owner checked me out charging half to her iPhone CC scanner, and then the other hundreds in cash... so who knows where the money really went. I've never been more disappointed or felt more taken advantage of than coming to this place. HUGE let-down. :/
