It's been a minute since I posted a or taken a #selfie but today will be an exception to support mi gente at Bella Lounge Salon. It's been a few years since Ive been to a Dominican salon. Juana up in the heights had the best blow out for your buck in her tiny ass apartment. She got so big she put a public restroom in her living room, aside from her apartment. I didn't have the patience to wake up early, pray for a spot and spend hours talkin bochinche with the other women. Since then I ventured out other salons throughout the city. In need of a haircut and self esteem boost, Bella Lounge Salon was a refreshing find in my new hood. The space is small but contemporary and the stylists are sweet with the quintessential Dominican charm and hospitality. Marisola gave me a wonderful blow out and haircut. She cut my hair dry which was unconventional to me but I was amazed how my layers blended in the end. After the cut she used a flat iron to add texture and waves, which again, was unconventional but I really loved how it turned out. At the end the damage was 65 which is about a third to half less then I would pay anywhere else in lower Manhattan. I could not be more pleased. read more

So disappointing I was really looking forward to having highlights by Marisol. Something went wrong with the color and my hair went orange/red at the roots from there it just got worse. I have no highlights my hair is damaged from over processing. Marisol went back into foils a second time and added more color. When that didn't work Marisol added three different colored toners. I am left with muted dull brown/blonde brittle dull hair without any highlights. I was there a long time from 11a to 3p. read more

It's been hard to find a decent hair salon and I came across Bella Lounge Salon and decided to give it a go. Probably my worst mistake!! The lady who washed my hair scratched my whole scalp with her nails. The Lady who did my hair Marisol Lorenzo was very unprofessional. I used to have long hair and bc of damage from my previous stylist I had to cut it short which my hair is pass my shoulders. Well Marisol in front of the other clients thought it was funny to say "you barely have hair" in a laughing manner when I was asked whether I should blow dry or go under the hair dryer. I should've left that moment but really wanted to get my hair did so I push myself to sit down on her chair. When she sat me down as I ask her for tips on how to take care of my hair I noticed she took a comb and brushed her own hair !!!! And then proceed to put that same brush on my hair. I was baffled since I never experience something like this. I am introverted so it's hard for me to speak up sometimes especially since I've been going through a lot with my hair. After expressing to her how I'm allowing my hair to grow I noticed she applied excessive heat on my hair and in between doing my hair she left outside to pick up a call and was distracted with what food she should get with her coworker. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Especially if you're going to see Marisol to do your hair, very unprofessional. The place itself looks really nice, but If you're deciding to come here I would save that trip from disappointment. And as good hearted as I am I still gave her a tip. read more

Curly girls avoid! I didn't want to go all the way downtown to my usual salon for a curly cut. I'm usually not that fussy about my hair, after all, it grows back and what's the big deal? My whole experience at this salon changed my mind. 1. They don't know how to cut curly hair properly. * the stylist took a brush to my dry head of curls. I couldn't believe it. She didn't even spritz it! It was clear she was having a bad day, and man did she start to pull. * I believe she was intent on taking her anger out on someone and I just happened to be there. In my decades of getting my hair cut, I've never been treated so harshly. I even yelled "hey you're hurting me!" My hair looked like straw and still does weeks later. * My stylist gave me a terrible cut that I can only describe as "the pyramid". 2. Negative attitude. * They double booked the stylist and then blamed her when she was falling behind. * I feel like a smart business owner would realize that they live in a multi-cultural city, and try double their business by making an effort to make everyone comfortable. The customer service was so bad. No one greeted me. They just stared at me when I walked in the door. I finally had to ask, "why are you staring at me?" * A smart business owner would have one bilingual on staff and spend about 2 minutes per client making sure communication is clear. Again, they could double their business, but they don't. The overall attitude in this salon could improve tremendously if they started with this idea. "You're not the enemy if you speak Spanish. I have had so many hair disasters in my time and I'm happy to say that I have finally found a hairstylist who is extremely talented and honest in their capabilities specific to your hair type. After getting a complete botched touch up at another location, a friend of mine recommended that I set up an appointment with Melissa at Bella Lounge Salon because she works magic and the recommendation was 100% accurate! I came in with 3 different tones in my hair that did not blend - and to make matters worst, the balayage that I wanted was instead a really bad blotchy ombré. I really had no hope. Melissa was able to correct the color by darkening the roots to get the balayage effect I wanted and blending the remaining blonde tones. She made the impossible, possible! She even trimmed my ends, which she did little by little while ensuring that I was ok with the length, instead of just chopping away. I was beyond pleased with the service provided here. In addition to amazing hair, some other perks are being able to easily book an appointment online, the hairstylists only work on one customer at a time, the interior is clean and neat, and to top it off they offer water/wine while getting your hair done. read more

I have been here a number of times, and I do not plan on returning. First, some of the women here talk a lot of non sense with their half compliments. Second, I was overcharged. There is one price on the website, but when I was done, they wanted to charge me an additional $20. When I told the owner, he was upset and said that was a typo on the website. The first time they got me for that extra $20, but not this second time. OH, AND I TIPPED THE GIRL VERY GENEROUSLY! Third, I schedule an appt., and I called to ask a question. Like two hours later, I get a text that the appt. was cancelled. When I called to ask why it was cancelled, the owner said the lady was going to be out that day. Really? Quick, and extremely attentive even on a late, busy Friday! I always leave feeling 100% satisfied and my hair lasts over a week! The stylist who worked with me, who I believe is also the owner even managed to fix my length after having a terrible haircut months back. Great hands, great service and convenient location! So I called for a last minute appointment. They had some time so I went in. The woman who washed my hair was skinny with caramel blonde hair. I didn't get her name. She "washed" my hair and by that I mean the water went everywhere. She was talking while washing my hair and got water in my ear not once but FOUR times. I have NEVER had that happen to me at a salon before. I was shocked. She then asked me to hold the towel over my ears and still she got water in my ears. I was very concerned that she would be cutting my hair. So I asked if she was and a different woman with glasses did. She didn't understand any English and I kept showing her half inch and even when someone else told her what I wanted in Spanish she was still confused. I was terrified to have this woman cut my hair. The way she blow dryed it hurt my hair. It was burning! She was using a typical roll brush that's fine. However she then went into a drawer and took out another one. This one was tiny and had SO much hair in it. It was filthy! I did not want that going through my hair. So I did my best to say I would prefer the clean one from before. She gave me a straight part even though I said I wanted a side one. She pointed out that some of my hair pieces were quite shorter than the others. I had to specify to only cut a little off the ends and that was it. When I paid before I left the woman who washed my hair called me back and I thought maybe I didn't tip enough even though I tip very well even in bad situations. She simply wanted me to leave a great review. No. This was a last minute and clearly desperate decision of mine. While the cut turned out ok I will not be back. I thought I had finally found a good hair salon for myself but I'll just have to keep looking. read more

If you are not fluent in Spanish, this place is not for you. This is a Spanish-speaking salon, and while a minimal Spanish vocabulary might be sufficient at a restaurant or grocery store in the neighborhood, when speaking with a stylist, you need to be able to understand each other fully. Beyond the language barrier, I was not particularly impressed. I chose this place because I expected a $40 haircut to be better than a $20 haircut, and to be fair, I've never had a $20 haircut, so maybe it was... but I won't be going back. It wasn't any better than something I could do myself. I now understand what spending the extra $40-50 at a downtown salon gets me (better technique, better shape, someone who at least pretends to care about my hair...), so I will be doing that in the future. read more

What a lovely salon! I walked in and was able to be seen right away for a haircut. Everyone was masked, the door was left open, and I was even given a new mask to wear while in the salon. Marleni (sorry if I spell your name wrong!) and Marisol both worked on my haircut and it turned out wonderfully. (I really appreciate that the staff helps each other out if one of them is stronger in cutting a certain style than the other. To me, that shows a commitment to giving the client the best possible experience.) My cut is great, they styled it well, and everyone was super friendly. I am such a nervous person when it comes to my hair and who I let cut and dye it, i took a chance with Marisol and she was amazing! She suggested I put toner in my hair which I felt I needed but wasn't sure so that's not something I had asked for but she was right I definitely needed the toner. The staff is friendly and very accommodating if you have your car parked at a meter like I did. I recommend booking online ahead of time so you're not stuck waiting a long time especially on a Saturday and at least you're guaranteed to be seen. read more

I'm a regular client of Bella lounge ever since it began . I live in New Jersey and It takes me over 30 min to get there. But is so much worth it!!! Marisol and her team are Fantastic, courteous and very attentive. It is great to feel pampered while getting your hair done. What attracted me to the salon in the first place was the beautiful modern interior. What has kept me as a customer is the exceptional customer service and how great my hair always looks when I walk out of there. My stylist recommended a specific cut/color and it was outside of what I typically go with but she was so right. I absolutely love it. Terrible service. Do not go here unless you speak Spanish or just want your hair washed and blow dryed. I needed to have my hair done for an event and was in a time crunch so I called to see if I could come in the same day. When I called, I said I wanted my hair dyed and cut. The man was very friendly and accommodating on the phone and asked if I wanted to come in the same day. I showed up for my appointment and a girl began washing my hair. At this point I'm thinking she's washing my hair to get it wet so that she can cut it. Then, I'm sitting down and a girl starts blow drying it. While she was blow drying, I told her what color I wanted. At first she just kept nodding and smiling and continued drying. When she finished, I said to her again that I wanted my roots colored to match the rest of my hair. She was extremely confused and didn't understand me. A customer in the chair next to mine told the woman in Spanish what I was trying to say. She told me to make an appointment at which point I told her again that I was there to get my hair colored. The man from the front desk came up to me and said that I said I just wanted my hair washed. I was upset and told him that nobody asked me what I came in for. This created a huge fuss and then she agreed to do it. I should have walked out then. The woman coloring my hair didn't understand that I wanted my roots dyed to the same color as the rest of my hair. I got frustrated and told her to just dye my entire head my natural hair color. She still did not understand! Another girl came over and they began to argue about what I wanted. They said they couldn't do partial highlights and had to dye my entire head again! The woman began by bleaching my roots. She didn't just stop there, she began bleaching the part of my hair that did not need any work. The same girl from before ran to me and she began doing my hair and seemed very annoyed. I was really stressed out that they would mess up my hair and I would have to pay even more to get it fixed. While she was coloring my hair I could tell the women were making side comments about me. When I was getting ready to leave I could see in the mirror that one of the employees, Marisol, was making hand gestures to the girl blow drying my hair. She was basically telling her to leave my hair as it was so I could leave. In the end they charged me way too much money $125 for just coloring my roots. If she had done a good job I wouldn't have been upset for paying that much money. My hair was extremely brassy, orange and splotchy. The back looked as if it had barely been touched. Extremely unprofessional. I will not be going back. read more

I went yesterday after having had a terrible dye job from another salon a few months prior, and Marisol worked wonders to revert my hair to what it had been before. It took a combination of balayage, color correction and lowlights - but it ended up perfect. I would have to say the worst thing about my visit was the fact that I had a 930 am appointment and my stylist didn't start my hair till 11:30 am. So yes I was annoyed at that but as soon as she started working on my hair I quickly forgot about it. My hair was done by Yohanni and let me tell you my hair had gone through a lot the last year. She was very patient and took all the proper steps to preserve the health of my hair. They use olaplex which is a big plus because many salons don't carry that product for bleaching. I actually feel like my hair was healthier after I left the salon. Yes there may be a language barrier but it's all worth it and if you don't like it well go to another salon. These ladies are all hard working let me tell you there was no small talk amongst them and they kept turning out clients as quickly as they could. But I would recommend a front desk person from open to close because it just nice to get there and be greeted as opposed to the stylish figuring out who's there for who. My hair came out great and i'm very happy. But keep in mind this may be a salon in Inwood but it's not cheap they use great products so it's going to be pricey but as I said all worth it for the best results read more

When I first went to Bella Lounge, I really thought it was a great place. Different from what the other hair salons offered in terms of ambiance. I followed my stylist from another salon after she was solicited to work for Bella Lounge by the Manager. My first impression as mentioned above was of it being nicely decorated, clean. Parking in the area, like most of Inwood/Washington Heights, is atrocious, and that's an understatement. On my many weekly visits, I waited for over an hour to find parking, going in circles, and many times just wanting to give up, but being that I love how my stylist does my hair, I would often acquiesce to keep trying to find parking. There is a gas station that offers parking for $10.00 across the street , but because the restaurant adjacent to it has priority for valet parking, often times parking will not be available, especially on weekends. As far as service is concerned, my stylist has always given me exceptional service at reasonable pricing. She has close to 20 years of experience and is very intuitive in learning new styles. I have followed her to many places she has worked because of her styling experience, courtesy and reasonable pricing. My only con, is that in seeking her services, there are many times I have a long wait, especially Saturdays, because of the amount of clientele she has. While waiting is not what most of us want to do, the amount of clientele she has shows how much other clients like her services, so it is a testament that you will be getting exceptional work on hair. That and the ambiance of the Bella Lounge prompted me to not focus on the horrible lack of street parking, or the wait. Unfortunately after many months of going to Bella Lounge, I witnessed on more than one occasion the unprofessionalism of the manager towards the other hair stylist and hair washers. It was so egregious that another client had to try and remind the manager that she was being unprofessional arguing in such a way in front of clients. It seemed like a personal issue was ensuing between them that escalated in the manager not knowing how to diffuse the situation in a calm professional manner. Then there was the issue of pricing. My stylist has always worked on a percentage of her work, meaning if she charged a customer $65 for root coverage, she received 55% while the salon, received 45%. Apparently after some time, the manager was emphasizing to her that she was charging her customers to little and that she needed to charge them more. The stylist reminded her that when she solicited her to work there with her she explicitly told her and the Senior Manager that she will not over charge her current clientele, if new clients would want her service she agreed to charge the pricing the lounge would like. How would I know this,? Well this was the issue that the manager so unprofessionally argued in front of some of the customers still being serviced. The one thing that Bella Lounge emphasizes in their introduction on their website is that "they are different than the other area salons, where the ambiance is of professionalism, free of any drama, etc. When I read that, I did question why would any business indicate that on their website. Be that as it may, just recently my stylist was asked to leave because she refused to do her clients wrong at the behest of the manager. who also imposed these ridiculous rules on the stylists such as that they could not wear skirts or dresses, they could not wear red lipstick and many other ridiculous demands. While most would probably not care of these situations, I felt compelled to state them because as a professional myself, regardless of any personal issues I may have with someone, when you work with them, you allow them to do their job, service their client as they always have, conforming to of course some reasonable change that the new place may need.. I may sound bias in this aspect, but I feel compel to mention this because frankly I think it would be something that no person who just wants to get serviced by getting their hair done should witness. Perhaps going forward that would not be the case since the personal animosity the manager had with my stylist would not be present as she has left. Also, if you are new to Bella Lounge, meaning you are not a current client of the Manager there, who is one of the stylist and another stylist who works there, make sure you ask for the price of whatever service you would like first. The pricing their can be ridiculously exorbitant considering the area in which it is located. She wanted my stylist to charge me the wash and set separately from the root coloring, which would have total close to $125.00. Not only did i find that expensive, although I could very well pay it, it was the principal of the thing knowing that I was a client for many years of my stylist and not of the lounge. I'm glad my stylist has left. Don't let the modern interior fool you. read more
