Totally awesome. Came back when we returned to the area a year after the comment below, and we were more than pleased. Called ahead and our table was waiting for us. The chef provided a interesting starter and we ordered 4 different entrees that were all excellent. I had salmon that was cooked to perfection. The spring roll appetizer was outstanding and the cardamom turmeric ice cream for dessert was phenomenal. This is a "must" if you are in the area and looking for a fine meal. Original 2015 comment. Came in for the Thursday night burger and beer special ($10 burger and 1/2 price beer). Service was friendly and efficient, but I felt I knew more about the special than our server did. There is a lot of reference to their farm to table mission in the decor. The tables are set with fresh flowers, and several paintings on the walls. There were a few diners, but it wasn't over crowded or too busy. They were struggling to keep the restaurant warm during the cold snap. There were space heaters scattered about in strategic places to keep customers warm. Not a huge beer selection; bottled beers were emptied into glasses served that way. There was only one burger offered on the special, which was quite good. Nicely prepared and presented. However, the side salad was the most pathetic I've ever been served. A few lettuce leaves and some chopped tomato with a drizzle of dressing. The side salad was by far the most disappointing part of this meal. I really expected more from La Ferme. In all, it was a decent meal for the price, but I would not choose their version of a side salad again. read more

Delicious!! The cozy atmosphere, creative menu, solid wine list, and friendly staff are a winning combination! This was an unexpected experience on our lake-town vacation. We had devja vu of our favorite intimate restaurants from Kansas City to Sonoma! Take the serves suggestions of their best seasonal dishes-- they won't steer you wrong! A high end eating experience, without any pretentious vibes. Attire was anywhere from clean-casual to nice-date-night. As out of town'ers, we wish we would have note of the 9pm closing time, and consider making a reservation. Will do so next time, as we're sure to be back! read more

The staff was friendly and professional. They knew the food and drink menus well. The food was excellent. We had apps, mains and dessert - everything was delicious without being fussy. La Ferme is my all time favorite place to get lunch in the Alexandria area. Farm fresh and there isn't a full or bad option on the menu. called in an order, was told 10 minutes for lunch carryout at 2 on a Wednesday, great arrive i'd say 10 - 15 minutes later, there's maybe 5 people in line ahead of me, yet about 15 minutes later i'm still waiting for three elderly women in front of me. There was a woman helping give out orders, who I made eye contact with and didn't help me. I get it its not her "exact job" to help the carryouts but when you see a person standing for a long period of time suck it up and help them. No eye contact, despite being steps away from the person behind the register and repeatedly trying to make eye contact. And no in a busy restaurant i'm not going to make a scene and yell out my order, i'll just leave as it's ridiculous non exsistent service and not worth a half hour plus long wait for a damn sandwich! Put a sign up that says ORDER WHEN READY or teach people at the register to move on to the next person if they need a minute to look at the menu OR STOP BEING CHEAP AND EMPLOY MORE STAFF as i work in a restaurant and seriously don't even understand how it takes that long to move through 5 people absolutely ridiculous!Not to mention a man came in and went to the other side of the line and the young male at the register helped him even though he was clearly jumping the rest of the line. Over hyped overpriced ridiculousness.Needless to say i left without my food as i seemed clearly not worth their time or attention. The man at the register did not make eye contact with me not one time in that 15 minute time period again even though i was literally right behind the counter, i even moved a few times to make sure he saw me and i thought that possibly the women had already ordered after so long of standing there then i realized they hadn't as they had their money in hand, and he continued helping them while simultaneously ignoring me. A polite i'll be with you in just a moment have to help these women first would have been more professional, as with the line literally not moving that was my best guess as to why. Working in restaurants for several years i've been taught VERY clearly to greet people the minute they come in the door and help them with in a minute, nothing more frustrating then being clearly ignored and a line thats literally not moving. I'm normally a vocal person but making a scene in a crowded restaurant is not my cup of tea so needless to say i won't be going here any time soon. That and i did move to the other side where they claim this sign was and was still ignored, if there was a sign it was poorly displayed as their customer service. read more

Wanted to love this highly rated restaurant more. Spendy, yes, but if it was worth it that would have been fine. There was rock music playing at the front entrance by the bar, which was unexpected. We had reservations and were seated promptly. It was quiet in the dining area, but 79 degrees. We turned down the thermostat ourselves. We had to ask for water refills several times. We would have appreciated a carafe of water on the table, especially given how hot it was in the dining room. We placed our orders and I asked for wine recommendations. The answer was a clear sign the server was unfamiliar with wines, a nervous, "they're all good, the chef picks them himself for his guests." Right. The server had no idea what pairs well with what we just ordered. Suffice to say that the rest of the meal went the same way, with the server being very nice and nervous, but not very professional and not attentive (empty water glasses, empty bread basket without being offered more) as would be expected at a restaurant of this caliber. Overall the food was presented nicely. We received a lovely "amuse bouche," a taste of what was to come and a nice surprise before dinner. Although the fish portion was small, without a lot of flavor, it was tender and fresh. The steak was tasty, with flavorful seasoning and paired well with the garlic mashed potatoes. It would have been nice if the bread was served warm, instead of room temperature. There are many knit-pickable things, from the misspelling and mispronounciation of "accoutrements" -- it's a word on the menu -- to the silk screened t-shirts worn by wait staff. There were other small things as well, from the way our bill was presented and processed to the way the plates were served. Based on the menu and its prices, La Ferme is poising itself to compete with 4-star restaurants. Unfortunately, the staff isn't positioned to deliver that level of service. As we left out the back door there was a young woman playing keyboard on the back patio, which was quite pleasant. We listened only briefly but she seemed very talented. There is a lot of potential here, but a fancy menu like this deserves a better wait staff. It's an odd pairing of fancy menu, fancy prices and t-shirts and rock music. We like to see small businesses succeed and we recommend more staff training with lower interim prices. We would like to see La Ferme elevate its game and deliver a top-notch dining experience. We had 4 dinners and 2 desserts for $115 pre tip. read more

Eight of us decided to have dinner here on 12/9/17. The ambiance & service were excellent. The house red & white wines were very good. I personally ordered the Cuban sandwich, and oh my goodness, it was melt-in-your-mouth fantastic. But I really wish I would have ordered the Gnocchi (with winter squash, sage, pumpkin seeds)! I came here with a large group for my wedding rehearsal dinner, and it was a delight. The food was delicious, and the wine paired very well with what they served. My mother is gluten free and they were more than happy to accommodate. The chef, Matthew, was wonderful to work with and he came out and discussed what he was serving. My husband and I were on our annual visit to Glenwood to see family and found this restaurant through Open Table. We were really impressed with the menu so thought we'd try it out. There was some construction so it was a little difficult finding it and parking but once we did, we were very pleased. All the dishes were well thought out and executed excellently. We had walked past La Ferme earlier in the day Friday 9/18 while browsing Broadway's shops and decided on it for dinner. I was initially skeptical because we were in a rural MN town and it seemed slightly out of place. We were pleased we were able to get a table without a reservation on a Friday night. The service was friendly, courteous and professional. The menu was creative and well thought out. We appreciated the portion sizes and the freshness of the dishes. The only unfortunate part was that we weren't incredibly hungry so we shared some dishes. We started with a cheese plate (it had gruyere, what seemed like a French triple cream such as delice & probably Comté). We also ordered the scallops with squash broth & pork hock - delicious! The kitchen automatically split the dish into 2 plates without us asking (which we appreciated). The wine & beer list was adequate and we liked that they had many local brews. This is a nice intimate place to have dinner. We celebrated our anniversary there. Jennifer is the general manager and was awesome. Great sense of humor and very personable. We came for dinner. To sum it up...slow service and overpriced for Alexandria MN. I receive better portions at better prices in Manhattan... with better service. Cheese plate contained 3 small cheese portions for $9. Dinner was served 1 hour after we came in and was cold. To be fair, 2 out of 3 dinners had great flavor...but again slow and cold on the 3rd. They did remove some cost of meal and the people were very nice. Just disappointed in what we thought was going to be a great experience. read more

Reclaimed wood and antiques accent the relaxed atmosphere. Servers are friendly and attentive in this intimate downtown space. The wine list is small yet well curated and there are also some great beers available. If you are in a hurry, this place is not for you. This is the kind of place you sit down with friends and a bottle or two of wine and lose track of a few hours. The very best experience you can have here, in my opinion, is at one of the special events La Ferme hosts monthly. Extraordinary Food in an Unexpected Location Thanks to Yelp we found this restaurant while staying overnight in Alexandria, MN. The amuse bouche was lamb sausage with an olive tapanade. Next came a lovely duck confit. Our entrees were a flat iron steak with a red wine reduction, mushrooms and red potatoes and a summer pasta with corn, squash, tomatoes, and fresh parmesan. Even though the portions were hearty, we saved room for the tres leches cake served with rum, fresh raspberries, and a healthy dollop of fresh whip cream. We had wine by the glass which complimented our entrees. If I ever happen to pass this way again, I will make a point of enjoying another meal here. Great service and wonderful food. Don't miss it. Excellent food - try it. Nice job Chef! Brussel sprouts were roasted with the addition of bacon and balsamic sauce - excellent. The soup du jour was tomato bisque - delicious. Of the foursome in our party, we ordered the gnocchi (good), steak (didn't taste, but he said it was very good), poached cod special (fantastic) and braised lamb (fantastic). The apple tart tatin for dessert was shared among all and was very good. The only negative was there was only one waitress and it was a bit much for one person to handle. One person in our party ordered a dinner salad that we never got (and were never charged for). But other than that, the food and the restaurant itself made for a great evening. read more

On july 13 we went there for our wedding anniversary. I ordered the lamb and my wife ordered the steak. The lamb was very tough. I elec ted not to eat it. My wife ordered med rare and it came medium to med well. We were offered another meal but chose not to wait. The waitress took off 25% from the bill. My friends had the Tuscan Grilled Cheese sandwich ( she adored it!) and Bizzo Burger ( other friend loved!) we were there for a late lunch on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in October! We got to see the evening menu and there are several items I'd love to come back & try!!! Not a lot of seating would be my only issue. My now husband and I had the pleasure of being married at La Ferme on January 30th. Chef Matthew and Amber did an amazing job of putting together a beautiful day for us! Not only did Amber have everything set up for the ceremony, but she also set a beautiful table for our party of 20. We had appetizers and a champagne toast after the ceremony, followed by a beautiful 3 course dinner with FANTASTIC wine pairings. Amber told a story about each wine and Chef Matthew described each course of our meal. My family was BLOWN away by the food and wine. It was small and intimate and made for the perfect non traditional wedding day. It was completely stress free and magical! The chef even prepared vegan meals for family members who could not partake in the normal fare, which were beyond delicious! We were able to mingle and relax before dinner and afterwards. Thank you so much Amber and Matt! You both made our day so special! I would highly recommend their services and this restaurant for any special event, especially a small wedding!!! My husband and I came here for the first time last Friday night. It was nice to be able to walk in and get a table without a reservation, although, I'm guessing during the summer months, a reservation will be necessary. We loved our food experience! We are both gluten free and found that there were multiple choices for us on the menu. We started with the turkey tomato soup that was delicious. It had a smokey flavor that we'd never tasted before. I wanted the recipe so I could make it at home! For our entree we went with the seafood special, Sea Bass and the beef special, the New York strip. Both entrees were delicious and full of flavor. We paired our meal with a local red wine from Burr Vineyards, which has now become one of our new favorite wines. We will definitely be ordering a few bottles to keep at home. For dessert we had the chocolate molten cake with homemade vanilla ice cream. It was perfection! We even sampled the flavor of the day ice cream which was basil. We liked it but opted for traditional vanilla with the cake. Overall, we really enjoyed our dinner. The only downside to our experience was the speed of service. Everything took a really long time. It took about 10 minutes just to get our glasses of wine, and the whole dinner took about 2-3 hours. It's a good thing we didn't have anywhere else to be. The price is up there, but understandably so. You're getting a local, farm to table, professional chef experience, which is such a treat! Thanks, La FERME! We will be back. read more

Stopped in for quick lunch with the girls, the scallop chowder was outstanding! Chicken salad sandwich was great, Italian sandwich was nice had nice variety and fresh toppings. The Cuban had a nice mix of pork and not to mustardy. The ice tea was outstanding! Raspberry ice tea is real tea with some raspberry sweetness that was very refreshing!
