I've been to a few of the LA Fitness locations now, with the Troy one as my home base. I came to this one today because Olivia was teaching Zumba, and I have been slacking on my gym time lately. The layout is backwards compared to the Troy location but they also have a few more amenities, like a juice bar, which is cool. One of the nice desk people showed me where the locker rooms were too, which was good. There's lots of parking too and I had less of a walk to the front door which was also nice. Okay I am not a picky person or a very harsh person. However, I had a horrible horrible experience here yesterday. I went to the gym as recommended by two of my close friends. I came in for a tour after work, and just wanted to get pricing and a feel for the classes they had to offer. I have not been to a gym in over 4 years- so my intentions were to shop a few and then decide Monday. I told him this. The lady at the front desk was beyond rude. She did not make me want to feel welcomed. I actually wanted to just walk out. When I went to the table with the guy he was asking what I wanted out of the gym and I totally love that. Expect when it came to pricing and signing up he totally flipped the switch and was using it against me. "Well if you would've came in in the month you were thinking about it you would be 20 pounds down". I don't want to lose weight I want to maintain shape. He kept telling me the prices were going to go up on Monday and that if I didn't sign now I couldn't lock in the price... my friends have been there over a year and they pay the same price as I was quoted. Rude. When it came time to leave neither the trainer who was brought over to the table, or my sales guy stood up to see me out. I work in sales and I get the game but they were beyond rude. He did not even stand to see me out, or have a goodbye. I had to ASK if I could leave. "Is it okay for me to leave now?" I will most definitely not be coming there again. Even the other one-star reviews of this particular gym are far too kind. This location is the worst in the area, by FAR. It`s a pit quite frankly. They have no male attendant throughout the day, so the men`s locker room is trashed by mid-afternoon. Trashed = used Q-tips, soiled paper towels all over, empty hand and shower soap, some showers don`t get hot or have extremely low pressure. Broken lockers, towel racks in the showers that are lose. The garbage cans in the locker room are often overflowing to a point where used paper towels are being tracked all over. Just filthy and disgusting!!! One day there was a sign on the men`s locker room door "Female attendant in locker room." I was on my lunch hour - oh well, I hope she enjoyed the view. Here`s a novel, hire a male to cover that shift, or (and you don`t need a Ph.D. for this level of problem-solving) HAVE A MALE EMPLOYEE AT LEAST GIVE IT A CURSORY ONCE-OVER OUT OF RESPECT FOR YOUR DUES-PAYING MEMBERS! That`s just gym management 101 to me. On to the club. In the summer, the outside garbage can was always overflowing and the parking lot disgusting. Inside, I had to go to four stationary bikes the other day, just to find a bikes that had working seat adjustments and working toe clips. The pool: Many times they have allowed teenagers to horse plan, throw each other into swimming lanes that were in use - endangering the lives of those there for a workout. The water is murky and often cold. The hot tub is out of order for week one end, and they insist on keeping the door that divides the locker room from the showers open, which makes the shower area freezing cold (especially if coming from the pool). I have complained even at the corporate executive level, and NO RESPONSE. Unforgivable. So, maybe this will get their attention. I have no clue how this is allowed to continue. Hey LA Fitness, look into mystery shoppers or unannounced corporate visits. The location is convenient for me, but it is my least favorite location; by far! Where do I start? My b-friend started at this location when it opened several years ago. They put carpet in the locker rooms! I repeat, carpet in the locker rooms! After months of being open, their locker rooms started to smell like a dirty, spoiled wash rag. Gag! He complained several, and I mean several times! It took them YEARS to get that nasty carpet out and replaced with tile. Needless to say, the locker rooms no longer smell like funk. This is where their 1-star comes in. I would give this place a big, fat goose egg if I could. Fast-forward to last month, I started physical therapy with a local rehab center, and they farm out their 'aqua/hydro-therapy' to this LA Fitness location. My first thought was, this was going to be gross; and sure enough, they didn't let me down. Upon entering the pool area, I gasped mildly, because the chlorine gas was burning my ears, nose, throat and lungs! It was a Tuesday, so I figured they may have just gotten the pool cleaned and balanced. Well, that muck fest sure wasn't clean! It was definitely cloudy, which is usually a build up of algae growth, mold/yeast growth, and/or bodily waste from swimmers (such as oils, lotions, hair goo, etc.) I believe this pool was a combination of all 3! On the disabled chair to lower people into the pool, not only was it full of rust (because they over do it on the chlorine!) but the hose that was hooked up to the hydraulics mechanism was caked in algae growth. The algae growth is visible on the steps leading into the pool, and a definite ring of it all around the pool at the top tile level. After swallowing the small amount of vomit in my mouth, I took a deep breadth, and entered the pond. I mean pool. The therapy had me walking the length of pool, so I had nothing but time and things to look at. I noticed a glob of hair (probably a weave, since it was a good amount of hair, not unless there was a cat fight in the pool before I got there). Well, this glob of hair was stuck to the bottom of the pool with a UPC sticker. Now I didn't get close enough to read the sticker, but made a mental note to stay away from that hair glob. All I could imagine is someone else's hair getting stuck/tangled in my toes. Ghack! I also noted that the lane buoys had this gray grime on them. This is the bodily oils accumulating, that aren't properly eliminated from the water on a regular basis. They float around, they stick to an area of least resistance, this being the lane buoys. After pool therapy, my therapist recommended I sit in the hot tub for 5 minutes. I made my way over to it, and just saw a mass of foam in the middle of the water, with this dirt/grime on top. Kind of like the foam you get when you boil raw meat....I passed. On my way out, I spoke to the girl on duty, telling her about the algae, lane buoys, and especially the glob of hair stuck to the bottom. She politely apologized and said the pool gets cleaned weekly on Wednesdays. I returned on Sunday, the algae, grime, and glob were still there. I returned on the following Tuesday, 1 week to date, and alas, everything still in it's same state! I then asked to speak to a manager, a Ginger by the name of Mike, or was it Dave? Anyway, after telling him the above story (which I think he hears A LOT) instead of being apologetic, he immediately becomes argumentative, stating that HE KNOWS all this, but the algae and grime won't come out because they have a Southern Exposure window, so they put 2x the amount of chlorine that is recommended. I advised that he look into window shading, and he said corporate will not let him do that. I also explained that I was a former Health Inspector, and guidelines for public pool operations don't permit using extreme doses of chlorine when the pool would be opened to guests. And that algae is resistant to chlorine, so no matter if you try to keep it shocked on a daily basis, that won't do a thing for the algae. Also, and oil float hidden in the skimmer holes would help with the grime build up. Needless to say, he didn't want to hear a dang thing I had to say. I since visited other area LA fitness's with better experiences. I would not recommend this one unless you want a skin infections and tongue lashing from the Manager. Contacted the Macomb County Health Department and LA Fitness Corporate concerning this matter. Will post w/ updates, if any. read more

Not as bad as the others I have been to in Detroit but not the best. Pros: -standard size LA Fitness (meaning large but not extra large version with indoor track) lots of equipment and weights -two class rooms, one with 6 heavy punching bags -large spin room -pool with I think it was 4-5 lap lanes -locker room wasn't too dirty -sauna room -nice big showers that were clean Cons: -cardio equipment is dirty and gross and lots damaged -free weight area. Like all LA Fitnesses lots of weights left on gear and no cleaning off sweat by members. No one on staff making rounds to pick up or clean off. -unfriendly staff -men's locker room smelled like a used jock strap! Overall it's not the worst but not the best LA Fitness I've been to but I will be adding it to my list in the area that are acceptable to go to. read more

While I like that this location offers a lap pool and they have three separate exercise rooms which allows for more private space for 'doing your own thing', and they have decent hours (I really like that they are open for a little bit of time on holidays) I feel that they do not make good use of their space. The gym is very spacious, but they have the least amount of cardio equipment of any LA Fitness I have been too...and most of the others have individual TVs on each piece of cardio equipment and this one doesn't even have that. I believe there are maybe 15 treadmills in the entire gym, yet there are usually at least 2 out of order. And the out of order signs seem to be a common occurrence on most of the equipment. Good luck going any time after 5PM or in the New Year. The lack of equipment is seriously making me consider leaving for a competitor's gym. read more

They misrepresented and lied to me about the terms and conditions of the joining fees. I wasn't told upfront that i was signing a non-refundable agreement. I was told if I wanted to cancel at any time there would be no issues, and when I did cancel I was told there wasn't going to be any further charges made to my card. All lies and deceit! I was not informed on paper, digital, or even verbally the full terms of joining this gym before I signed the keypad. I was given nothing to read, there was no options provided to me upfront to read anything. John made it seem so simple and easy to get in and out of, that was the only thing he was clear about. Totally left out the part about the actual 3 day cancellation time frame (that corporate later disclosed to me). I was not given any paperwork or even shown the "agreement" they are now telling me I signed. I understand that this is a commission based industry, but to purposely withhold information that i know would of heavily affected my final decision on joining, is just a bogus business move on the company's part. I believe John knew that and that's why he purposely failed to share such pertinent information with me. Like would I really throw $280.00 down the drain if the full terms was disclosed to me. I would of just kept the membership without saying a word to anyone, or better yet just canceled my debit card before they could take anything from my account. So how can not one person in the whole company not care or even try to understand the fact that i was misled. What's worse about all this is everyone has been giving me the run around, from corporate on down to the store level. I have been polite to the six different people i've talked to and still I'm just being brushed off and given the run around, put on hold for long periods of time, transferred to someone else to talk to, still waiting for phone calls that are obviously not coming. I am a member of LAT Fitness 12 and Mound, Warren, MI. I love this place because of staffs friendliness, cleanliness and overall warm welcoming. The guy work there name Darren always try to make people happy, personally asks what we need, anything he could improve. There is also a guy name Jordan ( I think he joined newly) work very hard. Gym looks like it will be great on the surface. I worked out here for over a year.This is how it is actually run... When you tour the gym don't be shy and check the showers. Do it at lunch, and question the sales people about anything disgusting you see. If you think I am over exaggerating in this PLEASE see for yourself. They have a larger sales team then service team. What this leads to is.... Used Bandaids, Towels, Lint, Hair, tiny black flys etc all in the showers. I've never been in the showers and not seen one of these items on the floors or on the walls in the stalls. Also Mildew/mold in showers. They can not get enough pool chlorine, they love the stuff, and they love the smell of it. and as a result your eyes will never feel the same. They just love spending money on it for some reason. If you are swimming bring goggles. If you see them treating the pool wait at least 3-5 days until you use it. WEAR SWIM GOGGLES. Machines are not maintained, I've seen damaged machines that they allow customers to use for going on 6 months now. I'm confident someone will eventually be injured here if they don't know how to use machines correctly. The worst part about this is staff will walk past someone using a machine in a dangerous way and not offer any advice. Like I said earlier, its mostly sales guys, must not be in their job description The people working here are just in between jobs, they do not care. This isn't their long term career goal so you can't hold the conditions against them. But I do hold it against L.A. corporate for not having guidelines to staff these facilities correctly. When you go to cancel keep in mind you will be paying for 1-2 months after the date you cancel depending on the day you cancel. Sure they know they could just charge you up to the day you cancel and refund the rest BUT then corporate wouldn't make an extra dime off of you. I'm currently moving and just cancelled today. If they didn't have this ludicrous policy in place I probably wouldn't have been motivated to write this review. Those are the technical difficulties with this place. The pro's: The members are all generally well behaved polite humans. It is pretty fun to workout and people watch as dudes constantly hit on any girl doing squats. don't pay over $30 a month to go here. And if you have bluecross blueshield get the $25/month membership that allows you access to this location and lots of other gyms in the area. I think that Gilbert the manager had one too many creatine shakes this morning. He failed to honor the written contract on our guest passes and said typical things that unintelligent people in positions they interpret as powerful say like, "I'm the manager, I can do whatever I want" instead of honoring a contract that had his name on it. It's not a surprise that this piece of crap chain will be out of business in the next few years and Gilbert the Grape will be looking for another soulless company to work for so he can climb the corporate ladder and make 30k a year. The gym is great. They have so many machines and free weights I very rarely have to wait for anything. But as much as I like the gym I dislike the locker room. Employees are really nice. They didn't hassle me down when I asked for a guest pass. My main issue is that I got into an altercation with this Beta phag that kept snapping his fingers at me (to get my attention to use the bench machine while I was using it).... where I'm from, people don't get into an argument over a bench machine..but I guess most people from Michigan don't take working out seriously. Overall this is a great place to work out. It doesnt get too busy in the morning like some of the other gyms (5-6:30 AM on weekdays). The sauna is working 95% of the time, which is more than some of the other gyms can say. My only complaint is that the locker room can get overly dirty at times, and the paper towels seem to be empty every other week or so (usually on Mondays). read more

These people are scam artists, DO NOT sign up for the personal training unless you're prepared to go to hell and back trying to cancel it. Brad (the guy who made my account) LIED to me about what the contract entailed saying that I can cancel anytime. He later lied to me when I tried to cancel it, and said he did cancel it but come the next billing day I was of course charged. I only found out today after calling corporate that I actually cannot cancel any time and if I want to cancel now I would have to pay 50% left of the contract in order to cancel. That was never said when signing up! The only way around this is to mail (because they apparently don't have emails) a doctors note that says you can't physically work out or file for bankruptcy. Do not trust these people in any way, they will screw you over big time read more

I was a member of the LA Fitness in Livonia and I can tell you that the Warren location and the Livonia location are two different Gyms. Both gyms are supper busy between 4:30pm and 6:30pm but the Warren location is off the hook. Combine the number of people and the lack of weight machines and free weights your stuck waiting. The lack of machine cleaner is is terrible so people exercise and sweat all over the machine then dont clean them. The machines are old. This is a larger facility, so finding something for your workout is usually not too difficult. While it is hard for me to get to the classes during the week, Aqua Fit is a great choice. Location is kept up to date, and energetic atmosphere. read more

I went here for about a month and put up with the outdated equipment and stinky feet/butt smell mostly because I loved the option of a sauna and childcare. The staff is rude and does not greet or even smile at you. The daycare staff hardly looks after the kids. I've seen them with headphones in and talking on their cell phones. Unacceptable in my opinion. The reason I finally decided to cancel is because I participated in the free wellness visit with a trainer (Shane) who was very charismatic at first. But when I said I could afford the training at this time, he through all of the information I gave him in my face and made me feel like crap and told me I would not be successful at reaching my goals otherwise. I thought that was ridiculous. I've never felt so disrespected in what was supposed to be a professional encounter. I decided it was not worth my money to put up with such service, so I cancelled and would not recommend to anyone. read more

I was shopping around for a new gym, I was interested in LA fitness because it is a large gym and appeared to have a lot to offer. I scheduled a tour, when I sat down with the salesman he refused to tell me pricing because I wouldn't sign up right then. I had other appointments scheduled at other gyms. He asked me which gyms and I told him and again he told me that he couldn't tell me pricing unless I was ready to sign up right then. I felt really pressured and not heard. Since then they have called and left me 2 voicemails asking when I am going to pick up my complimentary pass, which I didn't even know was a thing and I wasn't offered one when I met with the staff. read more

I joined LA Fitness late last year after being a member of a smaller, 24-hour gym for quite a while. After going regularly for a few months now, I'm ready to write my review of this location and the Troy location, as I frequent both. My main motivation to join LA Fitness was the fact that they are building a new location in Royal Oak, less than a mile from my house. I went to check out their offerings in the pop-up informational storefront in downtown RO on Washington, and was impressed by the number of classes they offered, variety of cardio and weight machines, and pool. One thing that struck me immediately off the bat was how, for lack of a better word, shady the whole dues situation at LA Fitness is. I would prefer up-front presentation of fees and dues. I want to see a document that outlines all of my options, in writing, and I want all of those options available to any one who might be looking to join the gym. What you get instead is a piece of paper that the registration person then writes all over, crosses out prices, and seemingly arbitrarily makes up new prices. You cannot take that paper home with you to mull over your options. It's take those prices now or never, as they could seemingly change at any second. Lucky for me, the price I was offered seemed extremely reasonable (especially compared to the price I was paying at the much smaller gym I previously belonged to) and I feel like I got a good deal. I know others who haven't been as lucky. I have also not been approached once in the three months I've been there with anyone trying to sell me any personal training sessions. I would definitely not be interested in that. As for the Warren location.... they don't have as many cardio machines as they do at Troy, but that being said, I've always been able to get on a machine, even if it's not my first choice. They have about 12-15 treadmills, several types of ellipticals/crosstrainers, four Precor machines, and a few different types of bikes. They have two group classrooms, one seems to be dedicated to floor aerobics (step, kickboxing, bootcamp, etc) and the other, smaller room to yoga and Pilates. Having two classrooms means this location offers more classes than Troy, and I find myself coming here for group classes way more than I do at Troy. A few great workouts include the Thursday night Pilates and Thursday night Bootcamp, Saturday morning yoga, Friday morning Bootcamp, and the Club Boxing Circuit class. I also really like the Body Works plus Abs. The class styles vary wildly by instructor, even if they are teaching the same class according to the schedule, so if you aren't thrilled with your first experience, I'd recommend trying out another instructor. I haven't been in the pool or sauna yet, and I don't have a reason to use the Kid's Club services, so I can't comment on those. All in all, I'm happy with this gym. I haven't experienced any pressure or uncomfortable sales tactics since I joined, and I like the variety of equipment available to me. Te ability to switch up the training (doing different machines, attending yoga, kickboxing, etc.) really pushes you to use different muscles and work new muscles, and I am glad to have the wide array of choices available to me that LA offers. read more

I'm a swimmer and I chose a place that had a pool to work out in. I thought this was better than the Y since they are open for lap swimming almost all the time. But the pool is definitely not too fun to work out in. They keep the temperature the same as a hotel pool - which is great if I was there to hang out but not so good to actually move in. Second, the pool is really wavy. They don't have regular lap pool gutters which let the water roll into the gutters so all the waves bounce off the walls. Also, they don't tighten the lane lines so they do little to lessen the waves from the other lanes. When I asked the person at the front desk if they can tighten them, he said they were a set length. Being a former lifeguard I was like, huh? How do you get them in then? Low and behold - you can tighten them since they are standard lane lines and have to be tightened in the first place to be put into place! So, needless to say, this isn't a great place if you are looking to work out in the pool. Unless you are looking to train for a triathalon that happens to be in an outdoor lake in the tropics with lots of wind gusts. Then it would be perfect! I'm very glad I didn't pay very much in initiation costs so I won't feel bad switching to another gym. read more

I joined this gym because it was close to work, but left after a couple months for several reasons. 1. It is overcrowded. If you don't go first thing in the morning, plan to wait for use of all the equipment, especially the cardio. Your motivation definitely gets lost when you have to wait several mins between machines. 2. The free personal trainer session is just 45 mins of Elvis telling you how fat and unattractive you are followed up by a "crossfit-lite" workout which obviously well beyond your skill level. By the way, his use of the of the word "crossfit" is copyright infringement. 3. The womens locker room has a weird smell. 4. People sit on their phones at the machines and the staff does noting about it. Actually, the staff doesnt really do much of anything. read more

I came here on a guest pass with a friend who is a member and I can tell you that from the moment I walked in I knew this gym was mismanaged and overrun with customers. We went on a Saturday morning (10:30am) and there was only one person working the front desk, answering phones, responding to questions, etc. She as visibly overwhelmed but had to yell for a seemingly not busy coworker to come and assist her. Again, it was 10:30am on a Saturday and the gym was very busy, so I cannot imagine how busy it gets during peak hours. When I went to provide my information for my guest pass the girl tried to sell me a membership after I told her that I live across town and was not interested. That was annoying and a waste of my time. I asked her to not put my number on their "sales list" and she stated that she would not, but we shall see if I end up getting a "courtesy follow-up call". Now, in regard to the gym itself: the gym is a lot smaller on the inside than it appears on the outside, so most of the machines, weights, benches, etc are crammed into their respective areas. The free weight area is very disorganized in my opinion. There is the murphy press on one side while the squat racks are on the opposite side. In addition, I was under the impression that LA Fitness simply didn't request their patrons to wipe down the machines because I never saw any sanitizer or towels readily available. (Note: the girl who signed me in on my guest pass failed to disclose any information about the gym or anything). It wasn't until my friend went to get a paper towel and sanitizer from the opposite side of the gym that I realized it was even available. I also did not see any other patrons wiping down the machines after they were used, and none of the employees or management seemed to care. Their free weights are nice, but the resistance equipment leaves a lot to be desired. I have a membership at a smaller gym and I have had a membership at other larger chain gyms and I have NEVER seen equipment like the ones at LA Fitness. The resistance machines were clearly not calibrated correctly, the patrons did not appear to know how to use them so they were adjusted in very odd manners, and very few of the resistance machines have 5 lb increment adjustments. In all, I simply did not care for LA Fitness. If you absolutely need a pseudo-healthclub environment then you may enjoy it as they have a lap pool, racket ball courts, basketball court, sauna, showers, etc. But, if you are looking for a gym where you can work out with good, well maintained equipment and not be overrun by other gym patrons then this place is NOT for you. read more

This place is seriously disgusting. The men's locker room is filthy as all hell, anywhere from used paper towel thrown everywhere but the trash to underwear on the floor. There are such few machines and dumbbells, so good luck trying to get out on a timely manner because you'll be waiting a long time just to finish your workout. Oh and the drug deal I saw right in front of my eyes. I'm paying 34$ a month for a piece of garbage gym like this? No thanks. Go to any other gym or location. Employees are like used car salesmen trying to trick you into a purchase. After joining and their hyping their trainers (never mentioning additional cost), going through an evaluation for an hour (still no cost), they then sit you down and BAM "the additional charge for this is...". Say what? After filing a complaint, never even received the courtesy of a response. I suppose customer service isn't important to them at all. This place is absolute garbage. The "manager" Gilbert is extremely rude. Told us that our guest passes weren't valid because we didn't live within 25 miles of the gym. NO WHERE in the emailed guest pass does it say anything about that. He barked at us that because he's the manager he can do whatever he wants. What a great way to do business and represent the LA Fitness brand.... Corporate should be embarrassed. read more

This is the location closest to my house so I wish I liked it more but it's sort of, well, dingy. They have the older treadmills that don't seem to be accurrate most of the time. The stationary bikes are never accurrate. Some tune ups are needed on the speed guages, heart rate monitors, etc. The bathrooms get pretty trashed and it doesn't seem like they're monitored often enough. And the hot tub is really gross. Like, I will never go in it again. This should 100% be cleaned and drained more often. read more

This is a letter I sent to LA Fitness customer service: After attempting to cancel my gym membership multiples times by multiple different ways, I have been unable to. On April 2nd (Saturday) I spoke to a girl at the front desk of the Warren, MI gym who said she would let the manager (Matt) know I wanted to cancel and to call him back Monday. I called him back Monday and left a message for him, he never called me back. On April 12, I called Matt again and was finally able to speak to him about cancelling my membership. I explained what the girl at the desk told me and he said "well I don't care what the girl at the desk said, that's not my problem" and refused to cancel my membership, telling me to do it online. On April 14, I called customer service at the Royal Oak gym because the website wouldn't let me create an account to cancel my membership. Someone finally directed me how to cancel it online since the previous manager had refused to do it. I am just now filling out the form to mail in since I work 8-6 during the week and am unable to come in person to cancel. -The cancellation process at LA fitness is not customer-friendly at all and creating problems for members trying to cancel in a timely manner. -The manager, Matt at the LA fitness in Warren, MI was completely rude and unprofessional. If his employees aren't trained the correct way on cancellations than that should be his concern as well, although he verbalized it "wasn't his problem". -The initial reason I was cancelling my membership was because the gym in Warren, MI is very dirty, poorly managed (constantly broken machines) and lacks any type of customer service after several experiences with staff. -Being a registered dietitian in the area, I refer my patients to gyms all the time. After this extremely poor experience with a gym, I will NOT be referring any patients to LA Fitness and will be sure to share my poor experience with many other people. Thanks, Lauren read more

JUST DON'T. Find a place where you'll be treated with respect, advertantly and inadvertantly, this is NOT the place. You pay for services and they don't want to render or work with your situation, they are out to find a way to take your money enroll you in expensive training plans and not render the services you pay for. They take out money and cause over draft fees on days you didn't agree too. Corporate is very rude and basically shits on their members. It's not worth what you pay at all. Matt doesn't want to work with anyone, he's their complacent manager/vampire. Do yourself a favor and enroll somewhere where you will be treated as a person and not a dollar bill.
