You'll get a great full-body workout that builds strength, stamina, and improves your mobility. And it's FUN. If you come regularly you will experience results. Josh is the owner and so much more. He's also a kick ass coach and he does a majority of the programming. He keeps things spicy but all of the workouts are scaleable to your fitness level and ability. Josh is always encouraging and knows how to push you to be better, stronger and faster. If Josh is building an army, sign me up for the front line. The rest of the coaches are top notch as well. Chrissy, Heather, Cam, Phil, Marnie, JD, Shawn and Ali are all experienced athletes with the competence to instruct and push you. They will take the time to break down seemingly complicated movements to ensure proper form and make sure you are safe. The coaches are attentive and will ensure you get the most from your workouts. There's a huge priority on proper warm ups, stretching, form instruction, and scaling weights to your abilities. This makes it possible for new members and veterans to workout side by side and for everyone to get a great workout. On Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings, Courtney is the yoga/mobility instructor and she's phenomenal as well. The community at New Species is amazing. We cheer each other along and help push each other through difficult workouts. We hang out and chat after workouts. People organize outings outside of the workouts (happy hours, house parties, pickup games, etc.). These people are MY people. I'm not the fastest or the strongest. In fact, I'm usually towards the rear of the pack. But Crossfit isn't about that. Everyone supports everyone. We strive to get better, but no one tries to be better at the expense of someone not as capable. Since starting at New Species I've put on almost 10 lbs of muscle (while my pants size remains the same!) and have taken over 1 full minute off my comfortable mile time. I'm doing things I never dreamed I was capable of and at 36 years old I am in the best shape of my active life. Forget Disneyland, New Species just may be the happiest place on earth.

When I walk in I know that I will get amazing results and great coaches. Coach Adam has been an unbelievably amazing coach to me.. I am 100% deaf, and upon learning this, he immediately started to learn how to sign in American Sign Language. His inclusiveness really helped alleviate my fears as a deaf person in a mostly speaking environment. Communication is a key part of CrossFit and he helps remove those barriers so that everyone can reach their fitness goals. I highly recommend you to workout at Stars & Stripes CrossFit!

The general website states we can only cancel by calling the gym you signed up through. I called the Birmingham gym several times, NO ONE literally answers the phone. Ever, I left messages for weeks asking for a return call back to cancel my membership. I received an email several weeks later stating my membership will be charged shortly. I responded to that email advising I would like to cancel my membership. I received a call back FINALLY saying they will try to cancel my membership but couldn't make any promises. A few days later I received an email stating because I didn't not notify them within 30 days, they were processing my cancellation based off the email I responded to and then I would be charged for an additional month. I responded to email January 15th asking how I am expected to cancel my membership if they do not answer their phones calls or return my voicemails. I still haven't received a response. I honestly loved the work out sessions I received from the gym, but they way the business is handled and being Charged over and over because I am not able to cancel my membership. I have reported this to the better business bureau. This is not a legit way to handle business, it's very shady and alarming to me. Do not go here unless you want your money taken from you.
