Walking in to the small historic home the Village is known for, it was quaint, easy, home. The team behind the counter was so kind and quick! I got the Cuban Bowl that has Ropa Vieja and plantains. I just felt like the ropa was dry and underseasoned. The maduros (plantains) were good and the beans were seasoned with a bit too much cumin for my taste. I honestly cannot rate the food, because I had to cancel my order. I walked in to there being a short line with a group ahead of me ordering. The woman behind the register was new and seemed alone, and I had a lot of patience for her. I think her boss came up to man the register and take orders so she could get the kitchen moving, all totally fine. Unfortunately I witnessed a man walking in to pick up an order he had placed 30 minutes prior, the woman realized his order had not been started and he cancelled his order. I noticed the women that ordered right before me getting their food, so I walked up thinking my order would be next. I noticed a receipt with my name on it sitting on the printer, but thought it was a duplicate. Nope. They never started my order, and I was told it would be 15-20 minutes because there were orders ahead of me. I cancelled my order, I had to get back to work. They should be so embarrassed that this happened twice in the span of 30 minutes, with very few people in line to order. I want to support local spots, but you have to be good and be able to run a business. I wish I had just driven to one of my favorite places in Southwest. read more

Our friend who lives in the neighborhood took us to La Fonda recently. We'd previously been to the spot for coffee and bagels so it's fun to see how the space is evolving. The menu includes tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and bowls. I got a couple tacos, and Nate got a quesadilla. We also got an order of chips and guacamole to share. The food didn't take too long to come out, and everything looked tasty. I loved the asada tacos with nicely seasoned, tender steak, and the quesadilla was delicious and it came with a spicy salsa. I will definitely be back for more tacos or I'm interested in trying one of the bowls! The space for dining in is not very big, so it's a great option for takeout. read more

It can take awhile to get food on their busy days like Taco Tuesday. But that's really the only bad thing. And I mean awhile, I've waited 30-40 minutes for 3 tacos. Just depends. It's maybe 3 stars because their prices are generally ~$4+ a taco, but it's a local place I love supporting, they make it worth $4 the best they can, it's one of the *only* good restaurants in West Village, and their food's genuinely so good. We walked here for a very exciting taco Tuesday. The tacos included on taco Tuesday is anything pork and anything chicken we are very excited about both these options, so we decided to do both and add an order of Birra tacos with a quesadilla and churros. The service was courteous and thorough and we waited about 25 mins which is great for a busy taco Tuesday. The restaurant itself has 5 small tables and some bench counter seating. Very cute ambiance. Chaotic operation from the moment I walked in. I stood there for several minutes before anyone even acknowledged me, and when they finally did, it felt rushed and dismissive. There were no visible menus, and the QR code required access to their Wi-Fi--but the password wasn't posted anywhere. It was unclear where to order, who to talk to, or even how things worked. If you're hungry and looking for efficient, welcoming service, this is not the spot. I came hoping to support a small local business, but there was zero customer service and a lot of confusion. I've been here about 7-8 times now and honestly, it's progressively worse. For the record, I formerly owned a restaurant and also have probably never written a negative review anywhere in my life. The food is mid. Almost every time my order has been wrong in some way, which sucks when you're paying extra for jalepenos. My recent order was a birria bowl. $17 (yes a tip was suggested on top of that). The food is overpriced. My entre consisted of shredded lettuce, white rice- no beans (I had checked rice and beans but I guess today was not my day to have beans?), pico which was 98% diced tomato, and lastly the meat which was tender but underseasoned. No consumé sauce included. For the record, I ordered birria tacos a week or two prior and those didn't include a consumé, just hot sauce instead. I had to ring a bell to get the Gen Z working theres attention. He had headphones in, back turned, 5 ft away. Fine, it's whatever, but the attitudes of the other workers in previous experiences seem like they would rather be anywhere else in the world other than La Fonda. Their business hours posted online conflict with their actual hours. Finally, why the actual f does it take that long to put together orders? This place could be absolutely crushing it and serve as an anchor for surrounding businesses but La Fonda absolutely falls flat on its face. read more

It was 90% rice, 5% cheese, 3% chicken, 1% avocado, possibly 1% sour cream. For $18 with a can of soda, I'd expect more. read more

La Fonda is a new DR taco shop in West Village. Everything I've had had been excellent but I'm still trying to nail down which meat is my favorite (probably need to go back for a taco Tuesday and re evaluate). I like the tacos and burritos, but I think you get the most bang for your buck by getting a bowl. The shop itself is small and cute maybe okay to eat there but I prefer to take my food to go, no one needs to see me go Tasmanian Devil on this food. Service is great and friendly though, they have experienced such tremendous popularity in the past few weeks, expect some time for your order to be ready. Love this taco joint! The food is delicious and extremely consistent--this is a great sign considering this is a new establishment. The counter help is patient and helpful and do notice customers if they have been waiting for a while. And lastly, the price of the tacos is very good and even better on Taco Tuesdays. We ate there last night and everyone loved it including my Texan brother-in-law who has very high standards and my 11-month-old who ate everything we gave her.
