Very Disappointed - Will Not Be Returning I had a really bad experience at this Mexican bakery. I bought a piece of sugar bread, and when I got home, I found a hair mixed into the bread. It was disgusting and completely ruined what we were hoping would be a nice treat. To make things worse, they also gave me the wrong change. My total was $3.75, and I paid with a $20 bill. They only gave me $10 back. I didn't notice at the time because I was talking to my wife and we were excited to try the bread -- which turned out to be a huge disappointment anyway. What's even more frustrating is that this isn't the first time something like this has happened. A couple of years ago I had a similar bad experience and stopped going, thinking maybe things would improve over time. I gave them another chance, but clearly nothing has changed. Very disappointed. I visited La Gloria with tamales in mind. I used to get these pretty regularly years ago, and remembered them as some of the best I've ever had. I'm happy to report that they were every bit as good as I remembered. You can choose chicken or pork filling, and they are sold in groups of 6 or 12. I got the pork, and the meat was delicious and flavorful. It's hard not to pick up a pastry or two when visiting, and I chose a caramel pastry and an apple turnover. Of the two, I absolutely loved the caramel pastry. It was a tender little pocket filled with dulce de leche. Mmm! I wouldn't get the apple turnover again, as I didn't care for the filling. read more

I discovered this place while searching Yelp and I'm so glad we were able to stop in while we were visiting Detroit. The building is very easy to find, right in Mexicantown. When we walked in, we were told to take a tray and tongs and we could walk around to and pick out the items we wanted. A lot of the items were things ive never heard of/seen before, so I just tried a variety of items. We had a tray full of goodies and a bottle of water and everything only came to $11.50. You cannot beat these prices! I will definitely stop back in here the next time in Detroit. We want to try the tamales the next time we're in town! This place was so cute!! read more

Come in and be overwhelmed by sweet Mexican delights! We purchased a glazed lemon turnover, a glazed cherry turnover, a caramel turnover dusted with sugar and lastly a warm churro. My wife had to eat half the churro before we got to the counter. They were all excellent and we enjoyed them for a couple days, still tasting fresh and delicious. But be ready to be tempted with last minute purchases. As we turned to corner to pay there were bundled bags a tamales! The prose is wonderful and are already planning our return! Every trip possible that I am in Detroit near Mexican Town, I stop by for these delicious treats! These cookies are always a hit with the family. My favorite is the pink heart shaped one. La Gloria Bakery never disappoints me. I have been going there for as long as I can remember. Evie's Tamales on the same block would provide these cookies for dessert when we were there and is how we found this lovely family owned establishment! The best part of La Gloria's to me is being able to walk around the bakery, opening the cases and using the tongs to pick out my own cookies and treats, then carrying a tray of delightful smelling favorites up to the counter to be boxed up. It is fun to bring the family in and have them peaking into the windows of the cases to pick out their own sweets. This trip, I also bought their chicken tamales to try. The chicken tamales were really moist and tasty. I highly recommend trying them. I will definitely be getting them again! read more

I've been going to La Gloria for years now. It's a must-stop when you're in or near MexicanTown. Upon entering, your senses are overloaded with the smells and sights. Grab a tray, piece of paper and tongs (no hands!), and get ready for an experience. There are so many baked goods, yummy stuff (including my wife's favorite - choco flan) in the cooler, and don't forget churros if you're there on the weekend. They don't have the other flavors anymore, but cinnamon is great. There is also a selection of great tamales, both hot and chilled. And if your cholesterol is OK, they also have chicharonnes on the weekend that you buy by weight. Those are awesome, just don't get any two days before your next physical! You walk in and grab a tray, and some tongs, and grab baked goods and add them to your tray and then check out at the end of the circular aisle. The baked goods are great Mexican baked good, and are also super inexpensive. A MUST for anyone looking to have some thing sweet. There's always plenty of desert joints in Detroit, but the only one that can really hold a candle to Astoria is this spot right here. I don't care who you are or where you come from. This bakery will and can destroy all bakeries in Metro detroit. Things I regularly get here... top of my list would have to be the Tres Leche. Second would be their churros. Third would be the custard horn or the cannoli. They make seasonal things as well, I seen them slinging king cakes as well. Remember, these guys do some good tamales too. They sell em by the dozen. Service is good and direct. You pick your stuff, bring it to the counter, they wrap it up, bag it then you pay for it. Take it home or to a park and enjoy. Freshly baked Mexican goodies all day every day! I always make it a point to stop at La Gloria every time I'm in Mexicantown. Everything related to Mexican baked goods can be found here...this includes pastries, bread, cookies, churros, flan...they also sell fresh tortilas and corn husks. My favorite item from here are the chocolate-filled churros. The cookies are awesome, they sell tons of sugar cookies with clever sayings on them, like "blah blah blah" or "bite me", or pretty much anything that's clever right now, like music lyrics. Upon walking in to La Gloria, you can grab tongs & a tray, and the entire bakery is self-served, so you can pick out Mexican baked goods to your liking. This used to be the place where my kids and I would go out of our way to get a special treat. It was a 30 minute destination excursion. A few months ago, pre covid we went and my son found mold on his MnM chocolate doughnut. We told the the guys who worked there. They saw them, picked off the MnM's on the doughnut and told us to grab something else. I thought nothing of it. Fast forward 4 months. We went today and the place is a dump. The attached picture is a a pic of my cream filled pastry. My son ran right for the MnM doughnuts and oddly enough, a chocolate doughnut with moldy MnM's picked off over to the side was hanging out on the shelf. Obviously there is no way this can be the same doughnut? We are talking 4 months. We walked in after lunch and found only 1 other family in the bakery at that time. We weren't greeted but could see someone behind the counter. We decided on a churro and chocolate flan. Only the plain churros were available. We attempted to make small talk with the guy behind the counter but he wasn't interested. We asked for spoons for our flan. He said "Sure." It was raining so we went to the car to enjoy our goodies. He only gave us 1 spoon, but OK we will deal with it. I want to start with the churro so that I can end on a positive note. The churro was hard and chewy. It had a taste of old fryer oil. There was very little sugar or cinnamon on it. It was plain awful, nothing else I can say about it. The chocolate flan on the other hand was amazing. The flan was creamy and delicate, and perfectly sweetened. The chocolate cake was moist and full of chocolate goodness. When you put the 2 together it is an amazing combination that I am craving already. It was a 45 minute drive for us and we had hoped for more. I've been there before and had a better experience. This is the WORST bakery in Southwest Detroit. Sheila's bakery on Springwells, and Mexican Town Bakery on Vernor, are MUCH better options for just a short drive. The prices are the same but the quality is so much better. Can we talk about sanitation here? I try almost every year to buy something here, but its always covered in FLIES! Things aren't covered properly. They get stale quicker. Hence, the bread that is always stale! Sure, they've got some "neat" things for the gringos, but cute sugar skulls aren't going to make me eat fly cookies. They use be ok. But now it's just not even OK. read more
