    Cream cheese Babingka, ube brownie

Obsessed with JP makes and bakes after one visit! I went for lunch on a Friday and had the ukoy bowl, which was delicious. The batter used is so light while still being crispy. I also treated myself to a couple items from the bakery - the brownie and babingka were great. I had to grab 6 of the suman malagkit to go as well, because I love a sweet sticky rice roll!!! Topped all of this off with the mango calamansi lemonade - a perfect summer drink.

    Many baked goods!

Really delicious Ube treats! We got the Ube brownie and a dozen cookies ($10)- yum yum, I would totally go back for those! We also tried the savory special which was a Chicken Longanisa over biscuits which was okay, the sweetness in this dish threw us off (a Filipino friend of mine told me Filipinos love to add sweet to everything- lol) so would probably skip that next time. The espresso was really good! They have 2 very small (& low) tables for those who want to eat there, we went on a Saturday so it was busy and yes, go early as we witnessed them selling out of several of their pastries! Great addition to Detroit, we will be tempted to come back to try more goodies!

You know a neighborhood is on rise when the hip filipino bakery opens up! Lots of interesting takes on filipino flavors. Stuff tried Calamansi olive oil cake Ube cookies Chicken Longanisa sio pao Sisig sionpao Everything was pretty tasty. The calamansi and olive oil cake was one of my faves but the owner came out and gave us an assortment of sio pao on the house when he heard my mom wanted us to drive all the way from Clinton twp to try this place out! Definitely made us fans of this place on the spot! The space is pretty tiny so expect to likely take your eats to go!

I was not expecting such deliciousness! When I walked in, I was greeted with a smile. It was my first time here, so all my questions were answered. There are more selections than I expected and everything was fresh baked and delicious. I walked in with a friend and we had a hard time not buying one of everything! We'll definitely be back! I wish they opened at 7:30 a.m. so that I could stop in before work! Parking is tough you may end up circling the block.

I visited JP Makes and Bakes at the recent Little Asian Bites Night Market and thought they deserved a separate review. I originally learned about JP from an article on Eater a couple of weeks ago and was pretty excited to learn that he was going to be at the night market. There aren't very many Filipino establishments in Metro Detroit and I was excited to finally have a bakery option! Everything at the booth looked so delectable, but we managed to pare things down to a couple of items: Cassava Cake ($5) - Coconut shreds are embedded in the cassava cake, which is then covered with a thin layer of caramelized custard/condensed milk. That top layer is sweet and rich. Overall the cake is chewy, kind of like a more spongy and granular mochi chew. (5/5) Ube Brownie ($3) - This brownie is more cakey/fluffy than fudgy. It's quite sweet with a rich, earthy ube flavor that comes through easily. When you open the package, the ube aroma hits you in the face. (4/5) Polvoron Pinipig ($5 for 4) - I've never had this pastry before. I found it to be very interesting and very delicious. The construction seems like toasted rice that's been pounded into powder, mixed with milk powder, flour, butter and salt, and formed into a cake. It reminds me of a Macau-style almond cookie, but with different ingredients. It tastes sweet, a bit salty, and a bit milky. The texture is dense with fine grains of rice/flour/powder, but it's able to crumble apart a bit. The well toasted rice flour embedded throughout adds a bit of crisp crunch. (5/5) I read that JP Makes and Bakes will be opening a retail bakery sometime this summer. I can't wait for it to open so I'm able to try more treats at regular intervals instead of having to wait for popups! Overall rating of the food this visit: 4.67/5

We went there on a Saturday morning and was thankful that the line wasn't too long, as what we were expecting. We got a variety of goodies from here. Such a cute Filipino fusion bakery! My favorites were the ube brownie, pan de everything and the calamansi olive oil cake. I also tried the iced ube matcha latte and the calamansi lemonade, it was good! But I would love if they had just an iced ube matcha on its own. The service was quick and so polite. Was very excited to come and try this place out and it didn't disappoint!

Delicious hip bakery in downtown Detroit featuring Ube desserts. Ube brownie was super moist and not overwhelmingly sweet. Croissant was dense and buttery. I actually liked it, which is rare cause I am a known croissant hater. Service was fast and friendly, and ambiance is hip and trendy. Highly recommend coming out for a different experience!

Had to get some UBE brownies

Great service and prices aren't too bad. You have to be there at least an hour after they opened or half-hour before they open because they get sold out of the most common Filipino pastries. The UBE brownies are to go for!!! The flavor of the UBE is actually there and what I liked most about this is not too sweet, not to mention...moist. They have blueberry bibingka which is another recommendation for you to try. Parking- There is street parking available, but you'll have to get there before they open if you wish to park near. If not, there is a parking lot around the corner that charges for $5 on Saturday AM, sorry I don't know the charges during weekdays. Sevice- Excellent service! The staff is friendly and attentive. Jonathan (JP) usually is around and he greets customers. You'll have to be patient if there is a line, but for the fourth time we there, averaged 15 minutes wait, but this is before the store opens. Cash or Card- They both accept cash or card. Specials- JP does specials but they vary on a day. I highly try what ever they have :-)

Detroit's food scene continues to diversify, and I'm open to all of it. I'm so excited to share with Filipino friends that there is a Filipino bakery in town. I'm always trying to drag as many people as I can to visit Detroit. I loved all the cookies and Ube-Matcha latte.

Went to hang out with some friends and we got amazing desserts, bread, and drinks while we talked. There was a lot of stuff with Uber and it was delicious. The staff was very helpful if you had questions about the desserts or bread. There is not a lot of seating area so it's really pick up and go. There are about eight seats in total two tables so you have to get there early or either. There may be a little bit late. The line went really fast when getting our desserts and treats.

What a sensation! Prices were good, food was even better! Take your friends here and you'll be more popular. I will be coming back soon.

I'd definitely recommend making a reservation if you're going at a busier time. The service was fast and friendly, I had an overall very good experience! The peanut stewed spinach really caught my eye, so I knew I'd go for a dish with that included. I ended up going for the Nybani with half spiced rice and half coconut rice, with added spicy sauce. I thought it was really good! The beef was super rich and tender, both rices were good but i preferred the coconut rice after adding the spicy sauce. The peanut stewed spinach was very yummy, but I'm glad it came on a dish with a wide array of flavors. Would definitely recommend giving this spot a try if you're visiting town or local to Detroit!

I had lunch at Baobab Fare last weekend, and we really enjoyed our meal. Baobab Fare is an East…read moreAfrican restaurant founded by two refugees from Burundi. The restaurant is beautiful, and the menu is fantastic - we wanted everything. Ultimately, we decided to share the vegan sambusas (my mom is vegan, and we really appreciated how vegan friendly the menu is), which were delicious. Then, between the three of us, we tried: Nyumbani (tender beef, slow-simmered in ripened tomato sauce; served with fried plantains, peanut-stewed spinach, and rice); Samaki (crisp flash-fried fish garnished with tangy sauteed onions; served with fresh corn salad, fried plantains, and stewed yellow beans; and Intore (fragrant eggplant stew served with peanut-stewed spinach or savory yellow beans, and rice). We also shared a fizzy passionfruit juice (carbonated house-made passionfruit juice) and Tamu (sweet dessert pudding made from creamy avocados and tangy passion fruit, garnished with chia seeds). Of everything we ate, my only minor complaint is that the beef wasn't very tender. The Samaki (those onions on that perfectly pan-fried fish), the vegan sambusas, the spiced rice pilau, the Tamu, and the fizzy passionfruit juice were all some of my favorite bites of food from our whole long weekend in Detroit. The service could have been a bit more attentive (we waited a little bit to be welcomed and had to get our server's attention to put in some dessert and get our check when the meal was going a little long), but it was a friendly spot in addition to the beautiful space and delicious food. Overall, Baobab Fare was one of our favorite restaurants over our long weekend in Detroit. I know all three of us (vegan and non-vegans) would love to return. If you love East African food - or if you don't know much about it and want to try it - Baobab Fare is a great option for any meal!
