Not sure how I haven't reviewed my favorite downtown bakery yet. My absolute favorite spot to grab a sweet (or savory!) treat. Their croissants are seriously some of the best I've had outside of France and they have such a wide variety of options it's hard to pick what you want! Their breakfast sandwiches on their croissants are soooooo so so good my stomach growled just thinking about them. Service is always super quick and friendly, I've never had to wait longer than 5 minutes. Lots of seating available in a clean space with lots of windows which make it the perfect spot to chill on a day spent in the city or on a lunch break! read more

I went here for breakfast. It was constantly busy the whole time I was there. They have quite a selection, so it was a bit much at first. I ended up getting 4 pasties and a drink. The Dirty Chai was too dirty and not nearly enough chai. The Strawberry was delicious filled with creme and strawberry jam. The fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil and the goat cheese and olive were pretty good. Nothing super special, but glad I tried them. The butter croissant was solid though. Cannelle by Matt Knio is one of those places that always feels alive. It is always bustling, and the pastry display reminds me of the FAO Schwarz scene in Home Alone, with rows of perfectly lit treats that make you want to point at everything. Service is consistently friendly and fast, which makes it an easy lunch stop. The savory croissant with dried basil tomato, basil, and mozzarella is a perfect mid-day snack. The sweetness of the tomato, light airiness (almost like a quiche?) and saltiness of the cheese, and buttery croissant base all play really well together. The boozy tiramisu is another winner. It is lightly sweet, with a nice crunch from the chocolate, soft but not soggy ladyfinger layers, and a layer of cocoa that gives each bite a deep chocolate note. This has easily become one of our favorite spots for lunch. read more

Happened to pass this place today while looking for parking for the tigers game in Detroit. Thought about checking it out and wasn't disappointed at all. They seem to be a cafe sort of a place with variety of coffee selections and pastries to go with it. Also has a bunch of to go breakfast items too. Every single pastry looked inviting. I eventually ended up ordering the lemon raspberry, chocolate raspberry and a bourbon cacao which has alcohol infused. The pastries are on the pricy side for sure but taste great. Staff was very helpful and also patient, they may have tough customers taking forever to decide what they want, fortunately we weren't holding up a line but as soon as we sat down to indulge, within 5 min they had a huge waiting queue circling the tables. I did like the vibe of the place too, very chic. Will definitely come back again when in the area. read more

Coffee was amazing, good vibes and excellent pastry choices although I didn't indulge.

I loved this little spot right on the corner of grand driver ave. I sat right by the window and enjoyed a raspberry and almond pastry while admiring downtown Detroit. The service was alright although they were super busy. The raspberry and almond combo was stellar the crunch of the almond and sweetness of the raspberry were incredibly satisfying! I stopped in on a whim and I'm so glad I did. This is located near Gd River and Woodward. It's an east location with a welcoming atmosphere. The service was top notch from start to finish. If you pay in cash they offer a slight discount. I was able to make my selections without feeling rushed or hurried in anyway. This French Bakery is nothing short of amazing. My friend and I were visiting Detroit for a few days and stumbled upon Cannelle. We had a tough time deciding what to try but landed on the chocolate pistachio croissant and cardamom bun. Both were delicious as well as the coffee and hot chocolate. We decided right away that we had to go back the next day and we did (and brought some friends). The Americano on the second day was wayyyy too hot to enjoy with my pistachio roll. If I lived in Detroit, I'd be here every day. The service was quick and friendly with some cut of piece of bread for sampling on the counter. Space is on the smaller side but they have more seating in a room fit for a board meeting! read more

I honestly wished I could take this entire shop back to Milwaukee with me! The display of baked goods and cakes is stunning--so many options, all beautifully presented. While many were a bit too sweet for my taste, I really appreciated the variety. Out of the 6-7 items I tried, the standout was the Coffee Crisp--unique, flavorful, and something I'd highly recommend. I also enjoyed the blackberry cake tart, which was another highlight. For something less sweet, the feta cheese pastry with a white sesame crust is a great choice--especially if you like savory pastries. The almond croissant, on the other hand, was softer than I expected (almost sticky, wet, and chewy inside), so I wasn't entirely sure about it. read more

My colleague and I popped in at about noon on a Monday, and the place was hopping but the line moved quickly and our wait was less than five minutes. I ordered the caprese on focaccia to eat in, and a cherry almond puff pastry to go. Both were absolutely delicious. And there were about two dozen other items I need to go back and try. read more

Alluring pastry display with lots of variety. I couldn't walk by without stopping in. I wish I had seen this before getting a coffee down the street, but alas, I had to take my pasties to go as I was holding a full cup of coffee from another shop and the sign on the door clearly reads "no outside food/drinks". **sigh** There is plenty of seating inside and the line moved rather quickly. We got pain au chocolat, a cinnamon twist thing, and a chocolate pistachio croissant. All were well made and delicious. Wish I could stop in again. Soo glad we stumbled upon this place. They have a ton to choose from. My husband got the deluxe breakfast croissant, I got the bacon egg and cheese croissant and almond croissant! The breakfast sandwich I had was one of the best I've ever had. I enjoyed the almond croissant, but think I would've liked it warmed. (Which I'm sure they would've done if I asked) we also got fresh OJ, and man it was yummy. The only downside is that it was LOUD in there! We would recommend this to anyone! read more

I have been going to and supporting Cannelle MK since it originally opened in Birmingham around 2003. I remember when the kids were babies and I took them for sandwiches and crepes. It seemed to have closed for a while in Birmingham then had a stand at Eastern Market. Then they seemed to reopen quiet literally everywhere and now have an online following for the very viral fruit lookalike pastries. This location we have not been to twice within about a month. We came during the alley nearby summer opening weekend, and there were tons of people in the area, including a walking tour heading inside the bakery. They seemed pleasant here. I liked the selection. I liked that they had the French orangina shaped like an orange, so classic. There were so many items I would love to try, per usual. We got a couple chocolate pistachio croissants. They were so delicious, perhaps the best croissants I have ever had, so fresh, flakey and flavorful. I would come back to this location. The only negative is the pricing. Things are getting so costly for me. I understand it is not necessarily the fault of the bakery, but it does make it hard to buy too much at one time. read more

Art gallery or Parisian bakery? The pastries and baked goods here are spectacular and, thankfully , very edible works of art. I literally wanted to try every single item behind the glass here. We tried a ham croissant and it was delicious. The croissant was incredibly flaky and buttery, just like a heart attack, I mean, a croissant should be. They also serve coffee and it was just fine. Come for the pastries, not the coffee. But come you must. I cannot imagine coming to or driving through Detroit without stopping here. read more

Some friends had happened upon this spot a few days before us and raved about the pistachio chocolate croissant and boy were they not wrong. This cute bakery is in downtown Detroit and was within walking distance of my hotel. The staff was enthusiastic to greet us as we came in and patient as we took time to make decisions on what to get. The pistachio chocolate croissant is served warm and is absolutely delightful with the laminated dough and delicious not too sweet filling. I'd love to go back the next time I'm in town. read more

The chicken and artichoke sandwich is one of the favorite bites of food I've had in a while, tangy from the cornichon pickles, herbs and artichokes for something to balance out the chicken. The pastries - don't forget to agree when they ask for it you wanted it toasted because I forgot and I think they would've been much better fresh/toasted. But the flavor was delicious! read more

Wow,what a discovery! Amazing selection of fresh baked goods and breakfast/coffee to order under the same roof. Super friendly and helpful staff,cozy interior,though since we were with a pup,we chose to sit outside,surrounded by lush plants. What really caught my eye was that they have cannelles (not many bakeries do), though I must say those were the least favorable item from our order-nothing wrong with the taste,but I like them to be crispy from the outside and they were more on the chewy side. To satisfy our morning hunger,we also ordered sandwiches (one on a croissant,the other on a ciabatta,with similar contents-eggs,veggies etc), wrapping it all up with a desert of cannelles complemented with coffees. I'm a sucker for bakeries and will always go out of my way to support them. This bakery sits right in the heart of the city..not hidden down an alley or tucked into a corner. If you love chocolate paired with a tart fruit, this dessert is a must-try. The chocolate wasn't overpowering, and the raspberry added the perfect amount of brightness. The balance between the two is a beautiful harmony. [5/5] Pistachio Raspberry Tart - I shared this with my mother, and we both appreciated how light it was. While the pistachio flavor was subtle, the raspberry really shined. [3.5/5] There was another dessert--a combination of puff pastry, custard, and meringue. I can't remember the name, but it was delicious and exclusive to the Detroit location. I love it here! I wish it was less busy but they do not disappoint on their pastries. I will say if you loge nutella and can have it large amounts do go here. I had so much nutella in mine it gave me a stomach ache. It was so delicious though. Probably eat it with real food so you dont have the same experience. The chocolate raspberry croissant was perfect - crispy on the outside side, while light and airy on the inside with dark chocolate and raspberry filling. While eating the pistachio eclair it fell apart and was a bit messy due to the filling. But its cake-like consistency was a nice sugary start to my day. We stopped by on Friday for a quick snack around lunchtime. There is a very large selection of both savory and sweet items. We checked out quickly and then sat down to eat the three things we chose - the lavender eclair, the chocolate chai cake, and the raspberry large macaron. Everything was very pretty and looked good This is where it all went downhill. Everything was overly sweet and had more sugar than actual flavor. The lavender eclair had a strange and too sweet heavy custard inside. The raspberry macaron had way too much overly sweet filling. The best part of the chocolate chair cake was the espresso beans on top. I was very disappointed at the quality of the pastries and the lack of flavor and authenticity. read more
