Stopped in at the bakery after going to confession at the Solanus Casey Center. Got a loaf of the cheddar and herb Irish soda bread and a few Hope's Royale cookies. Both were fresh and delicious and were recommended after I struck up a conversation with the kind employees. It was very clean and peaceful and I stuck around to have my coffee that I got while there as well. This is place is a gem in the heart of Detroit and all for a good cause!! I had the good fortune of running into a mobile station selling good from this bakery.  Wow!  Talk about tasty tidbits and healthy, nutritious treats!  Made with quality goods using standard bakery practices these bakers have taken their work and turned it into the art that it has always been meant to be.  I am so glad I found this bakery so that I can pop over and pick up a great sandwich and enjoy it in a clean, carefully maintained and safe environment.  The service at the counter is friendly and professional.  The staff is knowledgeable and fully engaged in their work.  If you are looking for a nice place to have lunch in Detroit, or to pick up lunch for yourself or cater an event then this bakery and delicatessen is for you.  They can turn a humdrum meeting into an energized event just by providing the eats.  It may sound trite and that's just too bad but this bakery and businesses like it are the pillars upon which we are building Detroit.  I'm glad I found it.  I feel like someone who has been dragging himself along the desert floor looking for water and then, all of a sudden, BOFFO!, a corn beef sandwich with mustard and a coffee!  Yeah, baby! A friend turned me on to this Bakery and we thought we would go check it out. Pleasantly surprised on first and foremost how it is presented. So clean and looks absolutely yummy. It is tied in with the Capuchin kitchen and helps many people on a work program. I got the monster chocolate chip cookie and also the monastery white bread which makes excellent toast. So, I had to go to this side of town this morning to pick up a client for court. On my way, I had a few extra minutes to grab something to eat, and realized that there wasn't a whole lot around here. I didn't want to veer off my path for to long, and after driving by this place, I turned around and came in. This bakery is amazing! It's in a very rough, beaten down part of town, and I wasn't expecting a whole lot. the first thing I noticed was the parking lot was clean, and well maintained. Walking in, the inside was immaculate. IMMACULATE. SPOTLESS. I've never seen a place so clean, I swear! I looked around and there were two cute old ladies in line ahead of me picking up a larger order. I stood there and reviewed the menu for a minute before I placed my order with this really nice man behind the counter. He was so friendly and helpful, especially considering how early it was. He helped me out and I went with a small coffee and muffin. Fortunately, they have seating here, and I hung out for a few minutes on my phone. While I was reading up on this place, I read about what they do for the community, and it really sealed the deal. They help men (and I think women as well) who are recently released from prison transition back society by given them jobs here. This, my friends, is what I love. They also have bags of coffee for sale by the pound, and I think you can place orders for an office or something else. I would gladly return here for any given reason, and I think you should too. Sidebar: See, I work with people who are disabled, both mentally and physically. They were able to work at one point, but their illnesses have gotten to the point that they are unable to work and support themselves any longer. Some are felons. Let me tell you, it's not easy being sick AND being on parole, because being on parole makes you unemployable. Forever. No one wants to hire a felon. These kinds of programs HELP people avoid going back to what they were doing in the past by giving them an opportunity. I love that. It allows the men and women to reform, which is what we need. read more

I found out about this bakery when they had a vendor space at Eastern Market last year, I just now got a chance to visit the actual bakery. I've been missing out, this place is AWESOME!!! When I first walked in the door I was greeted immediately, and I noticed they sold way more items than I expected. A wide variety of goodies to choose from, and very cheap too. Also, it's a nice spot to use WiFi and chill, even have small group meetings, plenty of seating. Since I was a first time customer, they hooked me up with extra goodies, so cool! This is an amazing place with a great story. To start lets talk about the atmosphere. Its clean, and contemporary which is nice. because of it's history they could definitely benefit from some art pieces done by local artists. The service was amazing. I was greeted by a man who was excited to help, but thats not where the experience ended. he gave us a run down on the history and reasoning of the place. The bakery is owned by the Capuchin soup kitchen. It is operated by men who have just been released from jail. It is designed to give these men a second chance at life. They train them and even teach them ways to use their money so that they do not have to revert back to their past ways. Its a beautiful story and one you should hear from the men there that are passionate about it... in other words, visit!! I love this place and will visit every chance i get! read more

I have nothing but good things to say about this place: [1] One of very few places in the area where you can get fresh food. [2] Very affordable. I got two muffins, a brownie and a (day-old) loaf of bread for less than $6. The guy even threw in a free cup of coffee. [3] Very, very clean inside. I occasionally go to Detroit for work from Ann Arbor. When I do, I like to try a different local café. On The Rise Bakery was a great find! Best oatmeal walnut raisin cookie I've ever had and high quality black coffee (beans were from Chiapas- my favorite coffee.) There were also other types of breads and a few homemade soups and sandwiches. I will be stopping here again next time I'm in that area. read more

One of my favorites in Detroit. The farmer's rye bread is delicious, especially toasted. I frequently stop in to pick up a pie if I'm going to a friend's house for dinner--they're always a hit. My dad and I really like this place! Anytime we visit it's always clean and the employees are very pleasant! They have a nice variety of pastries to choose from (my favorite is the pineapple upside down cake) and the portions are huge. No kidding, the cookies are larger than my hand! The staff was especially warm, friendly, and funny, and made us feel comfortable for the duration of our stay. Mega-quick service, too. Went to the new location, which is beautiful, and had a hot turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mustard sandwich that was really, really good. Also left with a great loaf of bread (cinnamon raisin) and donuts, both of which were excellent. I'll for sure be stopping in at least once a month. The mission of On the Rise deserves support by itself, but the bakery items and food make it a must. read more

I always drove by this place and finally decided one day that I needed to try it. Let's just say I'm obsessed. The coffee is AMAZING. I'm the person who dumbs a lot of cream and sugar into their coffee, but I almost want to drink their coffee black because of how delicious it is. Their sweets are amazing.
