When is La Grande not so Grande? Been wanting to visit this classic restaurant in historic downtown Stuart since my move to Stuart. Tucked in the old Post Office Arcade building, its partially hidden walkway leading to the restaurant only adds to what lies ahead. As you enter you step into a world that speaks to a time of classic old world elegance. Antiques, elegant draping window coverings and a beautiful fountain at its center, this restaurant brings to mind what a dining experience was like in the nineteenth century. Unfortunately, the service and food sadly do not match the exquisite ambience. SERVICE : The service, or should I say lack of service was evident from our first step in the door. We waited for several minutes before anyone noticed we were standing there waiting. Once noticed, we explained that we had a 7 pm reservation which the hostess of course could not find. She scanned the restaurant (which was empty at the time) and told us she would see if she could find us a table. After several minutes we finally were seated. Another 15 minutes past before someone walked past and asked if we had been taken care of, which of course we had not. He assured us that he would get someone as soon as possible, which added another 10 minutes to our already extended wait. Eventually our "server" showed up. You'll note that I put the word server in quotes because this person was anything but a server. So as not to bore you with specifics, let's just say I have a problem calling someone a "server" who is totally incapable of serving! A person who doesn't understand "medium rare", who misses several ordered sides and charges us for dishes we never received clearly doesn't deserve the term "server". THE FOOD: There were three people in our party. For appetisers, we ordered the Martier Escargot which had a bitter taste because of the burned butter, the Blueberry Brie Crostini, which turned out to be the best dish of the evening was outstanding, and the potato goat cheese puffs were light and delightful. For our entree's, we ordered the Cedar Plank Salmon which was overcooked, dry and tasteless, the New Zealand Lamb Chasseur which was fine except for the missing asparagus (which our server assured us he would get back out and immediately forgot) and finally the 12 oz Prime New York Strip which was cooked well done instead of the medium rare requested. I do need to mention that the garlic risotto was fantastic, creamy and tasty. Unfortunately, we had to enjoy it at home as our server didn't bring it until we were completely done with our meals! As far as desserts go, after our 1 1/2 hour stay, we decided to forego any additional pain and accordingly skipped dessert. Finding our server throughout the night was a challenge of hide and seek and this includes getting our final bill which, as mentioned above, took three trips to get right! The Ambiance: This is an absolutely beautiful restaurant that cries for matching service and a creative efficient kitchen that produces dishes that represent their grand names. THE BOTTOM LINE: As with all my reviews, we come to what I like to call the "customer so what". Would I come back? The answer... as a walk through to see what elegant dining looked like in the 19th century... absolutely! Perhaps you could sit at the bar and enjoy a Manhattan but, to dine? The offerings, as mentioned, were a mixed bag but unless you're into the pain of some of the worst service you'll ever experience, absolutely not! read more

My husband took me here for my birthday and we both loved it. He had the special which was a ribeye with a glaze and I had the small pot pie. He said the ribeye was perfectly seasoned, perfectly prepared, very tender and delicious. I enjoyed my pot pie but will try something different next time. I think I've developed a slight aversion to certain herbs that routinely go into pot pies so that's on me. The presentation for both dishes was classy, We enjoyed a wonderful key lime pie for dessert which I would strongly recommend for key lime pie lovers. Our server, Michael, was kind, knowledgeable about the menu, and gave us prompt service. We both loved the ambiance... very romantic place in a historic building with lots of decorations and flowers. This was one of the best meals I've had. Ever. From the moment you walk in, you feel transported to the historical post office. The service was impeccable (they knew our names from the reservation and used it!). The waitress we had was from Maine and absolutely delightful. She was knowledgeable, sweet and knew her role. The food? I cannot say enough. Every single thing we had was delicious: Apps: fried green tomatoes and the smoky chicken salad - unreal. Main: i got the Chilean Sea Bass special and it was the best Ive ever had. The mashed potatoes - get them. It is perfect. Husband got the short ribs- wowwww. Just wow. Dessert- get the creme brulee with chocolate and espresso. You'll be sad when it is gone. It was such a special dinner - and it was seamless. I really enjoyed this place, beautiful inside and outside entrance reminded me of the movie The Secret Garden. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. We went for dinner with reservations just in case. They have a nice bar and huge sitting area located in what used to be a Post Office Arcade. The building was very antique and had this smell that fit perfectly with the rest. You don't have to come overdressed (fancy). Food was fresh and delicious. I ordered the braised beef ribs based on Yelp reviews as a popular dish there, meat was so tender and full of flavor. I got to sample a few of my other listed dinners that my family ordered and it was good. The Chicken lacked a little flavor for me the noodles were overpowering the lemon sauce and would have requested more cheese to go with it. The appetizers delicious. Oh my goodness, talk about a literal hidden gem! I'm pretty sure this place has been around for a while but it was only on my most recent hometown visit that I managed a visit. The entryway is just lovely and even a little easy to miss if you aren't looking. It feels like it's a semi-tropical French, if I had to name the aesthetic - love it! It seems like they keep pretty busy on a Sunday brunch schedule, but we luckily still got a table as a walk-in. They have a few mocktails on the menu, and they also prepare them with nice presentation, which is always so nice! For food, we split a few appetizers, including a flatbread and the avocado bruschetta. That one was my favorite by far! I can't wait for my next holiday hometown visit so I can come again! read more

Friends and I came La Grande Martier for brunch to celebrate some of their birthdays for the second year in a row. I've been here a few times now, but we had the absolute best waiter, Keith, who made this experience one of my favorites here! The place is cute and eclectic, at the end of a little alleyway in downtown Stuart, it doubles as a bar at night and restaurant during the day. To drink, I had the unlimited mimosas for $20. Out with the girls and having a ride to and from, I took full advantage of the opportunity to try all of the flavors: orange, strawberry, guava, pineapple, mango, blackberry, and peach! I didn't end up trying them all, but with the best waiter (Keith) who suggested some neat flavor ideas, I did get to try i(n order of favorite): blackberry, guava, guava peach, mango, peach mango, and strawberry pineapple. They were all yummy and they are all served in wine glasses (they are very generous sizes) so if you drink more than 2 it's definitely worth it. All other drinks were less than $10 so they must have some sort of happy hour brunch specials. For food, the sampler platter had a crab cake (very good and one of their signature dishes), croque monsieur (ham & cheese in a puff pastry), steak taco (a tad sweet), croquettes, and tomato bisque (thick and flavorful). All were pretty good, but are also ordered by most favorite to least. Several friends had the crab cake Benedict and loved it. That, along with the shrimp & grits are said to be the best brunch entrees, but I'm indecisive so the sampler platter is a great solution to that! All in all, it's a great place for brunch, especially if you plan to treat yourself to any brunch drinks. read more

The place is what I would consider semi formal and very nice. The staff were also friendly and personable. The food was excellent. I had a chicken sandwich and the bread was nicely seasoned and toasted and the chicken was moist and fresh. The fries were fresh, crisp, properly salted and delicious. My two guests had the chicken wrap. While they also said it was delicious, the one was Muslim and ordered it without bacon and it came with bacon. They did apologize, quickly resolve the issue, and comp his meal. They both got the side of fruit and the fruit was fresh and the portion was generous. Lovely anniversary dinner with good service and beautiful live piano music. Fabulous goat cheese croquettes. They were out of the snapper on a Wednesday; maybe because the focus on Wednesdays is on prime rib? The shrimp and grits was overly flavorful, but tasty. The lamb was fine with excellent mushrooms, asparagus, and more croquettes. Creme brulee was good. Portions were generous. Disappointed to be seated right next to the kitchen door even though the restaurant was empty. Restaurant generously took off our wine bottle and dessert for the special occasion. Whenever I want to impress a crowd for a special occasion I know I can rely on La Grande Martier to take it to the next level. This was the 3rd business holiday dining event I have coordinated at this location and they never disappoint. The decor in the hearth room is cozy, classy and unlike any other setting in the area and it really shines during the holidays. We had a great local pianist playing in the background. The management and the chef were communicative and accommodating every step of the way. The wait staff were excellent. I stumbled upon this gem by doing a Yelp search for places to eat in downtown Stuart, and the photos drew me in. My mom and I had a late lunch here on Saturday. My mom (a local) had no idea about this restaurant and thought it was such a treat to try somewhere new. The walkway to the restaurant is charming. We had the kindest hostess who even provided us with a 10% off coupon for our first visit. We walked around the restaurant and saw it had 2 bars, someone playing amazing song covers on the piano, and fancy eclectic decor. Our server Keith was such a joy. He really helped us when ordering and service was delightful. I ordered the Martier Sampler and for only $22 the portions were large. The crab cake is a must order! You can also find it under the apps. My mom ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup and she raved about how fresh the bread was. We finished it off with the pecan crusted key lime pie and oh my is was to die for. It was a REAL key lime pie. We left so happy to discover this get restaurant and with bellies full! 9 of us had brunch for my birthday today at 11am. Cute restaurant. The manager on duty was a little frazzled and blamed most things on the closing staff. We sat down and immediately noticed chips in 1/2 of the glass plates, one of which as was pretty sharp. 1/2 our glasses had water marks and/or lipstick on them. All of which was rectified immediately. I shared the crab cake Benedict with my niece. It was delicious. We also had fresh fruit. The sinful martini was delish. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. 2 guests had the chicken and waffles. Another had French toast. Our waitress could have been a little more attentive to drinks but otherwise she was fine. My first impression was that it was cozy but then looking more closely, the decor was cheap looking and tacky. The floors looked dirty and i really didn't want to dwell on that because my mind was going to the kitchen and i wondered how dirty it could be; i stayed because my friend invited me there; however, our waitress was excellent and food was tasty but the waiter who first greeted me who had white hair and blue eyes and was nice looking, immediately decided to make fun of my 5'1" height which wasn't very kind; body shaming is rude, distasteful and not very intelligent. Also I read that the health department didn't really give them good marks on first inspection. I hope they improve. read more

4 of us had a pre-concert dinner at La Grande Martier in Stuart on March 14. I ordered the Wedge Salad and the waitress said the Coconut Rum Mahi was her favorite so I ordered it as my entree. My wife ordered the French Onion Soup and the Creole Shrimp & Gouda Grits as her entree. My wife's soup was delivered by a runner but not my Wedge Salad. I told my wife to start eating her soup while it was still hot. My waitress was nowhere to be found. After 10 minutes or so, I was finally able to flag down the waitress to complain that I hadn't received my salad. She ran into the kitchen and it finally arrived after another 10-minute delay. But I had barely started eating my salad when all of our entrees arrived. My Mahi came with an inedible cloyingly sweet coconut sauce that didn't make sense to serve with the Mahi. It tasted like it belonged in a Pina Colada. The Grits that accompanied my wife's shrimp had no cheese flavor. The restaurant added a 3.2% Merchant Fee for using our credit cards but I did add a 19% tip even with the poor service and lousy food. To add insult to injury, when I got my credit card statement, the restaurant charged me $5 more than the total I included on my charge receipts. Buyer Beware!!! read more

First of all the service was the best. Michael was not o my cute and witty, but he was very accommodating and refreshing. He knew how to give exceptional service without hovering. His recommendations for food were spot on. The food was not only delicious but beautifully presented. We had our dog with us and she felt like she was welcomed.
