A great eatery for the locals and us tourists passing through. Good food, reasonable prices, and Chilaquiles, which was the star item. They did say they came with eggs on top which was missing but the red sauce and shredded chicken was savory and delicious. The chili relleno was on point and the Flautas were a good portion and tasty. Most importantly for a traditional Mexican spot, the chips and salsa were very good. Great lunch stop! We ordered off the menu (next time I would try their lunch specials-the tacos & fajitas looked & smelled amazing!). Loved their salsa! Service was good, people were nice and hard working, food was good, but nothing to brag about. Inside (especially bathroom) needs some improvements. They only have a beer & wine license so no tequila with any strength will be in your margaritas (they use a low "wine-like" tequila as a substitute for the real thing). Unfortunately, this was just a one & done for us. We like Mariachiles Mexican Grill (that has real tequila in their margaritas) better as a comparison, but if you're willing to spend a little more money than Salsas Cocina is the best Mexican restaurant offered in Palatka. read more

We ate here last evening with a group of 8. The food was delicious, and everyone truly enjoyed their entrees. I had chicken and cheese filled poblano peppers, which were outstanding. Food is overpriced and just ok. There was an Al Pastor fajita lunch special. My husband and I were going to share it, but the wait staff insisted that we needed to get it for 2. We only ate about a 1/3 of it and took to rest home. It tasted good but did not have the Al Pastor taste that my husband expected. He also ordered an ice tea. The meal did come with complimentary chips and salsa. He really liked the salsa and the chips. We were blown away when our bill came to $32 before taxes and tip. From the outside this place doesn't look like much but it is by far the best Mexican food i have found in this part of Florida. Coming from California I am very biased about my mexican food but this place covers all the bases. I do hate that here in the south everything is coveted in queso so I usually just ask them to leave it off of anything I order and they are always accomadating. This place gets bad reviews and I don't know why. Tastes pretty authentic to me. The people that work there are always nice and we are always seated right away. I really love their cheese and onion enchiladas. I've also tried the pork tamale (seemed a little dry) and the vegetarian burritos which was also good. I also love their salsa since it has a kick to it. Only complaint would be they don't have margaritas and you need to be very clear about vegetarian fillings or they will put meat in. I'm from Jacksonville and had to do some work in Palatka. I was craving Mexican food so I tried this place out. I should of walked out after seeing construction paper covering the holes in the ceiling. Instead I ordered the chimichanga. What a disappointment, it was the saddest looking chimichanga on the planet. They literally took a burrito from a wrapper and fried it. It came with a palmful of rice with orange food coloring and a tiny dollop of sour cream and guac. Here's the kicker it cost $10 for this abomination of Mexican food. Evidently La Hacienda I is located in Tallahassee which is where these restaurants got their start. They certainly have a good thing going. I'm very picky about my Mexican food but this place was very very good. The salsa is spicier tha your normal restraint but that's what made it excellent. I even enjoyed the refried beans which I normally do not. It cost about what you expect to pay these days so no surprise there. The only downside that I could see is they do charge for additional chips and salsa which is something a lot of places do these days. Doesn't mean I have to like it. And you only get one free refil on your soda, after that you pay for another. I don't ever drink that much but my boyfriend usually goes those three or four drinks.
