We were told to come here from someone at a winery and although it was okay, it wasn't great. The cheese dip really lacked flavor and we threw in salsa and jalapeños into it to enjoy it better. The Mexican pizza wasn't bad but not something I'd go out of my way to go back to have. The lady was nice, it seemed like she was the only one working. Really good Mexican food is hard to find in the North West, but this place was fantastic! The food was hot and fresh and tasted authentic. The tortillas are made fresh and by hand. Their salsas aren't spicy and the horchata isn't very good but the food is great! The service was good, everyone was friendly and attentive. I came in here with my husband and his parents last night. They recommended it because it was close to their house and usually has pretty quick service. We were all starving. Customer service was good. Although a bit slow. My mother in-law commented that they aren't usually that slow. But the employees were really nice and helpful. We all ordered our food. Which we quickly learned that as long as you don't make any substitutions, you will be ok. My mother in-law ordered her food without guacamole, as she's allergic to avocados and it makes her sick. Hers came with guacamole. I ordered a combination platter with a cheese enchilada, a shredded beef taco, and no beans. The only thing correct on that plate was the cheese enchilada. My husband and father in-law's food was fine, but they didn't make any substitutions. The food was good, but I hate when half of it arrives and we have to send it back immediately with a list of everything they screwed up on it. Props to the waitress who handled it well, but yeah. I hate being that person. The restaurant itself is tiny and cramped. We were squished into our table like sardines. Decor and music is over the top bright. Would I return? Not on my own. This is a great restaurant for old white people. I ordered an enchiladas and Tomales lunch special. There was just some cheese on it. Usually you would expect a salsa either red or green over it to brighten the plate up flavor wise. Nope, which made it bland and reminded me of cafeteria food. I wish I could have had salsa on it, I think it's the expectation with both enchiladas and tomales. Shredded been was overcooked and again without salsa or and extra flavor. Don not come to this restaurant. My wife and I came here tonight after a year away from this restaurant. The reason we did not come for so long was because they consistently got our orders wrong, e.g., giving us chicken enchiladas and not cheese enchiladas as we had ordered. Tonight, my wife ordered a combination dinner with double beans, but they still brought beans and rice. They still will not take care to ensure that your order is correct. If you want good Mexican food in Salem, go to Garibaldi's on Lancaster in East Salem or La Hacienda Real in Keizer, but do not come here to La Hacienda Real in West Salem. They do not care enough about their customers to make sure that they receive the food that they ordered. Never again! read more

EXTRAORDINARILY MEDIOCRE The décor was playfully kitsch, and my partner and I were optimistic. Especially on seeing the good variety of authentic looking Mexican dishes on the menu. However, right off the bat the salsa served with the complimentary chips was... very ketchup-y. My partner ordered the chimichanga with shrimp and chiles rellenos, while I had the verde burrito with pork. Everything tasted remarkably bland, as though it came straight out of a can or premade. My partner and I were quite hungry, but only about half way through we were discussing between ourselves how much better everything there would have been if we'd made it at home. We might've even gotten some dessert if the food was at least fair. However, by the end of it all, we decided we didn't want to spend money on another overpriced dish that was disappointing. We enjoy this restaurant! The staff are attentive and depending on what you order the dishes are very flavorful. (Some dishes are designed to appeal to a less robust pallette) The kids usually get a bean burrito without sauce and my spouse and I will pick different dishes so we can share. A nice chili verse was had by all! The grande fabulouso is the homemade tortillas with hot butter dripping in old world deliciousness. The lumpy broken down booths do need replacing as I am not a fan of sitting on rocks and perhaps they could make them a bit wider for better leg room. They make the absolute best homemade flour tortillas, that are made fresh as you order, right on site! You can actually watch them as they make them in a little room off of the front lobby. They were super busy but the lady helping us was so sweet and answered all our questions about dietary restrictions etc. They have the option to get all black beans if you can't have refried beans and always let me sub extra beans for rice since the rice has chicken broth. We recently came to this location. We live out south and the food out south's very good. The food was very bland with little to no flavor. One person in our party ordered shrimp fajitas. When they brought them the sizzle platter was apparently too hot. Everyone in the little room we were in began to cough. They finally came back and took it away and opened a door. The next room began to cough.. the server brought back the fajitas and they were burnt and the shrimp was so over cooked that it was like rubber. No one ever came into our room and apologized to us or the other 5 parties that were in this room. Every one of us agreed that the rice and beans had no flavor. I gave them a couple more trys but I am so done with la hacienda. First of all my food comes out five minutes after i order it and its luke warm. Second their might be a lot of people working at one time but its mostly busy work and then they act annoyed when we do need something. I am wondering if the tortillas are the only thing they make in house because the steak is tough, guacamole you can totally tell it came from a package and burrito sauces have no flavor. Ok not s foodie, I'm a service snob. I will give 5 stars to a Taco Bell if they give me the service this over expecting person is looking for. But this place's food is not as good as Taco Bell. I was craving Mexican food and did a sort based upon ratings and place came out on top with 5 stars. The name was not familiar so I was hoping for some good, authentic mexican food. Turns out that this place is a chain. Complete with laminated, froo-froo, faux-tropical cocktails (prices not listed, bright, fluorescent, gynecological-exam-style lighting and large portions of bland, greasy, over cheesed food. I would give 1 and half but I am rounding down to offset the obviously-overinflated existing 5 star ratings. I would classify this as MEH-xican food because it was really, well--meh. The only thing authentically Mexican about the place was employees. I bet they don't eat there. I had the arroz con pollo. Not the worst I have ever had. Maybe just barely better than that. My wife had the tortilla soup. The dominant flavor was black pepper with no other interesting seasonings. She left most of it. We ordered chicken fajitas to share. The waitress brought the beans & rice about three minutes before the fajitas, allowing the beans and rice to cool. When they arrived there was very little on them. There was also very little refried beans and way more rice. They raised the price and cut the amount they serve you. We didn't eat all of it and brought home with us. When we ate the leftovers there was a small hair in it as well as a bone in the chicken. When we paid we told the person and she said all of the food is pre-measured--that may be true but they cut the amount you get. Liars! I first came here on Sunday after a day of yard work, wanting a margarita and something cheesy and warm and daring to hope for a little flavor. The meal was, overall, fine. Just what I expected. The service was good. The large margarita was cold and strong. Fast forward to tonight. I come in again, thinking of having another large margarita and something to eat. My waiter distinguished himself almost immediately as being lackluster and somewhat annoyed he had to wait on me. Was it because I was alone on a Friday night? Was it his mother? Who can say. I figured he'd be diffident, I'd have a decent meal, I'd leave a good tip and we'd all continue on with our lives. When I tried to order a large margarita, he informed me that they didn't sell that size anymore, that the menu was "wrong," that they only now had a small and a huge fishbowl. Nothing in between. Nope. It sounded hinky, but who knows, so I ordered the larger size. It was, in fact, a fishbowl, and at nearly $14 more than I had been planning on spending on a margarita. Later, when my food came, he set the plate down with a clatter and then looked at me and said, "we're good here, right?" as he was already walking away. His service was truly awful. I've had jobs I've hated, I've worked with coworkers who have hated their jobs, who have suffered traumas that very day, and could still manage to treat customers decently. His attitude continued and I started getting suspicious, so waiting for my credit card to come back, I asked a passing server why they discontinued the large size of the margarita. She looked at me blankly, and then said, "we have the small, the medium, the large, and the jumbo," and then helpful showed me on the table tent where it listed all of the sizes. I asked another waitress, same answer. So when he came back, I confronted him. Suddenly it was "oh no, you must have misunderstood me." No. No no no. I was clear and you were clear. I waited to speak to a manager, and he seemed flustered, not surprising during his Friday night rush, and ultimately, unhelpful. I told him repeatedly I would happily pay for the drink I had drank, but that I was lied to by a staff member and that it was upsetting. Cue shoulder shrug. I had one good experience here and then one very bad one. Make of it what you will, but trust nothing any male servers tell you because at least one of them is a lying SOS. read more

La Hacienda is a true Salem icon. It's been around since I was a kid, and probably before. So when I went home to visit I just had to have me some. Things to love? Super super quick service, you order and your food is suddenly there. But it still feels quality, not like it's been sitting there for a while just waiting for someone to order it. They bring chips and salsa, bean dip, and cabbage to munch on. And they keep bringing it, so that you are almost full when your food arrives, which in my mind is a good thing because you just end up with yummy leftovers for later! I love La Hacienda!! read more
