I've been buying dessert for years from Kate. Pros: The macarons and cheesecake are the best I have ever had! The space is beautiful and a nice place to meet with friends. The staff is always friendly. Cons: The prices are high, but you get what you pay for, so it's good as a treat every now and then. I really, desperately, want there to be a good French bakery in Redding. La Joie isn't it, though maybe in the future, they'll find their feet. The baked goods are overpriced. A croissant here is $6, but is almost inedible because it's too salty. It's almost as if they used salted butter. I will say, however, that the lamination was well done, and they looked good. Texture was good, with a nice balance of crispness in the outer layer and chew on the inside. But the salt! For $8, I can get a dozen Costco croissants that are far better and deliver a better value. A croissant is such a basic item for a French bakery that I don't know how you succeed without one that just nails it. We also ordered a bûche de Noël aka a "Yule Log." It should have been a sign that the person taking an order did not know the French word for a product. The cake was very dry and cloyingly sweet. The dryness ruined it. It was like eating MDF. The whole thing was also far too sugary. It's hard to tell what the cause was. Oven too hot? Wrong pan? Wrong flour? Didn't measure by weight and used too much flour? Too much flour? Who knows! But the flavors flavors should still have been balanced instead of overwhelming you with a single overpowering note. If professionals should be tasting what they're making to ensure quality and consistency and it's hard to believe that anyone here is doing that. I really want this bakery to succeed, but I'm worried the do t have the right staffing. I'll try to check in the future--hopefully they'll pull it together. EDIT: The owner replied--that's great! I worked for ten years in commercial kitchens. I really enjoy food and am pretty knowledgeable. I rarely dine out because I'm a better cook than most restaurants in the area. I will also travel for food. You kind of have to if you're in Redding. The salt level in the croissants here was NOT a matter of taste. There was enough salt in them to cure a prosciutto. No one in the house found them edible. What makes Costco croissants better is that they are edible. they can't compete on quality with someone who knows what they're doing. I would 100% pay $6 for a locally made high quality bread or pastry. Business owners should be able to have a good lifestyle and pay living wages. They can't do that if locals don't pay what quality costs. I'll be back in a few weeks to try again. I will absolutely update my rating too. read more

Today was our first visit. We went by after breakfast hoping for a little something sweet. We were greeted and helped by a friendly person behind the counter. There were samples of the chocolate cookie with sea salt and we shared a piece. It was delicious so we grabbed one to share later. We definitely wouldn't have tried it otherwise so I'd say the sample idea is a win. We also got the sugar covered donuts filled with fruit and cream. One of each flavor. They were ok but absolutely not worth the cost which is $7 each. I would be ok with paying that if it was heaven in a donut but neither of us felt that way. The employees were friendly and helpful, the place is very cute and people seemed to be enjoying themselves on a Sunday morning. We plan to go back at some point and try other items. read more

I've been looking for fresh cheese cake in the Redding area and found La Joie Bakery, and I'm so happy I did. My husband has been craving "real" cheese cake and he said this was the best he's ever had. I bought three pieces, triple chocolate, a peppermint stick? and a vanilla bean with fresh fruit. He had a bite of the chocolate, he loved it, I tried the mousse part (delicious) he ate part of the vanilla bean/fruit and said it was very good. We cut them in half and put them in the freezer for later. They're bigger size slices, and the box of three had a pretty good weight to it. Not sure of how they bake their goods or if they make gluten free items where they can't be cross contaminated or not but, I went early in the morning and had a gluten free vanilla cupcake since I can't have gluten due to celiacs disease and I'm not sure if I was accidentally given the wrong cupcake or if maybe there was some sort of cross contamination of some sort. But ended up having the worst heartburn and stomach issues after eating the cupcake. Maybe their stuff is for people who are gluten sensitive and not celiacs? read more

I waited behind about 30 people in line at their grand opening. The employees worked fast and were so kind even though they were packed. They had so many delicious pastries and they kept bringing out more from the back. Everything I bought was SO DELICIOUS!! The storefront was beautiful and will be such a great place to enjoy coffee and pastries once the line goes down a little bit. The prices were way less expensive than I thought they would be. Agreed, croissants were too salty. Danish didn't seem like the pastry was made from scratch. The texture and flavor just wasn't right. Cinnamon rolls however were bomb. We have been twice, and while the prices are a bit high, the quality is very good. It's definitely not a place I would go every day, it is nice for a treat every so often. Now for the bad. The young lady who helped us was very nice, but it took awhile to even be acknowledged. The real issue was with the employee who rang up our order. No greeting at all, not even a friendly smile. They were not that busy either. She rang up our order and coldly gave us the total. After we paid , my wife gave an over the top thank you, with a sprinkle of sarcasm. I think that finally clued her in that we were annoyed, and she tried to save it. Too late, unfortunately. I don't think this will stop us from going back, but it may be brought to her or her bosses attention next time. I giving a 2 star only because the cinnamon rolls are absolutely delicious. I've been to this bakery twice since they opened but unfortunately won't be coming anymore (overpriced) . On my first visit it was absolute chaos when ordering. Everyone standing in line had no idea what was offered and the prices. I didn't ask the pricing either when I ordered but I assumed it would be average. That was a huge mistake on my part. For ONE slice of cake it was $12. The cake was very dry and I assume it was in the case for a while because $12 for a slice is outrageous and most people won't buy it. The employee or possibly the owner that waited on me was extremely unfriendly and judgmental with her facial expressions. She seemed miserable to be there. I gave this restaurant another try about a month later in the evening. The young girls working were super nice to myself and family. What a wonderful surprise! Went to try it out with a mindset not to be disappointed, no need for that because it was absolutely fantastic. Charming atmosphere, friendly staff, and quick service. Most importantly, the selections were awesome. The spinach quiche was better than that served at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs (5 star hotel). The pastry was flaky and baked to perfection. The coffee, well let's just say it was one of the best cups of coffee we've had in Redding. La Joie will be the place we choose to go for a great experience from now on.
