I notice most of the comments are either earlier this year or in 2012. I can tell you there have been many positive changes to this facility. With a new Administrator, Director of Nursing and Rehab director there a different direction this facility seems to be going. New menu, new offerings, more customer service and prompt attention to name a few. Those "uncaring or uninterested" staff are being weeded out. They are trying to make the patients have a more comfortable experience. Nothing is like home but this facility is trying their darnest to come as close as they can. Think THREE times, not twice before placing your loved one in this facility. My loved one passed away while under their care.... more like LACK of their care. The passing was inevitable, however it didn't have to happen the way it did. They are extremely SLOW in responding to the call button (30 to 40 minutes on average). I understand that meal time and the hour following meal time can be very busy... but I am talking about "off" hours like 10am and 3pm. They are trying to make a profit and they are understaffed. Early morning hours were the worst for getting a call answered (2:00am - 5:00am). My loved one would call me on the cell phone asking me for help and actually tried to call 911 because no one would answer the call button. The roommate actually got out of bed on several occasions to find someone to help. My loved one needed a breathing treatment which turned out to be the demise. I have sat in front of the nurses station and have overheard the staff commenting on patients, they would roll their eyes and say.... "there she goes again" referring to a patient who keeps pressing the call button. One staff member actually had the nerve to grab a pillow and a blanket and took a nap in the chair beside my love one's bed. My loved one told me about the incident and it was confirmed by the roommate. Do yourself a favor and visit this rehab at 2:30am or 3:00am. The place has a whole different vibe at night. It's almost like the staff is on vacation and can't be bothered with patients. Some of the rooms are extremely cold, do yourself a favor and purchase an electric blanket for your loved one (or a fan in the summer). I wish I had visited this site prior to selecting La Jolla Nursing and Rehab. There are a handful of very caring and patient staff members.... however, their are about 3 staff members that have no business working in the healthcare profession. Rehab is not the same as a hospital or even home healthcare... but there are better places than LJNR. Do yourself a favor and shop around. read more

Linda, RN, thank you for making me feel cared for and helping me find comfort while in great pain. I looked forward to you returning to work. You are a gem, a professional and responsible, capable, RN. Otherwise, I felt mis-treated, further injured, and just wanted out. I was given someone else's medication, one that made my vision go blurry and couldn't stay awake. I was given something for hypertension which I do not have. The bed was totally incorrect for someone with vertebral fractures. How this place was listed by Medicare as 5 star, I do not know. I had never been a patient at a nursing/rehab facility before and may well die first before going to one again. Staff, CNA's, Orderlies, when a patient has multiple vertebral fractures, you cannot race down the hall with them, nor expect them to even be able to reach for a blanket and twist the spine. Certainly should not be required to step up onto a 5 inch box to get into a pontoon-shape bed which causes the spine to twist and stretch exactly in the wrong way if the goal is healing vs injuring. I could tell many more complaints of my own and my neighbor's experience, but will stop, soon. Look into other places. Some place where eggs and toast aren't cold. Somewhere where you get the medication ordered on time and as directed. Somewhere where the night CNA's or helpers are sensitive and caring and not sitting in the hallway at night putting patients down for needing help. There has to be a better place than this one. Superb, professional, compasionate staff. Extremely well run facility. A recent unforeseen emergency situation that presented itself a few days ago, and which could have led to serious (potentially fatal) consequences, was avoided by the well trained staff that literally ran to my assistance, thus preventing my fall to the ground as I lost consciousness and colapsed. Were it not for the staff that acted in the best written text book case manner, involving not only immediate in-house first aid, but also the timely call to the paramedics for my transfer to the emergency room at Scripps Memorial Hospital (another first class institution), I would probably not be here recuperating from a crisis that could have had a VERY bad ending. I write this as my expression of gratitude, apprectiation, and recognition to all the staff and management of the La Jolla Nursing and Rehab Center. DO NOT GO HERE. My grandpa was sent here after having his second stroke, he is 84. He's been there for about 2 weeks now, and my aunt just got his info sheet because you have to be on a list or something to see them, but she finally got them.; My grandpa has NEVER taken any sort of drug in his entire life, we were worried about him because he was slurring his words, and was telling us he was hallucinating and felt like he was going to die. We thought it was from the stroke. He couldn't sleep at night and called my dad every night slurring his words and mumbling nonsense; My aunt read the info sheet and found out that he was on several drugs! such as morphine, and others. Why would they give him something for physical pain which he was not suffering from? He was a zombie on these drugs. That's why they gave them to him so he would be less of a "burden" to care for. They keep their patients as long as they can to collect insurance money and drug them up on pointless narcotics. Imagine someone who is 84, and has never taken any type of drug, to be doped up for the first time thinking you were going to die. This cannot be safe for a person in such a condition and age. My whole family is disturbed and hurt by this. Please do not go here. read more

My father was in this facility due to a leg amputation for rehab. The staff allowed my father to fall 4 times from carelessness on their behalf. The staff did not follow directions from my father's doctors, and gave him medication that the doctor discontinued. My father suffered injures to his other foot, and died due to an infection in his other foot that was supposed to treated from wound care team after his several falls in the facility. Please don't send your loved one to this place. My father should not have died due to this. I have reported this place, due to this. The nurses don't call you back, and doctor is not thorough. Now I'm spending the holidays without my father and I'm devastated. read more

La Jolla Nursing and rehab has a great therapy team. They really do a good job of getting you back home. The nurses are excellent. The nurses were kinds and always trying to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The food is really good especially if you eat in the dining room. The omelet bar on Fridays is great. My mother has been in La Jolla Nursing and Rehab, a Covenant Care facility, for the last few years. About a year ago, under La Jolla Nursing and Rehab 'care', she almost died, and was put under hospice care - at the nursing home - by outside hospice nurses. The hospice nurses took great care of her, and trained the La Jolla nurses how to take care of her. She fully recovered and was taken off hospice care. I live far away in a different city and keep in touch with my mother on the phone. Until a month ago, La Jolla Nursing and Rehab had cordless phones that the nurses would bring to residents when an outside call came in. A month ago, without warning, the La Jolla Nursing and Rehab administrator removed the cordless phones. So, suddenly without warning, I could no longer speak with my mother. The nursing home said I could call AT&T to set up a land line next to my mother's bed. I called AT&T and was told the nursing home had to do some set up on their end first. I left messages with the nursing home about it. It took a week or two to get a return call from the nursing home, in which they said AT&T was wrong and I should call AT&T back. I called AT&T back and AT&T said they no longer service La Jolla Nursing and Rehab, and that another phone company must be servicing La Jolla Nursing and Rehab. Over the past week I left two messages with the administrator about this, as well as two messages with the social services representative, asking who is their new phone company, but have not yet received a return call. read more

My mother was recently in and out there over the last two months due to a heart problem. The staff were quite good, my mom liked the meals, and it always smelled cleaned. Some of the long term residents were very caring and knew my mother's name, always asking her how she was. There were two problems my mom had - neither life shattering. The first was her roommate's TV and my mom's were at the same remote frequency - I suspect they all are in each room. This mean when ever the other woman changed channels - which was very frequently - my mom's TV would change as well. There was a similar problem with the phone. Both phones in the room had the same number, the other woman would answer right away and if the call wasn't for her, hang up. We would have to get a member of staff to go into the room to make sure my mom was able to answer. Back in the early 1970s I worked at several rest homes in San Diego. La Jolla Nursing is a zillion times better what I saw. read more

Don't send your loved ones there! The CNA's aren't even provided with a full set of equipment, the nurses bring their own blood pressure cuffs and Oxygen Saturation meters because the facility doesn't want to buy the portable basket that keeps everything in place so they don't get lost. There's no such thing as a "diabetic diet" or "cardiac diet" in that place, aren't patients supposed to be encouraged to follow those diets for health reasons? And more than half the time, nobody is there to change dressings for wounds! You would think that a rehab facility for mainly post-surgical patients would have several full time nurses doing just that! The medication nurses are up to their eyeballs in meds, it's humanly impossible for them to do wound care on top of it! This place is a joke. I have no idea How they keep passing state survey because administration is obviously providing negligent care by not hiring enough nursing staff. Sometimes the CNA's have 16 patients each! It's ridiculous and not at all safe!! And this place wonders why it changes staff more often than they change their underwear... read more

I wasn't too sure about this place but my mom decided to bring my grandma here after a stroke. She can't talk or walk and after a month the doctor from there (which we only saw once) decided that se was "ok" to come home. First of all the nurses don't care for no one! If you press the red button for their help..at least 15 minutes would go by until someone came in the room. We would have to tell them to change her diaper everytime. Atleast 3 times that I know of her feeding tube came of and I was the one telling them about it. They would only shower her twice a week. I wasn't the only one walking looking for a nurse ypu could see in the hall ways someone asking for the medicine for who ever they were visiting. My grandma was sharing a room with an older lady that was muslim and didn't speak english and a few times the nurses will say that she was "so annoying" what kind of nurse is that to be talking like that about their patients? And let me tell you about the social worker!! Mayra! Super rude..she came in to the room and started telling us to be realistic that nothing was going to be the same again to start thinking what we were going to do. She was just so negative. All this was said infront of my grandma..why wouldn't she talk about this outside the room or in her office? I wouldn't take any of my love ones there again! read more

My friend is currently at the La Jolla Nursing and Rehab Center and so far I am NOT impressed. She is recovering from a stem cell transplant and is a high risk for infection. I do not really think that staff have much experience in this particular problem, as I have noticed that her bed sheets are not changed daily, staff are in her room wearing no face masks nor rubber gloves, and all in all she has not been well cared for. No one, with the exception of a few seem to really take an interest in her and her recovery. She needs to have bottled water and the facility does not even have bottled water. We have been bringing her water to drink..She needs a great deal of stiulation and so far I feel she is left alone and sleeps most of the day The OT and PT staff seem concerned and i hope this will pull her through a difficult recovery. .I hope this review is helpful to others and that the care will improve.... read more

Have you seen "one flew over the cuckoo's nest" Please make sure to see this movie before you take your love one's to this terrible place. When the patients/residents, as they all them, ring the /buzzer bell they have to wait for one , maybe two hours before anyone pays attention. Oh let me tell you that with some patients/residents, getting attention or help takes a lot of crying, screaming, and begging before anyone comes to turn off the buzzer light. Shower anyone? Well just get yourself wet, and be forced with 3 people 2 female and a male to hold your hands tight, force you to wear your dirty shirt, a lose brief (adult dipper) , sit on a chair almost naked with a wet sheet cover your body. Wait, there is more. They patients/residents are left in the hall way for a good 10 to 20 minutes all wet. You may ask why they do that. What a coincident? I have asked the same question many times. No one can answer this question. The Managements do not care. I was asked if I could pay for my mom to get better care in the same place. To my surprise, your love ones' insurance does not get them sufficient care, but cold cash will. My mother was treated very inhumane in the shower. A male came to force her out of the shower with 2 females. She screamed for help, but no one heard her. She had asked them many, many times that she did not want a male to give her a shower or go into the shower when she was necked. They did not listen to her or cared at all. Her privacy and rights were badly violated. She is very upset and afraid of them now. She has isolated herself in her room. This is a place where money talks and humanity walks. :( read more

I cannot express the heartache my loved one and I have had in dealing with Covenant Care, the corporation that runs La Jolla Nursing and Rehab. Covenant Care is the 19th largest nursing home chain in the country and makes around $500,000 a year however not all of their facilities are profitable. It's clear those that aren't will be "squeezed" to ensure at least less of a loss. It may come as a surprise to some that making money is what drives this industry not good will. My loved one has been there for a bit over two years. We have fought many battles with La Jolla over Medi-Cal, psychoactive medication, relatives of roommates who were verbally abusive to my loved one, frequently intolerable food, theft of personal belongings, and a generally inadequate number of lower-end staff for long-term care (their record for short-term care and therapy may be relatively good but that does not apply to us). A recurring lack of professionalism at La Jolla concerns me and a quick search on the internet under "lying in nursing homes" shows there are industry-wide problems with credibility. Yes, it is shocking and that's precisely why it goes on--the public does not anticipate it. Nursing home residents pass from the scene in one way or another and their story is forgotten. La Jolla was recalcitrant in returning our overpayments on estimated share of cost for Medi-Cal and gave in only after our attorney called them. On some phone calls, after being transferred by the receptionist, the person answering simply picked up the receiver and put it down again apparently not wanting to speak to anyone. In this time we have seen three executive directors and the current one (there since February) claims he will be there only in an interim capacity. The previous director stormed out after eight months--I saw him on that day and he was quite upset nearly running into my loved one in a wheelchair and me. A large number of people left during his tenure. About 75 percent of the staff from a time spanning back to the midpoint of the previous director's tenure has moved on. It seems many employees were victims of budgetary cutbacks to try to save a money-loosing facility. I was told it was loosing money by one of the doctors there and this is obvious in not only the cutbacks but difficulty CNAs have in procuring supplies. I visit as much as I can due to my loved one's particular needs and the inadequacy of staffing. One of the few English (as first language) staffers told me that they are trying to save money and hire administrative folks at lower rates but this will hurt /them in the long run as their professional image would decline. No doubt folks who were perfectly good at their jobs were let go and others saw the handwriting on the wall and left. The staffer told me that when these people left there was nothing told remaining staff about each person except that "they were no longer there." It had a bit of 1950's horror film flavor to it--staff just kept disappearing and those remaining were given the same cryptic response when they inquired where the others had gone. Most of the CNAs are immigrants who speak little English; they comprehend even less and are reluctant to ask questions. Morale was and still is terribly low among CNAs and while I appreciate their hard work they are simply not trained well enough to relate to senior English-only speakers, especially those who are hard of hearing. While the concept of professionalism is not completely alien to them their approach to it is not what an older native-born person would expect. It is a massive change for older folks from the predominantly English-speaking environment many have grown up with--I fear many never make a comfortable adjustment. Staff's constant communication among themselves in mostly Tagalog annoys "higher-functioning" residents (including my loved one) who feel that they are hiding things from them. It has been said on this website that some staff seems to be there to collect a paycheck and nothing else. Unfortunately this is true not only here but in many industries with workers in the 20-35 age group. Usually these individuals, like the former CNA allowed to work here with a blue Mohawk haircut, don't seem to last very long. I understand that only those who apply can be hired for a job but most Americans have no idea what kind of situation they are putting their future health care in by not calling for better training and pay for lower-end health workers and demanding comprehensible, conversational English as a job requirement. As I've said, most people here work to the best of what training they have. It is the corporate head of the fish that smells bad first and generally the bigger they are the worse they smell.
