During a recent visit to Chicago, came here with some friends for dinner and drinks. Food/drinks: Extensive food menu. I had the chips and guacamole as well as the ceviche trio. Everything was fresh, and the ceviche was definitely more creative than much of what I've had in the past; fish and fruit versions were really tasty. Chips were clearly fresh and maybe a little oily for me. Tip: gluten free? Make sure to ask for the gluten free chips (apparently some use flour as well). For drinks, the cocktail list looked great but everything has tequila, which I don't drink. A bummer but I had a glass of rosé, which was okay. Ambiance: I definitely felt like I was young and happening again! The place has outdoor seating, two rooms inside (with nice big windows), and i heard there's a roof top. Place was packed on a Thurs eve and music was great but a little loud. Service: Good, friendly, attentive. Didn't rush us, which was so appreciated. I have walked by this place for a coupe of years especially in the summer time when they have the windows open. I was looking for a brunch pace for the final day of restaurant week and this was one of a few places that had open reservations (Resy). Me and a friend came over around 11:30 this past Sunday before the snow began to fall. Was seated by the staff which is a pretty good and friendly crew. The menu looked very delicious so we didn't feel that we could go wrong with anything and we ultimately decided that we would get different things to share. We started with the Dulce de Leche Toast and the vegetarian tacos. The toast was basically a Mexican bread roll with cinnamon, sugar, strawberries, blueberries and topped with ice cream. Very good and bigger what what I expected...quite filling also. Vegetarian tacos were very good as well. The next course brought us Desayuno Sandwich Isla Mujeres and the Carnitas Con Papitas. The sandwich was good and a nice size...spicy mayo definitely added a good kick to the sandwich. The carnitas was missing some flavor so salsa verde was requested and helped the dish. Drinks here are dope as well. The mezcal old fashioned might be the best one I've had and the La Mariposa was good but can be a bit on the sweeter side. To top us off they gave us Besito which is a butter cookie sandwich filled with cajeta (Mexican caramel sauce) along with chocolate sauce and guava ice cream. Very good!!! I was excited about checking out La Josie and was happy they had two ceviche options without shellfish that I could choose from. I went with the mahi mahi ceviche and highly recommend it, though it's a small plate portion so definitely have an appetizer or another dish to complement it. Either guac and chips or the chorizo queso fundido are good app options. At brunch they offer bottomless mimosas or bloody marys for $25 till 3:30. My only qualm with the restaurant (and the reason its not 5 stars) is that you can't make a reservation specifically for the rooftop. Of course that's where everyone would prefer to be, so charge a fee for it or make it an option in the reservation system like other restaurants in the area. read more

I went to La Josie with a friend and had a great time! I have heard great things about La Josie so I was really excited to try it. For I cocktail I got the Verdita Tabernita, which was a tequila based cocktail that was very green and refreshing. For starters, my friend and I shared the guacamole and Queso Fundido. My friend is a regular at La Josie and she have been raving about the Queso Fundido.... She was not wrong. It was fantastic! For my entree I had the Baja fish taco salad. The beer batter on the fish was light and airy. The salad was really filling and flavorful. After a talking with our bartender Carlos we decided to split a Mezcal tequila flight. Neither my friend or I are big Mezcal finds, but the ones that we tried had a wide range of flavors and opened my pallet to Mezcal. read more

This was a fantastic Sunday evening spot. We were able to score a reservation for 10 people without a problem and we were seated quickly at one of several longtables in the back of the surprisingly elongated and slim restaurant. Ambiance game was strong with a candlestick centerpiece. Their cocktail menu has both diverse and depth. I picked El Guapo and fell in love with the complementary spice of the jalapeño salts with the refreshing rinse of the cucumber and grapefruit. The smoky mezcal was definitely appreciable. I accidentally finished it before my main meal even came out, oops. I grabbed the langosta lobster tacos and they were out of this world. Perfect mix of citrusy vegetables with the lightly charred but fresh lobster pieces wrapped in three soft tacos. I added on a Mac y queso (Mac n cheese) and the small side serving packed just the right amount of punch with its crispy top layer of panko and sweet corn, making it the perfect pairing with the tacos. The restaurant has a few different sections to it. It looked like there was a downstairs, and we sat on the first floor across from the kitchen at high top tables. As with anywhere in the west loop you should expect to need a reservation on the weekends. We went on a Friday night with 5 people, made the reservation a few days in advance on resy (note they charge if you cancel within a certain timeframe). The restaurant itself is dimly lit for a cozy but lovely atmosphere. I was seated close to my own party and the people next to us. The volume in the restaurant was loud but not enough that you can't carry on a conversation. Our server was very nice. Now the main attraction was the food. Everyone the table agreed it was all fresh and amazing. Personally I ordered the Baja tacos (comes with three) and it was so fresh and tasty. We also got a dessert to share and the gelato was honestly heaven. I'd return just for a spoonful of their cinnamon dolce gelato. Super fun spot! Didn't have a reservation but put our name in the waitlist and got in within 15 min. We sat at the rooftop bar and it was so lovely. You don't hear any of the street noise and you feel like you're in a little oasis. Bartender was amazing and made us scratch cocktails with all of the ingredients we said we liked. Food is wonderful as well. Really fun flavor variations on classic Mexican food. 10/10 was a great night! read more

I am an absolute fan of this place. We sat at the open rooftop, what a beautiful view. Had some heated lamps going up there with some string lights giving it such a cozy feel. Our waitress was very friendly, bubbly, and gave amazing recommendations. Their ceviche was soooo good and so was all their food. I was especially excited about all their mezcal cocktail options and they definitely didn't disappoint. Including the mezcal old fashioned which merged two of my fav things. 3 of us came here for a Saturday brunch/lunch. Nice tiled bar & restaurant space. I looked at the menu & my 1st thought was: this is a very pricey Mexican restaurant... the food better be outstanding, gourmet level. So that set up some expectations. We ea ordered 1 entree, 1 cocktail & some chips/salsa to share. And everything was extra: so if you want a protein, guacamole etc it can rally add up. I ordered a modest sized $19 chilaquiles... but ended up paying $25 for some chips covered in salsa with a chicken breast. Food itself, overall was tasty, but portions definitely on the smaller side. My cocktail was good, but $18 good. I don't think they rival the other great cocktail bars around here... and I guess you could say this is the "new normal" in Fulton district. What shocked us was the bill: $155 for a light lunch for 3 people. $29 enchiladas...!! 3 tacos for $30... that's crazy. And $24 burritos: need I say more? Since I was treating my family & we were really hungry, I couldn't really walk out ... but if I had been on my own & sitting down, after noticing the pricing, I probably would've ordered 1 drink & left. So maybe this is more of an evening drink place, to try some unusual tequilas... rather than somewhere to get a good meal for a reasonable price. Or maybe if you're on the company credit card, it doesn't matter at all. I gave it 2 stars primarily because the food, sizing didn't match the pricing: if I'm paying regular entree prices ($25-29) for the food, it better very good & a decent portion. Great hip Mexican place in the West Loop. Large agave bar with excellent craft cocktails. Ordered El Guapo, which means "the handsome one" I'm not that handsome. But they gave it to me anyways. And it was delicious. Refreshing blend of cucumber and mezcal, served with a salted rim. I got the chicken enchiladas. With green salsa. It was great. Like really really great. Like I'm thinking about going back there again tonight and getting the exact same thing. My date got tacos al pastor. They were also great. I feel that dish is a litmus test for any Mexican restaurant, and they passed with flying colors. Will definitely be back. read more

Great spot in the West Loop. I've been twice now, and I would definitely come back. Great drinks and great food. The Baja tacos are the best fish tacos I've ever had. I normally hate beer battered fish, but this one is fantastic. I'm not sure what they add to the batter, but I can't come here and not get them. My friend and I split the traditional guac and chips, which was tasty I also had the pina colada and the maracuya hallelujah and enjoyed both. The pina colada didn't have too much coconut, which is a huge win for me. Service was great, the place is nice, spacious, and clean, and the atmosphere was just right. I only knock off a star for the slightly high prices and not a huge special selection for happy hour. However, I would happily return regardless. read more

This place is super fun and cute. Our server Megan was awesome! Her recommendations were spot on. I tried the lobster tacos - Delicious!! The guacamole - very flavorful with fresh chips The shrimp brussel sprouts - meh not that great a combo Brussel Spouts - Very delicious alone! Don't need shrimp! Corn Elote style - I loved this recipe it was smokey, with bites of cheese and mayo. I would get this again with the lobster tacos. For drinks I was on a Mezcal kick so I tried a few drinks all were delicious. We didn't like the tequila old fashioned at all and Megan was cool enough to let us try something different. Everything else hit the spot. Definitely coming back. Apparently it's the hot spot for after work drinks at the office. I had no clue! There is a cute little lounge area downstairs where you can take photos complete with a cool lighting mirror for the perfect selfie. Went here for dinner today. Sat outdoors! Our server outdoors was amazing! I say this because it is important! My last review here was more about the service and I want to give credit where it's due! Really had a great time! The food was delicious! We had the shrimp quesadilla which was so different- like our server explained- like fried empanadas in a light sauce! Amazing flavors! We were invited to dinner with some friends and this was the first time we've ever been. The check-in area is rather tight but it was okay because we hardly had to wait. This restaurant is located right at the beginning of all the must-try restaurants in the West loop area. It is right across the street from Au Cheval and Haymarket. We were seated and upon being seated, we were presented with the menus. They had a good array of starters, enchiladas, tacos and full entrees. The best part of the menu was the drinks. They are known for their margaritas and micheladas. What I'm going to remember about this place are two things: 1) the wait staff didn't need to write down any of our orders and got them spot on and 2) the food was really good... Not the best Mexican food but good enough to want to try again. We topped the dinner with a shared flourless chocolate cake. The Aguachile Rojas ceviche is the best that I've had since returning from Costa Rica and I usually prefer a fish based over shrimp ceviche and usually am not a fan when it is tomato based but it was DELICIOUS. We also had the ribeye taco on special which was good but lacked certain flavor components. The toppings did not contribute much outside of the additional crunch and a tangly sauce could've assisted so I drizzled some of our leftover ceviche juice over. I would return. read more

Really enjoyable dinner experience at La Josie with friends! Located in the food-centric Fulton Market area, it's a tasty and intimate space great for dates, drinks, and friends! I visited with with two of my friends on a Friday night and the place was full, so I highly recommend getting a reservation. We had one so we were seated immediately. The space is pretty dimly lit which really sets the vibe. We ordered the guac trio to start, and then I got the chicken enchiladas with salsa verde. My friends ordered the asada tampiqueña to share with sides of mac y queso and rice. The guac was fantastic - highly recommend the trio as each one was unique and had its own flair. We argued about which was best lol, but I say it's either the piña (nice tart sweetness) or the tradicional (can't go wrong with a classic). The chips were also so fresh, crispy, and the perfect amount of salty. We enjoyed them so much we ended up eating almost a whole basket each (we weren't charged for chip basket refills)! Then for the entrees, the enchiladas were delicious and very filling. Felt like good portion sizes overall. My only gripe would be that the chicken was fattier than I'd like, and due to the dim lighting it was hard to see what my meal looked like (the salsa verde looked more like dark brown mole in the lighting). My friends also said their dishes were amazing. One of my favorite things were the plates and bowls - the designs are so pretty and really tie all the plates and dishes together. Little touches like this really make the meal and experience for me. All in all, we had a great experience at La Josie and I think we will be back! read more

Went for a girls night out and we were seated all the way in the back .... Th music was really loud hard to have a conversation. We ordered a whole bunch of stuff. The gauc and dips were good , the empanadas hit the spot the veggie tacos meh. The desserts were ok.... Interesting twist on the tresleches cake with raspberries not very moist, churros we're ok and so was the sorbet. I had the mezcal with japlepno drink not a fan. Overall subpar experience. Went there last night during my visit in Chicago. We were craving Mexican food, so we decided to try this place. Food was pretty good, with the green enchiladas being the best plate on the table. Such a fun spot to go with friends for drinks or dinner! Their drinks are truly unbeatable - I got the mezcal margarita and will definitely be back to try others. The staff is really helpful with talking you through the drink options and recommending things, which I appreciate! For food, we wanted to share a few things, so we got the guacamole trio, elote, and three types of tacos. The guac trio is their tradicional, the piña, and the elote - they were all honestly very good but I couldn't taste a huge difference between the tradicional and the piña and so next time would maybe just order one. Getting the elote was also a great idea to have on the table! For tacos, we got: al pastor, pescado, and the cosecha. Al pastor and pescado were amazing (of course...al pastor is always my favorite) but the cosecha surprised me by how flavorful it was! I don't usually order veggie tacos but after eating this I might start. I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the options. I also think for a restaurant in this area/as well-known as La Josie the prices are pretty reasonable. For three people this was way less than I've spent at other West Loop restaurants (including 2 drinks and splitting all the food) and I left feeling full. All in all I recommend! read more

Let me start by saying how much I loved this restaurant. I use to work in the West Loop and had many team meetings here! My team and I loved their food everything was super flavorful! During the pandemic I was happy to see you could still order take out! I bragged on this place every chance I got. Before the pandemic I had almost every business lunch or dinner here. I bragged on this place so much that my friend from out of town demanded we order food for our in house movie night. I ordered about $120 worth of food and had a friend pick it up for us and drop it off to my home as the delivery service was out range for my address. My friend and I were so excited to dig in when he noticed several hairs in his food. I opened my container and there was another small hair. We were immediately turned off and could not eat anything we ordered. We had to order food via uber eats from somewhere else. I called La Josie and explained what happened. I spoke with a man who stated they were busy and asked if I could call back later or he could call me back later about the hair in my food. I told him no, because we were out $120 dollars without anyway to bring the food back. I requested a refund. He told me again they were to busy to handle my request. After asking to speak with a manger he said he was the manager and told me I would need to send in a photo of the food. We took the photo I attached but tossed everything else in the trash. I told him I could do that and he again told me how busy they were and was not very empathetic. He suggested the food courier service I used may have had something to do with the hair as the cooks there wear hair nets. I explained I did not use a courier service and the bags were stapled closed when I received them. He took no responsibility and I am completely turned off and upset. They lost a valued customer who has sent multiple people to their establishment...sad read more

Delicious! Jessica was our server and she was super attentive and friendly. Today was the first day their patio was open and we were lucky to enjoy our meal with nice weather for our date night. Most of their cocktails are made with mezcal which I am not a fan of but they did have one cocktail, la luchador that was refreshing and tasty. We started with the ceviche trio. It came with tiger shrimp which had the most spiced kick but nothing too unbearable, the mahi mahi which I thought had the most citrus and the striped bass which was sweet and creamy was my favorite. For our entree we shared the Baja fried mahi mahi which were good. The tacos come 3 to an order and the homemade tortillas were soft. I could eat a stack of them alone. We also shared the Cosecha enchiladas. They are a vegetarian option. It was oyster mushrooms, sweet potatoes, butternut squash and cheese. We went half mole and half verde sauce which was a good combination per Jessica's recommendation. I do wish it was heavier on the mushrooms. I will say that the other veggies were cooked to my liking and they were crunchy. My wife prefers softer cooked potatoes and squash. We also ordered a side of mac y queso which I'd really recommend. We finished up with the banana blueberry tres leches...I'd order 2 servings if I had room in my belly. read more

I knew it was a reason I waited to rate them! We came in on a Friday night at 1130pm. Mind you we called at 1107 to see if food was still being served because we were leaving an establishment were the kitchen was closed, we were told yes the kitchen is open until 12am. We arrive at 1124am, we're seated for 2 of a 4 party. We order various menu items and drinks. Drinks arrive in 5mins, we assume dinner is on the way. Tuh!!!!! NOT.... At 11:59pm they seat our other 2 guests and tell us that the food we waited 30mins on cant be prepared due to technical difficulties in the kitchen. WTTTFFFFFFFFFF??? Stumbled into this restaurant by chance for a late dinner and was really pleasantly surprised: the atmosphere and vibe was really nice and we had a great table near the front of the restaurant where we could look out at the street and West Loop. We went back about a month and a half ago during covid and sat on the patio [it was a beautiful day out so we luckily had no issues on the patio weather-wise]. Our waitress was great! The roja was also really good. None of us were huge fans of the verde salsa, though! Rajas Poblanas Queso Fundido : So yummy! Came with some fresh corn tortillas and the queso fundido was super flavorful! I added some of our salsa onto the tortilla before adding the cheese and it was perfect! Chilaquiles with Roja Sauce : We had ours topped with scrambled eggs! There is a bean mixture underneath all of the chips and it is so good! Be sure to scoop through the chips to the mixture!! Hongos con vegetale brunchy burrito : A breakfast burrito with mushrooms - what is there not to love!! The burrito itself was super flavorful and came with a sauce on the side. The sauce was good, but I just used the habenero salsa that I was so in love with! Huarache : this was a thick corn shell that they used as the base and it was LOADED with mushrooms and various vegetables and topped with some delicious garnishes that included pickled red onions, spinach and a salsa! It was a unique item that I don't usually get and I loved it! Mac y Queso : we almost didn't get this because of ALL the food we had ordered but we were so glad we did! It was just a Mexican take on a classic so it had a slight kick! super creamy and delicious! Overall, we were SO satisfied with the food [and had a LOT of it!!]! We all shared the ceviche and it was light and fresh, just the right amount of food to hold us over until our main course. My friends got the chilaquiles and loved them.
