We drove all the way from Des Moines to check this place out. Over a 2 & a half hour drive. IT WAS WORTH IT! The vibes were immaculate. Very authentic & delicious. The grill was PILED with steak. The wait was somewhat long but again, worth it! Great variety on the menu. Kind employees. We asked for flan & were sent to the back to get it. That's when you know it's good! & it was delicious! Almost had a cheesecake texture which was different for me. Only disappointment is it's so far away! We will definitely make the drive again though. Definitely check it out! The biggest thing I'm upset about is I didn't have my phone so I could take pictures of the amazing food we had at this restaurant. The woman who takes your orders behind the counter and interacts with the kitchen is truly amazing. As busy as she got, she never lost it. I got the shrimp tostada, which had more shrimp on it than I think anything I've ever ordered in a restaurant. The vegetables were fresh. The tostada was hot and crisp and their sauce that you put on it that they make is simply amazing . It had the perfect amount of spice for me although a bit spicy it was perfect for me. I can't say enough . While I was waiting for my tostada to come out. My husband got his shredded chicken nachos by the time I got over to the table, which wasn't very long. Wife doesn't like this style chicken and said was good. Comes either sour cream/cheese/lettuce:diced tomato. Both great but carnitas much more flavorful than pollo. Stopped in for a late night meal with a big group of friends after biking all day. All of us were from out of town/state and were thankful this restaurant is open late! Unfortunately, the fryer was down so we were unable to get some of our first choice menu options. However, second place options were certainly great! I enjoyed veggie tacos, others liked their various burritos with beans and rice, and overall this satisfied our craving for Mexican comida. This is undoubtedly the best restaurant I've been to in Iowa, and one of the best (if not THE best) Mexican restaurants I've been to. The staff is very friendly and service is order at the counter style. They have paper menus up front, which are handy when you can't read the menu on the wall up behind the counter. I opted for the carnitas burrito and lengua taco. I had never had lengua before but some others indicated that it was good. First, the taco. The lengua was so soft and the best tongue I had ever had. Usually the texture is off but this one was on point and delicious. But the real star of the show was the carnitas burrito. OMG. It was love at first bite. The meat was seasoned amazingly well and by far the best carnitas I've ever had. There were some other fillings in there but it seemed to be about 90% carnitas. I've never had such a meat centric burrito but it worked so well. The meat was the star and I was happy to have as much of it at possible. I'm already dreaming about going back. This is an absolute gem in Storm Lake and can't be missed if you're in the area. read more

The locals really like to save time so they call it La-Wah's. The quesadilla is delicious. Their tacos were delicious. My girlfriend loves their torta I have not tried it yet other than a couple bites but I think the couple bites that I had were really delicious. One time I had a chorizo quesadilla, okay maybe it was two times. Again, delicious. They can get really busy but they go through the line fairly quickly and the lady may seem like she's really mean but she isn't. read more

This is the best Mexican fare I have encountered outside of LA or Phoenix. The Birria is spot on. I also recommend the Menudo, when they have it on weekends. On week days, I order the Lengua tacos. The Lengua is very tender and moist. A definite stop, if you are in Storm Lake. read more

When I visited, the price was incredible at $5 per burrito. I'm not sure if Storm Lake and the surrounding area knows what they have here. This is a true Northwest Iowa gem. You can't get much better than this. I have to visit every time I visit Iowa, which doesn't happen very often anymore. It's worth a long drive just to try it out. I've only been to two restaurants in Storm Lake (the other is a disappointing bbq place that overcooked my steak to death), and I honestly don't see a reason to try anyplace else for a while. - The tacos are delicious, especially the fish taco. - The salsa is out of this world hot, and so satisfying with a coke. There's also a less-spicy green salsa that's really good. - The space is really cool. It's a street-level unit in an older building on the main historic strip, with tin ceilings and everything. It's so encouraging to see spaces like this open and thriving, while they remain shuttered in many Iowa towns. - The food is affordable. My usual is a fish taco and a carne asada taco, beans & rice, chips & salsa, and a diet coke, and it's all under $8. read more

This place has a loyal following for great authentic Mexican food and cheap prices. If you have never been here, you order at the counter. Ask for a menu...you can't go wrong Twih the tacos. Everything on tacos means onion, cilantro, hot sauce. You can add lettuce, cheese, sour cream if you want. Try the Jamaica or horchata to drink or grab a glass bottle from the cooler. Ask for hot sauce if there is none out. Take a seat and wait for your food order to be called out. Eat. Pay at counter when finished. This was my first time here. These are the BEST carne asada burritos I've ever had. Just a soft tasty tortilla completely filled with beef from end to end. No sour cream, no rice. Mmmm. Pretty quick considering everything is made to order. Fun decor, good customer service. The only thing I'd point out is they should warn you about the spiciness. Both trips, yes I went twice, I ordered a beef Burrito with beans, cheese and avocado. The avocado is not guacamole it's sliced avocado which I dig. They offer two sauces which I traded off between bites. Yum! They have great pricing, do offer beer and I only wish they could relocate closer to me. My wife enjoyed her her el pastor burrito as much as I did mine. The food is always solid here, so no complaints in that department. They deserve those four stars for the food alone. I almost always get the steak burrito and it is delicious. The problem comes with the ordering system them have. In a fast food setting the custom here is to order then eat and then pay. This is odd and they should adopt the more conventional model of order-pay-eat. Their current system creates two separate lines that are managed by the same person who's attention is constantly divided. I have learned that if you ask they will let you pay after you order, but I always feel bad about doing it. I just don't want to wait in another line later. Overall I highly recommend this place. Just come when it isn't busy so you don't have to wait in two massive lines. read more

It's the REAL DEAL. This place is THE favorite restaurant for the young people of Storm Lake. The food is authentic and delicious. When our grown children come home they have to have at least one meal from La Jua's. We haven't ordered anything that wasn't delicious. You place your order, find a booth, and wait til they call you to pick up. You can't move the booths around, so not ideal for a large group. This place is Mexican at its best. read more
