Surprisingly good enchilada platter, marinated chicken, spicy, pico de Gayo , black beans, competitive Saint Paul downtown lunch
    Marty W.

Don't hesitate to grab this food court Mexican fast food fiesta in the downtown St Paul skywalk. I'm giving it 3.0 because I don't give "great for what it is reviews." That's said, this place IS great for what it is. Think of lunch here as an indoor kickass food truck built into a mall. I had the enchilada platter with marinated chicken, black beans and rice. The chicken was food court sumptuous and quite flavorful. Slight taste of cilantro in the optional pico de Gayo set the sour cream off just right. The corn tortilla was a bit dry but edible in light of all the other sauces. If the corn tortillas had been fresh I would have considered scoring this as a 4.0. So, if you're looking for a $9 lunch and don't fancy yourself yourself too cool and elite for the food court, grab lunch here.

This is a take out place in the skyways. I love the burrito, taco salad and tamales. The pork tamales seem spicy to me but I love the carnitas for the burrito and taco salad. I find it a little pricey for lunch, my burrito was over $9 after tax. On Tuesdays they have a tamale special, 50% off for a tamale. I get the chicken and vegetarian.

    Friday's enchilada special

For food court food, I like it! Its a bit hidden so when you see potbelly, just keep walking towards Double Tree Hilton sign. You will see it in a closed off section. Each day of the week they have a special and today's special was Enchilada. You get a choice of black or pinto beans, rice, chicken/beef/pork, spice level, tomatoes, cheese and sour cream. I got the chicken enchilada with no beans, spicy. Their spicy sauce alone was good but i asked for additional hot sauce to go and both sauces together was heavenly. The hot sauce they put on your enchilada is green but their to go sauce is red. I had to ask for additional hot sauce because I looooves spicy. I'm glad I found a new place to eat at during lunch.

If you haven't been here, what are you even doing?!…read more My favorite spot for Mexican food is @elburritomercado in St. Paul. You may also recognize their logo at the MN State Fair and their food truck at various events. Overall if you've never been to their actual restaurant and market... you gotta. They have a full market and goods side to find all of your needs to take home and cook. As well as prepared items to bring home, heat and serve. I highly suggest this for taco night at home. Everything is fresh, delicious and made there in house. They have a walk up order area with casual seating, a full sit down restaurant area and an awesome patio. In the warmer months they have their Elotes truck out near the back entrance. The customer service is friendly, welcoming and very helpful if you have questions or need recommendations. I recently was shopping the grab and go deli and was trying to decide what meat to go with and two separate regular shoppers pointed me to some awesome picks so shout out to helpful strangers. I'll pass it along if I see someone staring at the wall of options someday. The staff working the deli window was also extremely helpful in picking out a good salsa heat level and gave a few samples to ensure my decision. Remember always ask for recommendations if you're not sure! My go to items to eat in: Nachos Supremo with chicken (when I want nachos THIS is the dish I want) Burrito Tradicional Churros My favorite grab and go items: El Burrito Mercado Tortilla Chips-these are the best Queso Fundido Nacho Mexican Rice w/veggies Mild Chicken Shredded Beef Ground Beef Guacamole Crema Mexicana Mexican Shredded Melting Cheese Obviously fresh soft tortilla shells are a must here too This place is one I love to point people towards because it's an awesome experience with great food and great people. My wife said I looked like was about to cry when a inch cup of carnitas fell out of my taco and bounced down to the floor. It's the only time I've ever considered grabbing food off the floor it was that delicious(I didn't grab it). Our recent visit my wife got the carnitas tacos, I got the torta and an order of the Rajas and for drinks were ordered the pineapple express margarita and the habanero cilantro margarita. The tacos and quesadillas are solid and definitely worth trying, but I've been disappointed with the burritos and the pork al pastor. The carne asada burrito looked substantial at first, but it was overwhelmingly filled with plain white rice, which made it feel bland and not what I'd expect in terms of flavor or balance. The pork al pastor was even more disappointing. It didn't resemble traditional al pastor in taste or texture. It was overly sweet, lacked depth, and the pork itself was extremely dry, unfortunately dry enough to make it difficult to finish. There are still some good items on the menu, and the service keeps me open to giving them another try but based on my experience, I wouldn't describe the food overall as authentic or five-star quality.

Every time I visit La Costa, I have to get the chips and queso dip. La Costa offers Blanco and Nacho Cheese queso, but I wouldn't know about the Nacho because my heart and soul belong to Blanco. It is, without exaggeration, the best queso in the area. Their chips are also seasoned perfectly! For drinks, I used to ride hard for the Vallarta Margarita because cucumber margs are my favorite. But at La Costa, it's just a tad too spicy for my taste, not that it stopped me from ordering it repeatedly. Then I met the Mangonada Margarita. I am not usually a blended margarita girly, but this one is creamy, smooth, and somehow doesn't require the lung strength of a competitive swimmer to drink through a straw. As for food, I've eaten my way through a decent chunk of the menu. Some highlights are the Fish Tacos, the Ceviche, the Mole Enchiladas, and the Chimichanga. I tried the Camarones A La Costa recently and while they were good, I'm loyal to other dishes on the menu. The mole enchiladas pack heat. The mole sauce sits right at the edge of my maximum spice tolerance (which honestly isn't much). Still, I get them from time to time because they are so good. My husband, who loves spice, thinks they're incredible. The fish tacos are mild but flavorful. The ceviche is also a must if you love seafood. Today I grabbed the chicken chimichanga to go, and they absolutely stuffed this thing with chicken and rice. They also gave me a fat cup of queso on the side, which I deeply respect. I skipped the beans and doubled up on rice. 10/10, would do it again. La Costa stays on my rotation for a reason.
