I have been to La Madeline often in the past and enjoyed it. Today I ordered a side Caesar salad with my lunch and got a salad without a shred of Romaine lettuce in it, all Iceberg . I know the difference. I trained in a 4 year culinary apprenticeship and was an executive chef for 15 years after that. Have seen and handled thousands of heads of both kinds of lettuce. I was told by manager (with some attitude) that it is impossible for me to have received Iceberg there is none in the building. Well I guarantee I got some! I won't be back. If I could start this with a Minus I would. I decided to wake up Friday to La Madeline a French Country Breakfast and Latte to myself, by myself, phone off, no news, just me and my breakfast & Latte. I sat for about 15 minutes for a sausage croissant.....I've been a customer for over 11 yrs in TX it seemed a little long since no one was in front of me waiting for food. When the cashier shows up with my food and Cappachino, I touched my sandwhich & it was cold, I said "Excuse me, can you please have them put this in the microwave for a few seconds? It's cold. You would have thought WW3 was happening. Been meaning to try this place out so ordered what was listed as one of their top items by delivery; the Chicken Parisien sandwich (whole) with a side of Caesar salad. Order arrived early, sandwich was still hot and everything was neatly packaged. Off to a great start! Bread was well baked and had a lovely crust. Chicken inside was very tasty and the gooey melted cheese accompanied by the mayo and bacon (also cooked to perfection) made this sandwich very good! I like that the chicken was sliced quite thin to make the sandwich much more manageable to devour. Caesar salad was a good size and tasted fresh. The grated cheese on the salad was not processed which made the salad high quality in addition to the fresh crouton spears. The price point might be in question if you're ordering from here but I think the quality speaks for itself. I attempted to order a veggie omelet. "I would like to order just a veggie omelet and a coffee, please". You have a choice of three types of meat. "I would just like to order a veggie omelet and a coffee". OK, one vegetable omelet with egg whites. "No, I did not say an egg white omelet real eggs are OK". OK... Rich, creamy...and dreamy...you know the kind of dessert you will dream about and wake yourself up disappointed when you realize you are just dreaming and licking air trying to re-live the taste?Yes, we will certainly be back! Then they say that I have to order at the register first, which is the opposite of what happens at every other location. The girl rings up my purchase, and then asks if I'm getting it to go or eating it here. She was standing right there when the other girl said that I had to order at the register first. Then the people who ordered after me got their food first--two sandwiches and two cups of soup. Like WTF. Severely disappointed. First, we came here for crepes, that's was Indicated on a previous review. For the record there is absolutely no crêpes that are served here. We made an order which took over 30 minutes to arrive to the table, everything we ordered was all premade items, and did not need to be cooked. TLDR: Decent Americanized interpretations of French cuisine with some hits and some big misses. On the follow-up meal with actually food as opposed to pastry, La Madeline was slightly underwhelming, but a decent enough place to eat. As before, the pastry is a strong point. This time I tried the strawberry-rhubarb tart as opposed to the danish. A tad too sweet with the generous amounts of powdered sugar, but tasty and moist. The other standout dish was the Tomato Basil Bacon Croque Monsieur; while I found the tomato soup portion of the entree too sharp and acidic on its own, it is balanced out nicely by the cheese in the Croque Monsieur. This is best described as an open-faced cheese sandwich on French bread, put under a broiler until the cheese was melty and crispy. The turkey with brie sandwich, while lean on the brie, was at least tasty without an over-abundance of sauces. However, the chunk of kryptonite on the menu is by far the 'French Onion Soup'. The beefy broth is decent, but it's less of an onion soup and more a beef soup with chunk of onion inside. Worse, the cheese/bread topping the soup isn't toasted or baked - which lets it morph into a gloppy, soggy mass with the taste and consistency of chewing gum. Avoid this at all costs and stick with the stronger parts of the menu. This place scores a 3 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. Would be OK being seen eating here by Mother Mary. 3 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Joseph good. Came here for lunch one day and wasn't too impressed. It's been a while since I've been to La Madeleine, typically I go to the Great Hills location. This was my first time here, and the food was cold and stale. The soup was cold and bland even with the bacon and cheese. The quiche was overdone and hard. The potato galette was also cold and burnt and had more onion than potato. The bread the offered was also stale. Not impressed with the food or service, I wouldn't return. The parking can be a pain since it's next to Alamo Draft house and there is a very good restaurant next door. read more

My partner and I dined In at 1:00pm on Sunday with our 10 week old baby. After ordering we noticed the restaurant was near empty, however every table inside was still covered in food and dishes. We had to dine outside on a hot Texas day with our newborn baby. The options were 4 tables because again everyone was covered in trash. No outdoor fans, birds eating off of dozens of plates. During our 30 minute visit not a single table was cleared, animals ate off the tables, birds ate off the tables... As we were leaving I also noticed a worker toss trash in the flower bed out front (bottle cap). The food is good but the place is a dump. Terrible. First of all there was one other family of 2 or 3 in front of us. I ordered a large tomato basil soup (already ready) a petite ceasar salad (prepared in seconds in front of you) and a chicken pesto sandwich. I walked out 27 minutes later. The salad was undressed. The large soup I paid for ended up being a small container (they gave me a smaller one), the pasta salad was fine. The piece de resistance was my sandwich. It was the most dry, cold, hard disgusting, skimpy filled thing ever. (see pic!) the bread was cold and hard Mike right out of a fridge or freezer. There was nothing on the disgusting hard bread to moisten it other than one little tomato round. The chicken was on hand my bread and just cold and nasty. It was inedible. Now tell me WHY THE HELL did this take 27 mins? Clearly you made nothing fresh and no customers. This is so depressing. La Madeleine used to be one of my favorite restaurants and I always try to go when I'm near one. The last couple of years it's just gone downhill so badly. I stopped by this location yesterday for a takeout order. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich on sourdough bread. Two women at the register conferred for several minutes about my order. Apparently there was some confusion about the bread selection. Apparently they have no idea what sourdough bread even is. After a while they put my order in and I took it home. Let me emphasize: The two employees have no idea of what sourdough bread is. When I opened my sandwich it was on a ridiculous baguette of some kind. I ended up just eating the filling. They have changed their chicken salad recipe, and now it's just kind of bland. Paying that kind of money for a couple of tablespoons of bad chicken salad is the last straw. Three separate eating sections, two with fireplace near by. The staff was extremely friend which could be because they were void of other customers. I love La Madeleine! I usually enjoy everything I choose here. There are some things that I have regretted ordering, but that's because I personally didn't like it and I was trying something new. My go to is mostly breakfast, I've enjoyed every breakfast item they offer at some point in the years I've eaten here. All tasty! For lunch I go with a salade sampler; Caesar salad, French onion soup and chicken salad is my favorite combo. I enjoy their sandwiches as well but don't order those often. The Chicken la Madeleine is my favorite entree, the chicken is always tender and full of flavor. I change up the sides when I'm not feeling rice & broccoli. Their flavored tea is great during the summer and their mimosa is good way to start your Sunday brunch! The only reason I'm not giving a 5 star rating is because I have been coming here since they opened and it has slid downhill a little bit. The team working now stay super focused on what they're doing at the moment, rather than checking on customers, you have to get their attention for any question you have. Their coffee used to be delicious and I'd come here vs Starbucks/other coffee shop, now unless I order a latte or Americano I steer clear of the coffee because it isn't good. They seem to have gotten worse. They didn't have any forks and the knives and spoons were dirty with pieces of food still stuck. Everything is self service except them bringing the food to you, which they don't give you silverware or napkins but they ask for a tip. They no longer give bread with jam. When I asked about the forks, the guy said he would ask about it but they should have them in a few minutes. The guy never came back and they never had forks available during the hour we were there. I had the chicken sandwich but the chicken was precooked and cold. The sandwich looked like it was made in a rush although it took around ten minutes to receive it. There were dirty tables with forks and no one cleaned them up during the time we were there but the place wasn't crowded at all. The prices do not justify the terrible experience. Lately, my experience has shifted to a bad experience. I was there last Sunday and ended up leaving. First of all, I counted 8 tables that still had dirty dishes on them. There was only one young lady cleaning the tables. However, in the to go area another young lady was slowly filling baggies with eating utensils and napkins. The line was all the way to the door. We waited about 15 minutes to get to the cashier. I asked for a double Americano and the cashier rolled her eyes and said that the coffee machine was down. That's when I decided to leave. This experience was very disappointing. I can't blame this train wreck on the workers. The responsibility goes to the manager. I really hope they get it together! read more

Been here a bunch of times, and have enjoyed it but this last experience was so horrible, I'm not going back. I went in just for the bakery items. I ordered several things from the case - croissants, holiday cookies, etc and also 2 mini sea salt baguettes. The clerk rang it up, I paid, and she put everything but the baguettes in my bag. When I asked why she didn't just give me the mini baguettes from the display case, she said those were just for display; the fresh ones are in the back. She set my order to the side and rang up the next 3 customers in line. Then she filled a to go order. No problem...I'll wait for fresh baguettes! Finally I saw her go to the back, and I could see she was speaking with someone who directed her to come back to the display case and get a full sized baguette. She got the full sized baguette from the display case and took it to the person in the kitchen. She emerged a few seconds later with a full sized baguette cut into two pieces. She put them in a bag and handed them to me. I told her 1) that came from the display case that you said was just for display - that those aren't fresh and 2) that's not what I ordered anyway. That's a full sized regular baguette cut in half, not 2 mini sea salt baguettes. The truth is, I don't give a rat's butt if it's a big baguette or a small one, but at this point, it's the principle of the matter. She made me wait, then gave me what she already told me isn't fresh bread and tried to pass it off like it was what i ordered. I didn't argue, I just asked for the manager. Manager comes by with a big attitude (and i'll just add that this is maybe 2pm in the afternoon; not busy time for the restaurant , though there was a steady line at the bakery). I explained to the manager, as I explained above, what happened. Her answer,"So, what do you want?" Me: "I'd like 2 fresh mini sea salt baguettes." Her: "That's what you got." Me: "No, I got a full sized display baguette cut in half and passed off as fresh bread, and that only after waiting behind other customers for the kitchen person to direct the bakery clerk to complete my order." Her: "I am sorry you had to wait in line like everybody else. What do you want me to do?" Me: "Nothing. Here's the baguette. You can keep it. I absolutely hate giving places low Star reviews. I always try to give the benefit of the doubt. I mean, hey, everyone has a bad day, right? Unfortunately, this place was so bad I had to try to warm people if I could. This entire thing happened over 2 visits (gave them a second chance) so I lost hope for them. First visit we went to grab some pastries later in the day/early evening. My wife has been DYING for an eclair so I told her we can go grab her one as well as I wanted something sweet too. We walk in and literally every person we saw just seem to be absolutely miserable. I get it, nobody really likes working on a Saturday evening, especially in food service. I've been there and done that myself. But literally it looked like every person there was just completely dead on the inside. There was already someone in front of us and more people came in behind us and the person taking the order seem to be very short with them man ordering in front of us. He kept asking for the pastry that he had already paid for and she seemed to not understand that nobody had got him the pastry. That entire back and forth took almost 5 minutes. We go up to order and she could barely be heard over the noises of the restaurant. She was talking so quietly. When my wife kept asking her to repeat what she was saying she seemed to get very irritated. We got our pastries and left. We got the seasonal lemon chocolate chunk cookie, a chocolate tart and a lemon tart because they were out of the eclairs. The cookie was really good and so was the lemon tart. That is why they get the two stars. We went back the next morning for breakfast. We figured maybe the morning crew would be better off, especially earlier in the day. Boy were we wrong. Again. Every single person working there seemed to hate their life and hate being there. Stood in line to order and ordered the Croque Madame with an over medium egg, some other strawberry French toast, a side of sausage and soft drinks. We step aside and they start taking the next person's order while we are just kind of standing there. Looking around where we get our cups for the soft drink. I decided to just grab a table while my wife waited for the person to finish taking the next customer's order to ask for our drink cups. From the time we sat at the table after ordering to the time our food actually got set in front of us, was more than an hour. The restaurant was not very full at all and several other tables could be heard. Complaining about the wait. My wife's French toast came out ice cold and rock hard as well as the sausage. Patty. My sandwich was somewhat warm on the inside but the egg was completely overcooked and everything was extremely bland and tasteless. The tastiest thing on my plate was the leafy greens with balsamic. We ended up grabbing a couple more cookies and just left. My wife even made the comment that every single person there look like they were being forced to work in a slave camp. Not quite sure what needs to happen here. I know every business has been hit hard by COVID as well as labor shortage but these poor workers need something. The first time we went to this location, the food tasted like it was cooked or rolled in cleaning supplies. We had to throw it all out, and despite contacting them, we never got a refund. We waited a year and gave them another try- pastries to go, picked up curbside. Food was good and we hoped the previous time was a fluke. Went to have a late lunch in person and the ice dispenser on the drink machine was dripping green slime and had green slime and what looked like algae visible in the plastic ice dispenser. Needless to say, we requested a refund and left without eating or drinking anything. If the part visible to customers is allowed to be filthy enough to have visible dripping slime, I worry about the kitchen and could never feel comfortable eating at this location again. I will say they were taking the machine apart and cleaning it when we left, but that was only AFTER first trying to convince me the green slime was "water" (not a joke, the first employee told me that).
