Went to this restaurant for the first time today. Disappointed to say the least. Our server was great, the food was good until I found a piece of splenda wrapper inside of the pilon of my mofongo. The server took action right away and apologize. The manager didn't even come out to apologize and even acknowledged the situation that just happen. His excuse was that we had already eaten our food. What are we supposed to do after I eat half of my mofongo then ask for a to go box to find out the rest of the mofongo had the splenda wrapper in it. Eventually it was going to end up in my mouth. Man...as a Puerto Rican trying to get rekindled with his time away from the island, this place certainly didn't do anything good for me. The waiter had the personality of a cardboard box. Puerto Ricans can talk up a storm, he barely said anything (despite him being fluent in Spanish) so I already felt uncomfortable trying to converse with him. Second thing was the lack of important and staple ingredients for a lot of the dishes, since they ran out of platanos, tequila, and meat for the dish called Ropa Vieja. Any Puerto Rican restaurant that runs out of platanos is really less than marginal. Service was slow, and we walked out after getting a watered down Piña Colada and a Malta from being in complete disappointment. Settled for Taco Palenque and luckily didn't leave that restaurant disappointed despite it being a fast-food joint. They need to get their act together. read more

I must say, the criollo sampler did not disappoint. The papas relleno were really good. My main course was mediocre. The pork lacked salt, I asked for mojo to de ajo and that lacked salt and the acidity. The rice had a good texture, again it lacked a pinch of salt. The flavors were subdued. Every time I hit San Antonio La Marginal WAS a must go to. We left there & I was so thoroughly disappointed. The pernil was tough, dry & bland with no spices. The pastel was miserly meatless. the appetizer combo plate were so small. The rice OMS it was mushy & flavorless. And to top it off the food was on the cold side. There wasn't that many patrons (used to be packed) we waited over 40 minutes just for the APPETIZER. I was mighty disappointed as I had bragged to my party of 4 how great this secret gem was. A friend who is of Puerto Rican origin has talked about having a taste of home for some time, so today we made the trip from Kerrville to San Antonio. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately. Although I have eaten in many countries throughout the world, this was my first venture in Puerto Rican cuisine. We opted for the buffet as that seemed the most popular with the surrounding tables. My friend was going from one dish to another, telling me what it was and moving so fast it was difficult keeping pace. So, I just took a little of everything! The rice with pigeon peas was very good, the white rice fluffy but the seafood and chicken with rice, not good to my taste but then I don't much care for seafood, so I can't fault the restaurant. Two types of bean soup, pinto (or perhaps red--it was difficult to tell) and black--both had excellent, and different, flavor profiles. The surprise was the yucca--nice flavor and texture; slight root vegetable (closest to potato) taste which was quite pleasant. The chicken stew was delicate albeit flavorful. I did not try the roasted chicken but opted for the roasted pork. While the flavor was good, it was dry and cold. The several deserts were as good as or better than most. All in all, a pleasant meal and both my friend and I were pleased. The decor is individualized to the restaurant. On one wall is depicted Old San Juan; this was part mural and part 3-D accents. Both the restaurant and buffet area were very clean; plates were removed quickly from the tables when patrons departed. The service was friendly but spotty. We were asked if we were having the buffet and told them "no" because we had in mind the plates we wanted, being that we have had and like Puerto Rican food. The food here is wonderful. I don't know how they make their hot sauce but it's like a Puerto Rican god gifted them the recipe. Nothing on the menu is sub par. All perfectly cooked and tastes amazing. The interior is super clean and very well done. THE ONLY REASON, I didn't do a 5th star is because the checkout process is a bit uncomfortable. We were brought a tablet where we have to tip and everything with the waiter standing right next to you. It gives 15% 20% etc and yes a custom tip button but who wants to do that with the waiter inches from you holding the tablet while you're both looking? It lived up to its name. The food was truly marginal. The line was long. the portion was small and the service was truly dreadful. Our waiter appeared to not have bathed in a couple of days. He was sweaty and greasy. I went to lunch with two of my coworkers. Two of us ordered iced tea and one ordered water. Only I got my iced tea despite having reminded him twice. I chose the lunch "buffet" and I stood on line forever to get my meal. Unfortunately for Cindy and Lulu, my lunch buddies, they ordered sandwiches which took 20 minutes longer to get. When we went to pay our bill, Lulu told the cashier that she never got the iced tea that she ordered. The cashier called the waiter over and asked him about it. He told her to just get us out of there. Unfortunately for him he did it in Spanish in which Lulu and Cindy are both fluent. I thought Lulu was going to kick his a$$. In all of my years, I have never left a $00.01 tip. I did on this day. If you want great Puerto Rican food and great service, go to Divine Taste on Evers (between 410 & Wurzbach).
