    El pilot Puerto Rican restaurant

I'm always on the hunt for good Puerto Rican food finally made my way to this place and it did not disappoint. It was really good and the service was phenomenal. Cool ambience nothing fancy. But the food was really delicious. So if you are interested in Puerto Rican food, this is a great spot to visit. I definitely recommend.

    Best damn lunch in town.

Had another wonder Puerto Rican lunch with great quality service, clean environment with very friendly staff always aiming to please. The chicken is very flavorful, the roasted pork is cooked perfectly with seasoning and love. I recommend going for lunch to try several different things at once. The lunch always comes with your choice of rice and beans and a side salad. You get a very nice amount for the bargain price. This is always my goto when I was great cooked food with lots of flavor.

BLUF: This Puerto Rican restaurant serves food as good if not better than some places IN Puerto Rico. I'm a fan of Spanish food, have been for decades. I enjoy cooking it, eating it and traveling to discover new and interesting takes on different Chef's interpretations on traditional Spanish cuisine. So I was pleasantly surprised to taste quality food and home made from scratch dishes during a recent class lunch. I walked in and noticed more of an express type lunch option to the right if you are on the go and a seated are on the right and rear of the inside if you want to take a break from the San Antonio sun and weather. Even as you walk up there are nice tables outside which instantly made me think it would be nice in the winter when the temps are favorable. Our group was greeted (back) warmly and sat promptly. Between the sounds and smells and tunes it genuinely felt like some part of my brain unlocked. I sprung for the steak and asked for double beans and alrhough the rice looked fluffy and flavorful, the beans were clearly made in house and with talent. I was very satisfied with the serving size and the price point. This was a great place to sit and have a meeting without it being overly loud. A lot of folks seem to converge here for lunch based on the quality of care and service and food- so make sure to take a look at the menu online before hand and arrive with an idea of what delicious plates youre about to get into.

El Pilón Sabor Boricua is a Puerto Rica. Restaurant on Harry Wurzbach Road near the Harry Wurzbach gate of Ft. Sam. There plenty of parking surrounding the restaurant so no need to worry about finding a parking spot. There's indoor and outdoor seating and inside is very clean! Upon entrance, the staff was super friendly and helpful in helping me to decide on something that wouldn't take too long to cook. I decided upon the Cuban sandwich with plantains. The waitress was right. My order was ready in less than 8 minutes! The sandwich was deliciously seasoned, moist and tender. And the plantains were the perfect hint of sweetness! I washed it down with a few swigs of Puerto Rican soda, which was also tasty! If you're near the area, treat yourself to some good food, you won't regret! Mil gracias, El Pilon!!!

Stopped by with some co-workers for lunch last week. The place is clean and looks newly remodeled. Staff was friendly and helpful. Not too many vegetarian options available though. I paid more for a side of arroz con gandules and plantains than my co-workers did for the 2 meat lunch special, which included rice, beans, salad, and plantains. The food was ok, but I didn't think it was worth the price I paid.

Stopped by for lunch, they do a combo priced on how many meats you get. Got the chicken and peril, skipped thr carbs and got all salad. Get all the optional condiments, they are delicious. Fast, quick service.

The way you order your food was set up a bit strange. The food was already prepared and set up kinda buffet style behind the glass so it was ready very quickly which worked out well for the amount of time we had for lunch. Lunch special for $8.99, Perfect amount of food, fast, delicious, and a great price! Dark meat chicken 10/10 Skin was seasoned beautifully, chicken was tender and moist. Delicious. Salad 10/10 Just some lettuce and a slice of tomato. Nice little touch of freshness on the plate White rice 10/10 It was seasoned a bit, just the perfect amount of salt I think. Plantains 8/10 Sliced whole. Delicious, soft and sweet, not super crispy or anything (I know some places do them a little crispier on the outside). Opted to not have any beans

We been here a few times now and it's hit every time!!! I get my normal cuban sandwich w/ fried plantain and extraaaa mayoketchup pero my bf got the tripleta sandwhich because he wanted to be different and loved it -- it's steak, pork, and ham... he said it was super flavorful but not salty which was the perfect amount of seasoning accomplished in a sandwhich w/ three meats Lol As always, they don't disappoint and have good service. They always joke with us or laugh surprised that I speak Spanish.. feels very "homey" in here and the food is similar to something ya mother would cook!

This was a new place that was an unexpected foodie experience. The waitress was so helpful in describing the different menu items (loved the authentic accent). The pork carnitas were so flavorful and seasoned so well. The rice, black beans, Yuka, and fried Maduro (plantain) had the most unique flavors. The sauces were something new but enjoyable. Definitely, be back for more!

I will definitely be returning!!!!! This place has some amazing food. The service was pleasant and the ambiance was great. The music was at a great volume. Yes yes and yes. Thank God it didn't take me long to find a good Puerto Rican restaurant!

Really good food. If you're near the post gate at Fort Sam Houston, this restaurant is a wonderful place to fill up for lunch . For $8 you will get a plate loaded with rice (with pigeon peas, Spanish, or white) , your choice of beans (red or black) and your choice of meat(s)... pernil (pork shoulder), roasted chicken, carne picadillos...and a side of platanos maduros. I've tried their tacos, tiras, and mofongo and chicharron plates. It's all delicious. The staff are always friendly. The drinks, if from the fountain, are bottomless. Plenty of parking directly in front and to the side of the restaurant. This place gets pretty busy at lunch, but the tables cycle fast and there's plenty of room

Came for a quick with the wifey. I always see this place and decided to finally give it a shot. I ordered the churassco and my wife got the steak Mofongo. The churassco was spot on. Very soft, juicy and flavorful. Decent size cut of meat too. This plate was 5 stars on its own The steak mofongo was disappointing. Was very dry and bland. The mofongo itself was ok, not bad but not great. Service was a bit lacking as we never got checked on. Still, the lunch special they had looks like the best deal and I will come back to try it out.

Great service, friendly staff, and amazing food. Super casual place for authentic and fresh food. Definitely come check out the mofongo/duofongo here, it is super crispy and garlicy and so delicious! If you never had it think of it as a plantain version of chunky mashed potatoes with meat and lots of flavor. It is so so so good! Overall I had a great experience here, I devoured my whole plate.

It is an exceptional culinary experience, paired with the kind of warm, attentive hospitality that has become exceedingly rare in modern dining. The staff here are genuinely delightful, executing a service model that is both highly efficient and impeccably clean. Operating as a curated, staff-served buffet line, the setup allows for effortless customization while ensuring pristine presentation. The value proposition here is outstanding, offering remarkably generous portions at a very approachable price point. The spread is impressively comprehensive, featuring an expansive salad bar, a dedicated dessert display, and a rotating selection of hot entrées. The technical execution of the food is flawless: * The Sides: The mashed potatoes and corn are a revelation--whipped to a light, cloud-like consistency that delivers a perfect balance of buttery richness. * The Staples: The rice is impeccably seasoned and cooked to an ideal texture, serving as the perfect canvas for the deeply flavorful, expertly prepared beans. * The Plantains: The fried plantains are a masterclass in technique, boasting a beautifully crisp exterior that gives way to a tender, caramelized interior. * The Protein: The roasted chicken is a triumph--so succulent and deeply infused with flavor that it commands the plate entirely on its own merit. With a weekly menu rotation that promises new daily variations, this establishment has deservedly earned a permanent spot in my dining itinerary during my month-long stay in town. I look forward to exploring the rest of their repertoire.

I have tried dozens of places in Austin for tacos and just can't seem to find anything close to the tacos I enjoyed when I lived in San Diego. Living in San Diego, I spent a lot of time in Mexico and I would definitely say they make tacos a particular way. And it was easy to find places in Southern CA that served what I refer to as "authentic" Mexican tacos. When I came to TX, I had heard all about TEX MEX and the "tacos" and was really surprised at the difference between the tacos here and the ones from Mexico/SoCal. But, I'm resilient as a "foodie". I will keep trying until I find that one place and yesterday... I finally found what I would say are the MOST authentic Mexican tacos. I happened to find out about this place on a Facebook post and drove out. It's not a place I would have driven by and even if I did, I might not have stopped. But again, I am determined to find someone who can make tacos like I'm accustomed to eating. It's a little trailer located right on the road and they have a big "TACO" sign on the road so you shouldn't miss it. If not the sign, you will probably see a crowd of people enjoying tacos or waiting for their order. I started off ordering what I would consider the 'basics' - a Carne Asada taco and an al Pastor taco. For me, if these are good, the rest of the food is likely to also be good. For starters, they prepare it when you order it! This is a great sign. So many taco places I have been to, they have the meat all ready and just scoop it into a taco shell. Taco meat should be made to order and not premade so already, you know this is a quality taco shop. You can get corn or flour tortillas but I strongly recommend the corn for a taco. They serve them the traditional way with two tortillas and the tacos come with a generous serving of meat. And talk about hot and fresh! I've also found here in Austin, it's been difficult to find legitimate salsa. I had the green sauce and without question, the BEST salsa I have had since moving to Texas. They really should be selling their salsa! My first round of tacos was so amazing... I ordered more! I ordered more of the carne asada and al pastor to take home to the family and even ordered some bean & cheese burritos. Oddly enough, a bean & cheese burrito is such a staple of just about any Mexican restaurant in SoCal but try and get one here in Texas and it's almost impossible. It was refreshing to find a place that makes a bean & cheese burrito and make them authentically; in a large flour tortilla. If your only experience with Mexican food is "Tex Mex", do yourself a favor and make the trip out and experience some authentic tacos. If you have moved here from SoCal and are missing tacos from home... you'll want to make the drive out here for these tacos! And if you like spicy, you must try the green salsa. By the way, to save time, they do take phone orders so you can always just place your order on your way over and they will have them ready when you arrive. They are very nice people and the food is amazing!
