BLUF: This Puerto Rican restaurant serves food as good if not better than some places IN Puerto Rico. I'm a fan of Spanish food, have been for decades. I enjoy cooking it, eating it and traveling to discover new and interesting takes on different Chef's interpretations on traditional Spanish cuisine. So I was pleasantly surprised to taste quality food and home made from scratch dishes during a recent class lunch. I walked in and noticed more of an express type lunch option to the right if you are on the go and a seated are on the right and rear of the inside if you want to take a break from the San Antonio sun and weather. Even as you walk up there are nice tables outside which instantly made me think it would be nice in the winter when the temps are favorable. Our group was greeted (back) warmly and sat promptly. Between the sounds and smells and tunes it genuinely felt like some part of my brain unlocked. I sprung for the steak and asked for double beans and alrhough the rice looked fluffy and flavorful, the beans were clearly made in house and with talent. I was very satisfied with the serving size and the price point. This was a great place to sit and have a meeting without it being overly loud. Food is good but call on weekends to check on hours. I went this Saturday evening with my brother from out of town, and we were told to either order take out or wait until they start table service. Apparently they serve take out until 5:30 and we got there at 4:45. I really wanted to like El Pilon Sabor. First time I drove here to work I was refused service since I had arrived at a quarter til closing time and wasn't even allowed to order to go since they close their kitchen at 5:30pm despite closing the restaurant at 6pm. For my 2nd attempt, I took PTO on a Friday and drove out here and tried to get here sooner than last time. I was refused service for dining in since their kitchen was going to close soon but the lady at the counter let me order the food to go and said I could dine at the patio outside so my options were take it or leave it. I ordered the rotisserie chicken with beans and fried plantains and arroz con gandules since they were out of tostones. For dessert I got tembleque and a Tropic Kola for a beverage. The chicken was good and so was everything else. The tembleque was heavy with cinnamon. I'd only recommend if you live close by. I'd return if they'd expand their hours past 6pm on weekdays. I understand that their employees want to go home since restaurant work is tough and demanding but they got competition like LA Marginal ,Luna Rosa and a Puerto Rican food truck posted up on Austin Hwy and Eisenhauer minutes away and I'd rather go to any of those places for PR cuisine. read more
